Air show organisers slapped with R17m lawsuit over fatal crash The Pretoria News reported that the partner of world-renowned aerobatics pilot, Glen Dell, who fatally crashed his aircraft nearly six years ago at the Secunda Air Show, is claiming more than R17 million in damages from, among others, the organisers of the show. Jacqueline Eckersley said in papers before the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, that if there were more safety precautions in place and if the fire trucks acted more swiftly, Dell might have been alive today. He died in hospital on October 12, 2013, a day after the crash of his modified aerobatics plane. Dell was part of the Red Bull team which entertained the crowds from the air that day. Spectators looked on in horror and disbelief as his aircraft made a downward spiral before it hit the ground and burst into flames. It was said that he had suffered about 90% burn wounds. He was airlifted to hospital but died the next afternoon. His partner claimed that the rescue and firefighting services that were there to provide safety, were not up to standard. This, she said, led to a delay in bringing the fire under control and evacuating Dell from the burning aircraft. Eckersley alleged that Dell had survived the actual crash and that he had died as a result of the injuries that he suffered while in the aircraft after the crash, before the rescue services arrived. She instituted her claim against the Recreation Aviation Administration of South Africa (RAASA), the Aeroclub of South Africa, Air Show South Africa and Sasol Limited. Eckersley stated that special air events are conducted under the supervision and control of the RAASA, and that it had certain obligations in terms

of statutory provisions and regulations to ensure that there were adequate safety measures in place during these events. Her claim is for the loss of financial sup-port and maintenance that she would have received if Dell hadn’t died. Alleged drug dealer remanded in custody An alleged drug dealer, Joseph Tchombai (31), has been remanded in custody following his brief appearance at the Kriel Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday charged for dealing in drugs after he was arrested on the same day. The suspect was apprehended by members of the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) in a joint intelligent driven operation with Rapid Rail Police in the Central Business District of Kriel in Mpumalanga after he was found in possession of small quantities of narcotics. Tchombai was then escorted to his residence nearby where a further search uncovered additional drugs which included cocaine and crystal meth with the estimated street value of R76 000.00. The case against Tchombai has been postponed to 7 March for a formal bail application. The Provincial Head of The Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Zodwa Mokoena, has applauded the team

Crime snippets Suspects sought, others nabbed Police in Mpumalanga are looking for suspects who robbed two houses on 27 February at Zwelisha and Newskom near Nelspruit, in separate incidents. According to information at the police’s disposal, the first incident happened at Zwelisha at about 21:00 where five balaclava-clad men stormed into the yard and confronted a young boy who was parking his mother’s vehicle.

for the arrest and vowed that the Hawks will continue to raid the streets to ensure that the town is cleared of illegal drugs. For enquiries: Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi @ 071 481 3493.

The men then instructed the boy, at gunpoint, to alight from the vehicle, a Toyota Yaris, proceeded to the house where his mother and siblings were accosted. The suspects demanded money and bank cards with legitimate pin codes. Three of the suspects used the vehicle to go withdraw the money, leaving behind the other two holding the victims hostage. After a short while, one of the suspects received a call from his accomplices whereupon they robbed them of a flat screen TV and a cell phone before fleeing the scene. The family were left tied up but later managed to free themselves and alerted the police. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned not far from the scene. In the second incident, which took place soon after the incident mentioned above, prompted police to believe that it may be the same group, five balaclava-clad men who were in possession of a firearm, broke into a house at nearby Newskom, robbing a flat screen TV as well as an undisclosed amount of cash before shooting a family member and fleeing the scene with a vehicle belonging to the owner of the house. Police were summoned and the injured man rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The vehicle, a BMW, was found abandoned also not far from the scene, with the TV and the cash still inside the BMW. No arrest has been made as yet in both cases, anyone with information that may

