Mayor faces assault charges On the morning of Wednesday 20 June, Jane Gwebu, a municipal official, laid charges against Councillor Thandi Ngxonono, GMM’s executive mayor. In tears, Gwebu retold the story of her assault at the mayor’s hands. “She sent her secretary to call me to her office, where she ordered me to sit down,” Gwebu said. Gwebu continued to say that the mayor was “hotheaded” and swore at her, calling her derogatory names and even slapping Ms Gwebu. “She told me that she is the mayor whether I like it or not and she is tired of me going around and talking about her to our other colleagues,” Gwebu said.
According to Gwebu, the councillor accused her of talking about her to their co-workers, and in this version of events, the nature of the incident appears quite personal. She also reported that Councillor Ngxonono threatened her when she said “I will kill you if I have to.” The councillor distanced herself from the claims, saying she did not lay hands on Gwebu. “It is unfortunate that the said official views reprimanding as assault,” Ngxonono said in a press release regarding the matter. She maintained that she had summoned Gwebu to reprimand her about her “unjust behaviour towards her official duties as an official of the municipality”. In a brief interview, the mayor
explained that she had summoned Gwebu to discuss her neglect of her work duties. Councillor Ngxonono said that this behaviour was affecting the overall functionality of the workplace, and she believed that it needed to be corrected. The councillor also stated that Gwebu’s response to the reprimand was disrespectful and that she was not open to this correction at all. The mayor concluded her press statement by saying that she is eagerly awaiting for the law to take its own course. When the news hit the public, social media was abuzz with comments on Councillor Ngxonono’s character. Continued to page 2

The community of eMbalenhle took a decision last week Thursday at a mass meeting in the Risko Fakude Stadium to close eMbalenhle completely. 9 ANC councillors became disgruntled when they realised that only certain councillors were receiving services from the municipality and their wards were not. The councillors tried to reach an agreement with the current ANC leadership but were not successful. The meeting with both the Speaker and the Mayor did not bring the problem to a conclusion but rather aggravated the issue. eMbalenhle is currently suffering extremely from the lack of service delivery. Sewage is running freely, in certain areas, into the streets and streams. This is causing a lot of pollution. Water supply is inconsistent and would be non-existent for days on end. The big problem is the lack of electricity. During the Bulletin’s reporting on Sunday night, it became clear that the electricity supply is really intermittent at best. The supply would sometimes only be on for 15 minutes, only to be stopped for a long period. The protests started on Sunday night and continued for most of the night. Tyres and anything else that can burn were placed in the road and set alight. The roads were also littered with rocks, rubbish and anything that could be seen as an obstacle. The Bulletin returned on Monday morning to report on the protests with the mercury dipping below 0 degrees, only to find a huge crowd that gathered at the entrance to eMbalenhle from both Secunda and Evander. Police were on the scene in their numbers and stood their ground as the protestors numbers swelled to more than a thousand. The protestors threw rocks and bottles at the police that forced the police to open fire with rubber bullets. This only gave temporary reprieve as the crowd quickly gathered again and inched closer to the police. The protestors were very organised in their confrontation with the police. They used corrugated iron as shields against the rubber bullets. The protestors flanked the police in a movement reminiscent of military style maneuvers. After a few test runs the protestors charged the police forcing them to retreat about 1000m onto the Graceland road. When the Bulletin asked Cllr John Nkosi of the 9 disgruntled ANC councillors if they had any contact with the mayor, he
replied “None”. The Mayor is also under a lot of pressure as the GMM delegation received a roasting at the SCOPA meeting two weeks ago. The police confirmed that arrests have been made for looting and public violence. Some buildings were also set alight during the protests. A lot of sms’s and Whatsapp messages were doing the rounds suggesting
protestors were marching to Secunda to set the municipal buildings on fire. These were all untrue. The Bulletin is doing its best to ensure that the news is original, accurate and first. Like our FB page and follow all the action there.

Mayor faces assault charges
One user said that “she is well known of being a bully”, while others said that she has always had a temper, as far back as her days as a teacher at KI Twala Secondary school, where she allegedly used to hit her students. The general attitude of the public indicated that readers were not at all surprised. The DA released a media statement of its own, condemning the alleged actions of the councillor. “The DA questions the capacity in which the executive mayor was apparently reprimanding the official, as the acting Municipal Manager, Mr Thisha Mhlanga, was appointed by the council to oversee duties that regard
officials and management of the municipality. What is he doing all day, if the executive mayor must carry out his duties?” the statement read. On this basis, the DA argued that the mayor was either acting out of her capacity, or “brought her political squabbles into her office when she should have been focusing on serving the people of Govan Mbeki.” In their media statement, SAPROMO expressed similar sentiments: “It is said that the mayor was involved with employees, which she shouldn’t have done from the first place. She is not an administrator, but a political head. It is not for her to reprimand employees as they are not reporting to her,” the
statement read. The statement further went on to suggest that the mayor be suspended for the time being and that in the meantime, “an acting mayor be appointed to give Ngxonono some time to deal with the court case.” The mayor neither confirmed nor denied the legal charges against her. She simply maintained that the alleged assault did not take place, and that the matter was not as serious as Gwebu had made it out to be. At the time of going to press, a statement from the police had not yet been received.

