The emergency room at Evander hospital looked like a war scene with al the wounded from stabbings, accidents and gunshots. Victims were even lying on the ground as the unit ran out of beds. The doctors did an excellent job in treating all the patients.

Murder on a great scale The past weekend will be remembered as a bloody and brutal weekend for eMbalenhle residents. Evander hospital was inundated with casualties stretching their resources to breaking point. The Doctors and nursing staff had their hands full trying to cope with all the wounded. They did a sterling job in treating all the patients. When the Bulletin visited the scene, wounded people were even lying on the ground on mattresses as the unit quickly ran out of beds. The staff didn’t have time to clean the blood that was spilt everywhere as the injured needed urgent attention. The Bulletin found accident victims (9 Vehicle pile-up), stab wound victims and a lot of gunshot victims. One victim that had been bleeding profusely told the Bulletin that he was struck and then stabbed with a bottle. His left side of his head was very heavily bandaged and he was drenched in blood. Some of the victims of the huge accident on the eMbalenhle/Evander

road were also admitted to Evander hospital. The Bulletin spoke to the driver of the 24 seater in the casualty ward. His said that as he came over the hill he saw the cars in front of him and he then lost control of his vehicle, crashing into an approaching vehicle. Read about the accidents on page 2 of this publication. One of the gunshot victims spoke to the Bulletin about his ordeal at approximately 04H00 Sunday morning. Hospital staff had just returned him from elsewhere in the hospital and he was sitting in a wheelchair. His chest bandaged on the front and back where the bullet travelled through his body. A chest drainage tube was fed into a container between his feet. “I was in in the tavern when I saw some fighting,” he said, “I tried to get away as I don’t like fighting.” As he tried to run away he was shot in the back with the bullet exiting the front of his chest. Fortunately, it did not hit any vital organs and he was transported to the hospital. It is alleged that the attackers were

part of a revenge group. It appears that a child was killed earlier, The Bulletin could not establish when this occurred, and that the father was set on revenge. The father then allegedly gathered forces to help and continued to the taverns Cheap Corner and Dina’s Tavern. Arriving at the taverns they allegedly started their attack targeting random people. The gunshot victim that spoke to the Bulletin said that the attack lasted more than 5 minutes and that the attackers kept firing randomly at people. All the people fell down but the attackers even shot at them on the ground according to the victim. The involvement of a father has not yet been confirmed but sources claim that it is true. The following two cases as per police reports are relevant to the random attacks namely 240 and 242/08/2018 CAS 240/08/2018 Murder and Attempted Murder On Saturday, 25 August, at about 22:05 the Police were summoned to Cheap Corner Tavern where it was alleged

that a group of people armed with bottles and firearms entered the tavern and opened fire. Upon arrival, the Police found that four people were already transported to the hospital by an ambulance and one was already dead in the Tavern. Later during the night Police received a call from the hospital reporting that two of the four that were transported to hospital passed on. The other two are still in a critical condition in hospital. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown and no arrest has been made. Case docket was allocated to D/Capt Simon Sakhile Mlotshwa 071 738 4148. CAS 242/08/2018 Attempted Murder On Saturday, 25 August, at about 20:45 the Police were summoned to Dina’s Tavern where it was alleged that a group of people armed with pangas and firearms entered the tavern and opened fire. Accidents reel GMM over the weekend There were numerous accidents in and around Govan Mbeki over the past weekend. There is an influx of people and vehicles for the upcoming Sasol shutdown that increases the traffic on the roads this, in turn, will also increase the risks on the road. Road users are cautioned to be vigilant in the next few weeks. Although the influence of alcohol in the latest spate of accidents cannot be confirmed, evidence on the scenes would suggest that alcohol plays a significant role in the causes of accidents. Speed also plays a big role as the level of destruction of the vehicles would indicate although it is not confirmed and need forensic investigations to determine the level of alcohol involved and in which accidents, as well as the speeds travelled when the accidents occurred. Friday afternoon saw the start of the weekend’s accidents with a threecar bumper bashing near ext 12 Embalenhle. It would appear that a Mercedes drove into the back of a Jeep that in turn collided with the back of another Mercedes. No injuries were reported. Info: Sectri Autobody. Later on Friday night, a Mercedes overturned when the driver lost control of his vehicle after one of the front tyres burst. No serious injuries reported. Info: Sectri Autobody A VW Polo also overturned near Walker Park golf club. No serious injuries occurred. The recovery of the vehicle took very long as a ditch hampered the recovery process. Info: Sectri Autobody At approximately 18H30, on Friday night a collision occurred on the Charl Cilliers/Embalenhle rd. It is alleged that the Ford Sierra was turning right when a Toyota Tazz overtook and collided with the Ford Sierra. The Ford Sierra landed up on the road apron and started burning. Luckily the driver (the only occupant) was able to escape in time with a minor injury to his leg. A passenger from the Toyota was transported to a local medical facility