assist in the arrest of the suspects is requested to contact Capt Vusi Thobela on 082 469 1956 or the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Meanwhile, two suspects, Jerry Mkhwebane aged 47 and Abram Butane Motloung aged 42 were remanded in custody by the Vaalbank Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 February, at Siyabuswa for business robbery charges. The remand came after their arrest on Saturday, 23 February, whereby police received information on their whereabouts. Police responded to the information and found seven suspects in all, however, five managed to escape and only two were arrested at their hideout in the area. Four pistols and 25 rounds of ammunition as well as a police hand radio were found in their possession. These suspects were amongst a gang of 15 men who stormed the Vaalbank Traffic Department near KwaMhlanga, on 21 February, stealing 14 firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash from a safe they blew up, after having tied up the security guards who were on duty. They were remanded in custody and the case postponed to 5 March for a formal bail application. Police are still searching for the other suspects, anyone with information is urged to please contact Captain Nixon Matlou at 082 303 9919, or the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Megabus workers on strike The workers at Megabus are currently on strike. They barricaded the entrance to the Megabus depot at Osizweni by sitting in the entrance. The strike or protest has been continuing since last week and the group of workers have vowed to continue until their demands have been met. The three problem areas according to the workers are: 1. The workers have all been told that Megabus would have a new company joining them as the BEE partner. The workers would want to meet the company. According to the workers, Megabus does not want to divulge information about the new company. The workers also asked about the possibility of themselves becoming partners in Megabus. One comment that was made to the Bulletin stated that in cases such as these where a new company would join the old company, the old company would abandon the ship and they don’t want this to happen. 2. The provident fund is proving to be another thorn in the workers’ flesh. Some workers claimed that they paid provident fund but they have no fund

anymore. The Bulletin spoke to one worker that showed us a woman’s name and ID claiming that his last two year’s contribution went to her provident fund. 3. The last problem that the workers complained about is their general working conditions. The Bulletin reported about poor working conditions before but the workers did not elaborate on this issue this time. There was a strong police presence when the Bulletin spoke to the workers although the protest was peaceful. The only aggression that the Bulletin observed was when the police insisted on driving through the group and the workers had to make way. The strike is affecting the community at large as workers cannot use the busses as transport and the schools have to make other arrangements at greater expense to transport children to school events. At approximately 15H00 the police intervened and dispersed the protesting workers with rubber bullets. The workers and Megabus entered into negotiations again and the workers

were promised that their demands will be adressed. This is according to the spokesperson of the striking workers. The workers have promised to return to work on Tuesday. Megabus could not be reached for comment at the time of writing this article.

Sy help haar man graag. “Hy werk so hard. Of dit nou sonskyn of stormweer is, Beeldlesers in Standerton kry altyd betyds hul koerante. Hierdie gesin kom nestel diep in my gemoed. Want nie lank daarna nie verdrink Dennis. Binne-in my is na al die jare

steeds ‘n skaafplek. Op my siel. Ek sien Dennis steeds oral. Meestal toeriste. Kindertjiekompoeter.

is vooroor gebuig. ‘n Vreemdeling in ‘n vreemde plek. No, job, no food. Jesus bless you. ‘n Man in ‘n BMW 525 met donker ruite gee ‘n paar munstukke deur ‘n halfoop venster.

Die kindertjiekompoeter in my kop onthou Søren Kierkegaard: “Our age is essentially one of understanding and reflection, without passion, momentarily bursting into enthusiasm, and shrewdly relapsing into response... There is no more action or decision in our day than there is perilous delight in swimming in shallow waters.”

500 ml koekmeelblom 10 ml bakpoeier 2 ml sout 10 ml suiker 25 ml botter of margarien 1 eier, geklits 75 ml melk 25 ml water 12 sosatiestokkies, oornag in water geweek 1. 4. Voeg die eiermengsel by die

meelmengsel. Meng om ʼn stywe deeg te vorm. 5. (Lewer 6 klein stokbrode)

