African Swine Fever!

A

frican Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported in eMbalenhle. It case has also been reported in Lekwa (Standerton). The Bulletin was alerted of the outbreak by concerned farmers in eMbalenhle. They stated that the State Vet diagnosed the disease, but is doing nothing to help them with their pigs. The Bulletin visited the area and found dead pigs in the pens as well as carcasses dumped in the stream. This disease is highly contagious and strict containment measures should be taken. A mortality rate of up to 100% can be expected. The Bulletin witnessed severely ill pigs that are and were displaying some of the symptoms of ASF. (We are not experts but were advised by the farmers.) One farmer estimated the number of pigs that had died so far is close to 2000. This figure could not be verified. Speaking to the farmers, The Bulletin learned that younger pigs usually sell at R1000 - R1500 while larger pigs can go up to R5000. That would bring the estimated monetary loss to R 2 mil - R 3 mil. This calculation does not include the larger pigs at higher prices. The Bulletin contacted the State Vet, Dr Lukhele, in Ermelo on three occasions but to no avail. The farmers said that they were told “we will come next week,” by the State Vet.

An official notice was given to the farmers on 26 August stating that there is an ASF outbreak or at the very least, one is expected. WHAT IS AFRICAN SWINE FEVER? African Swine Fever (ASF) is a disease which affects pigs and spreads very quickly. Domestic pigs show severe disease and most die; it affects all age groups. Warthogs, bush pigs and wild pigs may carry the virus but do not show symptoms of the disease. ASF typically causes high fever and rapid death is seen within 2 - 10 days on average. Death in pigs may affect as much as 100% of the herd/group. WHERE IS THE DISEASE FOUND IN SOUTH AFRICA? ASF generally occurs and is endemic in countries in SubSaharan Africa. In South Africa, there are defined ASF controlled areas in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and KwaZulu Natal Provinces where the disease occurs in wild pigs all the time (see map on our website). Movement restrictions for all wild and domestic pigs and their products apply to, from and within these areas to prevent the disease from spreading to the unaffected areas of the country. HOW IS ASF TRANSMITTED AND SPREAD? In the ASF controlled areas, the ASF virus circulates between warthogs/bush pigs/wild pigs (that do not show symptoms) and soft ticks

(Ornithodoros Tampans). This creates a continuous threat to domestic pigs that come into contact with wild pigs or their ticks. The ASF threat from wild pigs and their ticks to domestic pigs mainly occurs only in the ASF controlled areas. Illegal movement of wild and domestic pigs and their products poses a risk to pigs in the rest of the country. Risk products include carcasses and meat from hunted wild pigs as well as pork from pigs which were not slaughtered at an abattoir. Pigs can get the disease from contact with infected soft ticks or by eating meat from infected pigs. Once a pig has the disease, the virus is found in all of its fluids and meat. The virus is spread very quickly through direct or indirect contact between infected pigs and healthy pigs. People, clothing, vehicles or equipment (e.g. buckets or brooms) may transport the virus from infected to healthy pigs - even if there is no direct contact between the pigs. The virus remains infectious for long periods in the blood, tissue and faeces of infected pigs. This means that people, vehicles or equipment that come into contact with these infected materials can transmit the disease to healthy pigs. Uncooked or undercooked pork from infected pigs is also very high-risk products, even if the pig was not sick at the time when it was slaughtered. The virus may survive in pork and the

environment for months. Contaminated holdings and premises pose a high risk. WHAT IS BEING DONE TO PREVENT OR CONTROL THIS DISEASE? Prevention and control measures, there is no effective treatment or vaccine for ASF. Strict import policies are used to ensure that neither infected live pigs nor pork products are introduced into countries free of ASF. This includes ensuring proper disposal of waste food from aircraft, ships or vehicles coming from infected countries. In the ASF controlled areas, it is impossible to control wild pigs and soft ticks that sustain the ASF disease cycle. As required by the Animal Diseases Act (Act 35 of 1984), pigs in the ASF controlled areas of South Africa have to be kept in pig-proof pens, camps or kraals to prevent contact with wild pigs. Movement restrictions apply in these ASF controlled areas. It is critical to ensure that meat from warthogs or infected pigs is not fed to susceptible pigs. All successful eradication programs have involved: 1. Rapid diagnosis; 2. Slaughter and proper disposal of all pigs on infected premises; 3. Thorough cleaning and disinfection; 4. Movement controls and 5. Surveillance. The media liason of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries undertook to supply an official statement regarding the ASF outbreak by Tuesday.

