Solidarity members strike action Solidarity members began their strike action at Sasol on Monday 3 September because of the company’s staff share scheme that excludes white employees. This is the first time in the history of South Africa that white employees strike because of racial exclusion. 89% of Sasol members in Sasolburg and Secunda (combined) voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action. Solidarity Chief Executive, Dr Dirk Hermann, said to the Bulletin that this strike is about what is right and what is wrong. “Because of the exclusion of white employees it seems like a black and white thing but it is about right and wrong!” “People in Secunda have been working
for Sasol for generations, first the fathers and now their children,” said Dirk, “everything that Solidarity members (and other workers) have put in over the years are now made insignificant. This is the feeling of the majority of our members. We have already planned for three weeks of industrial action. However, this will be a clever strike. Our 6 300 members are highly trained employees of major strategic importance to Sasol. We intend to switch off a different section of Sasol each day by means of well-laid and strategic plans. We have the knowledge and influence to achieve that.” “The protest action that started on Monday 3 September, started with a work to rule approach. Solidarity
members have always gone the extra mile to get things done and by stopping this alone will have an adverse affect on Sasol.” Dirk continued: “Tuesday would be the same with the first big day on Wednesday as the first big action.” Memorandums will be handed over in support of the Sasol employees at various companies. Employees at inter alia Eskom, Telkom, Denel, several mines, ArcelorMittal, the SAPS, agricultural cooperatives, aviation companies and many more will hand over memorandums on Wednesday. One of the biggest such events will take place at Sasol’s plant in Sasolburg. The complete strike begins on Thursday with a mass meeting of the
community at the Secunda plant and the Sasol coal mines. The focus will then shift to Sasolburg and later both industrial plants and the Sasol coal mines will stage joint actions. Solidarity is requesting everybody to come and join the strikers at Charlie One, Sasol’s main gate from 10H00 on Thursday 6 September. The workers will assemble from 06H00 already. The proceedings should be finished by 13H00. “Bring a chair, gazebo and refreshments,” said Dirk, “this is an opportunity to thank the workers of Sasol for their hard work over the years and to support them in their action. We are getting overwhelming support from the community. Continued to page 3

Crime snippets Provincial commissioner warns SAPS employees to refrain from corrupt acts Nelspruit - The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, cautioned members and employees of the SAPS to refrain from illicit activities. The warning by General Zuma comes after two police constables from Secunda were arrested on allegations of armed robbery, corruption and defeating the ends of justice. The arrest of the pair came after police received information regarding a marked police bakkie with two police officers, busy offloading copper cables at a certain house in eMbalenhle, Secunda. Upon arrival, they found the copper cables, as a result, two men, Moses Bongani Maseko aged 45 and Freddy Simphiwe Ngobeni aged 36, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. The pair implicated the two uniformed police officers who were driving the police bakkie. The matter was handed over to the Anti-Corruption Unit, hence the arrest of the two members, Constables Freedom Mebu (26) and Musawenkosi Praiseman Mbokazi (33). A short scrutiny on the matter suggested that Mebu and Mbokazi had allegedly robbed some men who they found carrying the copper cables and delivered it to the
house of the suspects (Maseko and Ngobeni) Mebu and Mbokazi were then arrested on 22 August 2018 and appeared at the Secunda Magistrate’s Court, whilst Ngobeni and Maseko had appeared earlier and all of them were warned to reappear in the same court on 20 and 27 September 2018, respectively. General Zuma vowed that corrupt elements will be removed from the SAPS eventually. Secunda SAPS- On 2018-09-18 at 09:00 at Secunda Gymnasium Hall there will a Suppliers meeting. The meeting is to inform the suppliers about some changes and which documentation must be submitted when making applications when they are applying to render services for SAPS.
Thirty years imprisonment appeal fails Mpumalanga – The Provincial Head of The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation unit, Major General Mokoena, has welcomed the sentence imposed on Wade Morgan Williams (33), by the Pretoria High Court on 31 August 2018 after his appeal bid failed. Williams, an ex-employee at Londolozi Nature Reserve, was convicted on 17 of November 2015 for attempted murder, theft, theft of a motor vehicle, arson and malicious damage to property after he forced his supervisor to give him the reserve’s banking login details at gunpoint in April 2015. The accused then set alight sections of
7 September 2018 the reserve, and dumped the victim in an isolated area and took off with the victim’s vehicle. About R10 Million was subsequently stolen from the reserve’s account. The Hawks arrested Williams just outside Nelspruit on 5 April 2015 following an investigation. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 30 years effective imprisonment which he has unsuccessfully tried to appeal against.
Alleged investment scamster in court for 100 million fraud Mpumalanga – Jaco Jordan (52), an alleged Ponzi Scheme operator made a brief appearance before the Secunda Magistrate’s Court yesterday following his initial arrest in February 2018 after about 120 victims complained about an apparent bogus investment scheme involving over R100 million. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Mpumalanga took charge of the investigations in March 2018. Jordan, who had been out on R50 000.00 bail, was immediately arrested after his court appearance which was postponed to 15 November 2018 pending further investigation. He has now been linked to similar cases in Sandton, Johannesburg. He remains in custody and is expected to appear before a Wynberg Magistrate court on Thursday 30 August 2018.
Sasol strike answer

