Sasol’s power trip See page 6 for story
After an eventful morning the day ended with a beautiful sunset.
Evander CBD is full of.... Walking through Evander CBD can make you sick, literally. In order to get to your destination, you have to overcome the sight and smell of human feces, used condoms, used toilet paper and broken alcohol bottles, amongst other things. It is evident that party animals at the Nesto Lounge, goes all out on the nights that this overcrowded lounge is open during the week. Hundreds of socialites gather at this Lounge to let of steam. A very unhelpful manager confirmed that the number of guests can rise up to 400 during special events. Hundreds of broken alcohol bottles lie scattered in close proximity of the lounge, some in the parking area. Estelle Mescht, owner of a hair salon three doors down, believes that one of the main problems is that the lounge has a liquor license that states that they may sell liquor until 04:00 in the morning. “They bring their cooler boxes and party outside the lounge in the parking area,” she said. This is not the only headache she gets from the party-goers. The windows to her shop are cracked and although she does have insurance, she doesn’t want to claim as she is uncertain if it will remain whole for long. The biggest problem however is the fact that someone finds it necessary to defecate right in front of her shop. All evidence of this claim, that could be seen on Saturday morning, was a very visible and smelly brown spot, next to a used condom, covered in flies. But the previous evening’s rain didn’t
wash all excrement in CBD and just around the corner, heaps of it could be found on a stoep of Evander Post office. The smell is unbearable and the sight and idea of it is unbelievable. According to Estelle, the municipality just sweeps everything on a heap and leaves it there on the walkway. Estelle said she complained to Evander SAPS numerous times, but nothing is being done. According to her, this was never a problem before the lounge opened almost two years ago. According to the lounge manager, who didn’t want to say what his name was, the lounge has 4 toilets to accommodate their guests. This is far less than what is prescribed by law, but the manager says that everyone that is in the parking area, is not his clients. “They buy booze at other places, and because they are not allowed to enter with alcohol, they sit outside and drink.” “It is absolutely pathetic that he (the lounge owner) is allowed to have a liquor license until 04:00 in the morning. No alcohol is allowed outside of his lounge and the owner is disobeying the law. He will either have to get another venue or close down. He as owner is supposed to make provision for extra toilets for his guests. It is disgusting and barbaric that people are excreting wherever they want,” Aranda Nel Buitendag, VF+ councilor of Govan Mbeki Municipality said. Comments from Evander SAPS and the owner of the lounge building were not

Robbers still on the loose A house robbery took place in the very early hours of January 25. Situated at the corner of Cambridge and Edinburgh Street, two robbers took the house for an easy rob and jumped over a low fence. Rose (not her real name) was sleeping in the garden flat with her 6 year old child. She woke up with the robbers shining their cellphone lights at her. “If you shout, we will kill you” is all they said to her. They initially gained access by opening a small top window. The washing line cord was cut to make a hook that was
used to open a larger window. Once this was open the robbers proceeded to break out the burglar bars and entered the garden flat. A cellphone (Samsung J5), cash, a Samsung TV, Laptop and children’s laptop was taken. The robbers told Rose to stay in the room and to close the door. She later phoned her husband who rushed to the flat. The Police responded very quickly to their call for help but by then the robbers were nowhere to be seen. The police is still investigating the robbery.

Wi-Fi of data).

ATM alarm tripped Stratconrisk responded to a call early on Saturday morning at the N17 Sasol garage. The alarm of the Standard Bank ATM had been tripped. It is still unclear exactly what happened. The Bulletin will post an updated story on their Facebook page as soon as it is
available. Unconfirmed reports indicate that all the doors were open but there is no confirmation if anything had been stolen. Guards were still very visible at the ATM when The Bulletin visited the scene later that day.

