Elusive murderer sentenced

After a long search, Siphiwe Mbonani, was caught by the Hawks and sentenced to a long time in prison. The Bulletin placed a photograph of Siphiwe Mbonani in February of this year and this photograph was the nail in Siphiwe’s coffin. An informant saw the picture of Siphiwe and contacted our local Hawks with a precise location and other information that enabled the Hawks to swoop in on Siphiwe. When he was apprehended the Hawks found four illegal firearms in his possession as well as ammunition. It was clear that the information that was supplied was correct and that Siphiwe was on his way to commit another crime. Siphiwe Mbonani was sentenced by JHB High Court (2018/10/31) to an effective 60 years of which the accused must serve a minimum of 20 years imprisonment after the Palm Ridge High Court found the accused guilty in his absentia on 44 charges ranging from murder, attempted murder, three house robberies, car jacking, assault to do bodily grievous harm, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on the following cases: Kinross case 2-34/09/2010, Springs case 17-25/09/2010 and Devon case 01-02-04-05-06-0708/09/2010. The co-accused in this matter: John Mokele, Sifiso Mbele, Mandla Panyeko and Mpumelelo Biyana were all already sentenced. Each received an effective 60 years direct imprisonment of which the accused must serve a minimum of 20 years. The accused, Sphiwe Ngcobo, died during the trial. The accused was arrested by D/W/O Ras on a warrant of

arrest issued by Palm Ridge High Court. The police released the following statement on the case: A home invasion syndicate that unleashed a reign of terror in Mpumalanga and Gauteng has been sentenced to 60 years each in prison. The syndicate was responsible for no less than 12 armed robberies in Springs, Devon and Kinross. It also emerged that some of the syndicate members had warrants of arrests issued against them spanning for more than 10 years which were never effected. In September 2010, eleven suspects went on a violent crime spree. They robbed three houses, one after the other in Kinross, Mpumalanga and stole jewellery, cash and a firearm. The victims were tied up and assaulted before the armed gang made off with the stolen valuables. The three armed robberies were executed within minutes of each other – in less than an hour. It was at the last house where the victims had the strength to contact the Devon SAPS and gave them the description of the suspects including the getaway vehicles. The local police immediately mobilised the Secunda Hawks Serious Organised Crime Unit and members from Kinross and Leslie SAPS and also Ekurhuleni Springs Metro Police. In what seemed like something out of a Hollywood movie, the heavily armed gang was confronted. A shootout ensued between the suspects and the police after the suspects refused demands to stand down. Woman arrested for child neglect

Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin -

A woman was arrested on Monday, 29 October and appeared on Wednesday, 31 October, at the Evander Magistrates Court. Zodwa Nkosi, 36, made her first appearance in the Evander Magistrates Court and was released on a warning and will appear on 16 November in the Leslie Magistrates Court. This was after a complaint was received by the Leslie SAPS by a concerned school teacher who alleged that one of her learners had been absent from school for two weeks and was experiencing stomach aches from suspected malnutrition. The matter was handed over to a local social worker. Further information was brought to the school by a neighbour who had brought the child to school and complained that she has been taking care of the eight year old girl and her younger siblings. The neighbour further stated that the children’s mother is thirty-six years old, does not take care of her children and always leaves them without supervision, not even leaving them with a guardian to take care of them. She explained an incident where the mother was not at home and left the children, aged between one year and eight years old, alone when they burned down the shack. Fortunately none of the children were injured. Neighbours came to the rescue and the fire department extinguished the fire. On several occasions, the mother left her one year old daughter with an unknown African female who was around the neighbourhood in the early hours of Saturday, 27 October and disappeared until she was found by another neighbour at about 07:30 in the morning. The neighbour eventually took to the children to her house because she was worried about their wellbeing. She took care of the children and later that night, at about 22h00, she went to

