Bleshoender dam revamp project The Bleshoender dam also known as the dam at Lake Umuzi had to bear the brunt of criticism over the past few years regarding the plant growth in the dam. The influx of sewerage into the dam did not help to stem the growth of algae and other invasive plant life. Several attempts have been made to address the problem only to see the problems return. These efforts were very expensive but not effective. The Hartebeespoortdam fisheries supplied fingerlings that were released into the dam but that proved to be the incorrect measures. A new effort to clean the dam is now underway and a public meeting
was held at Boesies, Lake Umuzi, on Tuesday, 23 July. This was in line with the Public Participation Processes that needed to be taken. Lake Umuzi requires authorisation from DAEA for the aquatic rehabilitation and desiltation of the Bleshoender Dam (REF 1/3/1/16/1 G-124). Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) regulations as per Government Notice R.543 to Notice R.546 of 2010 must also be complied with. The activities that authorisation is required for are listed as: “The dredging, excavation, removal or moving of soil, sand, shells, shell grit, pebbles or rock of more than 5 cubic meters from a watercourse.” This is per
Listing Notice 1, GN.544 item activity 19. In more practical terms it means that the following will happen: the dam will be drained and the fish will be relocated. Reeds will be harvested and removed together with other aquatic vegetation. The sediment that is removed will be used for a new bird island (subject to approval) and the desilting activities will be performed by mechanical equipment. It will be a total rehabilitation of the dam. A basic assessment process has thus started with specialists input such as: Water quality results and reports, Fisheries Specialist report and
recommendations, Fishery permits and Ecological reports. Overgrown recreational water bodies have, in general, safety implications. There are drowning hazards, water and water table contamination by decomposing vegetation, the system supports bacteria and viruses, the sewerage run off into water bodies multiplies health hazards and feeds alien vegetation. The environment is a low sensitive riparian area and it is therefore recommended that mechanical equipment be used for the clean-up. We hope that the dam will be clean for the next few years after this massive clean-up and rehabilitation project.