Local projects assist with Cape drought Local businesses and NGO’s are requesting community members to contribute water towards various projects to bring relieve to Cape Town, who is currently facing a major water crisis and will possibly have to deal with the consequences of “day zero” come 21 April. On this day, Cape Town will move into a full-scale stage 3 Emergency, which means that water to households and businesses will be cut off and only vital services like hospitals, clinics and distribution points will have water. Only 25L per person per day would be collectable at distribution points, but toilets will no longer flush and it is a big possibility that schools and businesses that is dependant on water, will close. It is unclear for how long “day zero” can last as new sources like wastewater treatment plants are about 50% behind schedule, according to the City’s dashboard. The Cape Town Water Crisis Coalition asked residents to join a protest at the Civic Centre or to join a human chain on community Main Roads for their human rights on Sunday because they feel the City is punishing them with draconian
bylaws and water management devices whilst they are at fault for not managing the water resources and not repairing leaks. Some Cape Town residents are already queuing for hours on a daily basis just to collect their quota water from the natural springs and while some is going so far to gather water from their airconditioning system, others are putting kids swimming pools in their showers to save every drop they can. Some non-permanent swimming pools are no longer sold in the Cape, according to a national retailer’s flyer, which clearly stated that portable swimming pools are not up for sale in the drought stricken province. Capetonians blame the current crisis on drought, bad planning and high water usage levels. While some residents try to save water, others thinks that “day zero” is just a myth and a scare tactic. “It is a very serious crisis and a very big problem and communication with residents are not effective,” Erika Botha Rossouw, VF plus councillor for the City of Cape Town, said on Fokus on Sunday evening. A Brackenfell resident, Marius
Opperman, lost 30 of his Khoi fish that died because he couldn’t put medicine in the water, that needs to be back washed and can’t be done because his daily quota won’t allow it, but expensive (and dead) pet fish will soon be the least of residents problems as they might have to fight for their own survival. The projects Little Paws Big Hearts’s water collection will be distributed to Farm Sanctuary SA and Oscar’s Arc, both NPO animal organizations. “It really is going to come down to the wire and you can be assured that every drop will be directed towards the dogs that need it most. Oscars Arc expresses sincere gratitude for the water donation, given to aid the shelter dogs in our organization. Its hard to imagine that water would become more vital that finding homes for our dogs, but by sharing the love with the gift of water, we can ensure that these dogs continue to survive and thrive so that they are eventually able to find their forever home and family, “ Joanne Lefson, director and founder of both of Oscars Arc and Farm Sanctuary SA, said. Their drop-off points are
Juanita Vermeulen from Our Place, Yvette van Aardt from Sasol Secunda Shared Services Centre and Sera Turpin (Our Place Manager) with water they already collected.
Accident claims life of man Monday started of on a very bad note with three vehicles colliding on the Graceland/ Emba road. It is alleged that the taxi came across the middle of the road and collided with A quantum bus from Lynco as well as a VW Polo. The exact cause of the accidents is still unclear at the time of going to press and are still under investigation. Langamed Services South transported 12 injured and ER24 transported 4 injured. One passenger in the Taxi was declared dead on the scene. Unconfirmed reports indicate that he sustained head injuries when the taxi overturned. Traffic was disrupted for a very long time. “There is a number of problems with the Graceland/Emba road. The road is very narrow and currently has no visible markings. The traffic load is also very high with no visible law enforcement” says Mariaan Chamberlain ward 5 councillor, “we have been trying to get GMM to prioritise this road on our IDP but have not been successful.” Friday also saw a number of accidents occur that kept emergency services
Probable cause of the accident
busy. The driver of a Mercedes minibus lost control of his vehicle at approximately 17H00 Friday afternoon and rolled down an embankment near the Leandra toll gate. Reports indicate that 15 people were injured and were transported to various hospitals by all emergency services. Some of the injuries are quite severe according to EMS personnel on the scene. The cause of the accident seems to be a burst tyre that wrapped itself around the rear axle.
Tinkie Tonkie Nursery School in Evander and Boxes to Go at Lake Umuzi in Secunda. They are in need of a sponsor who is willing to transport the water. Their project is running for about two weeks. If you can assist, please contact the Bulletin. A message from the Cape brought on the initiative of Secunda Bikers Church, Secunda Bikers and Secunda community to collect water. An anonymous source sponsored two trucks to transport the water to this drought-stricken province. Drop off points are at Our Place Sports Bar in Trichardt and Secunda Bikers Church. You can collect empty water bottles from Our Place in Trichardt, fill them up and return them to this ever growing stack. Well doers from as far as Standerton and the East Rand already said they want to contribute. Sasol Secunda Shared Services Centre contributed around 350L in three days. You have until 7 Feb to deliver your water. The water goes to Bikers Church Cape Town, who will divide it amongst those in need.

of skryf nie, was sy antwoord. Want sy was desondanks ‘n uitmuntende sakevrou.
Die dokter sê my wit bloed vreet my rooi bloed op. In haar pyn.

