Accident repercussion The notorious N17 once again added to the accident statistics when the driver of a Toyota bakkie lost control of her vehicle and rolled. The accident took place on the Secunda side of the Leandra tollgate, approximately 2km’s away. Chantel Swanepoel (the driver) sustained two broken legs. Wouter, Chantel’s son, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious head injuries as well as chest injuries. Emergency services responded to the accident scene and Shane van der Heever from Langamed Services South assessed both injured and decided that Wouter needed to be airlifted in order to ensure that the best possible care will be given. ER24 attended to Chantel (42) and transported her to Evander Hospital, she was later transferred to Boksburg. Wouter (11) is still in critical condition in the Lenmed hospital in Randfontein. The drainage from his lungs have been removed but he is still in a medical induced coma. Please keep Wouter and Chantel in your thoughts and prayers. Unconfirmed reports states that Chantel was behind another vehicle. They both passed a vehicle that was traveling in the yellow lane. As the front vehicle passed this vehicle (driving in the yellow line) he moved into the normal lanes pushing Chantel into oncoming traffic. She swerved out of the way of the car that was in the yellow lane only to see the oncoming traffic. She then swerved back causing the vehicle to roll. If there is any witness to this accident, please contact the Bulletin with information. When transferring Wouter to
Johannesburg the Air-ambulance had to divert to Randfontein as there were heavy storms over Johannesburg. Calvin, the family pet (dog), was also traveling with them in the bakkie but is now missing. He ran away after the accident. Please help us find Calvin. The police are still busy with their investigation into determining the actual cause of the accident. Keep reading the Bulletin for further updates on little Wouter and his moms condition.

Senior Vice president Lucky Kgatle of Sasol mining handed over 18 newly built houses to first-time homeowners in eMbalenhle on Thursday 30 November. This initiative is part of Sasol’s home ownership housing project and brought the number of houses Sasol sponsored to 62. Lucky said: “The home ownership housing project forms part of Sasol Mining’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP), which aims to improve the living conditions of its mining employees in the surrounding host communities. “Sasol Mining provides subsidies to qualifying permanent employees, who are not eligible for Reconstruction and Development (RDP) houses but also, do not qualify for home loans from commercial banks. Sasol Mining recognises the importance of decent housing for its employees. These are homes of an adequate size that have the essential basic infrastructure such as water, sanitation and electricity. The provision of housing to Sasol Mining employees is a continuous process. This initiative is in accordance with the Social and Labour Plan of the Mining Charter. “Working together with First National
Bank, Sasol Mining employees are guided and assisted through the rigorous process of becoming home owners and access bank bond. “These first-time home owners are also provided with financial planning and management skills they need to ensure that they are able to service their subsidised home loans sustainably.” Sasol mining handed over 101 hoses to date. The Project leader stated that the honourable minister Lindiwe Susulu stated at a recent strategic summit: “we are going to turn South Africa into a construction site” when speaking about building homes. Schalk also said that the housing project was voted no 1 in Govan Mbeki municipality, but not only in here but also in Mpumalanga and to top it off, in South Africa! Prices were given at this last handover of this project for the most beautiful gardens in the complex. Third price (Umbrella) went to Mr. PS Muhlungu of house no 8, 2nd price (Gas Braai) was awarded to Mrs DF Ingwenja of house 88 and the first price (Slim JoJo water tank) went to Mrs PT Mtsale of house 107. Head of projects Marius Kruger congratulated Metsoweto projects on achieving a clean safety record as well as finishing the project on time.
The acting Mayor MMC Zakhile Mhlangu said that he used to play at the site when he was little. When driving to the site he observed a lot of architectural changes to the area. Zakhile stated that he hoped that the beneficiaries of these houses will turn them into homes not just houses. He also thanked everyone involved and said that this project became a flagship program. Zakhile also said that “let the prizes, that some have received, serve as a reminder of the beauty that they instil around the houses of this project. Let it serve as inspiration for others.” The program then shifted into the handing over stage where Lucky cut ribbons at the entrances to the houses and handed the new owner his/her keys. Inside were cake and a tree for every new home. Every home is very neatly finished with a small garden area. Well done to all concerned. “Sasol Mining has embarked on a housing project with the objective of promoting good health and welfare for its employees. This was done to ensure sustainable local economic development and to promote home ownership among Sasol employees within the formal housing sector”. Crime Snippits... Police arrest 30 year old Evander Police arrested a 30-year old Lesotho national for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The man was spotted travelling on the R546 between Evander and Embalenhle and police pulled over the suspicious looking Toyota Corolla. There was another occupant in the vehicle. The police officers searched the vehicle and recovered a 9mm Norinco (model 77B), of which the serial number was removed. The pistol was loaded with 9 rounds. The suspects were arrested, detained at Evander police station and will appear in the Evander Magistrate Court.