snippets Provincial Commissioner warns public to be wary of false job listing advert The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, warned the public/ job seekers about a bogus job listing advertisement that indicates vacant positions for internship opportunities within the service. The advertisement has been circulated on social media platforms. Members of the public are therefore warned not to fall prey to such malicious scams, as there is currently no internship or learning programme posts available nor has the province put out such an advertisement. Such adverts are misleading and are usually intended to extort money from victims/ job seekers. The public is also urged to be vigilant and to contact their nearest

police stations for clarity to confirm the legitimacy of such adverts in future. Jobs in the South African Police Service are not for sale. Legitimate vacant posts are advertised through the media (print and electronic) as well as the SAPS website. The Provincial Commissioner therefore categorically condemns the criminal tendencies of these unscrupulous individuals spreading false and misleading information with the intent of targeting unsuspecting victims.

Pensioner sentenced to life imprisonment for rape of minor The Mhala Regional Court handed down a life imprisonment term to a 63-year-old pensioner, who cannot be named to protect the minor, for raping a six-year-old minor. The incident occurred on October 2017, at Welverdiend Village, outside Thulamahashe. The court heard how the accused threatened the minor who was sitting outside her grandmother’s house before taking her to the toilet where he raped her and threatened to kill her if she revealed what had happened. The following morning, the little girl’s brother called her mother after she saw that she (girl) was struggling to get out of bed. After checking up on her, they noticed injuries on her private part. The girl was then taken to hospital for medical assistance where it was confirmed that she had been raped. The mother reportedly confronted the accused and he apparently confessed to having committed this evil deed. The matter was then reported to the police who acted swiftly and duly arrested the accused the following day. The court also heard that the grandmother, who was staying with the victim and her siblings was in a relationship with the accused and when the child reported the incident to her (grandmother), she tried to cover up for the accused. The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma welcomed the sentence and applauded members of the South African Police Service for their hard work and determination in collecting all the evidence that positively linked the accused, leading to this conviction and a long sentence.

Two suspects remanded in custody for human trafficking Atif Ali (27) and Subuj Miah (30) were remanded in custody by the Nelspruit District Court on Tuesday. It is alleged that the two Indian males recruited and trafficked four Bangladeshi nationals who are currently being kept at a place of safety after they were freed from captivity in a joint operation by the Hawks Mpumalanga, Crime Intelligence and Nelspruit Dog unit on Friday. On Friday, the team followed up information of people who were being held captive inside a house in Nelspruit Belview Estate. The four travelled from Bangladesh via Dakar to Mozambique. They were allegedly forced to walk to South Africa until they were picked up in Komatipoort and transported to the house in Nelspruit. The victims alleged that their captors phoned their relatives in Bangladesh and demanded ransom money for their release. The two suspects were arrested on the premises and have been charged with trafficking in persons. They are expected back at the same court this coming Friday.

Investigations are continuing.

Drugs worth R2.2 million seized - suspect arrested A 35-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Nelspruit District Court today after he was arrested with approximately R 2.2million worth of Mandrax. The suspect was arrested during a joint operation led by the Secunda and Middleburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation teams, assisted by the Nelspruit TRT after information surfaced of a vehicle transporting drugs from Mozambique to South Africa. The vehicle fitting the description was spotted and intercepted on the N4. Mandrax tablets were found in the vehicle, with an estimated street value of R 2.2 million and the suspect was arrested. The Provincial Head for the Directorate for Priority Crime investigation Mpumalanga, Major General Zodwa Mokoena, has applauded the members’ efforts in the arrests of the drug peddlers. “The recent arrest comes a few days after we dismantled a multi-millionrand narcotics laboratory. I also appreciate the community commitment in providing information about criminal activities in the province,” said Major General Mokoena.

