WEETWATERS residents fear for their lives after a woman was found with her body badly mutilated and some parts missing. Zodwa Madlala (34) from eMadwaleni died shortly on Sunday morning after she was discovered by family members metres from a relative’s house. She was last seen hours before the attack at a relative’s house where she attended the Imbeleko traditional ceremony [introduction of a new baby to the ancestors] on Saturday afternoon. Family members said they believe she was murdered for her body parts. Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, her sister Nelisiwe said the family was still shocked by the gruesome manner in which Zodwa was killed. “It is extremely painful for the family because we were with her hours just before the incident. The last time I saw her was around 10pm when we were all getting ready to leave the relative’s house, which is a walkable distance from our house. “When I left she was with a group of other relatives, who were planning to go to a tavern in the area, but none of them remember how or when she separated from the group as everyone had been drinking.” Nelisiwe said she was shocked when a relative called her on Sunday morning to say

they found her sister badly hurt. “When she didn’t return home I thought her boyfriend, who lives nearby, may have fetched her. Around 5am on Sunday I was woken up by a relative who told me Zodwa was badly hurt. “I rushed to the scene where she was found, she was still alive, but could barely utter a word. She had blood coming out of her mouth, we think her tongue was also cut out.” The victim’s left breast, genitals and other body parts were mutilated. The family said the clothes she was wearing were found next to her as she lay in agony. “How are we going to bury her without her body parts? We don’t even know what the perpetrator will use them for, but we suspect it’s muthi related. We hope the police make an arrest soon.” Nelisiwe said the family suspect she may have been raped before being mutilated and left to die. “She didn’t have any enemies. She was a reserved person who would not harm anyone. She was very giving and would sacrifice her last cent to help another.” Shocked Sweetwaters residents couldn’t believe that such a gruesome crime had taken place on their doorstep. Many pointed fingers at traditional healers who use human body parts to boost muthi. Plessislaer police spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela said on Monday that no one had been arrested in connection with the killing, but that a manhunt was under way.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Wetlands awareness project for Edendale schools

ECHO

NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com

HE Greater Edendale Mall (Gem) has injected over a R100 000 in an initiative to create awareness about the sustainability of healthy wetlands. Gem, in partnership with Liberty, a wetlands non-profit organisation, will on 2 February host 10 schools from Edendale in a bid to educate them in environmental studies through fun games and practical experiments. Gem Marketing Manager Sonya Caldecott said this event is aimed at being an educational interaction with the pupils while teaching them the importance of sustaining healthy wetlands. “One of the other reasons we are involved in this CSI project is because Greater Edendale is a catchment area for the Dusi River. This means that illegal dumping, litter, and pollution flows down to the Dusi River and we get alarming figures of E. coli contamination, which is indicative of faecal content in the water and results in severe illness including diarrhoea.” The CSI project will coincide with the World Wetlands Day celebrated annually on 2 February. Caldecott said Edendale has a total of 40 wetlands with only the one at the mall functional. “Edendale Mall is built on a wetland estate and we preserve and maintain our wetlands accordingly. We want the community at large to realise the value of wetlands and join in the campaign to rehabilitate them. “This is the way we are roping in the community to get involved in managing them and other natural resources we have in the area. We want to educate the teachers as well so they will filter this information to their

pupils. The schools we have handpicked are all around the 40 wetlands.” Other stakeholders that have partnered with Gem in the initiative include the KZN Wildlife, Ground Truth, Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), South African Environmental Obser-

vation Network (SAEON), Eco-Pulse, Institute of Natural Resources, the department of Water and Environmental Affairs and the Department of Energy. Mlungisi Ntuli of Liberty said they hosted a similar initiative last year at ZamaZulu High School in Imbali. “Many of these pupils have only

read about wetlands, we want to bring them to the mall so they see in realism what a healthy wetland looks like. The interactions between the partners and pupils will highlight among other things how wetlands have the ability to limit disasters such as floods and wildfires. There will be other fun

activities pupils will take part in, all part of teaching them how to sustain the environment.” The pupils attending will walk away with lots of awesome prizes on the day. Gem will also be donating undisclosed prize money to the best participating school.

DESPERATE woman from Johannesburg, searching for her biological mother who is said to be from Pietermaritzburg, is asking for the public’s help in reuniting them. Thandeka Ngoasheng (34) does not know her biological mother and only found out in 2000 after her adoptive father died, that she and her late sister, Lindiwe Ngoasheng, were adoptees. Ngoasheng told the Maritzburg Echo that her search for her mother has been unfruitful, but from what she knows she is Dudu Mhlongo, a former resident of Sweetwaters. “My sister and I were given away by our mother to Elsina Nomhlangano Ngoasheng with the agreement that she will raise us until our mother was back on her feet, then she will take us back. That agreement was never honoured.” Ngoasheng said it was after her adoptive father Peter Ngoasheng died and she was going through his things that she discovered letters from her biological mother. “There were about five or six letters, if not more. In the last batch of letters she became angrier demanding her children back as our adoptive parents were not responding to the letters, nor giving us back. “It was also in the letters that I discovered we were born in Pietermaritzburg and not Pretoria as we were made to believe all our lives.” She said her adoptive mother was also born in Pietermaritzburg, but relocated to Pretoria when she married. The Ngoasheng’s later move back to Pietermaritzburg in the late eighties. Ngoasheng said after she and her sister discovered the letters they confronted their adoptive mother. “We asked about the letters and told her we would like to know our mother. Her story was that she saved us from my biological mother when she was trying to drown us and that she even stabbed us with the hope of killing us because she couldn’t take care of us. “My sister and I believed that because we both have the same scars on our chest. We were never allowed to ask questions regarding the issue and if we did she would get angry.” She said upon questioning other family members they discovered their mother was in a relationship with a man named Solo Mngadi, who lived in Cramond and worked at Brett’s farm. Mngadi is suspected to have died in 1994. “Our mother was from Sweetwaters, but the letters were addressed from Richmond. We think she may have moved there after we left. When my sister died in 2002 I gave up the search and went into a deep depression and stopped the search. I recently started the search again as this time I need to uncover the truth and hopefully find out what happened to our mother,” she said. Ngoasheng said another stumbling block in her quest to find her mother is that their birth dates were given to them by their late adoptive father. “I can’t even go to the hospital and find

