Several community groups made known their statement against the horrific crime statistics, and in particular the “Farm Murders”, by wearing black on Monday. Secunda Bootcamp in Secunda organised a walk that coincided with their morning exercise to show their support for this cause. All wore black in solidarity. All over the country people have gotten together to show their support. Although the movement started mainly as support for the “Stop Farm Murders” action, some groups have now used this opportunity to highlight the high crime rates in the country.

Black Monday Local farmers and members of the community held a peaceful protest on the N17 (Trichardt) on Monday 30 October, in support of farmers being murdered in our country.

A peaceful protest was held by local farmers and public on the N17 close to the Trichardt tollgate. A little later the N17 was again closed by farmers from the Bethal area. Each day, 52 people in South Africa are murdered. This is one of the highest murder rates in the world and every person in our country knows the feeling of fearing for their life and the lives of their loved ones. Every day, seven women and children are murdered and in the last year, 74 people in rural communities have been brutally murdered. The rural safety crisis affects all who live in rural areas, both

farmers, farmworkers, their families, and other residents. “It is now time for the specialised units, which were successful at targeting specific crimes such as rural safety units and anti-drug and gang units to be re-instated. These were disabled with no effective alternative in place,” says DA Cllr Encee van Huyssteen. “Every life lost in these tragic crimes is one life too many.” “The crime rate is too high in South Africa” says FF+ Cllr Aranda NelBuitendag, “and Pres Zuma is doing nothing in curbing the spiralling crime in our country.”

According to the recently released crime stats, 954 people were murdered in Mpumalanga during the 2016/2017 financial year, meaning that nearly 3 people were murdered daily. This 11.1% increase is the highest percentage increase when compared to other provinces. The report also reveals that in Mpumalanga, there has been an increase in the following crimes; contact crimes increased by 2%, property related crimes are up by 1.5%, attempted murder is up by 19.1%, robbery with aggravating circumstances up by 11.8%, and common robbery up by 7.4%.

Dié steenkoolmyn is ‘n paar jaar gelede 7km vanaf die beplande Witfonteinmyn oopgemaak.

Gemoedere vat vlam op mynvergadering

Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin -

Plus Divas not afraid of cold

Saturday’s freezing weather did not stop the Mpumalanga Plus Divas Club from hosting their first annual pool party at Fortis Hotel in Evander on Saturday. Plus-sized and skinny women from as far as Johannesburg and Pretoria attended the party. Even a few guys showed up to show their support. “The plans were made a long time ago and nobody expected it to be cold this time of the year, but my friends called me this morning and gave me moral

support. They said we are going to have the party regardless of the cold,” founder and blogger for Plus Divas, Gugu Zulu, said. There was music, photos, dancing and games like Twister and Chess. Plus Divas was originally only for plussized woman, but these plans changed and the club is now taking standpoint against all body shaming. The plus stands for positive body image. “I realized that not only plus-sized women get body shamed, and people

need to know that everyone’s body is perfect just as it is and they should feel comfortable in their own skin,” the 34year old Gugu, who works as a forensic police officer in Secunda, said. Plus Divas Mpumulanga started when Gugu, a plus size model, made friends with other models while doing photo shoots in the city. “My model friends and I decided to start clubs in different provinces and already has one in North West, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein,” Gugu said. She did a

local model search and she and her 10 models do fashion shows and photo shoots and are dressed by Milady’s. They are going to do another model search soon and have big plans for their club. Gugu is also a deputy chairperson of the local charity organization hash tag # 6 am, which she runs with Allen Keys (chairperson) and Mo Mile (executive member). They recently gathered sanitary pads for schools in Bethal, Leslie, eMba and Secunda and will be hosting their toy-a-kid event in December where they will gather toys for orphans.

- Gwendie Venter

From the Kitchen...

Dit hang soos ‘n newel om my gemoed. Somber, bekommerd, belemmerd deur al hierdie goed wat my slimfoon en gemoed besoedel, staan ek by die kettingwinkel in Langebaan se tou by die kasregister om te betaal. Voor my staan ‘n ou tannietjie met haar einde-van-die-maand-aankope: een rol toiletpapier, ‘n halwe brood, ‘n liter langlewe-melk. Ons praat oor die prys van kos. Sy sê vir my, plastieksakkie bronsmuntstukke in haar hand: Onse mense kry swaar, meneer. Toe, skielik, groet die opsigter by die kassiere iemand agter my wat ook in die ry staan, wat verjaar. En skielik begin sy sing: Happy birthday to you.

Maandag dra ek swart.