A 36-year-old man appeared at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on 24 July on charges of possession of explosives. The man was arrested after the police stopped a grey Toyota Avanza that travelled towards Kaapmuiden during an operation conducted on the R38 road. They proceeded to search the vehicle, which had six passengers and amongst them, one was carryied a bag that contained 15 m blue and 6 m green explosives. He was arrested on the spot. Meanwhile, three men aged between 28 and 34 were arrested on 22 July at Delmas for an alleged business robbery and also appeared at the Delmas Magistrate’s Court. Information at police disposal revealed that the men stormed into a shop and ambushed the employees, when one of the employees recognised one of the men as having been involved in a robbery that also took place at the same store in May this year. As she was about to press the alarm/panic button, another suspect armed with a firearm was already behind her at the counter. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and a bag of cell phones before fleeing the scene in a silver Toyota Etios with Gauteng registration numbers. Members of Delmas police were notified and they quickly responded to the information received and spotted the vehicle at a T-junction along the R555 road, headed to Sundra. A chase ensued between the suspects and the police until the Etios was stopped by Sundra police who was alerted of the incident and conducted an operation. The four suspects tried to escape, but three were arrested with one managing to escape. A 9mm firearm with the serial number filed off was recovered under the passenger’s seat together with the cell phones and cash. A probe revealed that the firearm was stolen at a security company in Johannesburg. The fourth suspect is still at large, anyone with information is urged to contact Warrant Officer Jacque Snook at 072 479 1408 or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. R38 Road multi vehicle collisions kill three Three people were killed during a multi vehicle collision that happened on the R38 Road between Carolina and Hendrina at 07h40 on 25 July. Three articulated trucks and a Light Delivery Vehicle were involved in the head on and rear collision. The three died at the scene. Three other people received treatment at Carolina Hospital for serious injuries that they sustained during the crash. Although the crash is still being investigated, it is suspected that the misty conditions that prevailed on the road earlier may have exacerbated the situation. Police constable arrested with 6 accomplices for planning a CIT heist A multi-disciplinary task team set up to combat cash-in-transit robberies continues to yield positive results as a police constable together with six other men were arrested. On 25 July police received information about a group of suspects planning to commit a cash-in-transit robbery in central Johannesburg. The operational team comprising of the Limpopo and Gauteng Tracking Teams followed up on the description of the vehicles and flagged down a
white Toyota Hilux and a Ford Ranger next to a petrol station in Smit Street. The suspects fired at the police, but the police overpowered and arrested them. It was discovered that the Ford Ranger used by the suspects was an official police vehicle attached to Silverton SAPS detectives and was driven by a constable attached to the Silverton Detective Service. Three other men were in the Ford Ranger with the constable while the others were found in another bakkie which was reported hijacked in Garsfontein. The police team recovered two firearms, two explosives and other implements possibly intended to be used to commit a robbery. The suspects are likely to face charges of conspiracy to commit crime, possession of prohibited firearms and ammunitions, possession of explosives and possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles. The National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla John Sitole, has commended the team for the swift proactive response which resulted in the arrest of the suspects. “We will continue to work tirelessly and intercept these robbers as we take back our streets and create a safe and secure environment for South Africans,” said the General. “While I applaud our communities for their growing support for our efforts in combatting serious and violent crimes, I am filled with disgust at the alleged involvement of one of our own in these types of crime,” added General Sitole. Former councillor to appear for defeating the ends of justice A 41-year-old former Councillor of the Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality appeared before the court after he was arrested on 25 July on charges of defeating the ends of justice. Thulani Obed Shabangu, who is currently waiting for his trial to commence on 24 October, on charges of corruption and fraud which include selling of houses, was arrested on 18 December 2018 and released on a R50 000 bail two days later, with conditions, amongst others, that he may not contact witnesses. It is reported that the suspect violated one of the conditions of his bail and was arrested by the police in Amersfoort, as a result, he appeared on 26 July at the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, 12 men aged between 18 and 35, appeared at the Evander Magistrate’s Court on 26 July in connection with illegal mining activities. Their arrest came after the Secunda Cluster Crime Intelligence, K9 Unit and Vispol members were doing a joint operation to address the scourge of illegal mining in the area. During the arrest, it was discovered that most of the suspects are undocumented foreigners. They appeared at the abovementioned court and faced charges of illegal mining, trespassing and contravention of the Immigration Act (Act no 13 of 2002) charges. Early morning crash kills three on N4 toll road near Emalahleni Early on the morning of 26 July, before 01h00, three people died on the N4 toll road between Middelburg and Emalahleni. This happened when three vehicles collided. One of the vehicles, an SUV, apparently veered off the road after the driver lost control. It collided head on with a bakkie. The SUV
2 August 2019 sideswiped with an articulated truck. The deceased included a passenger and driver in the SUV. The passenger in the bakkie was also killed. There were seven people in the bakkie including the driver. Five people including the driver sustained seriously injuries and one passenger was not injured. The articulated truck driver was not injured. The injured people were all admitted at Witbank Hospital for treatment. The investigation into the crash is underway. Meanwhile Provincial Traffic law enforcement officers have arrested a truck driver for overloading. The truck, which was at one of the weighbridges in Middelburg, was carrying a crane and it was grossly overloaded. The driver could not provide an abnormal permit at the time when the truck was weighed. The driver was arrested and is out on a R2500 bail. He is expected to appear in court soon. Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Ms. Gabisile Shabalala, has warned motorists to use the road cautiously to avoid road crashes especially on weekends. She bemoaned that most deadly crashes were seemingly on the rise especially on weekends. She has therefore encouraged law enforcement officers not to show leniency towards reckless and negligent driver behaviour. She said adequate punishing of those who break the law will serve as a deterrent and subsequently more lives will be saved on the road. Shabalala wished those who were injured a speedy recovery. She has welcomed the arrest of the truck driver who was overloaded saying that disobeying the road rules contributes to most crashes. She has also appealed to truck owners to ensure that their drivers comply with the law and not overload among others. “Overloaded trucks and vehicles do not only pose danger to road safety, but it also affects road infrastructure badly,” she said. She said while profitability was crucial for sustainability of trucking business, owners and drivers must also prioritize road safety at all times. Man appears for daughter’s murder A 30-year-old man appeared before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on 26 July on a charge of murder. His appearance came after he handed himself over to the police on Wednesday, 24 July. It is alleged that on Tuesday, 22 July, the suspect brutally assaulted his 12-year-old daughter after she had apparently slept out for a period of three days. The following day her parents noticed that she was unresponsive as they were trying to wake her up to get ready for school. She was rushed to hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival. It was there that the suspect allegedly admitted to having brutally assaulted her and handed himself over to the police. The suspect was remanded in custody and will appear at the same court on Tuesday, 30 July, for a formal bail application. The management of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, condemn in the strongest possible terms acts of abuse by parents, guardians, care-takers or anybody else for that matter, as this has far reaching implications.