Disciplinary actions to be taken against six officials for alleged corruption Disciplinary action will be taken against the six licensing officials by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison for allegedly being involved in corruption in the Lekwa Licensing Office in Standerton. The officials were arrested on Monday, 26 August, for allegedly falsifying vehicle ownership registration on the national traffic information system to enable truck owners to avoid payment of vehicle licensing fees, including penalties and arrears. The Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) national traffic anti-corruption unit and SAPS have been investigating this matter since 2017. According to a statement issued by the RTMC, it is estimated that the Mpumalanga Provincial Government has lost more than R67 million in unpaid fees because of corrupt activities. The officials appeared this week at the Middelburg Regional Court and were each granted bail ranging between R5000 and R 20 000. Community Safety, Security and Liaison, MEC Gabisile Shabalala, said although the department awaited the necessary processes to unfold, corruption should not be condoned. She said that officials had to live within their means and not be involved in corrupt activities to live beyond their means. “Government should help us eradicate corruption and not be a party to perpetuating it. Those who are found on the wrong side of the law should face consequences because they tarnish the good work that many other officials are doing,” she said.

Police looking for murder suspects Police in Mpumalanga is looking for suspects who allegedly attacked and killed a 51-year-old man at his house in

6 September 2019 Witbank on Wednesday, 28 August. It is reported that on that fateful day police received a complaint of a shooting incident and went to investigate. Upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of the man lying in a pool of blood with bullet wounds to his head. They proceeded to his house and found his wife who had been brutally assaulted and the house having been ransacked. She allegedly informed the police that three armed men stormed in and demanded money and further threatened to put her grandson in the oven if they failed to comply. They assaulted her after she had informed them there was no money. The suspects took seven firearms and two television sets before fleeing in the wife’s vehicle, a Suzuki Swift, which was later found abandoned at Kusulile Offramp along the N4 road. The suspects are still at large. Anyone with information that will assist police in their investigation is urged to contact Sergeant Lery Rangwaga at 072 737 2003 or call the Crime Stop Number 08600 10111.

Motor vehicle theft syndicate stopped in their tracks On 2 September, two suspects who are regarded as a syndicate according to the manner they operate will appear before the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court, facing a string of charges of vehicle theft. Their arrest came after an Intelligence-Driven Operation conducted at Msogwaba near Nelspruit on 29 August. The two men arrested, aged 31 and 34, are suspected to be a part of a motor vehicle theft syndicate. The operation was launched after police were looking for the 34-yearold man, who was wanted to relate to vehicle theft. The search led them to Msogwaba where they found the suspect they were looking for in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, with two bulletproof vests inside the vehicle. A further probe led to the arrest of his accomplice at Kabokweni, who was also found in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. Whilst the police were detaining the duo, seven more victims came forward and reported that one of the suspects had sold them stolen vehicles. He was reportedly running a scam where he would allegedly inform the victims that he bought repossessed vehicles and resold them. One of the victims, a 44-year-old Traffic Officer, allegedly paid the suspect R68 000 for a vehicle and was told he would receive the registration papers at a later stage. After three weeks, he took his car in for a service and later received a message from a dealer in Johannesburg informing him about service booking quotes, which made him suspicious. He then took the vehicle to the Nelspruit Vehicle Identification Services (VIS) where they confirmed that the vehicle had indeed been stolen and cloned. Another victim, a police officer, was offered a vehicle valued at R55 000, for which he paid R40 000 cash and was told to fetch it at Protea Glen in Pretoria. The victim is alleged to have asked a police friend to accompany him to fetch the vehicle and he took it to VIS, where it was confirmed that it had been stolen at Hillbrow, Gauteng. The other victims also narrated similar stories. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, once again warned members of the public to do a thorough background check before purchasing vehicles and any other valuable items.

