Forced evictions at Sakhisizwe

R

esidents of Sakhisizwe near Evander had to stand and watch as their dwellings were destroyed on Tuesday, 20 August. The community had been served with an eviction notice during November last year but entered into negotiations with Sasol, the legal landowners. The Bulletin spoke to Chief Mahlangu who stated; “We are not here to interfere but to observe, this is a legal process.” It is alleged that a Community Property Association was (CPA) formed. The CPA was mandated to handle the negotiations and to keep the community informed. This allegedly never happened. “Some of the CPA members do not even stay in the community,” said Chief Mahlangu. One of the “Landowners” told The Bulletin that he bought the stand for R12000. He also spent R35000 on building his house. “I have nowhere to go to,” he said to The Bulletin as he stood between his belongings. The people that sold the stands are allegedly living in the RDP section but were nowhere to be found when the evictions took place. Evander Police called for the defrauded people to come forward and submit their statements together with the proof of any document they received or receipts to prove that they had bought stands at Enkomeni (Sakhisizwe). Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, spokesperson for Evander SAPS, said that a docket of fraud was already opened and they did encourage people to submit their statements so that the police could investigate. Alex Anderson, Head of Group Media Relations of Sasol released the following press statement: To ensure the safety of community members, the Secunda Sheriff with assistance from a private security company and the SAPS, evicted a group of unlawful land occupiers in Evander. The occupiers had built structures on land owned by the Sakhisizwe Communal Property Association (CPA) and a registered servitude of Sasol Mining. Amongst reasons placed before the court (when Sakhisizwe CPA and Sasol Mining obtained a court interdict on 4 December 2018) is that the area is unstable and prone to cracking due to past and current mining operations. The illegal occupants therefore face serious safety risks. In the spirit of openness, transparency and mutual respect, the Secunda Sheriff on multiple occasions engaged with the unlawful Sakhisizwe occupants and served them with a notice and court order informing them to move. Regrettably the notice and court order were both ignored and the community continued to build more informal houses, leading to forced evictions by the Sheriff. Sasol always aims to proactively engage stakeholders and to build mutually beneficial relationships. The eviction action was a last resort after numerous unsuccessful engagements with the community.

The safety and security of Sakhisizwe community members remain a top priority. Community members are also advised to refrain from paying any monies to individuals to buy stands on Sakhisizwe as this land is unsafe and not for sale. The police were present to maintain order but no reports of violence were received.

manufacturing of drugs were found in her possession. She subsequently appeared at the Protea Magistrate’s Court and the case was remanded to 23 August pending further investigation whilst she remained in custody. Meanwhile, in Mpumalanga, seven suspects aged between 29 and 69 were arrested for allegedly operating a fully functional clandestine drug laboratory. Drug manufacturing equipment and a haul of Mandrax tablets with estimated street value of over R210 million were seized. The seven suspects are expected to appeared at the Ermelo Magistrate’s court. The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, has welcomed the Narcotics seizures, the arrests and the dismantling of the drug laboratories.

Saps search and rescue team assists German tourist On Wednesday evening, 21 August, the SAPS’ Search and Rescue team came to the aid of a 31-year-old German national, after she allegedly fell off a cliff while on a sightseeing excursion with her partner at Lisbon Water falls in Graskop. Information received indicated that she lost her balance and fell off the cliff onto an overhanging tree, where she was trapped for some time. The search and rescue team were alerted and responded swiftly thus managing to pull her back to safety, before she slid further down. The woman was rushed to hospital where she is currently receiving medical treatment. The Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, applauds all the role players for showing their mettle and for the professionalism and dedication they displayed during such a complex and dangerous operation.