A killer... Plastic

Nowadays when one sits down to drink a cooldrink or milkshake at a restaurant, you receive a paper straw. Immediately some customers would be angry as the taste of wet paper fills the mouth when all that was wanted was to enjoy that fizzy drink or milkshake. Except for the flavour, the paper straw also disintegrates. The abolishment of plastic straws was not an easy one. The world’s oceans are polluted with plastic and the marine life suffers from that. The pollution is not only from plastic straws but also from other plastic products e.g.: bottles or margarine tubs. Not only are the world’s oceans polluted but the land and waterways too. Plastics are categorised according to their size: micro debris or macro debris. Because plastic is cheaper and lasts longer, the production of plastic continues. People forget that the degradation of plastic takes much longer because of the chemical structure of it. “As of 2018, about 380 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year. From the 1950s up to 2018, an estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced worldwide, of which an estimated 9% has been recycled and another 12% has been incinerated. In the UK alone, more than 5 million tonnes of plastic are consumed each year, of which only an estimated onequarter is recycled, with the remainder going to landfills. This large amount of plastic waste inevitably enters the environment, with studies suggesting that the bodies of 90% of seabirds contain plastic debris. In some areas there have been significant efforts to reduce the prominence of plastic pollution, through reducing plastic consumption and promoting plastic recycling.” https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Plastic_pollution It is a controversial topic but the statistics talk for themselves. With the volume of plastic that is currently being used and produced it is suggested by scientists that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Here are a few tips to recycle: 1. If you buy the 2L milk bottles use them to put all your plastic inside once the milk is finished 2. Use an old coffee tin to empty ashtrays in 3. Reuse plastic bags to carry your groceries instead of buying new ones 4. Use old detergent bottles as water cans 5. 2L Cooldrink bottles can be used as herb gardens The young children and the unborn children will not know about half of the amazing creatures that are found in our oceans. Like dinosaurs, they will only have eBooks and pictures of these phenomenal creatures. Bearing the above in mind, is it not safer and better to recycle, reuse and reduce? – Ané Prinsloo

Ronde Kerk hosts International prayer day for women Friday, 1 March, was International Women’s Prayer Day. This event was globally celebrated in more than 170 countries and bring women together of all denominations, races and cultures. In Secunda the NG Gemeente (better known as the Ronde Kerk) had the honour of hosting the event this year. The church was packed and ladies young and old flooded through the doors to celebrate the day together. Reverend Mariëtte Stopforth opened the morning and welcomed everyone. She then explained that the guest speaker, Jenna-Leigh Bilong, neé February, was going to be late because of two flat tyres on the way to Secunda.

The ladies enjoyed the time waiting with a praise and worship and after that some sweet and savoury snacks and tea and coffee just to fill the gap in a hungry stomach. When Jenna-Leigh arrived the atmosphere immediately changed from anticipation to excitement. Jenna-Leigh spoke to the ladies about praying. She said that most people go to church and by Monday morning would forget what was preached. She read from Ephesians and explained that the water that is referred to in the Bible is the way we pray. When you pray it must not be a complaint but rather pray about the situation. The day was a huge success and enjoyed by all.

Die leuse was “Together-we-can”.

- Aart Reedijk

Lelanie van der Merwe is a mother that is passionate about rare diseases. As a mother of a little child that has a rare disease, she knows exactly what other mothers are experiencing with their children. Lelanie has made it her task to educate people about rare diseases. She visited Carnival Kids on Monday and explained to the little ones that sometimes people have rare diseases. The kids enjoyed the session and they could each colour a mask that they could wear. People are not educated about rare diseases in general. Here are a few frequently asked questions. What is a rare disease? A rare disease

is defined as a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people. This definition was created by Congress in the Orphan Drug Act of 1983. Other countries have their own official definitions of a rare disease. In the European Union, a disease is defined as rare when it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. How many rare diseases are there? There may be as many as 7,000 rare diseases. The total number of Americans living with a rare disease is estimated at between 25-30 million. In South Africa, there are 3.7 million people living with a rare disease. Only a few types of rare diseases are tracked when a

LPBH Charity golfday enjoyed by all

The gracious Walker Park Golf Club was the venue for the first Little Paws Big Hearts fundraising golf event on Saturday, 2 March. The club is one of the oldest clubs in our area and is a popular golf course with locals and players all over the country. We were happy to see so many faces on the golf course and people supporting our cause. We enjoyed the day and your company. Thank you to every player who participated and making the day a success. A special thank you to Pierre and Cindy Goosen who flew from Port Elizabeth to support us. Congratulations to all our winners.