ANC defied DA service delivery motions The council meeting that took place on 29 August dealt with a large number of issues that are going to affect the residents of Govan Mbeki. First and foremost, a motion that was tabled by DA Cllr Mariaan Chamberlain which focused on the maintenance and refurbishment of water infrastructure in Govan Mbeki was accepted for a referral to the mayoral committee. This motion aims to address from various aspects water scarcity due to a lack of maintenance on dilapidating infrastructure, which residents of Bethal, eMzinoni, eMbalenhle, Kinross, Evander and Leandra areas have experienced increases in the past year. Following the consideration of the mayoral committee, the DA considers the possible implementation of this motion of utmost importance towards the functioning of water infrastructure

and the access that residents have to water. However, unfortunately, two other motions that were submitted in 2018 by the DA were unsatisfactorily responded to by the mayoral committee. A motion that was submitted by former DA Cllr Marietjie Fourie which was aimed at improving removal of waste and crediting businesses for nonremoval of refuse was considered, to our disappointment, by the ANC-led mayoral committee as irrelevant and impossible to implement. In addition, a motion that was submitted by DA Caucus Leader Cllr Ciska Jordaan which aimed to expedite the handover of the municipality’s electricity license to ESKOM and keep the community updated with regard to its progress through imperative

public participation was given an outdated response; detailing that it was impossible to implement since the electricity regulator must be given 12 months’ notice following the council resolution indicating the decision to relinquish the municipality’s electricity distribution license. By the time the council had considered the recommendations of the ANC Executive Mayor, Thandi Ngxonono, the 12-month period mentioned had already lapsed. Furthermore, the council had considered several financial and performance reports, emphasising the non-performance of the Govan Mbeki Municipality and its ever-growing debts towards ESKOM and Rand Water. The municipality’s consistent inability to pay its monthly accounts are further incapacitating its ability to serve its

eMbalenhle police hosted meeting with community to discuss crime in the area More than 25 cases of assault, gang rape and murder reported to the eMbalenhle police station in only one week forced the hands of the eMbalenhle police to call for a meeting with the community to discuss the way the forward. On Saturday, 24 August, community members came in their numbers to the Risko Fakude soccer stadium to hear what was going to be done by the eMbalenhle police to stem the violent crimes in their community. All speakers’ fingers pointed to a group of young men from BaSotho tradition “Porokosiya” as being behind the senseless crimes perpetrated in the area. Speaking on behalf of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Tebogo said it was time that community and police joined hands in fighting crime. Street committees should be established that would monitor the area at all times. He also blamed the court system because police did their work, which was to arrest criminals and the NPA and courts didn’t play their respective roles. Representing Vukanini taxi association (Vukta), Mr Aron Mahlangu said the issue of crime in the community affected their business in the area because they depended on the community. So, if the area they were operating in was no longer safe, it would affect them negatively. He said Vukanini Taxi Association was ready and prepared to work with the police in decreasing crime in the area. Mr Tsepo Lugkele said the problem

in eMbalenhle was that the families’ structures were dysfunctional. There was no formal structure of father and mother raising children together, teaching them to do good. The issue was the lack of role models in the community. Young boys didn’t have upstanding citizens in the community to look up to. He also blamed the power cuts that had been happening in and around eMbalenhle since early this year, saying that crimes occurred more when there was load shedding in a particular area. All parties involved agreed that the problems started when there was no power. Delivering the keynote address Br. S Cele said that police worked with dockets and formal statements. People didn’t come forward with information that might help the police in doing their job. Instead, people rush to social media platforms to raise their level of dissatisfaction. He also explained the various departments that needed to be involved before a person could be convicted, saying there was the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as well as the Court and those departments only worked with tangible testimonies. The Police arrest criminals but community members fail to come forward to make a statement before the court of law. The unfortunate part was that no one from the Govan Mbeki municipality was present, said Br S.Cele, because the police were also complaining about poor infrastructure in eMbalenhle, saying that police vehicles couldn’t access some areas in the community and that the power cuts