Suspect remanded in custody for dealing in drugs A 22-year-old man, Simiso Jika, was remanded in custody by the Lothair Periodical Court on 22 August, for dealing in drugs. Jika’s remand comes after his arrest in the early hours after members of the Lothair SAPS who were conducting a stop and search operation, stopped a white bakkie between Amsterdam and Carolina road at Mpuluzi T-junction. The members introduced themselves to the driver and requested to search the vehicle. Upon searching, the driver, out of guilt told the police that there was dagga inside the vehicle and that he was transporting it to Rustenburg in North West Province. Police proceeded with the search and discovered six maize meal bags and four plastic bags loaded with dagga rolls, weighing about 91.965kg with an estimated street value of R140 000. Jika was swiftly arrested hence his remand today. He will appear again at Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on 29 August for a formal bail application.

Double murder suspect to be sentenced The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court sitting in Middelburg sentenced Themba Josiah Thubane, 41, on a string of charges ranging from house breaking with an intent to commit crimes of murder, pointing of anything which is likely to lead another to believe it is a firearm, kidnapping with the intent to commit crimes of murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping,

conspiracy to commit murder as well as murder. On 28 January 2018, Thubane, alongside with Thokozani Msibi, 32, Knowledge Wezi Mhlanga, 25, as well as Mthobisi Brilliant Mkhize, 23, allegedly broke into a house in Vosman near Emalahleni. The suspects then pointed the occupants with something which was likely to lead another person to believe it was a firearm, and forcefully took 13-yearold Gabisile Shabane as well as Welcome Nkosikhona Ngwenya who was 15-months old. They (suspects) heartlessly threw Nkosikhona in a river stream while still alive and killed him mercilessly. The court heard through a guilty plea which was rendered by Thubane and duly accepted by the court, that the suspects proceeded further killing Gabisile and decapitating her body, took body parts then buried the remainder of her body in a shallow grave at Cullinan in Gauteng. On Monday, 19 August, all the suspects appeared for trial and Thubane pleaded guilty for having taken part in the atrocious activities rendered against the victim. However, Msibi, Mhlanga as well as Mkhize denied the allegations and they were remanded in custody. Their matter was rolled over to 25 May 2020 to 12 June 2020, for trial at the same court. Thubane will hear his fate on 23 August. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, indicated that this was one of the most difficult cases police had to face. However, the investigators worked tirelessly and cracked it hence the arrests. He mentioned that the community should not take a cue from the suspects who heard a myth that killing a person with albinism can bring you fortunes. General Zuma dispelled that myth and said this is pure greed and gross criminality coupled with violation of the Constitutional Rights of others. The court heard from Thubane that the motive behind the killing of Gabisile was to use her body for muthi purposes, for them to make their business flourish hence the dispelling of this myth by the Provincial Commissioner.

Police looking for missing elderly person The police in Vosman near Witbank are appealing to the public to assist in locating 79-year-old Phillimon Mnyamane Komane, who has been missing since 15 August. Mr Komane was last seen by his family on 15 August, at his home, Ext 9, Kwa-Guqa in Witbank, when they went to work and left their grandfather alone, as they used to do. When they came back from work, they found no one in the house and tried to look around the neighbours and he was not found. The family phoned the relatives, unfortunately he was nowhere to be found. When they left him, he was wearing a brown formal jacket, black Grasshopper shoes and a brown wool scarf. Komane is dark in complexion. The police has in the meantime opened a missing person inquiry for inquiry. Those with information or the whereabouts of Mr Komane can contact Investigating Officer Warrant Officer, Jabulani Fakude at 078 5817 632.

Heartless suspects arrested and remanded in custody The police in Mpumalanga are elated with the arrest of three heartless suspects who are alleged to have killed three men execution style.