Lapa destroyed in fire A fire broke out in a lapa in Joe Slovo Street (Ext 22 Secunda) on Saturday night, where family and friends were together to enjoy a braai. According to the owner of the house they were inside the house when the electrical supply suddenly tripped. As they came out, they heard neighbours calling. They realised that the lapa
was on fire. They immediately called for help and the relevant emergency services were alerted. The fire brigade was quick on the scene to start extinguishing the fire. Unfortunately, the fire engine was in Evander and had to rush to Secunda. The firefighters contained the fire until the large truck arrived. The grass roof took some
time to extinguish, but the firefighters managed the task well. The GMM Fire Department averted an even larger tragedy when they stopped the fire from spreading to the adjacent house. Thank you to the fire team from Govan Mbeki Municipality. They play a vital role in keeping the community safe.

No charges against the Mayor! Thursday 25 July, a day that will forever haunt Ms Jane Gwebu. She has been attending the court diligently while waiting for justice to be served. This was not to be. Thandiwe Ngxonono, Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, was acquitted on two charges when she appeared before the magistrate at the Secunda Magistrates court. The court case attracted a lot of attention and was well attended by supporters of both Thandi and Jane. Jane laid two charges against the Mayor in June last year. The incident also happened in June according to Jane. The first charge alleges that the mayor threatened Jane (victim) with violence and death while the second charge alleges that the mayor has physically assaulted the victim. The mayor used all the tricks in the book to delay the court proceedings. The foundation for the acquittal was that although there were claims of
physical assault on Jane by Thandi there were no witnesses to corroborate these claims. A jubilant Mayor left the court through the back entrance that she had been using during her appearances.

“In ‘n ander lewe.” So hardloop my gedagtes vanaand as ek sit en kyk na die dokumentasie van my lewe. ‘n Lewe.

Robokids to participate in World Robotics Olympiad STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education has been the basis of most children’s school curriculum in the past few years. With technology constantly and continuously expanding and science that is all around us, STEM education helps to bridge the gap between mathematics and science. Mathematics and science produce technology, thus the importance of this type of education. The extracurricular activities available today for children who are interested in these subjects are inimitable. One
of those activities is Robotics and in Secunda there is Robokids. Robotics, according to the Oxford dictionary, is: “the branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation and application of robots.” Robokids is a learning centre to assist children in improving language and mathematics skills. As previously mentioned, the fact that technology is fast-paced and continuously growing makes this platform perfect for children from the age of six years old. The most exciting part of Robokids is that 9 teams of 2 learners per team will

be competing in the World Robotics Olympiad this coming weekend at the Tshwane University of Technology. This year’s theme is Smart Cities. Each category has its difficulty level. The younger groups use joysticks to control their robots whereas the older groups had to write their code to ensure their robot’s safe passage and that it does what it has to do according to the task that was given. The Bulletin has seen the code and it is not child’s play. Each team has to write the code for their robot and should something go wrong, recheck and sometimes
rewrite some of the code. Most of the time if something goes wrong, the students like to blame it on one of their teacher’s phone, which ensures a good laugh and happy mood all around! Robokids will be the only robotics educational centre from Mpumalanga and is also the only one in Mpumalanga, who will be competing. The Bulletin cannot wait to hear and report back that these brainiacs have brought home the gold medals and have advanced to the next level. Good luck to all the learners! – Ané Prinsloo