Man stabbed to death at eMbalenhle A young man who made a living by selling boiled eggs and sweets in and around the streets and schools of eMbalenhle was stabbed to death on Monday night, 26 August. It is alleged that he sold an egg to a man at the old Engen garage in eMbalenhle. When he demanded the money for the egg (R3) the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the young man to death. An inquest docket has been opened at eMbalenhle police station and the

suspect handed himself over to the police last night. No statement has been issued by the eMbalenhle police so far. Comments and condolences to the deceased’s family are pouring in through different social media platforms from the eMbalenhle community. Some even go as far as saying it would be better if the suspect was released to the community so they could deal with him themselves following this senseless murder. Sandile Mkhwanazi

were done by the municipality. He also emphasised that police visibility, especially at night, was crucial because that was when crimes were happening. Representing the chiefs (ubukhosi), Mr Mabena said what was happening in the area was very painful and as chiefs, they had received numerous reports of BaSotho tradition (ingoma) operating outside of the jurisdictions. These are the people to be blamed because the community didn’t know what they were teaching those children in the initiation schools. These young boys came back from their initiation with very bad behaviour. He concluded by saying they had already started with a program to monitor the initiation schools across Mpumalanga province because there were a lot of unregistered initiation schools operating in the community. Ps Mahlangu spoke on behalf of the Council of Churches and said there was no peace and stability in the community and he emphasised the importance of families playing their roles in improving the community. purpose: delivering services. The intention of the DA’s motions and proposals considered on the 29th were to implement sound governance that would focus on delivering services to the people which the council serves. The consistency with which the ANC denies the implementation of these motions and proposals and uses their majority to vote against practical and cost-effective measures to deliver quality services only proves once again their inability and inconsideration towards serving the residents of Govan Mbeki. Aligned to our responsibility towards the residents of Govan Mbeki, the DA is also the only political party that has submitted any motions in 2019 that is in the best interest of the people and will continue to monitor the responses to these motions vehemently. Mismanagement of funds and the inability to implement allencompassing measures to address the deterioration of this institution is the status quo. Only a change in the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s political ruling would allow a change in the way it is currently being governed. A Change that would deliver speedy services and build One South Africa for All. - Cllr Ciska Jordaan (DA Caucus Leader Govan Mbeki)

More, iewers in Kaapstad en

Jy dink aan Emmylou Harris: “...spinning unheard in the dark of the sky, and this is our glory if this is goodbye..”

Military Veterans Day The SA Defence Forces Military Veterans Day is held annually on Heritage Day, September 24. On this day we create the opportunity to socialise and renew our camaraderie as well as for our Sector’s Units to compete nationally in activities that connect the youth years of the veterans with those experienced during the war. Namely “Kettie Skiet” and training hand grenade throwing. It also provides an opportunity to engage community members in our vision of a better South Africa. The assigned designation for this Military Veterans day is “Ops. Jag Arend” The Republic of South Africa has a rich history, although interwoven, a very poignant past with copious heart rendering episodes of bloodshed. The sacrifices by the Armed Forces, on both sides, we will have to endure forever, the glaring testimony of

soldiers that paid the highest price in the battle for the freedom we enjoy today. It is consequently appropriate to employ Heritage Day to remember those that went before us. Let’s honour our fellow soldiers of the all the Armed Forces that took part in this war and did not return from the blood-soaked battle fields. Those that did return but forever suffering with physical and pshycological scars, by dedicating Heritage Day to them. The Armed Forces’ veterans of the SADFA, will be hosting, on Heritage Day, the notorious “two comma four” run, at Lake Umuzi on 24 September. What better way to remember the training, hardship, camaraderie and Esprit de Core between fellow soldiers, with a run that is engraved in our memory of days past? Come and enjoy the two-comma-four with us! - Aart Reedijk

OK MiniMark opened in Charl Cilliers

VACANCIES VAKATURES

Residents of Charl Cilliers were excited on Thursday morning as they waited for OK MiniMark to open its doors. The new store is located next to MBT Petroleum on the main road. The Bulletin spoke to some of the shoppers as they braved the last of the winter chill. They were all very happy and couldn’t wait to enter the store. “Now we don’t have to travel to other towns anymore,” said one shopper, “this will save a lot of travelling.”