check if the mother had returned, but to no avail. The neighbours noticed that the mother only returned on Monday, 29 October, at about 14h30. That same day, at about 14h45, Constables Vilakazi and Lengwati visited the house and on arrival they found the mother and interviewed her. She did not correspond during the interview. Cst Lengwati requested that the mother be taken to the station where she could conduct a proper interview with her and the mother agreed. On their arrival at the station the interview continued and the mother admitted to have left her children unattended and confirmed that the shack was once burned down in her absence. When asked where she was, she said that she was at her aunt’s place and did not explain why the children were left behind. Cst Lengwati arrested the woman for child neglect on case 117/10/2018 Sap14 157/10/2018 because she unlawfully and intentionally left her children alone and failed to take full responsibility or care of her children who are all minors exposing them to danger, abuse and possible abduction.

The children were handed over to the neighbour who voluntarily asked to take care of them until the matter is resolved. Family members were informed about the resolution.

Crime snippets

After the victim was released from the room where the incident took place, the victim informed someone she trusts and she was given taxi fare to go to Leslie SAPS to report the matter. Police attended to the victim’s cry and a case docket was opened as per Cas 37/05/2016. The docket was then transferred to Secunda Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit for further investigation whereby Constable Palesa Monagane was assigned to investigate the matter. The investigating officer never left any stone unturned and gathered enough evidence to be used in the court of law to ensure that the suspect received a heavy sentence. The station Commander Lt Col Maluka welcomed the sentence and thanked the investigating officer for the hard work and dedication in securing the conviction.

34 Year-old convicted for rape Secunda Regional court sentenced Lucky Shabangu (34) to 15 years imprisonment for rape. This came after Lucky Shabangu intentionally raped a mentally-ill woman who was thirty-two years at the time the crime was committed. It is alleged that on Tuesday, 5 October 2016, at about 13h00, the victim was on her way to the shop when Lucky, who is known by the victim, called her into his home where he began with his evil deeds.

Full house at Evander Hospital Evander Hospital had difficulty in coping with the influx of injured people on Saturday night. Unconfirmed sources said that there had been a number of stabbings in eMbalenhle again. Patients had to lie on blankets in the passage as there were no beds available. It is alleged that a number of people visited two taverns in Mandela

section where the parties spiralled out of control. Several fights broke out and the taverns were closed by the police. The group of people continued with their fighting spree and attacked people in nearby houses, stabbing people randomly. No arrests have been made and the tavern names are not known. Police have not released a statement yet.

GMM hands over vehicles to themselves The Executive Mayor, Cllr Nxgonono, handed over twenty-two brand new vehicles last week to different departments in the municipality. These vehicles were procured with an insurance payment that resulted from several vehicles and other assets of the municipality that were burned down during a protest for service delivery in eMbalenhle. It is quite ironic that the majority party is portraying the procurement and handover of these vehicles as an achievement as it resulted from disgruntled community members who were calling for service delivery in the first place. In addition, it is apparent that the departments are not even able to use these vehicles as they are not equipped with Trackers as of yet. Upon learning that the municipality was planning on buying a number of bakkies and sedans, DA members in the Municipal Public Accounts Committee requested reasons for prioritising these vehicles while the municipality had a lack of compactor trucks and found itself in a crisis in terms of refuse removal. From page 1

The shocking response was that more vehicles could be bought, than trucks, with the amount of money available. Is this not common sense? Surely in this case, the “less is more” notion does apply! It would have been more reasonable to either procure the exact same kind of vehicles and machinery that were lost in the fire, whatever amount possible – or, to take stock of what is a necessity to deliver services more efficiently, such as the mentioned refuse removal trucks or a fire truck. There is only one fire truck available for Trichardt, Secunda, eMbalenhle, Evander and Kinross. Furthermore, the DA was disappointed to learn that during an IDP (Integrated Development Programme) consultation that took place Thursday, 1 November, that none of these new vehicles were allocated to the Bylaw Unit. The Bylaw Enforcement Unit is currently extremely incapacitated to exercise its function. This unit must constantly borrow vehicles from other departments to tend to Bylaw contraventions that are not only