Gisele is looking forward to new beginnings
PROPERTIES EIENDOMME
Gisele Bosman has been with CANSA for four years and is now, to everyone’s dismay, leaving the organisation to pursue another career. Before joining CANSA in 2015, Gisele worked at a mall seven days a week. An opportunity arose and Gisele grabbed it with both hands and excelled as she does with everything she attempts. After joining CANSA she asked for a transfer to Standerton, as at the time it was where her boyfriend stayed who later became her husband. This was a big leap of faith for Gisele, but she asked the Lord and was given the correct signs to make her move. Standerton does not have a CANSA office and the closest one was in Secunda. Gisele served 8 towns as far as Amsterdam and Volksrust. When The Bulletin asked Gisele if the travelling became arduous after a while, her eyes lit up and she smiled from ear to ear and said: “At least I have a good
sound system and great music in my car, so it did not bother me at all! I was privileged to have met all the people I did during my time with CANSA even though I travelled a lot.” When she spoke about leaving CANSA a slight sadness slipped into her eyes. Gisele could not choose any highlights or lowlights as she said that her time at CANSA was only a highlight. The stress, the organising, working on weekends and missing family were worth every minute because she was able to assist and support so many people in her career. For the next few months Gisele is looking forward to relaxing and recuperating at home with her husband and young son. She said that one has to take time off after the job she did to ensure personal and emotional wellbeing. All the best for the future and may your cup be filled with luck! – Ané Prinsloo
Eendedam winter market parking chaos The market at the Eendjiedam on Saturday, 27 July, was once more a success, with quite a few participants, i.e. the SANBS, Little Paws Big Hearts and a variety of other exhibitors selling their merchandise. Congratulations to the organisers of this event for the excellent manner this market was staged. Although the market management did everything correctly, they were left in the lurch by person/s that assumed responsibly for some pertinent issues related to the market being held at the Eendjiedam. One of those was the nonexistent parking facilities. Whereas in the past the visiting public could park
inside the grounds at the market, this ground is the property of the Municipality, was now confronted by a locked gate. These closed gates now resulted in the parking of vehicles on the pavements and private property all along Oliver Tambo drive, Drakensberg Street, Wagner Street and on the corner of Bankspruit and Drakensberg Streets. This caused visitors to cross one of the most traffic active streets in Secunda to reach the market. With the result of possibly being hit by a vehicle where the driver decides that a red traffic light means not to stop, as some close calls were witnessed by The Bulletin.
The Bulletin was told by a reliable source that the GMM was contacted to provide a traffic officer for Saturday to assist with the traffic and pedestrians. This was evident in the traffic officer sitting in his vehicle and never once, in the period The Bulletin observed him, ever left his car to assist the pedestrians to safely cross the street and or apprehending those motorists that transgressed the traffic laws. The entrance to cars which displayed the green wheelchair identification sticker was also a thorn in the flesh for those that are required to stop near the market and not outside on some far away pavement.
This could, however, be the non-training of the security personnel on-site. The Bulletin was told by the Ukasa guards when questioned with regards to the closed gates to the parking area, that they were told through their supervisor that Sasol gave the instructions not to open the gates. This fact calls for some speculation, do Sasol and their appointed security contractor have the authority to not allow the Secunda tax-paying citizens access to the municipal ground? (The Bulletin did not receive an answer from Sasol regarding the guards’ alleged instructions.) – Aart Reedijk

Roos & Rosslee's 30th birthday bash In the middle of the cold Secunda winter, a warm sun shone down this past weekend for the Roos & Rosslee 30th birthday bash. Friday, 26 July, the Boere Mall opened the birthday celebrations for the weekend. There were more stalls than usual, and all had amazing products. The evening at eish!! was packed with people coming to see The Dullybuggers, Ras and the main event everyone was waiting for: Sunset Sweatshop. As soon as Sunset Sweatshop climbed onto the stage to do their soundcheck, the crowd was pulled in by their electric vibe. Once soundcheck was done and they started their set, the whole crowd gathered in front of the stage. Everyone was singing along and dancing to the beat. Ras ended the evening and before he knew it some of the Sunset Sweatshop band members joined him on stage accompanying
him with guitar and drums. The Boere Mall opened again early on the morning of Saturday, 27 July. At eish!! the big screen was set up and ready for the South Africa vs New Zealand rugby match. The crowd was buzzing. The game looked promising, but as they say: “You cannot play against a referee…” In the last minute when the Boks converted a try, the whole crowd jumped up and yelled, the deck was vibrating because of all the jumping up and down and once again our rugby boys did not disappoint. The rest of the day was a bit calmer but as the evening approached more and more people started to arrive. Once again eish!! was packed with a crowd that could not wait to see Spoegwolf. Spoegwolf kicked off their set and there was no space for a mouse to move. The crowd formed a mosh pit and surrounded the stage, stood

on tables and both decks at eish!!, young and old were transfixed by their performance. Sunday, 28 July, saw the people arriving in droves again, this time for the young and handsome Afrikaans singer: Elandré. As soon as he walked on stage and started singing in his baritone voice, he transported the crowd into another world. The biggest surprise of his performance was when he sang Happy Birthday to Roos & Rosslee! The cake was immaculate! Chocolate icing topped with macaroons and Aero chocolate and it tasted even better! The cake was the creation of Elmari Greyling from Something Decadent. All of the organising and energy that went into planning this whole weekend proved to be a gigantic success. Thank you Roos & Rosslee for sharing your birthday with the community. It truly was unsurpassed! – Ané Prinsloo