The management was frantically busy to finish stocking the last of the shelves in preparation for the opening. As the door opened a small rush ensued but all the shoppers were smiling. The new store will surely serve the community well as they had to rely on small farm style shops or travelling to other towns for their shopping. The shelves are well stocked and there is ample parking. Congratulations on this initiative!

Local businesses donate to GMM Fire Station The Bulletin rallied together with local businesses to ensure that the Secunda Fire Brigade, who serves our community, has new equipment sponsored to them. The sponsors were: Talisman (Johan van Schalkwyk) and Highveld Mica (Pieter Viljoen) donated stationery and other equipment and Kinross Retreaders ensured that the Secunda Fire Brigade’s bakkie has brand new tyres and the wheel alignment was perfect. The Bulletin would like to thank these businesses for their generosity and for supporting the Secunda Fire Brigade, who selflessly serve our community every day without a second thought of the danger that might lurk in fighting fires.

Vinnig is nuwe vriendinne gemaak, wat jou laat dink het oor die woorde van die liedjie “A Stanger is just a friend you do not Know” van Jim Reeves.

2019 Visual Arts and Design competition One of the most difficult things for educators to do in today’s world is to keep up with all the new and exciting methods of teaching to ensure that children stay up to date and engaged in classes. A new abbreviation has hit the educational world: STEAM. Everyone is familiar with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, but STEAM incorporates a very important subject people tend to forget about… Art. In the last few years, art has had a very positive impact on the education system. With the Science and Engineering worlds over-capacitated there are holes in other industries where art plays an important role. For instance, art can play an important part in for example Civil Engineering. A Civil Engineer oversees the creation of everyday infrastructure. Art allows this type of engineer to think of more creative ways to e.g. design new and improved water and sewage reticulation systems. If one looks to the field of architecture, one great designer comes to mind -

Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi’s designs were years ahead of those of his peers and art played an immense role in all his brilliant designs. The latest students embracing art are those of Highschool Evander. These creative souls recently participated in the 15th Provincial FET Visual Art and Design Competition in Nelspruit. The theme for this year was WATER. The reason for the competition is for the Department of Education to encourage children to take Visual Arts and Design as subjects. This has been successful as the learners who take up these subjects have embraced each and every aspect of this initiative with great enthusiasm. The competition had four categories: Category A – All entries from schools that formally offer Visual Arts as subject. Category B – All entries from schools that do not formally offer Visual Arts as subject. Category C – All entries from schools that formally offer Design as subject. Category D – All entries from schools that do not formally offer Design as subject.

Firstly, the artwork and different design projects were judged by districts. From there the best works were entered as provincial entries. All the districts’ best artwork and design projects were finally judged at provincial level. The Top 20 winners of each category received merit certificates and the Top 3 learners in each category received a trophy. Highschool Evander wowed the judges with their artwork and designs! 12 Learners entered the competition and 10 of the art pieces were exhibited. 5 of these learners were in the Top 20. The 5 learners were: Nkosinathi Mailsela, Keamogetswe Meselane, Lucky Sibande, Musa Jiyane and Modise Pule. These learners all received a merit certificate. Modise Pule (Gr. 10) won first place in Category C, Design, Musa Jiyane (Gr. 12) won second place in Category B, Visual Arts and Prosperity Sindane (Gr. 9) won first place in the GET Mpumalanga Arts Show competition. Prosperity also won the same competition last year! Well done to all these students! – Ané Prinsloo

Lake Umuzi Soccer Challenge's Oosterland orkes mik elke jaar hoër youngest referees

Lucky Dabula of L.F.A. Katlehong selected the two youngest referees, Prince Jiyane and Thabang Moreki, of the Lake Umuzi Soccer Challenge Club to referee a big soccer tournament at Markspark, Johannesburg, this coming Saturday, 7 September. The chairperson of Wits University asked all the teams to arrive early and wished the teams good luck!