by Langamed. SAPS is currently still investigating the cause of the collision The Brendan Village turn off from the eMbalenhle/Evander road is proving to be a huge problem area as numerous accidents occur in that vicinity. The Bulletin has reported on accidents in this area on a regular basis. A Nissan NP200 bakkie started to turn into the Mine road when a Toyota Fortuner crashed into the back of the bakkie. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Info: Sectri Autobody A nine-car pile-up occurred in the same area in the early hours (02H15) of Sunday morning. Details of the sequence of events are still very sketchy with witnesses giving conflicting information. The indications are that an accident occurred close to the turnoff. This caused diesel to spill all over the road. The cars involved in this accident are not known. The second accident occurred when a large 22/24 seater taxi came over the hill and the driver lost control of his taxi

on the slippery surface (diesel spill). The taxi then collided with another vehicle head-on. Three people were killed in the collision. The Taxi driver told the Bulletin that he climbed out of the taxi and laid down on the side of the road. He could hear how the cars then crashed into the other cars involved in the pile-up. Several people were injured in this accident. The driver of a VW Tiguan tried to set fire to his vehicle but this was quickly extinguished. Earlier on that same night at approximately 00H40 the driver of a BMW lost control of his vehicle around a bend in front of Kisme on Wilton Nkwayi-Molo rd, Evander and crashed into a large rock. Langamed transported the injured driver to Evander hospital after he was freed from the wreckage. This driver was still in the hospital when The Bulletin visited the Evander Hospital at 04H00.

Two arrested for cultivating drugs The Hawks’ Secunda Narcotic Bureau, Crime Intelligence and K9 members swept into Volksrust, Mpumalanga on Tuesday morning and detained a couple aged 42 and 58 for running a clandestine dagga laboratory. The multidisciplinary team executed search and seizure warrants at a farm in Droefheid and succeeded to seize, almost 20kg of compressed hydroponic cannabis and about 112 dagga plants valued at just over R400 000. Additionally, one handgun with more than 90 rounds of ammunition was also confiscated. The Provincial Head of Mpumalanga DPCI Major General Zodwa Mokoena has welcomed and also warned that similar unannounced swoops will continue in Mpumalanga highlighting the disturbing surge of drug manufacturing and activity in the province. “What makes this lab unique is the structure that housed the laboratory, the sophistication of the equipment that was used, and clearly the volume that was being harvested. We will not relent until we arrest those that continue to live lucrative lives at the expense of our people” said Major General Mokoena The information that lead to the arrests stems from the Secunda Hawks according to information that the Bulletin received.

The two accused appeared in court on 23 August. The case was postponed to 23 November 2018. The two accused were released on bail of R10000 each with very strict bail condition set. The following goods were recovered or confiscated: 3x laptops, 2x cellphones, 1x 9mm Browning pistol, 93 rounds, 112 dagga plants, 20kg dried product and growing equipment. Total value of goods seized are estimated at R450 000.

Trouble brewing at Vanstadensdam Primary The Bulletin responded to a call from a concerned parent to investigate certain allegations regarding the Vanstadensdam Primary school in Charl Cilliers. Upon arrival, the Bulletin found a small group of parents gathered at one of the classrooms. The Principal Mrs Nthsali, as well as Mr Sello Molepo (circuit manager) addressing the concerned parents. The Principal earlier summoned the police to assist but the meeting was conducted peacefully. Shortly after the Bulletin arrived the police ordered everybody from the school grounds. The Bulletin tried to speak to both the Principal and circuit manager but was ignored. The Bulletin returned to the school grounds after the parents insisted that the children’s toilets be inspected. The toilets were in an extremely filthy state. Pit toilets are still used at this school. Not only is it very unhealthy, it also poses a danger to the smaller children of falling in. The boy’s toilets looked as if cow dung or grass had been stored in front of the doors. The actual toilets were so filthy that it could not be used without posing a health risk. The girl’s toilets were slightly cleaner on the outside but inside it was just as bad as the boy’s toilets if not worse. One of the girls toilets was nearly overflowing with faeces due to the pit being filled up or the down pipe blocked. The Principal, teachers and the Mr Molepo were conducting a meeting in one of the classrooms. Mrs Nthsali left the meeting and we (the Bulletin) made use of the opportunity to ask her some questions. She declined to speak at first stating “you are disturbing me”. The point of the dirty toilets was raised and when asked who must clean the toilets she said “it is the children and us, they use it” The Bulletin pointed out that the state of the toilets is unacceptable. Mrs Nthsali just shrugged and tried to explain that she is new at the school. The Bulletin then emphasized the fact that she had been there for at least three years to which she gave no reply. “I don’t want anything written about me,” she said, “you will put me in a bad light.” The parents later told the Bulletin • From page 1