Oosterland turns 30
2018 will be a big year for Hoërskool Oosterland. They will be celebrating their 30 year anniversary this year. In January 1988 a new school in Secunda opened its doors. There was no name yet and was called “Die tweede Afrikaanse hoërskool in Secunda” (the Second Afrikaans highschool in Secunda). The Name Oosterland was adopted later the same year after a ship of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) or Dutch East India Company called Oosterland. The idea was that the precious cargo of porcelain and spices would be represented in the children of the school. The ship first arrived at the Cape of Good Hope on January 29, 1688 Captained by Karel de Marville. The
Oosterland was lost at sea on 24 May 1697 near Salt River Mouth. Only two people survived out of more than 300 aboard. The wreckage was discovered by divers in 1988, 300 years after first arriving in the Cape of Good hope. The schools mottos is “Bewerk en Bewaar” (work it and keep it) from the Bible verse Genesis 2:15. Only 4 of the original personnel that started in 1988 is still with the school. Elzette Botes, she is now also Headmaster, Piet Mnqusho, Josiah Mtshweni and Martha Sikhosana. “We started with 167 children” Says Elzette “and the teachers were so few they sat in the corner at tea time” Keep reading the Bulletin as we will be bringing you more of Hoërskool Oosterland’s celebrations throughout this year.

Sasol Power Trip Secunda residents were worried on Wednesday Jan 24, when the usual Sasol skyline started to resemble a war zone. There was dark smoke billowing from some of the flames. Sirens could also be heard in certain areas of Secunda. The Bulletin contacted Sasol and received a response from them with a good explanation. They explained that they experienced an electrical power failure at the Sasol East Plant and that the engineers were working to restore power. Sasol have launched an investigation into the cause of the power failure. Their main
focus at that stage was to ensure that all plants decommissioned safely, where after the normal restart sequence will follow. No emergency related injuries have been reported at this stage. “Sasol remains committed to the safety of its employees, contractors and the community”, said Alex Anderson Head of Group Media Relations Sasol Limited. There were a lot of comments on Facebook when the story was first posted, some FB users alleged that Eskom deliberately disconnected the power. The Bulletin contacted Eskom and they responded as quoted
hereafter. “There was an interruption of power supply on Jan 24, 2018 at 08:23, at the Eastern side of Sasol Operations in Secunda. The supply was restored to Sasol at 09:00. The interruption was due to a line trap coupling capacitor failure. Eskom is committed to making sure that the supply to Sasol’s Secunda Synfuels Operations is normalized by 27 January 2018. The incident is being investigated and preventative measures and risk mitigation is in place.”

Joshua walks comedy’s narrow path An intimate crowd gathered to witness a unique fusion of the Gospel and comedic art on 27 January at Maleleza Complex in eMbalenhle. Promotional posters leading up to the event ruffled a few feathers, as they curtly bore the words, “Christians only”. Aquilar Dhlamini, however, employed this restriction as part of a larger objective. “My strategy, which I believe is divine, is that if you please Christians, sinners will envy [them] because everybody wants to be pleased, therefore the mission of soul-winning gets accomplished,” Dhlamini said. He admitted that the targeting of a Christian audience may have come across as narrowminded, but insisted that the term ‘narrow’ didn’t have to be viewed negatively. “The Bible says, ‘Wide is the way that leads to destruction and narrow is the one that leads to life’,” he explained. Commonly known as Comedian Joshua, the 30-yearold stand-up performer aimed to use his most recent show to clear up misconceptions surrounding Gospel Comedy. His experience in the comedic sphere taught him that when Christians hear the term ‘comedian’, they often assume the jokes will be blasphemous, even before they have seen his act. “Pharisees think I mock God, but actually I mock
Satan… King Solomon said ‘He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him,’” Joshua said. Joshua was well aware that the idea of Gospel Comedy is still an unfamiliar one, so a small attendance did not discourage him. He held onto the conviction that he was called by God, not by people. “I would say the show was a success regardless of the few people that attended because it was captured and the video will reach out,” he said. Highlights from the show can be found on Joshua’s growing YouTube channel, titled ‘Comedian Joshua’. He created the channel to prove that “Gospel Comedy is pure and Godly.” A larger audience will lend their ears to Joshua in early February at a youth conference in Pretoria North, where his message will continue to break boundaries in a predominantly nonChristian industry. Neither worried nor intimidated by this prospect, the confident comedian identified laughter as a need that would always be in demand. “I am not forcing Christians to love comedy, I know they need it, just like we don’t force sinners to receive Christ, but we know they need him,” he said. Ronél's big singing plans 2015 was a great year for Ronél Landman. Graceland hosted their own “Idols” competition with The Bulletin as media partner. Ronél won one of the semi-finals. She sang for the first time in front of a big crowd in the finals. Although she didn’t win the competition she made a very good impression on everyone. This young and vibrant young woman has big plans. She wants to make singing her career. It is a competitive market with everyone dreaming of “making it big”, but not all has what it takes. Ronél is one of the exceptions. She has a clean, full voice that is bursting with emotion, and is very mature and well controlled, even though she had no musical training. Ronél’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah (Alexandra Burke version) was absolutely spot on. She handles the low notes with the same ease as the high ones. It is as close to what Leonard Cohen would have wanted it performed. Listening to her “In the arms of an angel” by Sarah McLaughlin a sense of peace ascends on the listener as the notes flows with absolute ease and confidence. Ronél was born in Trichardt and attended Laerskool Kruinpark during her primary educations and the Hoërskool Oosterland during her high school years. Hoërskool Oosterland proved to be a start to a lot of singing for Ronél. Her first big step was when
she entered the “Oosterland’s Got Talent” competition. She sang a song by Joe Niemand called “genoeg is genoeg”The teachers were blown away. Ronél sang a song by Dana winner, “Dreams are made forever” for the talent evening, and her first appearance before a sizable crowd. “It was scary” says Ronél “it was indescribable, the best feeling on earth” The next thing she knew 2015 has arrived. This was an important year, Ronél had to do matric! This year saw Graceland “Idols” as well as Oosterland’s revue. Ronél was cast in the lead roll and it proved a great success. The highlight was performing the revue in front of capacity crowds in the Johannes Steggman Theater. Three nights in a row! A competition followed at Our Place that boosted her confidence even further. Be Sharp studios in Boksburg is currently recording her first CD. Keep a lookout for the release of this CD as the Bulletin will let two listeners win a copy each as soon as it is available. Proposed release date is in March. Ronél will be performing at Eish!! soon and the Bulletin will publish the dates as soon as we can. With favourite songs such as: In the arms of an Angel, Hallelujah, My Immortal, The Story and Go your own way, it can only be a performance not to be missed.
Graceland hosted a Health and Fitness day on Saturday. There were a number of stalls around the hall. A marathon fitness class was also presented that lasted for nearly the whole day.