30 August 2019 The arrest of the suspects, Collen Lukhele (26), Tumi Vuma (27) and Piet Muziwempi Nkosi (30) came in the wake of a missing persons’ enquiry which was registered on 5 August. According to the information contained in the enquiry, a woman came to the Belfast police station to report that since her husband and his niece left home on 4 August, they have not come back. An investigation was launched by the police which led them to Siyabuswa policing precinct, where they discovered a vehicle belonging to the husband of the complainant burned. The astute investigators became persistent in their course, hence there was a preliminary break through. They then went back to the Belfast policing precinct to source more information regarding the disappearance of the victims. Information surfaced that the victims were shot and killed allegedly by the three suspects who then dumped their bodies alongside the old Belfast-Middelburg road and the bodies of the victims were indeed recovered. Whilst still on this investigation, another piece of information of a man from Witbank who was also reported as missing surfaced. The police at Witbank and Belfast jointly worked together on the investigation regarding the man who was also found dead. Information led the team to Kwaggafontein where the vehicle of the third victim was recovered in possession of a man who told police that he had bought the vehicle. According to the collaboration of the circumstances, leads pointed to the three suspects as the being responsible for the death of the third victim. The suspects are also allegedly involved in a string of violent criminal activities that took place in Limpopo province. Lukhele, Vuma as well as Nkosi have appeared before the Belfast Magistrate’s Court pending further investigation and will reappear at the same court on 2 September facing charges of murder, possession of illegal firearms and ammunitions. They were expected to appear at the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on 27 August, for bail application as well as in Limpopo Court for various crimes committed there.

Man to appear for string of housebreaking incidents A 28-year-old suspect Thulani “Ngobeni” “Malamule, appeared before Belfast Magistrate’s court on 23 August, for house break-ins in Dullstroom that took place this year alone. The arrest of the suspect came after police received information about a suspicious man who has rented a room in Kabokweni. The neighbours’ suspicions were triggered by the movements of this man as during the day, he will lock himself and his girlfriend inside the room then at night will be seen going out and coming back late. The police at Kabokweni approached the room of the suspect, where he was found in possession of 2 x stolen TVs and an electric appliance that were reported as stolen in Dullstroom. It was further uncovered that the man is a long time wanted suspect involved in nine house break-ins in Dullstroom only. Malamule was previously convicted in 2016 to three years for similar charges of house break-ins, in the same year before his sentencing, he escaped from Dullstroom police cells but was rearrested shortly after. On 21 August, he appeared in the Belfast Magistrate’s Court for being an illegal immigrant in the country.

Several workers started protest actions at the Albany bakery in Secunda. They were demanding a large salary increase. The workers protested in front of the bakery. The workers alleged that they were sitting around when a vehicle arrived. They stood up and approached the vehicle when members of the security company and the SAPS opened fire with rubber bullets. One worker was hit in the face and he sustained a serious injury to his eye. The workers also claimed that he was beaten with rifles by the security personnel as

he was lying on the ground. There were conflicting stories as to how he obtained the eye injury. A taxi was also hit during the shooting, losing its back window in the process. The Bulletin contacted Nevashnee Naicker, Corporate Communications Director, Tiger Brands and received the following statement: “Tiger Brands confirms that 92 workers belonging to the National Transport Movement (NTM) trade union embarked on a strike on Tuesday, ahead of wage negotiations at the Albany bakery in Secunda. The striking employees

became violent, threatening on three occasions to stone customer vehicles who came to collect bread from the bakery. The Secunda SAPS have confirmed that they intervened with rubber bullets and stun grenades to prevent an escalation of threats and stoning of vehicles. One person sustained injuries as a result and is being treated in hospital.” The Bulletin reported on similar actions last year where one person was stabbed. It is unsure whether the strikes had an impact on bread supplies in Govan Mbeki Municipality.

Oupa.”

“Jan, my hoofseun.” “Piet. My eerstespankaptein.” “Paul, Oos-Transvaal bokser.” “Marius

Britz.” Hy kyk my in die oë, en dink diep na. Hy soek na woorde, die skoolhoof. En dan kom dit uiteindelik: “Ek en jou pa is saam op die kerkraad!” So glip jou lewe verby.

besadigde aftree Kia’s? Om weg te kruip vir Vader Tyd? Dylan Thomas se woorde word die eggo’s van ‘n lewe: “Do not go gentle into that good night, / old age should burn and rave at close of day; / rage, rage against the dying of the light. / Though wise men at their end know dark is right, / because their words had forked no lightning / they do not go gentle into that good night. / Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright / their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, / rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Steeds, in die “dying light”, bly jy vir jouself dieselfde persoon as lank gelede. Oupa.