Serial offender sentenced for copper cable theft Tuesday, 28 November: A serial offender, found guilty of copper cable theft by the Standerton Magistrate Court, was last week sentenced to one-year imprisonment, and a further six months suspended sentence. Walter Basson, a former Eskom contractor, was arrested in March this year when copper items were found inside his vehicle by the Eskom investigation team which was conducting routine access control inspections on the site where he worked.
3
According to court records, Basson has five previous convictions which include rape, housebreaking, theft, using a vehicle without the owner’s consent as well as the illegal discharge of a firearm. “This proves that criminals do not limit themselves to just one kind of crime. They run a criminal enterprise where, for instance, someone who is involved in vehicle theft is also involved in drug trafficking, exposing children to substances like nyaope and flakka that are destroying our communities, this is why we continuously appeal to all South Africans to help us bring these perpetrators to book,” said Tebogo Rakau, Divisional Executive for Security at Eskom. Rakau said it might appear as though the only victims of cable theft are organisations like Eskom who have to bear the cost of replacing stolen cables and damaged infrastructure. But the effects that are suffered by society can be even worse, including prolonged power outages, which ultimately cause the shutdown of factories, loss of production time and job cuts. Unplanned power outages resulting from cable theft also affect healthcare services at clinics and endanger the lives of people who are on life support equipment at home. Rakau thanked all those who have helped Eskom in the fight against cable and electricity theft, and urged more people to report these crimes by sending their anonymous SMS tipoffs to Crime Line on 32211. -Eskom Media Desk

Ek was jare terug koshuisvader by ‘n skool vir kinders met spesiale behoeftes in Pretoria. Ek sou hom dus heel laaste moes aflaai.
Wilie was verslae. Die wêreld was skielik dof, vaal, verlate.
Home security tips for the holidays Home security should be your number one priority in your home, especially living in South Africa and even more so, when you’re planning to leave it empty when you go away on holiday, whether in December or throughout the year. South Africans are security conscious and safety will always be a priority. Having a secure home will not only protect you and your family, your possessions

and your property, but will also add value to your home. You can never be too cautious when it comes to protecting your home from unwanted intruders on your property. There are plenty of methods to safeguard your household, some are everyday habits that we already do, while other procedures require more organisation, and thanks to advanced technology, today it’s easier than ever to protect your home from potential threats. Before leaving for your holiday, it is vital that everything in your home is operational so that you have peace of mind and come back to a safe home that is intact. Triple check all doors, locks and windows before you leave and if you do not have one already, install a reliable security system whether a basic DIY one or a fully monitored smart system and have it linked to a trustworthy armed response security company. Also try adding in motion sensors, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors as well as other effective security measures such as: exterior beams, burglar-proof windows and electric fences. All detectors need to be checked regularly to ensure they are functioning and always ready. Consider putting in a CCTV camera recording system that records when movement is detected and evidences any incidents in your home. Monitoring cameras allow you to see what is going on in your home from
practically anywhere, on your phone, even if you’re half way across the continent. Make sure your property is welllit! Install energy-saving and solar lights around your whole house so that any dark corners for intruders to hide in, are eliminated, and even erecting a “Beware of the Dog” board can help deter burglars from entering your property. Lastly, install a superior driveway gate which should have an anti-lift mechanism so it cannot be taken off its rails, and lock your gate motor with an anti-theft bracket. A mobile panic button should also be available through your

armed response company in emergencies, if there should be anybody house-sitting your home while you’re away. By ensuring maximum security measures for your home are taken, it will avoid unwanted stress later on for you and your family and allow you to have a much more relaxing time away on your well-deserved break!