GMCF leaders charged and released Following labour-related protests at Murray and Roberts, three members of the Govan Mbeki Community Forum (GMCF) were arrested on charges of Public Violence and Malicious Damage To Property. On 13 June, the Forum gathered at Murray and Roberts in their usual fashion, pleading with the company (as it has done with many others) for the hiring of locals. During the protest, members of the Forum torched some of Murray and
Roberts’ office buildings and some vehicles on the premises. Eight security guards and employees were injured and taken to hospital. The trio (Ashley Dubazane, Tshepo Ngcongwane and Sibusiso Magaya) appeared in Secunda Magistrates Court on Tuesday 19 June for bail applications. At that point, they had not participated in an identification parade, and the matter was postponed pending that process. They appeared
again on Wednesday 20 June, where the prosecutor requested that the bail application be postponed again as the ID parade had still not taken place, and that the trio could possibly face additional charges, such as arson. The trio’s attorney, however, argued that the application could still proceed without the ID parade having taken place, and that this was not unheard of. In finality, the judge ruled that because of the seriousness of the case, which
Tshepo Ngcongwane, Ashley Dubazane, and SIbusiso Magaya appeared in Secunda Magistrates Court on Tuesday 19 June.
Crime snippets Armed robbery outside Charlie 3 Police received information about an armed robbery outside Sasol (Charlie 3) early on the morning of 20 June. It is alleged that the driver of a coal truck from Richards Bay parked the truck outside the gate next to Charlie 3. Immediately after parking, four men approached him. One man opened the door and pointed a firearm at him. Another got into the truck and pointed another firearm at him. The others then began to remove the 18 truck tyres. According to the information from the driver, the robbery started at 22:00 the previous night and went on until 03:00 in the morning, and that is when it was reported to the police. When the suspects finished, they drove away but the truck driver did not see their vehicle. No arrests have been made yet.
Body found at Winkelhaak Police received a complaint on the morning of 20 June about a body that was found in an open field at Driefontein/old Winkelhaak Mine area. Upon arrival, police found that the body of the man had five bullet wounds: one in the head, three in the chest and one in the leg. According to police, the body appeared to have been in water for more than 24 hours before it was dumped in the field. The body also showed signs of assault. The deceased is currently unknown and no arrests have been made.
Two foreign nationals arrested in Evander Members of Secunda Flying Squad conducted a routine stop and search on Monday 25 June when an illegal firearm was found in a silver VW Polo. The car was stopped on the road adjacent to Brendan Village. The firearm, along with ammunition, was found in a bag in the vehicle. Two suspects were detained at Evander Police Station in connection with the firearm. At the time of publishing, they were due to appear in court on Tuesday 26 June.
had by that point received extensive media coverage, and the possibility of charges being added, the matter would indeed be postponed to Friday 22 June. Throughout their appearances in court, the three accused were supported by the remaining members of GMCF, who gathered outside the court on each day, chanting and singing for the release of their comrades. Dubazane, Ngcongwane and Magaya were released on bail of R5 000 each on Friday 22 June. GMCF maintains that it is a peaceful organisation that seeks to help the youth of Govan Mbeki Municipality in their struggle against unemployment.

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in”, sing Leonard Cohen.

Abuti Lolo: Your comic of choice Local comedian and spirited personality, Abuti Lolo, has taken the leap and entered the Comics Choice Awards. Having taken the stage for the past two years, Lolo has taken the craft further than he initially imagined. “I started comedy in 2016 December but this year, my comedy journey really took a turn for the best as I got to perform at the Savanna Newcomer Showcase,” he said. This year, Lolo went on to perform as the opening act for Trevor Gumbi as part of the multi-award nominated comedian’s Divorce Tour. Lolo has also shared the stage with other renowned comedians, including David Kau and Jason Goliath. “I love how comedy allows you to tell your story no matter how deep it is; you can still be funny and inspirational,” Lolo said of his newfound passion. As an aspiring international comedian, he aims to inspire those who come from similar backgrounds. “The real reason I’m running for this is to encourage someone who might believe that being from a small town means you’ll never make it,” he explained. “This is us opening up the doors for dreams.” In support of Abuti Lolo, readers can drive his contention for the Audience Choice Award (the only award open to the public) by voting via the competition’s SMS line. To vote, SMS “83990” to 45757. Each SIM card can vote up to 50 times and each sms costs R1.50. Voting closes on 4 July. Lolo will go on to perform alongside Elton Mduduzi, Celeste Ntuli, Tol Ass Mo and Mashebela on the 30th of June at Graceland.