Ministers visit eMbalenhle
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Zweli Mkhize, visited Govan Mbeki municipality 31 August 2018 as part of his national programme to provide support to distressed and dysfunctional municipalities. The local media was kept in the dark by the leadership of GMM as no media invitations or any communications to the Bulletin and Ses’khona news were communicated. The council meeting scheduled for Friday was moved from the usual timeslot of 11H00 to 12H00 to accommodate the minister’s visit. The visit was planned long before but the local media was shunned once again. The Minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister Andries Nel as well as MEC Speedy Mashilo. There was also a very large entourage of dignitaries that accompanied the minister. Friday morning saw the Minister having breakfast at Sasol club. The Bulletin obtained information that the Minister and the Mayor of GMM, Cllr Thandiwe Nxgonono, used the opportunity to solicit help from Sasol to curb the spiralling debts of GMM. “We are pleased that Sasol is willing to help the GMM community and while this could help the financial woes of GMM it will surely not eradicate the maladministration and corruption that plagues this municipality,” says FF+ Cllr Deon de Vries. “Sasol should stop funding the mistakes of the ANC especially so close to elections. The ANC will use this financial injection (if any) to further their election campaign.” The entourage then proceeded to eMbalenhle, Mandela section. Minister Mkhize did a walkabout on one street. It was ironic that when the motorcade stopped he had to disembark from his vehicle and avoid a stream of concentrated sewage. The street that he walked along also had a stream of sewage flowing down the street. Here MEC Mashilo, as well as Minister Mkhize, took the opportunity to turn
the visit into a political campaigning session when they explained to a resident that she should not vote DA but should only vote ANC. The group then proceeded to the Clinic area for a quick last visit before speeding off towards their next stop, Lekwa. The Bulletin can only speculate as to the real purpose for the Minister’s visit. Surely a proper investigation or fact finding mission cannot be done in two quick stops or was the main purpose to solicit help from Sasol? In an earlier press statement from COGTA (Cooperative Governance Traditional Affairs) the following was stated: “The Minister will also meet with other stakeholders including businesses during the visit as part of promoting cooperation and partnerships in the spirit of working together to move South Africa forward so as to fix local government, under the theme: “Local Government is Everybody’s Business”. The following municipalities have been identified as distressed or dysfunctional in the province: • Thaba Tshweu Local Municipality (Lydenburg)

Solidarity members strike action We expect hundreds of people from the community to join the Sasol employees in a mass rally. There are even businesses who said they will close so that they will be able to participate.” The strike is a protected strike that means there will be no disciplinary actions against anyone although the no work no pay principle will be in force. Solidarity has planned the action to minimise time lost for the employees. The industrial action is now followed worldwide by Al Jazeera, BBC and Reuters reporting on the actions. Solidarity members will be informed of the next actions through their representatives. Sasol recently introduced a new staff share scheme, Khanyisa. In terms of this scheme, white workers and foreign nationals are excluded from this 10-year scheme. Khanyisa follows a previous scheme, Inzalo, which did include white employees. Inzalo will now be concluded in the first phase of Khanyisa. However, white persons are excluded from the second phase, which will be the new scheme for the next 10 years. Sasol, therefore, had a history of inclusion, but now it has a
future of exclusion. According to Solidarity Chief Executive Dr Dirk Hermann, in practice, the new scheme implies that a Sasol employee with 30 years’ service at Sasol will receive nothing while someone who has worked at Sasol for only three months will receive a share value of R500 000. The draft Mining Charter also stipulates that white employees may not be excluded from staff share schemes. Therefore, Sasol’s scheme is in direct violation of the mining empowerment charter and the general practice at mines. Solidarity is also calling on South Africans not to fill their tanks at Sasol petrol stations this coming Wednesday in support of the Sasol employees. People are also encouraged to wear blue on that day. Meanwhile, Solidarity applied to NEDLAC (National Economic Development and Labour Council) for permission for its members to launch legal protest action at hundreds of employers in South Africa in solidarity with the Sasol employees. NEDLAC refused to give permission, therefore Solidarity intends to go to court next week to take NEDLAC’s decision under review.