generating revenue for the municipality through fines, but also upholding the rule of law and keeping our towns clean from illegal dumping and unlicensed advertising and vendors. The DA is however expecting and monitoring increased visibility of traffic law enforcement, since there are more vehicles available now to this function of the municipality. It is a shame that the residents of GMM must be tricked by the ANC into thinking that service delivery will now finally take place upon the procurement of these vehicles – as if it was the only thing that was holding back the failed and nearly bankrupt ANC-led municipality. Communities would more readily benefit if the municipality were to spend the funds wisely, similar to how the DA Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba of the Johannesburg metro had remised his own travelling from the city’s budget and allocated it towards services; or similar to how the DA Executive Mayor Solly Msiminga of the Tshwane metro had sold off the mayoral mansion and built RDP houses for the poor.

They ended second best after five of their gang members lost their lives. The other six managed to escape. They hijacked a truck, shooting the driver who later succumbed to his injuries. However, their attempted escape was short-lived after the six were cornered by the determined police team. A search of the crime scene following the shootout and the rapid arrests, the integrated team seized ten firearms which included, amongst others, R5 rifles, handguns and all the stolen goods. The six suspects, John Mokele (40), Sfiso Mbele (45), Mandla Panyeko (44), Mpumelelo Biyana (41), Sphiwe Ngcobo (37) and Siphiwe Mbonani (40) were charged with 44 counts ranging from murder, attempted murder, a

series of house robberies, truck and car hijackings, possession of illegal firearms and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Following an eight year marathon trial, the Palm Ridge High Court returned with guilty verdicts against five suspects last week Wednesday, 31 October, condemning them to 60 years in jail each. Ngcobo died during the trial whilst Mbonani decided to abscond. He was, however, sentenced in absentia. Mbonambi has since been rearrested and was found in possession of four illegal firearms and ammunition. With the 60 years imprisonment, he is still facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition of which the case is still under

investigation. Mpumalanga Provincial Hawks Head, Major General Ntombizodwa Mokoena, applauded the convictions of the criminal gang. “I want to commend the tremendous cooperative work done by the integrated teams, the investigative officers who worked under strenuous conditions after receiving countless death threats, the NPA, all the witnesses and members on the community. I hope the sentencing will bring some needed relief and rest easier knowing that these individuals won’t be around to break into their homes anytime soon since these criminals are going to spend a long time in prison,” she said.

Daar is eenvoudig nie genoeg plek nie.

Plakkershutte so vêr as wat jy kyk. Soms minder as ‘n liniaallengte teen mekaar gebou. Sommige

teen sterk deinings, sodat mens wonder hoe op aarde enige mens teen so skuinste sou kon slaap. Laat Dantè die laaste woord spreek:“Brothers,’ I said, ‘o you, who having crossed a hundred thousand dangers... you must not deny experience of that which lies beyond the sun, but to be followers of worth and knowledge.”

Lest we forget the fallen soldiers Armistice. A word that epitomises peace, truce, cease fire and more such terminologies not meaning anything and or little for millions of people around the world that are encircled in ethnic wars and genocide. Are we therefore not turning the so called “blind eye” to the conflict situations where maiming, torture and death are part of everyday life for men, women and children trapped in a vicious daily existence and survival? Let us not make ourselves believe that this is part and parcel of a world far away in another country. Living our lives, day to day, in a euphoria that this does not have any impact on our so called idyllic lives. The evidence of our living in the RSA is on par with those occurrences in our neighbouring states as well as those thousands upon thousands of kilometres away from us. Is 11 of November, Armistice day, still despite of everything, a day to remember those that paid the highest price for one’s country? The answer must be, unquestionably, yes.