“Dis ‘n kameraadskap waar jy ‘n goeie vriendekring opbou,” het Barend Buitendag, KSA SO streeksvoorsitter, gesê.

Donkey Derby raises money Saturday night saw the first “Donkey Derby” held in Govan Mbeki Municipal area. The Highveld Bowling association held a fund raising event on Saturday night in the form of a Donkey Derby. The night started innocently enough with guests arriving early and chatting outside the hall at Multilink in Trichardt. Patrons were soon ushered in and the bowling fraternity meant business. A few ground rules were dished out in a stern manner with only little effect. One had to stay seated as waiters were arranged to serve each table. The waiters were players from the region, and one has to say well done to the waiters. The service was excellent! Maybe just a note or two before I continue, the evening was a fund raiser for the Highveld Bowling Association (HBA). The main aim was to raise funds to help the provincial players financially to compete against other provinces. But enough of that. The first “exercise” that everyone had to participate in was a wallet loosening exercise. It was very clear that they meant business. No money was to remain in anyone’s wallet. There were plans afoot to make sure that we all give freely and even enjoy it. R20 notes were to be held in the air and a game of heads and tails were played. But it was no game! I knew that from the start. I kissed the R20 note goodbye and enjoyed the feeble
efforts by some to win an elusive and measly R100. If only they knew what was coming. Without giving away the game plan it will be most difficult to explain what plans they had for us unsuspecting wallet carriers. I can say that it was in the form of horse racing but with a huge twist. René Reynecke of Multilink sponsored the venue and food. The food was excellent. The enthusiasm grew with every race as patrons started to get into the swing of things. HBA’s plans seemed to be working as everyone wanted to empty his wallet. Each race was met with loud cheers from the crowd and as the race drew on the cheers grew more intense with tears of joy running down the winners faces, well it looked like it. The evening was very enjoyable and everyone had an excellent time. Over R40000 was raised that would go a long way in helping with things such as travel expenses of the players. I now understand why the game is played so slowly, the players attended a Donkey Derby. But some things are better left unsaid! Bowls are played at Sasol Club on arguable the best kept bowling lawn in Mpumalanga. Please come and visit them on the weekend. You might even stay.

“Dit is ‘n bog storie dat ‘n vrou soos ‘n man sal begin lyk as hul gereeld gewigte oefen.” Voorbereiding neem 12 weke, oftewel, drie maande. Jenine het steeds geoefen terwyl sy swanger was met haar en haar man,
“My kinders is my lewe,” het sy gesê.