Kentekens van ‘n gewone dag, gewone take.
“Dong!!!” Totaal ongehoord. Dit het nog nooit gebeur nie. En daar sak skielik ‘n groot stuk vrede toe. Asof seun wil sê: “Hier waar ek nou is, is daar geen storms of droogtes nie. Dis lekker hier.”

werk af, of die selfoon. “Maak tyd vir jou dogter” se Reinette, “vra oor wat aangaan met haar.” Die pa’s het elkeen ‘n kroon ontvang wat hulle op hulle
dogters geplaas het. Die dogters is ‘n prinses waarop hulle kan trots wees. Hierna het almal de ontbyt geniet en lekker saam gekuier.

Ministers visit eMbalenhle In an earlier press statement James Masango MPL and DA Spokesperson on CoGTA said the following: “The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize’s planned visit to five “distressed” municipalities in Mpumalanga is little more than an ANC roadshow designed to hide maladministration at a local governance level while campaigning for the 2019 general elections.” Issues affecting municipalities require decisive action and not just talk shops” said James, “The DA has for years highlighted the severity of the sewage spills in Govan Mbeki, Lekwa and Msukaligwa local municipalities where people have lived for many years with raw sewage flowing in front of their homes while also polluting the Vaal River.” The DA has opened multiple cases with the South African Police Service and currently have the Human Rights Commission investigating the gross violation of human rights in these areas. In eMalahleni, the DA has repeatedly highlighted the severe financial mismanagement that has resulted in the municipality owing Eskom more than R2 billion while losing 42.89% of its electricity income due to its dysfunctional billing system. Thaba Chweu Municipality is one of the worst performing municipalities in the country with 10 consecutive disclaimers from the Auditor-General caused by blatant corruption and intense ANC infighting. Service delivery in Thaba Chweu has completely collapsed along with the municipality’s road infrastructure. Provincial CoGTA MEC, Speedy Mashilo, recently confirmed during the SALGA Mpumalanga Provincial Members Assembly and during a portfolio committee meeting that these five municipalities would be placed under administration, but it would seem that the ANC has backtracked from this in order to keep municipal coffers open to fund their election
campaign. “These five municipalities must urgently be placed under administration, this can then be followed with turnaround strategies that are implemented and monitored until the situation changes. Until then, no amount of talking will help the people of Mpumalanga who were robbed in broad daylight by the David Mabuza administration,” continued James, “Only a DA government can bring change to Mpumalanga because we are the only political party with a proven track record everywhere we govern.” The Bulletin has repeatedly reported on the financial problems in GMM as well as the calls for high-level interference. The spiralling debt has now reached such levels that GMM cannot solve the problem without help. It would appear that Nxgonono only knows how to contact Sasol for help and cannot run her own administration. Addressing the Mayors and Councillors gathered at the Ehlanzeni Council Chambers in City of Mbombela, on Thursday 30 August, Minister Zweli Mkhize said that apart from financial management and good governance, it was important that residents received quality services from their municipalities. “The number of protests within the province has been of great concern. It’s clear that there is a breakdown in communication between the community and municipalities.” “Municipal managers must have recovery plans which will enable all municipalities to manage its debts, these plans must be approved by the end of September 2018,” said Minister Mkhize. Will GMM lie to the minister again as they did when they were summoned to Cape Town when they submitted these plans? At the appearance in Cape Town, they stated that the budget was approved when indeed it was not. Residents are sick and tired of empty promises, self-enriching schemes and poor service delivery!

Thank you Security It is not always that people are excited in a pleasant way about other people’s behaviour but when Zodwa phoned the Bulletin there was excitement in the air. Zodwa left her cellphone in the fitting room in Edgars. Before she even left the shop she realised that her phone was not with her. She rushed back to the fitting rooms but her heart sank when she realised that someone took her phone. She approached shop security and they immediately sprang into action. They looked at their security cameras and found a likely suspect.

Edgars security then asked the Mall security to look at their cameras to try and find the female suspect. They eventually traced her to the Wimpy. The security confronted the lady that denied the allegations that she took the phone. But they confronted her again to which she then confessed about taking the phone. The phone was then returned undamaged. No one was hurt and no one was arrested. Zodwa would like to thank Edgars personnel as well as the mall security for going the extra mile in locating her phone.