• ‘n Alkohol, dwelm of dobbelverslawing.
• Verandering in eetgewoontes, hetsy te veel of the min. • Verandering in slaappatrone, hetsy te veel of te min. • Lae energievlakke of rusteloosheid.

10 awesome Afrikaans words that just can’t be translated Even if you don’t “praat die taal” you’ve heard these words before – and while there’s no real English alternative, you know exactly what they mean... Even if you don’t “praat die taal” you’ve heard these words before – and while there’s no real English alternative, you know exactly what they mean . . . 1. Biltong The deliciously seasoned dried meat is a South African delicacy, and we’ve been making it for centuries. The process of curing meat with salt and drying it out was a preservation process used by both indigenous local inhabitants and settlers alike. Dutch settlers favoured using pepper, coriander and cloves in
their curing process, which gives biltong that distinctive spicy flavour we know and love. According to Biltongmakers.com, the word is derived from the Dutch bil (buttock) or meat and tong or strip. While foreigners might be tempted to call it beef jerky, like the salty snack Americans favour, anyone who’s tasted both will tell you there’s just no comparison! 2. Braai Referring to a lekker braai as a barbecue is practically offensive to a proud South African – particularly because, not only are we the best braaiers in the world, our people are among the earliest to have done so. In fact, excavations of the Cradle of Humankind fossil site have uncovered burnt animal bones that appear to have been charred on a fire that was fed with wood repeatedly, millions of years ago. And we’ve been doing it ever since! The beloved pastime was already popular before loadshedding and we have almost a whole month dedicated to it! The word is believed to have been derived from the Dutch braden ?(to roast). 3. Boerewors Ask South Africans abroad what they most miss about their homeland – we guarantee boerewors is on their list! The name of this local favourite is derived from the Afrikaans words boer (farmer) and wors (sausage). 4. Mielie Smeared in melting butter, hot-offthe-coals, mielies (sometimes spelt ‘mealies’) are a favourite side dish at weekend braais (see above). And no,”corn on the cob” doesn’t quite cut it! Interestingly, the Afrikaans word is derived from the Portuguese milho (maize or millet) and the Latin milium. Speaking of mielies . . . 5. Pap If you grew up in SA, chances are you got a large part of your daily diet from good ol’ pap! Best served with boerewors (see above), this porridgelike dish is made from ground maize, or mealie meal. It’s believed to have been derived from the Latin pappare (to eat). 6. Lekker Do we even need to explain this? It’s a word so synonymous with South African culture most tourists will have had at least one well-meaning local attempt to teach them to pronounce it at some point. “No, you must
rrrrroll the ‘r’ at the end . . .” The word comes from the Dutch lekker, which translated directly means delicious! 7. Stoep A great spot for lekker chats, boerewors braais . . . A veranda or patio in front or behind your house. 8. Gatvol Irritated, more irritated, gatvol. The emotive word is the superlative only South Africans know about. The word is derived from the Dutch gat ?(hole) and vol ?(full). Which, if you don’t think about it too hard, makes perfect sense. 9. Klap When you’re angry, you might want to smack someone. But when you’re gatvol (see above), you’ll want to KLAP them. Note: “klapping” is generally never a good idea. But if you say it, you might feel better. It’s a very satisfying word. 10. Frikkadel Italians make meatballs, South Africans make frikkadels! What’s a cocktail party without a lekker frikkadel to dip in some sweet chilli sauce? The word is derived from the French word for meatball, fricadelle. - you

Members from different churches are part of this gospel-spreading initiative and plan to bring out another CD next year. Their first CD was called Umalusi and won them the Mpumalanga gospel awards in 2015. If you want to help them win the nomination, send “National Amadodana – Amadodana Ase Mbalenhle” to 34605.