Dominator’s Den rules Fightstar 38

L to R: Stefan “The Bezerker” Diedericks, Coach Cedric “The Dominator” Doyle, Vince “His Majesty” Nkosi and Paul “Piksteel” Ronge On Saturday, 2 March, five of Dominator’s Den’s fighters were on the card to fight at Fightstar 38 which took place at John Barrable in Benoni. Paul “Piksteel” Ronge’s Featherweight title fight was cancelled due to medical reasons and Stefan “The Bezerker” Diedericks’ opponent did not show up to fight. This was disappointing to the two fighters

but they stood by their fellow Den brothers. The three fighters that fought performed extremely well and firmly stood their ground. Kobus “Koevoet” Kruger unfortunately lost his fight after dominating the whole fight against Johan Horn. “Koevoet” was knocked out by Johan in the first round. Coach Cedric said that that is how the fight game goes. Vince “His

Majesty” Nkosi won his fight against Keegan Delafield in the first round. “His Majesty” beat his opponent when he escaped a guillotine choke and put Keegan into a rear naked choke. Smit “Malboer” Steyn won his fight against Pieter Volschenk after three full rounds. “Malboer” rose to victory after a unanimous decision from the judges. Coach Cedric “The Dominator” Doyle

would like to thank the Lord and Saviour for protecting them in yet another big fight night and says that he is super proud of his FIGHTERS. It takes a lot of courage to step into the cage and put it all on the line for everyone to see. The next fight night cards will be announced soon and the fighters will be ready to show their steel again. - Cedric Doyle

Sasol Glug Glug qualifies for Mpumalanga play offs

At 08:00 on Sunday morning, 3 March, the ladies of Sasol Glug Glug cricket team gathered for their warm up for the match ahead. The 1st and 2nd teams were supposed to play, but due to unknown reasons the Piet Retief team pulled out at the last minute. The Mkhondo Mighty Eagles team (a development team) was alerted that their T20 match would be earlier and they arrived at 09:15 after a two-hour drive. Once the Mkhondo Mighty Eagles team was warmed up and ready to rumble, the two captains (Terry-Lee Kleynhans (Sasol) and Mzizi Ntokoza (Mighty Eagles)) tossed the coin and Mkhondo Mighty Eagles decided to field first. The Sasol Glug Glug ladies were excited to start batting. They had a strong starting line up with Brigitte Binneman and Bianca Brummer. Unfortunately and by fluke, Bianca was caught out early in the match and Terry-Lee Kleynhans took to the pitch. The Mkhondo Mighty Eagles managed to take four of Sasol Glug

Glug’s wickets before Mariska Scholtz and Jacolien du Preez held the fort until all the overs were bowled. The Sasol Glug Glug ladies had hit 130/4 in 20 overs and had to field next. The bowling was opened by Jacolien du Preez and Elizma Heydenreich on a standard pitch. At first the Sasol Glug Glug ladies struggled to get their pace with bowling and fielding, but once Chantelle Obermeyer took the first wicket, they were on fire. Thobeka Mhlongo almost had a lucky drop of the ball when Elizma Heydenreich at silly point leaped into the air and tried to catch Thobeka but the ball slipped through her fingers… But never fear when Mariska Scholtz is near! Mariska reacted so fast and caught the ball one handed for another wicket! That was definitely the play of the match and phenomenal teamwork! Mkhondo Mighty Eagles were out for 85/7 and Brigitte Binneman was awarded the Woman of the Match Award. The Sasol Glug Glug ladies showed the true meaning of sportmanship by

applauding each new batswoman coming onto the pitch and assisting in tying shoelaces and fixing leg pads when needed. The Mkhondo Mighty Eagles put up a good fight and we wish them all best. The Sasol Glug

Glug ladies are now waiting to hear who will be their next victims: Witbank, Middelburg or Nelspruit to play in the Mpumalanga play offs and be crowned as the best club in Mpumalanga. – Ané Prinsloo