Kristopher Ryan Centre fete coming soon The Kristopher Ryan Centre will be hosting their fete on 17 November from 09:00 until 15:00. The Kristopher Ryan Centre was founded in 2001 by Joey du Plessis and Mary Meyer. The centre was founded to provide children with challenges with a place to go after finishing school. The centre stimulates the children’s abilities with baking and growing their own vegetables in the vegetable garden: beetroot, spinach and other vegetables. These stimulations mentioned are only 2 of the many the centre has to offer. The children also get dance classes once a week! Recently the school started to sell

biscuits from their bakery into local supermarkets. Needless to say, these biscuits sell like hot cakes and are all made on site by the students. The ovens that are now in the bakery were sponsored by Anglo-American earlier this year. Not only were the ovens sponsored, but SNC-Lavalin also came to the table and sponsored the ingredients and the mixer for these yummy biscuits. Today the school has fourteen students and is under new management. Most of the people in the community are not aware that the Kristopher Ryan Centre is a registered Non-profit Organisation and only

It’s no longer a man’s world On Wednesday, 24 October, a group of local ladies received their forklift operator certificates. This programme was initiated in partnership with EIE Group’s Toyota Industrial Equipment and Sasol and part of the Youth Skills Development initiative. “The project was established early 2018 to create a pool of employable youths in the community, of whom 20 local female youths were trained as forklift drivers in this intake. The training, which covered theory and practical training at Sasol Secunda operations, was for the duration of two months (from 14 May to 13 July 2018). As part of the training the leaners were placed at the Sasol Secunda site in the following departments: Explosives, Secunda

Chemicals Operations; Logistics, Base Chemicals and at the Polypropylene warehouse. Ten learners had an opportunity to work during the 2018 shutdown as part of work integrated learning.” The ladies were all gorgeously dressed to a tee with smiles from ear to ear, shades of pink and red lipstick to match their beautifully made up faces and heels that were sky high. They added to the excited atmosphere when tears of joy and happiness filled their eyes upon receiving their certificates. Mr Ben Matai spoke graciously about how these women add value to the work place and how they should continue to dream and never give up on those dreams. – Ané Prinsloo

receives a small amount of funding from the government to keep the centre afloat. The centre will be visited in the next week by health professionals for screen tests including dental check-ups, eye tests and general and psychotherapy check-ups. The Kristopher Ryan Centre will be hosting their fete on 17 November from 09:00 until 15:00. The fete is said to be a highlight for all the children and they cannot wait for the public to see how well they can bake and sell their biscuits. Other stalls will also be available on the day: from wors and ribs to jams, chutneys and iced coffee. Come and enjoy in the fun on the day and do your bit to help them to remain sustainable. - Ané Prinsloo

VACANCIES VAKATURES

This exclusive and significant day and hour, 11 November at 11:00, is an ambiguous reminder not only to the families with the knowledge of a loved one’s death on the battle field but also to those who returned from the campaign, maimed and bearing physical and psychological scars. For the men, women and children, our fellow citizens, a remembrance of the cruelty we encounter from day to day in our beloved country. But on behalf of our youth, that they may witness the futility of conflict. This year’s Armistice day (poppy day) will be held at the Mukumbura Shellhole in Secunda on Saturday 10 November at 10:30. - Aart Reedijk