Our First Priority Seating at restaurant can be a daunting experience, you want to sit alone, far from the maddening crowd at this time of the year, lost for a fleeting moment in your own thoughts. You wait with patiently, just outside the perimeter of the everannoying personnel that line the entrance to the establishment. You notice that a place, suitable for your being alone becomes vacant, you dodge the line of uniformly dressed restaurant menu holding guards, with resolute steps. With a sight of relieve you sit down and observe your surroundings, very content with yourselves you order a refillable coffee. Then suddenly your small “private” space is invaded with mothers and their offspring, clinging to insignificant plastic bags of clothes. Children with no cheerful faces. And then I realized that they were in town to buy, the now accepted, this time of the year, routine of buying children’s clothes. If one could measure the tension between the mothers and the children on some sort of instrument, it would be of the scale. “You are
really testing my patience” one mother snapped at her child. I am doing my best to provide for you, and this is the thanks I get. You, ungrateful child.” This was the little spark initiated by the organ named the tongue, that exploded in the mother’s berating and accusing their own progenies of the same sin. Then as from out of nowhere one heard a child’s voice, as clear as a bell; “yes you did not buy me those brands named, imprinted T shirt, the other branded outfits that my friends wear, but you and your friends will be consuming alcohol enhanced refreshment from now until the end of December up to the first week in January” Deadly silence, did not only affect the group of mothers’, no, it produced a shock wave of muteness in earshot of all present. Is this period of our Gregorian calendar, were we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, not the correct moment to pause, re-evaluate your priorities, and make the allimportant choice between the laced refreshments with all its misery and the delight of your children?

Take better holiday pictures this season. Holiday and travel photos always leaves one with the feeling of missing something. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be like that. Here are a few tips for taking better holiday and travel pictures. 1. Include children in your pictures. Get down to their level. Don’t shoot from adult level. 2. Adjust your ISO and stop using flash. This takes practice as one will sometimes take photos at fairly slow shutter speeds. But if you are going to print for scrapbooking or an album the grain would not be very noticeable.
3. Don’t get everyone to always pose. Don’t always say smile or cheese. Shoot the moment! 4. Don’t always shoot pictures. sometimes you have to spend time to take in the surroundings. Spend time with the family and only take a few photographs of people opening presents. not hundreds. 5. Know your gear. You can’t struggle to take pictures and have the moment pass by. 6. You don’t have to have expensive gear to take nice holiday pictures. The newest Cellphone are amazing for smaller size pictures, even up to A4. 6. Look for interesting things and angles.

AC wins prestigious award Motorsport SA held their Northern Regions Regional Awards on Friday, December 1, at Usambara Lodge in Muldersdrift. Champions of the following disciplines were crowned, Rally, Cross Country Cars, 4X4 X-Track, Drag Racing, Oval Racing, Drifting and Spinning. A Few provincial colours were also awarded with AC Potgieter and Willem Louw the only two to receive honorary colours in the Rally section. What makes this achievement so more special as that no one received honourary colours (in Rally) for a number of years. AC received his colours for
special achievement as a rally driver. AC was crowned regional champion 2 years running and finished in the top three of the nationals for the last two years as well. William Louw received his honourary colours for outstanding work in administration. William did excellent work in ensuring that the various rallies took place and everything ran smoothly. When asked about the shift in Rally classes in particular the shift back to the S16 class from the S2000 class, AC had the following to say, “It was a good thing to shift back to S16
class, the rally is now far more competitive with no dominance from the factory sponsored cars. It is also now easier for anybody to enter a rally.” The Mpumalanga Highveld have a number of rally drivers currently competing in the various rallies. We even have our own female driver, Lune. The Secunda rally is always a favourite with spectators and competitors alike. Keep reading The Bulletin for news on our teams and the rallies. And of course, for news about the next Secunda rally. AC is quite clear about his plans for next year: Win the Nationals!