Comeback fight won by TKO
Photo: Encee van Huyssteen
Cedric proved his worth against a much taller opponent on Saturday night by beating Trezegeut Kanyinda by technical knockout (TKO) in the third round. The Big Top Arena at Carnival City was packed with spectators, waiting to see their hero fight in the cage. It was clear that this EFC MMA event would provide good entertainment when the fights started and the air vibrated to the bass emanating from overhead sub speakers. People were discussing their heroes whilst scrambling to get to their seats. Chaos erupted when the first fighters appeared. People shouted at their favourite fighters, wishing them luck while making gestures at the opponents. Mixed Martial Arts covers a variety of fighting disciplines and this is evident when the two fighters square off in the cage. Some fighters prefer a more traditional way of fighting and would like to box it out, avoiding the grappling style of their opponents. Others prefer to fight it out on the ground. The first round started with both fighters testing the other but also with eagerness to engage the fight. Trezegeut Kanyinda had a 24cm advantage over Cedric and he tried to use it by trying to keep Cedric out of reach. A few good punches were thrown by both fighters and a few that
really shook Trezegeut. Trezegeut also landed a few that pushed Cedric back. Cedric had other plans though, as he moved and threw Trezegeut to the ground. In round one and two Trezegeut managed to get his arm around Cedric’s neck, potentially choking Cedric into submission. Cedric managed to get out of the choke holds and turned the tables on Trezegeut, locking him in a choke hold from the rear. Both times only a few seconds more would probably have seen a submission from Trezegeut but the bell intervened and saved Trezegeut, giving new meaning to the term saved by the bell. Tragedy nearly struck in round two when Trezegeut managed an illegal kick to the back of Cedric’s head. It took a while to make sure that Cedric was in good health whilst Trezegeut awaited his fate. Would the fight continue? The judges allowed the fight to continue and both fighters returned to the position they were in when the kick occurred. The final round saw a different approach by Cedric. Once he managed to bring Trezegeut down on the ground he started to pound him with punches. The referee eventually stopped the fight and Cedric was declared winner by TKO. What makes this fight so much more magnificent is the story of Cedric “the
Dominator” Doyle. Cedric sustained a very bad injury in 2016 and had to undergo brain surgery. Doctors examined Cedric immediately after the fight to make sure that he was in good health and gave him a clean bill of health but as a precautionary Photo: Roarke Bouffe
measure, barred him from fighting for the next 40 days. Cedric hopes to be able to have his next fight after the shutdowns (at Sasol) in August. Three of his fighters will be in action on Saturday in Germiston.

Sasol Digi Mag Rugby wins again
Middelburg players trying to stem the charge by Jannie
Sasol Digi Mag (Sasol) rugby club showed their muscle on Saturday when they beat Middelburg 41-7 at the Sasol Club grounds. The game started at a blistering pace with Middelburg putting the first points on the board. It was a good break from a loose ball that Middelburg picked up very nicely. Sasol retaliated with their own try shortly afterwards. Middelburg ran a number of good attacking lines and Sasol had to make sure that their defences were in place. Fortunately for Sasol, they were in place and the defences held. Only on a few occasions was it necessary to commit more defenders to stop the attacking runs from Middelburg. The Sasol backline put themselves under pressure with loose and inaccurate passes. It was only excellent
ball skills that made it possible to turn loose passes into attacking runs. The Sasol fly half played a general’s game and dictated the game with well-placed kicks and quick passes. Both Sasol centres played a fast attacking game and proved to be a huge thorn for the boys from Middelburg. Once the pacers on the wings had the ball, it spelled trouble for the visitors. Sasol’s backline played an excellent attacking game despite the loose passes. It would seem that the players were over eager. The scrums seemed equal but Sasol proved to be a little stronger and better organised. There were a few instances where the scrum collapsed but both front rows scrummed a little higher and that stopped the collapsing. Sasol managed to hook a tight head or two, putting more pressure on the
visitors. The area around the scrum was a pleasure to watch when Sasol’s scrum-half started running. It took several players to stop him from gaining too much ground. The service to the backline was fast, adding to the pressure on Middelburg. In the lineouts, Sasol dominated the boys from Middelburg. Sasol managed to win some of the visitors’ throw-ins but their own lineouts were not always taken cleanly. The throw-ins from the hooker missed its mark a few times. The visitors’ game was marked with one or two players always tackling just a little too late or continuing to wrestle after the whistle was blown. Sasol’s “HEART” way of playing paid off as they played with determination to play the ball and not the man. The malls and breakpoints were a good place for Sasol as they managed to steal a few balls from tackles. A little concerning was that Middelburg also managed to win some turnover balls. The game started loose but became more and more structured as the game progressed. It was a good win for Sasol against a team that played well but succumbed to the pressure from Sasol.