SPCA Bethal held AGM The Bethal SPCA held its annual general meeting on Tuesday, 23 July. The meeting was held at the “Gereformeerde Kerk” in Vermooten Street, Bethal. The SPCAs are generally suffering from funding and other support from the public as well as a huge influx of animals. Bethal SPCA is no exception. The lack of funding from larger organisations such as Govan Mbeki Municipality as well as Lotto funding hampers the day to day operations. The largest expenses are salaries and veterinary fees. Without these two expenses, the SPCA would not be able to exist. The SPCA needs inspectors and staff to care for the animals and animals need to be treated and spayed. “We would like to encourage younger people to get involved with the SPCA,” said Barbara Mitton, Vice-Chairperson
of the Bethal SPCA. “We would also like to welcome several new members to the board.” The new management committee members are: Chairperson – Marie van der Merwe, Vice-Chairperson – Barbara Mitton, Treasurer – Andre du Plessis, Secretary – Rika Hills, Vice Secretary – Rinaldi Herbst. Bethal SPCA is looking for volunteers to help with the adoptions and all the paperwork that it entails. It would also involve the taking of photographs and managing the Facebook placements etc. If anyone is interested in helping, they can contact Bethal SPCA to find out more. With a lot of animals to care for, it is a daunting task to keep the proverbial ship afloat. Marie van der Merwe delivered a detailed Chairpersons report
highlighting several highs and lows. The period directly preceding her election as Chairperson saw the resignation of two Chairpersons. Marie described this period, together with the lack of funding and high veterinary costs, as the most difficult times for the Bethal SPCA. She also explained the difficulties in maintaining their vehicles. Marie thanked several people that regularly support the SPCA: “They play an essential role in running the SPCA.” The Bethal SPCA cares about the animals. They would like to invite members of the public to become involved with the SPCA. They have an Adopt a Kennel program where members of the public can adopt a kennel for the year. This will help a lot towards their running costs. Please support the Bethal SPCA, they need your help.
East Side 5-star SuperSpar wins award Secunda East Side 5-star SuperSpar recently won the prestigious “Store of the Year Southrand” award. More than 200 stores competed for this illustrious award. It is the second time that this store has been awarded this prestigious award This inhouse accolade is awarded by Spar Southrand Regional Operational Managers. By winning this award again, Secunda SuperSpar is now in the run for the top honours of Store of the year South Africa. Only six stores across South Africa compete in this competition. Winning this competition
will ensure that Secunda can boast at having the best Spar store in SA. In 2017 East Side Spar came second overall in the country. It is a wonderful achievement and a credit to the Spar brand in Secunda. Factors such as customer service, store hygiene, efficiency, the variety of products and freshness of products are considered when adjudicating the award. Chris Chistodoulou and Tharno Manitsas had humble beginnings with a small store across the road from 5 Star SuperSpar more than a decade
ago. They grew the small store into the first SuperSpar in Secunda namely 5 Star SuperSpar. 5 Star won Store of the Year SA in 2014. Secunda East Side 5-star SuperSpar was launched in May 2016 and have managed to win the Store of the Year South Rand within a year. The Management and staff of Secunda Superspar thank all their customers for their continual support. “Without them, this could not have been possible,” says Gerhard Vermaak, assistant store manager Secunda SuperSpar.

Oosterland Eerste Seuns hokkiespan werk hard by Noord Vaal A uitspele Die naweek was daar naels kou by die Noord Vaal A uitspeel in Krugersdorp.

ingesluit – selfs ‘n rap nommer of twee is ingesluit!

Sasol DigiMag Rugby off to finals Sasol DigiMag Rugby will have to face White River this Saturday at Mbombela Stadium to determine the Mpumalanga winners for 2019. Sasol beat Witbank 69 - 15 on Saturday at the Sasol recreation club’s rugby field. The game was played on a dry dusty field so typical of highveld fields that see little water during the winter months. Witbank arrived without three of their star players, but still played a competitive game. It was clear from the start, however, that Secunda would dominate the game. The Secunda men played their usual organised and well-prepared game plan. The front 8 dominated their opponents in all aspects of the game. The men from Witbank had their hands full to stem the frontal assault of the Secunda forwards. The Bulletin does not normally single out individuals in our match reports. It would, however, be appropriate to single out the Hooker (no 2), Lenro Vergotini (AKA Italian stallion) from Secunda. Sasol normally has several players that need mentioning and therefore the reluctance to mention one individual. Lenro has displayed a heart during the matches that we have witnessed. Lenro is the spark that sets the forwards alight. With good ball skills and hard running, he is truly a pleasure to watch. The backline attack broke the proverbial “Camels back”. They outran
their opponents on every occasion and Witbank had to pull out all the stops to keep Sasol from scoring more points. It was not all plain sailing
though, Witbank counter-attacked with vigour and the defences of Sasol were surely tested. So many teams have tried to penetrate
Sasol’s defences, but it is seldom that they would be broken through. Congratulations on a well-deserved win!