Toy Library competition Tuesday, 30 October, Osizweni and SNC Lavalin partnered to host this year’s Toy Library competition. The competition was hosted over two days in eMbalenhle at the Osizweni Toy Library in Jabulani Crescent. The morning was opened with the country’s national anthem sung by the kids from 11 different day care centres present on the day. After that the rules of the competition were explained to the teachers, facilitators and children. Excitement was in the air and the kids could not wait to start with the different activities! 3… 2… 1… GO! The kids started with building puzzles, arranging cards with the numbers 1 to 10 printed on them and many more activities. The teachers were not allowed to assist the children, but the anticipation was high. The teachers stood at the windows and looked on, helplessly, as the children performed the tasks. All the children that participated were encouraged before an activity and congratulated after completing their respective activities. Osizweni released the following statement: “This year’s Educational Toys competition brought together 50 practitioners and 425 learners from Day Care Centres in our community. Held on the 30th & 31st of October 2018 at the Osizweni Toy Library, this event is where the year’s activities are rounded up. Day Care Centres with their learners have been visiting the Toy Library throughout the year on a weekly rotational basis. At the end of each year, they come together to compete against each other for a chance to win one of three trophies. Ten learners from each Centre are selected. Each of these learners will take part in one of the ten set out activities. Winners are determined by compiling each centre’s aggregate score.”SNC-Lavalin had representatives present on the day that took part in

evaluating the learners. SNC-Lavalin released the following statement: “SNC-Lavalin is passionate and committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to education. In the spirit of stimulating progress and to encourage the next generation of talent, we aim to have a positive impact on the communities in which we work by fostering sustainable learning and

innovation initiatives. SNC-Lavalin has dedicated support to Osizweni, whose toy library supports thirty six early childhood development schools in the Govan Mbeki municipal area. Using educational toys, they teach teachers and children the fundamentals of numeracy, matching and sorting, hand-eye coordination and reading.” – Ané Prinsloo

Elegance Electrical supplier day Elegance Electrical hosted their annual supplier day at Sasol Club on Thursday, 1 November. Suppliers of various electrical equipment companies displayed some of their products and had time to interact with Elegance Electrical’s clients. Clients were invited to interact with the suppliers and obtain first-hand knowledge of products. The suppliers were represented by their sales personnel that also included sales and product managers. The cold and rain put a little damper on the day but it was an overall success according to Jan Koster.

CANSA for kids The CANSA team, consisting of Gisele Bosman and Natasha Philpott, hosted a walk for children’s cancer on Friday, 2 November, at Oranjegloed Primary to create more awareness around this heart rending condition. The cold did not scare any of the teachers or students away. Instead, the sound of children’s voices singing as they assembled in front of the starting point was heart-warming. The children all looked beautiful with yellow in their hair and the school’s yellow t-shirts that stuck out under their jerseys and jackets. Yellow is also the colour for Children with Cancer. Grades 1 to 3 walked first, followed by grades 4 to 7 and all the children were well behaved and interactive when they were told more about sunscreen and eating their vegetables. The walk was around the school’s netball fields, tennis courts, around the classroom buildings and back to the paved square where they all assembled to release some balloons.

Frankryk was volgende op Mienkie se lys.

Volgende jaar sal weer so ‘n dag aangebied word. Hengelaars moet solank die 1ste naweek in November 2019 oophou.

Set, pause, engage! Friday, 2 November, Sasol Rugby Club kicked off their yearend function with a bang. The night started off with the Annual General Meeting and after that the proverbial ball was passed on for the election of a new committee. With the nominations in and the voting done, the new committee was elected as quickly as a drop goal with all members in agreement of the new committee.

Next the finances were tackled along with the chairman’s report. The last year was no ruck and maul for the club due to good sponsorship and fundraising. In fact, the club was able to kick money back into the community by helping some charities. A member of the club said that they loved to support the local community because when you give back, you not only help others but develop the surrounding communities.

Kempton restricts Sasol in T20 Sasol Secunda played in the Titans Franchise semi-final against the winners of the Easterns league, Kempton Park Cricket Club. Sasol bowled and fielded extremely well to restrict Kempton to 150/8 in their 20 overs. Sasol’s best bowler on the day was Ignus Koekemoer with 2 wickets for 16 runs in his 4 overs. Sasol were humbled by a very strong bowling performance from Kempton. Kempton restricted Sasol to 89 all out. Gerald Ngwenyama was Sasol’s best bat with

31 runs. Kempton featured a number of first class cricketers and was always going to be a challenge for Sasol. The focus for Sasol will now move to the Neil Parsons Gert Sibande premier 50 overs competition. Sasol 2 played their second match of the league and fell short to a very strong Piet Retief team by 4 wickets. Sasol Kinross stunned Ermelo Froggs on Sunday beating them by 5 wickets in the promotion league.