Plasma donation at SANBS

A new and exciting thing has hit Secunda… Plasma donation! The Bulletin was honoured enough to have been one of first plasma donors on the new machine! Donating plasma is like donating blood except that thanks to a specially developed machine the red blood cells and platelets are returned back into your blood stream with the help of a little saline. To donate plasma all the same rules apply as when donating blood except with one little difference: Type A and Type AB blood is preferable. Plasma is used by burn, trauma and cancer patients. Not all plasma is the same. It can differ

in the kinds and amounts of antibodies it carries. If someone has a certain antibody in their plasma they can be seen as a special donor. Having a unique blood type (only 4% of the population has the AB blood type!) can make someone a special donor too. To donate plasma the same rules apply: eat beforehand and hydrate yourself. Sleep well the night before and try to avoid smoking for approximately 30 minutes before donating. The donation takes about 90 minutes and you’ll be ready to get back to your busy day! You can donate plasma every 2 weeks! Make an appointment today and save a life! – Ané Prinsloo

Kriel: second most polluted in the world Greenpeace India recently commissioned NASA satellites to study and illustrate the extremely high levels of air pollution. It was shocking that the area around Kriel ranked second on the list for sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions word wide, after a nickel smelter in Russia. In the same breath it can be believed, as Eskom has 12 power stations in the area and Sasol’s coal to liquid plant is also a contributor. The Bulletin recently reported on Sasol’s emissions abatement programme. A few weeks ago, there was an article in The Bulletin regarding the threat that Sasol is facing regarding their sulphur emission standards. The article said that by 2025 Sasol has to comply with the new sulphur dioxide emission limit of 500 milligrams per normal cubic metre. In that same article Sasol released the following media statement: “Sasol is on track with the implementation of abatement technology in accordance with these roadmaps to meet the new plant standards by 2025. Improvement associated with the implementation of the roadmaps can already be demonstrated.” How emissions are formed: The coal is sourced and delivered to the power station. (Inherently South African coal contains large amounts of sulphur, which in the combustion process is released as sulphur dioxide.) From there the coal goes to

the mills and from there to the power station furnaces. This combustion process heats up the water and turns the water into steam. The steam is utilised to turn the turbines and generate electricity. Coal burns at approximately 1300 – 1400 degrees Celsius. When coal burns, non-combustible gases are released. Some of these gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and various other non-combustible gases and are released into the air via smokestacks. “Previously the Department of Environmental Affairs set emission targets for various gases. Filters known as precipitators were installed in the smokestacks to minimise the content of the released emissions. These targets were lowered from time to time to comply with international standards. The new target for these emissions in terms of SO2 (sulphur dioxide) was set lower, but today is not met due to inefficient filtering systems at the Eskom power stations. These filtering systems are installed in the smokestacks.” a source told The Bulletin. These non-combustible gases that are released into the air that cause the air pollution, are more toxic to humans than what we think. They are the cause of many respiratory diseases that are more detrimental to children, pregnant women and the elderly. – Ané Prinsloo