that they have a number of concerns that need to be addressed. They are concerned that some of their children, few in grade 4 and even grade 7 are not able to read nor are they able to write. There is a problem with the water supply and one of the staff members continually needs to arrange for water from Sasol. Mrs Nthsali allegedly removed one of the teachers, Mrs Maina Nkabinde from her classroom. Maina complained that she did not receive her salary to which Nthsali replied “I can do nothing” The teacher was employed on a contractual basis but did not receive a salary for 7 months. When Maina was appointed she did not have all the qualifications and this was made known to everyone. She has since started to further her studies to bolster her qualifications. Maina currently has a desk and chair outside

her classroom where she sits every day, hoping that her problems will be resolved. One of the other teachers, her name is withheld on her request, said that the principal is on a mission to remove all the teachers and replace them with teachers from KZN. “Nthsali has two classes to teach and she struggles to do that while at the same time attending meetings,” said another teacher. The parents called the circuit manager to arrange a meeting at the school to discuss all the problems to which he refused, stating that they must come to his office as he will not drive to them to discuss problems with them at the school. The Bulletin became aware of allegations of mismanagement of funds and the parents are demanding that the Department of Basic Education investigate the allegations.

Ds Marius Britz Jy dink jy ken iemand.

Nooit hanteer of bespreek nie. Vrouens verstaan dikwels

nie hulle mans se nagmerries, of stiltes, of woedeuitbarstings nie, of waarom klappers wat teen nuwejaar raas, hulle man so laat skrik, of laat versteen van vrees, of natgesweet laat nie. So ook by polisiemanne, noodpersoneel, beraders, selfs regslui en dokters.

“Sometimes happiness is a feeling, sometimes it’s a decision.”

Members vote to strike Enough is enough is the clear message from Solidarity members at Sasol in Secunda as the Sasol Inzalo and Khanyisa schemes controversy continues to plague workers at Sasol South Africa. Sasol announced at the end of last year that its previous employee empowerment scheme, Inzalo, will be replaced by a new empowerment scheme, Khanyisa. However, this employee-share transaction does not make provision for white employees at all, according to the trade union, Solidarity. The following is a quote from the website https://www.sasolkhanyisa. com. “Transformation in the form of share ownership in Sasol South Africa by previously disadvantaged groups, is an important legal, business and ethical imperative for Sasol. As a responsible corporate citizen, it is our ethical duty to take decisive action to contribute meaningfully towards redressing the injustices of our country’s past. We believe that Sasol Khanyisa and our other B-BBEE initiatives will deliver long-term value and sustainable ownership of Sasol by Black South Africans. We look forward to accelerating Sasol’s empowerment journey, as we seek to realise our transformation vision as a company proudly rooted in our South African heritage.” These are quoted as benefits of Sasol Khanyisa. It is this focus on black membership and the exclusion of white members that moved Solidarity to oppose the scheme. Trade union Solidarity and Sasol could not reach an agreement about Khanyisa, Sasol’s controversial empowerment scheme, at a mediation session held at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on June 14, 2018. The CCMA has consequently issued a certificate to Solidarity in terms of which its members may lawfully go on strike. “This unique certificate paves the way for white employees to strike in protest over blatant discrimination against loyal Sasol employees,” Solidarity Chief Executive Dirk Hermann said after the meeting. Solidarity commenced with the member’s meetings on August 21. According to Solidarity Deputy General Secretary Deon Reyneke, Sasol also said through its Chief Executive Stephen Cornell that it would not change or amend its inclusion measures with regard to Khanyisa, despite the fact that the CCMA agreed with the trade union in its dispute with the employer regarding its blatant exclusion on the basis of race. “What Cornell is really telling his white employees is that the company does not regard them as worthy enough, and in reality, he is challenging those employees to exercise their full rights,” Reyneke warned. According to Reyneke, a system that divides ordinary employees according to race is a recipe for racial tension. Such tension is already palpable at Sasol. “Solidarity members are not going to let it happen that they are being excluded simply because of their race. It would, however, appear as if Mr Cornell is not taking that into account, and that he considers it to be just to exclude someone simply

Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin -

because of the colour of his skin, even though he might have been a faithful Sasol employee for the past 35 years,” Reyneke said. A total of 83% of Solidarity’s members at Sasol in Secunda voted in favour of a strike in reaction to the company’s exclusion of white employees from an employee share ownership plan. On Monday 27 August Solidarity members at the Sasolburg plants had the opportunity to exercise their strike vote. The outcome was not available at the time of writing this article. It will be the first time in South African history that white employees would go on strike because of exclusion based on race. In addition to the strike, Solidarity is also planning a national protest which people from all over the country can join. According to Solidarity Chief Executive Dr Dirk Hermann, the Sasol issue is a case study on the sense of exclusion white people are experiencing in general. “We are going to launch a massive campaign by way of which people will be able to show their support to the Sasol employees. A special page has been created on www.solidarity. co.za where people can support those workers. Support for the strike has been overwhelming, which is indicative of the levels of frustration that are prevailing among our members. Sasol has simply gone too far. The rule that applies to employee share ownership plans at other companies, especially in the mining industry, is that it includes all employees, regardless of race. The underlying message that we are getting from our members’ response is that enough is enough!” Hermann said. Sasol has announced an empowerment scheme, known as Khanyisa, in terms of which its black employees will get shares worth R500 000. Khanyisa succeeds the Inzalo Scheme, which failed financially. Inzalo did include white employees though. “In practice, this means that a white Sasol employee with 30 years’ service at Sasol won’t receive any benefit, but an employee that has been in Sasol’s employ for three months will receive R500 000. Employees doing the same job will receive different benefits. This decision by Sasol will divide employees into racial camps and increase racial tension,” Hermann said. The draft mining charter recently published for comment in the Government Gazette makes it clear that an employee share ownership plan should be inclusive and may not divide workers on the basis of race. The charter only makes provision for workers that already receive compensation by means of a share scheme. Race is not a criterion. “Sasol’s scheme is in direct conflict with the mining charter and the practice in the industry. This scheme is an inflexible scheme only aimed at scoring B-BBEE points. It is not about empowerment of the workers; it is about the commercial value of a scorecard,” Hermann said. Solidarity also differs from Sasol on its handling of the previous scheme, Inzalo, and the exclusion of pensioners from further benefits in terms of the scheme • See page 6 for response from Sasol

Sasol respond to possible industrial action Sasol responded to the Bulletin’s request in regards to the possible industrial action by Solidarity members. Alex Anderson, Head of Group Media Relations confirmed to the Bulletin that they have not received notification of industrial action by Solidarity. Solidarity is only completing the voting process on Monday 27 August at the Sasolburg plant. Background Solidarity originally declared a dispute against Sasol in January 2018, objecting to the exclusion of White employees from Sasol Khanyisa Phase 2. After the second round of CCMA discussions, the CCMA issued a certificate of non-resolution in May 2018 after not being able to reach common ground. A certificate of non-resolution does not imply that Solidarity is correct or that Sasol is wrong, it means that the parties could not find any middle ground, and gives permission to Solidarity to withdraw labour and protest in a safe manner. We value Solidarity’s relationship with Sasol and will ensure that we keep the lines of communication open between us. Sasol Khanyisa Context On 1 June 2018, Sasol Limited officially launched Sasol Khanyisa after having received shareholder approval on 17 November 2017. Our intention is to create meaningful financial benefits for approximately 230 000 Black shareholders and qualifying employees and to achieve 25% direct and indirect Black ownership of Sasol South Africa Limited (SSA).