SNOOKER Back!!!!

The origin of snooker dates back to the latter half of the 19th century. In the 1870s, billiards was a popular activity amongst British Army officers stationed in India and several variations of the game were devised during this time. One such variation originated at the officers’ mess of the 11th Devonshire Regiment in 1875, which combined the rules of two pocket billiard games, pyramid and black pool. The former was played with fifteen red balls positioned in a triangle, while the latter involved the potting of designated coloured balls. Snooker has been played on a 12 foot table with 22 Balls. (1 White, 6 colours and15 red balls) Over the past 30 years, Snooker made its presence in Secunda, from an early developed Sasol (snooker at Sasol club) to today. Secunda has seen a couple 100 breaks over the past 30 years. Famous ones by Mr Robbie Grace. Panda’s Cue Sport has 2 snooker tables. These museum items from 1963 and 1965 forms part of a Snooker history in South Africa. Hainsworth Cloth, Arramith balls and hi-tech LED lighting panels, you could only expect the best at Panda’s Cue Sport. Will local hero Jacobus Le Roux be able to shoot a 100 break at the only

snooker club in Secunda, Panda’s Cue Sport? Jacobus, the most successful snooker player to date and has been dominating snooker the past 10 years in Mpumalanga and Secunda, recently played in a R20 000 snooker event at the Wanderers Snooker Club. He lost in the Quarter-Finals.

In the latest Panda Snooker Open, Jacobus Le Roux (40) walked away with a prize cheque of R 5000 and the title for 2019. He played one of the new rising stars from Secunda, Mandi Mente (24). 2 - 3 June 2020 Panda Cue Sport players will participate in the MPCS

Snooker Championships. This event will be held at the Ermelo Golf Club. The NEW season, Thursday League, will kick off November 2019. - Hendry Erasmus Follow us on Instagram: thebulletininsa

Walker Park Ladies’ “Back To School” Open On a windy Saturday morning, 31 August, Walker Park Golf Club hosted their annual Ladies’ Open golf day. This year the Walker Park team was creative with their theme: Back to School. Upon arrival an array of treats was spread out in the clubhouse: cupcakes, toasted sandwiches tea and coffee. With a cupcake or a toasted sandwich in their hands and tea or coffee, the ladies greeted each other and conversations ensued for those who had not seen each other in a while. Some ladies came dressed in school uniforms, ponytails with ribbons in their hair and golf sets at the ready. About

Anli Prinsloo

44 ladies entered the Ladies’ Open and the ladies drove from near and far to play. The first ladies teed off at 09:00 and braved the windy conditions. Two of the most senior ladies who entered the Ladies’ Open won the day. They spoke to Ané Prinsloo and told her more about their win. Lucille Lyon and Anli Prinsloo teed off at 09:04 in a three ball. They both said that they always enjoyed a day well organised, especially if the format is IPS (Individual Points Stableford). Right from the word go, both Lucille and Anli did not hold back. They showed their experience on every hole, whether it was teeing off with their

Lucille Lyon

driver, using a 5 wood in the fairway or taking on the greens. Anli played off a 26 handicap and played 46 shots on the front nine and 48 shots on the back nine. There were challenges Anli had to face during the game, but these did not deter her and she ended the day with 40 points for second place. Lucille’s amazing golf skills were evident with every shot she played. She has the ability to concentrate even though conditions were tough and the previous shot was not to her liking. She took the positive outlook and would recover miraculously. She played 39 shots on the front nine and 39 again on the

back nine with a handicap of 15 to end the day with 45 points and crowned as the new Walker Park Ladies’ Open champion! After a long and windy day on the course, the prizegiving started with a colouring competition and the best contender won a prize. Next came the best dressed “schoolgirl” and also a prize for the lady that looked the naughtiest! The day was a huge success and much fun was had. Everyone agreed that the greens were in excellent condition. The course is very dry but with summer around the corner that will change very soon. – Ané Prinsloo