From the Dusty Streets of eMba to Chairman of Engineers

VACANCIES

VAKATURES

Mishael Mashele at 34 years of age, from the dusty streets of eMbalenhle, has been recently elected as the first black and also youngest Chairman of the South African Institute of Mechanical Engineers (SAIMechE) Mpumalanga Highveld Branch. The Mpumalanga Highveld branch covers the total area from Witbank across to Standerton and as far east as Ermelo. It has a total membership of more than 280 mechanical engineers. SAIMechE is the senior body representing the discipline of mechanical engineering in South Africa. It covers all fields of application as diverse as automobile, energy generation and manufacturing. Established in 1892, SAIMechE is over 100 years old. Mishael’s family relocated to eMbalenhle when he was the tender age of 5 and has been here all his life. He attended school in Thistle Grove Combined School and went on to do his undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria. As luck would have it, Mishael got a job opportunity in Secunda. He took on this challenge and never looked back. Apart from his activities at SAIMechE, Mishael is also the Mpumalanga Ambassador of an NGO called MADA that runs a Boys2Men program mentoring academically performing kids who have absent fathers. He does regular motivational speaking engagements in schools in townships in and around GMM. Mishael, being a firm believer in collaborations, played a key role in hosting multiple World of Engineering and Artisanship (WOEA) Exhibitions in eMbalenhle and Bethal bringing big corporations like Sasol and other engineering contractors to work together all in the interests of

advancing the engineering community and ultimately alleviating poverty through academic empowerment. Mishael is currently the Engineering Manager at CCI Engineering & Projects, which offers specialised engineering solutions to companies such as Sasol and Eskom. “I would like to thank Claude Bentley, Philemon Kgoloko and Abe Swart who gave me the necessary training and guidance throughout my career. I would also like to thank the SAIMechE committee for entrusting me with this portfolio. I would also like to make a strong request to all the members of SAIMechE in the Highveld, the organisation is as strong as its active members. Let us use the platform to fulfil SAIMechE’s mission and vision, which is to serve our needs while promoting the continued supply of appropriate engineering skills to meet South Africa’s needs. The country is in dire need of appropriate engineering skills which can only be transferred through appropriate mentor-mentee paring. Apart from mentorship programs, SAIMechE hosts a number of industry visits to leading companies, it also hosts evening papers and lectures given by experts in their respective fields and networking sessions such as our annual golf days. All engineers, technologist and technicians are invited to join and be a part of this progressive institution. And finally, to the youth of our nation, we as the youth have to move away from our sense of entitlement. Until we foster a culture of hard work it will be extremely hard if not impossible to steer the county in the direction of prosperity. Equip yourself with the right mindset, the right work ethic and surround yourself with people who are on the same mission as you are, then the sky is the limit!”

Toks en Tjops kept the audience entertained

LEGAL NOTICES

“Toks en Tjops” entertained a huge crowd at Stoepstories on Friday night. Kruinpark played host to the team from “Toks en Tjops” as a fundraising event. The crowds filled the open spaces where the smell of spitbraai filled the air. Doane Smith entertained the crowd with his singing before Jakkie Louw took over and rocked the stage. Succulent lamb on the spit was served with pap and salads. Drinks were on the table and the atmosphere became very pleasant. Toks van der Linde came on stage to start the show. He was joined by Breyten Paulse and Jimmy Stonehouse as well as Vaaitjie. The group spoke to JC Oosthuizen from Kruinpark, an U/13 learner. He spoke about his achievements on the sport field. The evening was a huge success and over R130 000 were raised. Kruinpark certainly raised the bar on this occasion. Laerskool Kruinpark would like to express their thanks to the following people: The teams from Toks en Tjops; Jimmy Stonehouse, Jakkie Louw, Doane Smith, Jeandre Venter and Sheldon Brierley from Stoepstories, Trichardt; Elvio Bettencourt from Fireplace Secunda; Christo of D’Vine Guest House Secunda; Pieter of Jumbo Meat, Kriel and Michelle of Fresh Ideas.

Social Blackball at Panda’s Part 2 of 8 Blackball Socials A competing but very similar set of rules has been promulgated by the larger World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), under the game name “blackball” to better distinguish it from the American-style game (for which the WPA also promulgates the world-standardised rules). It was intended that “blackball” would unify the various existing British-style rulesets (presumably also including the WEPF rules) although this has not yet happened. The governing body for WPA blackball in Europe, with numerous national and local affiliate groups, is the European Blackball Association (EBA). At Panda’s we play in a Handicap format. All players will receive a ball handicap based on skill level1 - 4 (your team should not exceed a team level of 8). Example if a level 1 plays a level 4. The level 1 player will be able to remove 3 colour balls after the ball colour has been selected. This would give the level 1 player a 3-ball advantage. All levels will be