“We are aware of negative reports and sentiment expressed from different quarters of society against Sasol Khanyisa,” said Alex Anderson, “these reports are largely premised on a misunderstanding of elements of the transaction pertaining to employee participation.” Qualifying Criteria Employee participants in Sasol Khanyisa Phase 1 are ALL permanent Sasol employees, regardless of race, tenure or seniority, who were participants of Sasol Inzalo and still actively employed on 1 June 2018. Phase 2 of Sasol Khanyisa is extended to our Black permanent employees (African, Indian, Coloured), as defined by the DTI Codes of Good Practice. Qualifying employees in Sasol Khanyisa will receive equal shareholding across the organisation. The qualifying criteria for employees are as follows: 1. Sasol employees who participated in the Sasol Inzalo Employee Scheme, and who were permanently employed on 1 June 2018, will participate in Phase 1 and are eligible for R100 000 worth of Sasol Ordinary shares, or Sasol BEE Ordinary Shares which will vest in 2021. There were 6313

White employees and 11962 Black employees in this Phase at the start of the transaction. 2. All Black employees who were permanently employed on 1 June 2018, participated in Phase 2 and are eligible for 1240 Sasol Khanyisa rights to shares which will vest in June 2028 or the earlier of settlement of funding obligations. This means that the rights to shares are fully funded through notional vendor financing and any dividends declared over the next 10 years will be used to service the funding obligations and create net value at the end of the empowerment period for participants. There were 18282 Black employees in Phase 2 at the start of the transaction. Sasol’s Transformation Journey Transformation, in the form of share ownership in Sasol South Africa by previously disadvantaged groups, is an important business, social and moral imperative for Sasol. Sasol Khanyisa is not part of Sasol’s Employee remuneration or benefit structures. It was specifically designed to address the ownership component of the B-BBEE Codes and therefore Sasol Khanyisa primarily focuses on the inclusion of Black employees.

“Protea Day” within the significance of Heritage Day The Republic of South Africa has a rich history, although interwoven, a very poignant past with copious heart rendering episodes of bloodshed. The sacrifices by the Armed Forces will have to endure forever, the glaring testimony of soldiers that paid the highest price in the battle for the freedom we enjoy today. It is consequently appropriate to employ Heritage Day to remember those that went before us. Let’s honour our fellow soldiers of the Armed Forces that did not return from the blood-soaked battle

fields. Those that did return but forever suffering with physical and phycological scars, by dedicated Heritage Day to them, with the apt name “Protea Day”. The Armed Forces’ veterans of the SADFA, will be hosting, on “Protea Day”, the notorious “two comma four” run, at Lake Umuzi on DV September 24, 2018. What better way to remember the training, hardship, camaraderie and Esprit de Core between fellow soldiers, with a run that is engraved in our memory of days past?

Sasol annual funding handover to Gert Sibande District communities Sasol handed over annual funding to the communities of Gert Sibande District Municipality. The funding is intended to support two Civil Society Organisations and the Department of Health’s Community Health Care & Support Programme in the Gert Sibande region, a partnership initiative between Sasol Secunda and the Mpumalanga Government.

The Community Health Care & Support Programme was initiated to support the Department of Health in rendering improved healthcare services to communities. The aim of the programme is to implement Anti Retro-Viral treatment adherence clubs as a long term retention strategy for clinically stable patients receiving Antiretroviral Therapy in the Govan

Mbeki Municipal area. Sasol funded PSASA (Project Support Association of Southern Africa) with R3 million to implement the programme. Funding for civil society organisations is intended to financially empower Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) to deliver on their mandate and render quality social development and welfare services. This year the Leandra Community Centre received funding of R350 000 towards implementation of a comprehensive education and awareness programme on HIV/AIDS, TB and Non-Communicable Diseases. CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) was funded R350 000 towards creating Cancer Awareness and providing a platform for communities and leaders to initiate support groups for patients and cancer survivors. “In the past 12 years, Sasol has made annual donations available to 43 NPOs and Community Based organisations” said Mashudu Ndou, Senior Manager Sasol Social Investment and Ikusasa. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to contributing meaningfully to sustainable development of communities around our operations. We believe that the funding will assist organisations and the government departments in carrying out their objectives in the communities we serve.”

Disabled Golfers help raise funds Walker Park Golf Club hosted a golf day on Saturday 25 August in aid of Martin van Heerden. Martin crashed into a bridge on Heritage day (September 2017) and was flung several meters from the vehicle. The emergency services found his friend and only then realised that he was somewhere in the area. They searched for him and found him a while later. Martin suffered severe injuries and was admitted to hospital where he spent several months recovering. Unfortunately, Martin’s

right leg could not be saved and was amputated a few weeks ago. Four disabled golfers also travelled from as far as Johannesburg to come and play in the golf day. MJ van Rensburg, Club manager, Walker Park Golf Club, said that they set themselves a target of R75000 for the day but they managed to raise R160000. The money raised will be used to help pay the costs of a prosthetic leg for Martin. The wind did not put a damper on the players as they all enjoyed the golf.