All this was the yearend function’s warm up before the real match fun started with this year’s prize giving. All the players were excited to hear the whistle blow to signal the kick off to this part of the event. The best forwards, defenders and players of their respective teams were announced and they were all supported by their team mates, off the field and on, as their names were

called. Smile after smile, the gentlemen came forward to receive their trophies and get their picture taken. 2018 was a very successful year for the Sasol Rugby Club. The 2018 team of year was awarded to the Sasol Rugby Club’s 1st team and the Player’s Player of the year award was awarded to H J Neethling. Well done to each player and team and good luck to all for the 2019 season. – Ané Prinsloo

Bulletin

Annual Graceland Open Golf Championship The annual Graceland Open golf championships were held on Sunday 5 November. The Open is a competition that must be held every year so that golfers can accrue points towards their ranking for qualifying for provincial team selection. Players are urged to play as many club open competitions to accumulate as many points as possible. Forty two players entered for the competition from clubs as far away as Sabie, Volksrust and Witbank. Twenty two players from neighbouring clubs entered for the competition and twenty players of Graceland. The course was in beautiful condition with greens playing soft but as fast as 10 on the stint meter. The rough was very short and thus very forgiving. The wind, as always, was again a factor and was evident in some of the scores. The competition was played in the medal format over two rounds and each hole was played until the ball was in the cup. Tee-off started at 07:00 on both the first and tenth tee. This meant that the course was closed for social golf until after the competition was over.

Cool weather, blue skies with a fresh wind saw players with all sorts of warm clothing arriving at the course. Lots of prizes were up for grabs for best gross and nett scores for the day. A halfway meal was included in the playing fee. The results saw neighbouring club, Walker Park, walking away with most of the honours: The Graceland Champion for 2018 is Ivan Maré from Walker Park club with 142 Gross. Second was Vian Kruger from Walker Park. Third was Gerry Daniel from Walker Park. Best nett for the day was Pheello Manka from Standerton. Second was David Otto from Walker Park. Best morning field was Alex Pieterse from Volksrust. Second was Chris Mahlangu from Graceland. Best afternoon field was Francois Nel from Kranspoort. Second was Senso Shabalala from Graceland. SPCA Golf Day a huge success Winner Ivan Maree with Heinrich Britz

FLTR: Gert Prinsloo, Anli Prinsloo, Lindi van der Merwe and Lucille Lyon On Saturday morning, 3 November, the annual Bethal SPCA golf day teed off at Bethal Golf Club. As per usual the day was received well by the golfers and was enjoyed tremendously. The Bethal SPCA day, was again, graciously sponsored and catered for. The format was four ball alliance with two scores to count, American scramble, which means that four people play together and the best tee shot is used as the first shot for all four players and then they each play individually from the decided best shot. Two scores to count means that the two best scores in the four ball will be used as the score to enter on the card. On hole number 6, a par 3, the players staked a minimum of R20.00 to get on the green with their first shot.

A double or nothing was also wagered: if your first shot was on the green, you would get double your money back… No one bothered asking for their money back as they knew it was for a good cause! Like Glenn Mitton said: curiosity killed the cat, but generosity saved it! After all the golfers had returned to the clubhouse there was an American Auction arranged, a lucky draw (R20.00 to enter) and the prizegiving. The lucky draw winner, Lindi van der Merwe, won a JoJo water tank and this lucky lady was also part of the winning team! All in all it was a tremendous success for the Bethal SPCA. Sixty players were on the course on the day and this year’s winners made a whopping 112 points followed very closely by another four ball with 111 points. – Ané Prinsloo