Oosterland word dertig
2018 is a big year for Hoërskool Oosterland. They are celebrating their 30 year anniversary this year. On 13 January 1988, a new school in Secunda opened its doors. There was no name yet and was called “Die tweede Afrikaanse hoërskool in Secunda” (the Second Afrikaans high school in Secunda). The name Oosterland was adopted later the same year after a ship of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) or Dutch East India Company called Oosterland.
The idea was that the precious cargo of porcelain and spices would be represented in the children of the school. The ship first arrived at the Cape of Good hope on January 29, 1688, Captained by Karel de Marville. The Oosterland was lost at sea on 24 May 1697 near Salt River Mouth. Only two people survived out of more than 300 aboard. The wreckage was discovered by divers in 1988, 300 years after first arriving in the Cape of Good Hope. The school's name also refers to the East of the country
as it was called Oos Transvaal (Eastern Transvaal). The school’s motto is “Bewerk en Bewaar” (Work and Protect) from the Bible verse Genesis 2:15. Only 4 of the original personnel that started in 1988 is still with the school. Elzette Botes, she is now also Headmaster, Piet Mnqusho, Josiah Mtshweni and Martha Sikhosana. “We started with 167 children,” says Elzette “and the teachers were so few they sat in the corner at tea time.” Oosterland's celebrations will culminate with a Taptoe on Friday night. The Oosterland band will play with the Springs Boys' High band. The evening promises to be an evening that everyone will enjoy.

The Bulletin is the local media partner for this event. Dominators Den has entered 7 fighters to participate in the event. The fighters still need to have opponents identified before the fights can be confirmed. Fighters are matched with opponents of similar experience to make the fight an equal fight. They are also matched to lessen the chances of serious injury. The following fighters have been entered, Smit “Malboer” Steyn, Heinrich “The Hound dog” Wiese, Vince “His Majesty” Nkosi, Paul “Piksteel” Ronge, Hendrik “The Beast” van der Merwe, Cohen “Dr Kush” de Waal and Stefan Diederiks. Fighters from Dominators Den fought at Alberton wrestling hall on Saturday 25 August and had mixed results. Heindrich “The Hound dog” Wiese started first for the Dominators. Unfortunately “The Hound Dog” lost his fight but he fought well. It was his debut fight and he was dominating the fight but was caught in a triangle choke while grappling on the ground. This

choke is a difficult but effective move that gives the opponent little choice. “The Hound Dog” had no choice but to tap out. Sias “The Pshyco” du Toit was up next for the Dominators. He fought in the heavyweight division. Sias had to fight against a much heavier opponent. The Pshyco weighed in at 103kg and his opponent at 120kg. Sias did not take a back seat to the much heavier opponent and took all the punches while dishing out his own. It was a good fight but unfortunately, he lost in the end with a TKO. “He fought amazingly,” said Coach Cedric “The Dominator” Doyle. Vince “His Majesty” Nkosi was up next for the Secunda Boys. Vince won his fight with a TKO in the third round. Vince dominated from the word go and in the third round he managed to “Ground and

Pound” his opponent with a nonstop flurry of blows. This is a dangerous sport as was evident in the fight of Vince. His opponent had to spend the night in hospital as a precautionary measure. Last up was Paul “Piksteel” Ronge. He also had a great fight. He displayed an all-round dominance during the fight. He threw excellent punches, grappled well and his defence was great. Piksteel managed to secure a triangle choke on his opponent and unfortunately his opponent was disqualified for biting. Piksteel was understandably upset for

winning the fight with a disqualification while he was dominating throughout the fight. The event at Graceland has all the makings of an exciting evening. Please diarise the date!
7 SEPTEMBER
2018
The lake Umuzi National Rally will be hosted on the 28th and 29th September. The rally promises to be full of excitement as team AC Potgieter/Nico Swartz need to win the last two rallies in order to claim the championship. The Lake Umuzi rally is very popular with spectators and there is ample spectating spots. The ever-popular special stage at Kosie van der Merwe’s farm produces some spectacular driving with cars racing against each other in a circuit. Two cars are pitted against each other in two different directions and they race against time. The two tracks are of equal length and cross in the middle. The quarry at TW Stene is a photographer’s paradise. The water in the quarry produces spectacular photographs with water spraying meters into the air. It is also the nemesis of a number of Lune Snyman and E Strydom

drivers as the water sometimes proves to be a car killer. The water sprays into the engine compartment and wreaks havoc with the electronics. One stage, on a different section of Kosie’s farm, is long and dusty but produces high speeds and a lot of drifting. The section at Lake Umuzi is also very popular as spectators don’t have to travel to the outskirts of town. The cars always have a small ramp to drive over that should be negotiated with care so as not to damage the vehicle. The Bulletin is once again sponsoring a prize for two people to have a trip in one of the rally cars. Visit our facebook page and enter! There is a number of local people that participate in the rally. Please diarise these dates and use the spectator guide that the Bulletin will publish in the week of the rally, to plan your spectating.