determined by Cue Sport specialist, Hendry Erasmus. Socials in South Africa has grown in the past 4 years and seen up to 30 teams from all over South Africa competing in the most prestigious social event on the calendar. The past 2 years we have seen players from Panda’s Cue sport competing with the best. 2017 Abdul Gani (Panda’s) was crowned SA Social Single Champion. 2018 Jackson Mashetsi (Panda’s) was crowned SA Social Single Champion. With Panda’s Cue Sport rated currently the best social club in SA, we can assure you that you would play with the best socials in SA. The NEXT Social SA Championships (NBF) will take place in Bloemfontein in Feb 2020. YOU could be part of history by joining Panda’s Cue Sport. Maybe you could be the next SA champion or see yourself in TEXAS, USA in 2020 at the CSI World Social Championships. The next and final league for qualification starts 3 September. Don’t miss out! - Hendry Erasmus

Botterill’s sweet success

Sugar! The staple of the Dalton region, which not even the Norwegian weather website yr. no knows about. Founded in 1850 by the Brits, who left when the Germans moved in, remains a tiny hamlet, where the local Spar is the big shopping attraction, as long as you don’t want to buy cigarettes or alcohol. The local church apparently runs it...The UCL sugar mill churns its way through 810,000 tonnes of the crop. While there, I was also told the town hosts the world’s largest exporter of charcoal. So, farming country, then... and the Dalton farmers are enthusiastic in their support of the rally in their community. Zane Rencken, if you – like I – was wondering – was a young regional rally competitor who lost his life in an industrial accident last year; so the Natal Motorcycle and Car Club decided to honour his memory by naming their regional event after him last year. Such was the enthusiasm for the rally; it earned national status this year! 143.5km of competitive rallying was squeezed into 11 stages in a compact, one-day event. Drivers described it as tight and technical after the recce, with quite a few rough patches. And for the fourth time in five outings, a round of the SARC was won by Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy Lyle in their Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Etios R2N. Toyota’s preevent press release stated Botterill was aiming to wrap up the championship in round five, something that couldn’t happen. Or could it...? Jono van Wyk/Barry White (Swazi Cowboy Ford Fiesta R2N) won the opening stage in spite of running first on the road. The rest of the field was left floundering in a cloud of dust amongst the very tall sugar cane and forests, where the cooling breeze could not disperse it in the two-minute gap between cars. The organisers acceded to competitors’ requests for a three-minute gap, which was granted. AC Potgieter/Nico Swartz (Lake Umuzi Volkswagen Polo R2N) won Stage 2 and took a slender lead over Botterill and Van Wyk, who found a vehicle in the stage and was (a) stuck behind the errant local and (b) blinded by dust. Botterill then put his foot down in Stage 3 to win the first of five stages, taking the lead which he was never to lose. The fight over second place was fierce, with Potgieter and Van Wyk shading each other. The Ford crew, though, started to pull away after Potgieter suffered a puncture in Stage 5, which also caused the driveshaft to pull out. After the stage, Potgieter was 30 seconds off second place. Van Wyk then encountered wandering pedestrians in Stage 6 which cost him a handful of seconds to Potgieter but held a by now comfortable 25 second lead over the VW pair. The next pair of stages were thrilling: Van Wyk won