Sasol informs about careers Sasol hosted a day for career opportunities on Wednesday. A total of 80 Students were invited to join in this informative event. Pupils from different schools attended and had the opportunity to ask questions and get direct answers from Sasol experts. “We are creating the inspiration with students to choose mathematics and science as school subjects, because all Sasol careers, except some at the mining division, requires these two subjects. You don’t necessarily need distinctions, but you do need math and science and not math literacy. With this day we can show them what career options they have if they continue with these subjects,” Janneke Greef (communications) said. “We decided to make it open to the sons and daughters of permanent Sasol employees who are over 16 and have mathematics and science as subjects to show that we really care for our employees,” Janneke said. There will be another career day next year and we are aiming to do it annually. The pupils were taken on a plant tour, but were told beforehand about what different careers are all about and what it is like doing that specific job. “We want to show the children where their parents work”, Janneke said. 41% of pupils who attended didn’t know what they want to become one day. The rest already knew which career they want to pursue. The most popular was engineering, a medical career, actuary and law, but a geologist, pilot and artist were on the list as well. Sasol hosted their “bring a girl child to work day” in May, which was open to the community. The very popular Sasol Techno X was

It is our hope that through Sasol Techno X, we will be able to open the eyes and minds of these learners to a world of possibilities in the fields of mathematics, science and technology,” he added.

Graceland hosts dress up day Kids dressed up for career day. Some were doctors, others laywers, there was even an orthodontist and a marine biologist on the Southern Highveld Community Development Trust (SHCVDT)’s annual career dressup day on Friday. SHCVDT is a BBBEE initiative of Graceland Casino and Golf Club. A total of 22 schools attended the event and the pupils dressed up in the career that they would love to pursue in the future. Each one presented the advantages and disadvantages of their chosen career and which subjects they will have to take to study that field. The judges were impressed with the quality of the presentations and the varied career choices. J.P Mlangeni, Chairman of SHCVCT also attended and Willem van Rooyen, General Manager of Graceland, handed out the prizes. Career Dress Up Day

is aimed at the Grade 7 learners in primary school and is a wonderful way of encouraging young people to start thinking about their career choice early. The learner is encouraged to research their career choice and write an essay demonstrating the importance of self-knowledge in career selection. They should also explain different forms of activities in the working world and be able to identify the key requirements for making a suitable career choice,” according to their press release. The top ten winners received a backpack with a dictionary, stationary, math set and calculator. The top three winners also received an additional bookprize. The overall winner was Ntokozo Vundla from Vukuzithathe Primary school (eMbalenhle), Asikelele Maguga from Allen Makhunga Primary (Bethal) was second and Mongezi Mayara from Mpumelelo Primary (eMbalenhle) came third.

Sasol Junxion celebrates 5th birthday Sasol Junxion celebrated their 5th birthday over the past weekend. The weekend was filled with a lot of action that started with the drum majorettes from Kruinpark. The crowd stood cheering as the little girls went through their paces. There were pancakes and Boerewors rolls for sale. The pancakes proved quite popular in the cold weather. There were a lot of specials that could be bought, such as “buy two loaves of Albany bread and get one free”. Saturday saw the cold weather persisting. The stalls were housed inside a tent to shield them from the cold. Elsa and Olaf from Frozen came for a visit. W/O Oosie Oosthuizen taught the kids about snakes, spiders and bearded dragons. Even some of the older people overcame their fear and held some snakes. The weekend were enjoyed by all. “it was a great success despite the weather” says Martin van Wyk, owner of Sasol Junxion.

tans die kursus by.

Shooters brace the cold The annual ARMS/Slingervel Head Shot Competition were held on Saturday. There were more than 100 participants. A marker was thrown and the shooting line was where it landed. The targets were antelope heads and were shot at from about 220m. There was a 120 sec time limit and two shots had to be shot at each target within this time limit. A sighting shot could also be shot in this time. Any calibre rifle between .204 and .375 were allowed. The wind made the shooting difficult and the cold weather didn’t help at all. It did however, help to level the playing fields. A total of 105 shooters participated in the competition and they shot at 240 targets. A minimum of 1440 shots were fired. The participants varied from very young to very old. At noon everybody gathered for a prayer session to ask God for help and guidance regarding the farm murders. A number of the participants

were farmers and the issue is close to their hearts. The crime statistics in Mpumalanga is of great concern. A factor that makes the competition so unique is that only five prizes are awarded for achievement and the other prizes are given as lucky draws. The 1st prize in the lucky draw was in the same price range as the prize for the best shot. The prizes amounted to more than R50 000. Arno Theron placed first with a score of 28/30 and 22/30, Carl Buitendag came second with a score of 28/30 and 14/30, Neil Venter came third, Celest Baily won the women’s title and Armand Mahne was crowned junior winner. The Main sponsors were ARMS (Pretoria) and Slingervel (Secunda). Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club sponsored a sausage roll to all the shooters, as well as the women’s prize. Pinnacle Auto BMW also sponsored a prize and displayed their motorcycles at the range.

“Without the range officers of the Houtkapper branch, nothing would have been possible” says Mark Kruger

of Slingervel, “they handled the shooting range and I especially thank them for making the day a success.”

1st place was taken by Arno Theron. Mark Kruger from Slingervel (Main Sponsor) hands Arno (left) his prize

2nd place was won by Carl Buitendach (right). Pieta Engels (Chairman SAJWV-Houtkapper branch) hands him his prize.

Neil Venter (right) achieved 3rd spot. His prize is handed over by Chad Gillie from ARMS (one of the main sponsors).

Lydia Fourie of Graceland (left) hands Celeste Bailey, women’s winner her prize.