Stage 7 by a second from Botterill, with AC just 2.9 seconds slower. Stage 8 saw Potgieter set the scratch time, 0.6 seconds quicker than Botterill, in turn 0.4 seconds over Potgieter. The Toyota team had a 36 second lead and had clearly slowed to ensure they stayed out of the scenery but just to make a point that they were not to be toyed with, set another stunning time and left Stage 10 with 50.9 seconds in hand. The championship, at least for drivers, was settled in the last stage. Potgieter suffered a steering failure; barrelling along at around 120km/h on a straight piece of road, the car suddenly snapped left, ploughing through 80 meters of cane. Game over, sadly. Eventually, the car was extracted, and Swartz handed in his time card, which reflected a time of 56 minutes 53.1 seconds. They were time barred and excluded; nil points. With both Vacy Lyle and Swartz having each missed a round, the Co-Driver’s championship is still wide open; the Toyota man has 14 points on Greg Godrich, with Swartz dropping to third. But there are still 32 up for grabs. Chris Coertse/Greg Godrich claimed their first podium of the year, the Rally Technic Mazda2 R2N surviving three overshoots, two of which were at the same corner of the same stage when it was repeated. JJ Potgieter/Tommy du Toit (Agrochem Ford Fiesta R2N) ended fourth. The Gauteng farmer suffered a broken gearbox mounting in the first stage, hampering them through stage two as well. Once repaired, JJ battled to find a rhythm and had to deal with a puncture in SS10. Rory Eland/Robbie Coetzee

(Subaru Impreza WRX) and the whole team, bounced back from their tragedy after the last event in the Cape (which was acknowledged with a minute’s silence at the driver’s briefing) by winning the Open Class and taking fifth overall. Johan Strauss/Elzaan Venter (Subaru Impreza WRX) nearly ended in a dam on stage one. The car flew over the approach, fast left kink with a drop down. The car was way too fast and went airborne, sideways, on opposite lock, landing (just) back on the road. Needless to say, he overshot the following 90-right... once calmed, the pair drove steadily to sixth overall. Natie Booysen/Johan Smit brought their Digi Mag Ford Escort Mk. 1 home to the Classic class win, ahead of Dr. Raj Jutley and Etienne Malherbe. The two swopped seats, the good doctor (who is the FIA Medical Delegate for the Safari Rally) driving his first SA event, with Malherbe reading the notes. The Datsun 160U SSS had a worryingly loud noise from the driveshaft and a puncture on Stage 10, but arrived back intact. As Dr. Raj said later: “A true doctor has to nurse his car home”. Asked why the tail-happy Datsun wasn’t particularly spectacular, he replied: “When the tail stepped out, it was completely unintentional!” Ashley/Les McKenzie (Ford Escort Mk 1) suffered a broken accelerator cable in two stages and lost oodles of time but claimed third in class. The regional competitors fared less well. The top local runner was Paulo Gouveia/ Ashley Eddie in their turbo-charged, fire-spitting Nissan Skyline. Luckily, the exhaust pokes out of the bonnet and

not the back of the car, as the boot-mounted fuel pump sprung a leak. Dean Redelinghuys/Amon Meyiwa (CTH Transport VW Polo) hit a tree stump and ripped the right front wheel off. Rather embarrassingly, it was the same tree stump he hit, with similar resulting damage) on a local sprint! Clyde Challenor/Grayham Bishop (Igen VW Polo) also found the same stump, which left the right-front suspension, strut, the lot, lying well away from the rest of the car to which it had been attached. Michael McGregor/Tommy Coetzee retired their Agrochem VW Polo R2N) after breaking the lower control arm while Mathew Vacy Lyle/ Schalk van Heerden (Fragram Tools Toyota Etios R2N) should have stayed in bed. The other Vacy Lyle had alternator problems on Stage 1, but by the start of Stage 2, were forced to retire when there wasn’t enough oomph to start. After service and running under Superally rules, they had a spin and stall; once again, the car wouldn’t start and they had to push-start it (luckily on a downhill). Idling, waiting to start stage seven, the engine packed up. And they do this rallying lark for fun... As for Botterill, he was helicoptered (by Jan Habig, no less) to Durban airport to catch a flight to Johannesburg. From there, he flew to Zimbabwe, arrived at midnight, followed by a seven-hour road trip to Monze in Zambia, to take part in the Monze Rally, which started at 7.30am. He made it, too! The next round of the SA Rally Championship takes place in Cullinan on 27th and 28th September. - David Ledbetter - MotorsportMonday.com