Weekend accidents

NE person was killed and scores injured in a spate of accidents in and around Pietermaritzburg from last Friday officials report. A man, believed to be in his forties, sustained moderate injuries last Friday afternoon when his truck jackknifed off the N3 near the Ashburton turn-off. Emergency worker and fire services arrived on the scene and found a large truck and trailer halfway down a large embankment. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered the driver seated inside the cab of the truck. “Recovery services quickly secured the vehicle, preventing further movement, while fire services carefully extricated the driver. “Once extricated, he was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries. “The man was treated for his injuries and thereafter transported to Mediclinic.” On Sunday, a woman believed to be in her thirties, was knocked over by a light motor vehicle in Church Street, and died. “When paramedics arrived they found the body of a woman lying in the middle lane of the road. A light motor vehicle was found parked in the slow lane a few metres away. Upon assessment, paramedics found that the woman had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life,” said a statement. Meiring said the woman was declared dead on the scene. An hour later emergency workers also attended another accident on the N3 near the

Paramedics discovered that 11 passengers from the taxi had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Fortunately, no one sustained any serious or fatal injuries. After the patients were treated they were transported to various hospitals in the area. The driver later told authorities that the tyre apparently blew, causing the driver to lose control and over-turn. In another taxi accident on Monday, 11 people were injured after a taxi overturned on the N3 near the Midmar Dam. Emergency workers arrived on the scene to find the taxi on its roof in the middle of the road. “Several passengers from the taxi

A car crashed into an Azalea home kitchen wall after the driver lost control.

OMEGA MOAGI AN Azalea family, enjoying a peaceful Sunday at home, were astounded when a yellow Opel Corsa smashed into their kitchen wall, causing part of their roof to cave in and shattering their windows. “We were having a quiet Sunday afternoon after church with each of us resting in our different rooms when we heard a loud bang against the kitchen wall and rushed outside to see what was going on,” said homeowner Bongiwe Zondi. Zondi said the family were shaken up and her 21-year-old daughter Bongeka was in tears. “The bang was so loud it sounded like a gun shot. Then we heard it shatter the kitchen windows so we were not sure what it was exactly, but we all got quite a fright,” said Zondi. The driver of the vehicle, Ndu Ngubane, said he lost control of the car while trying to make a turn right above the Zondi’s Unit 18 home. Eyewitnesses said the car hit the kitchen wall before landing on the ground, overturned. “The way I see it the passengers in the car were very lucky that the car was able to balance

against the house walls otherwise they could have been badly injured,” said Dumisani Zondi. The driver and his passenger sustained no major injuries as they got out the overturned vehicle and apologised to the home owners. “By the time we got out the house they [driver and passenger] were already outside the car looking fine. They apologised and even later in the afternoon the driver’s mother came by to apologise and offer to repair the damage to the house,” said Zondi. The driver and some of his relatives showed up at the Zondi house at 8am yesterday and started work to repair the damage to the home, saying everything about the crash was still a blur. “It’s all still a bit confusing,” said Ngubane. “I lost control of the car as I was turning. When I was trying to accelerate and drive off I accidentally pressed the reverse gear and next thing I knew the car just flew into the Zondi’s yard,” said Ngubane. He added that he and his passenger were later checked out at a nearby clinic where it was established they were uninjured.

Director of Mzansi Theatre Projects Ndumiso Mazibuko said they were asked to host this group, who is in the country to perform at the Fresha Festival. “This is a networking and skills development exchange programme that focuses on the development of theatre groups in KwaZulu-Natal. We are proud to be one of the community theatre groups selected to host this group from the Netherlands. “We believe the time they spend in our theatre will be beneficial to us in developing the quality of our work artistically.” Mazibuko said the purpose of hosting the Netherlands group is also to gain an audience from the show for

Tenders open to revitalise eMatsheni

The historic eMatsheni Beer Hall in the CBD is laden with hawkers.

M

SUNDUZI Municipality is inviting credible and competent developers to put forward their proposals to revitalise the eMatsheni Beer Hall precinct in the hopes that the area can be redeveloped and the high crime rate decreased. Over the past few years the eMatsheni Beer Hall precinct has become a haven of crime, filth, drugs and violence making it a hot spot for illegal activities. While the hawkers, who operate in the area, claim that the municipality has failed to provide them with any type of service delivery for over two decades, the municipality received a report in 2015 from the local SAPS stating that the precinct contributes to about 50% of crimes in the city. In December last year there was a standoff between the hawkers and business owners at eMatsheni and the SAPS with hawkers vowing to resist all attempts to evict them and shut down the area. There have been numerous SAPS raids at the beer hall over the past few years with many arrests being made. SAPS confiscated various illegal substances and saw other illegal activities taking place. Towards the latter part of 2015 there was also a gang face-off at the eMatsheni Beer Hall where over 10 gang members stormed the hall wielding knives, pangas, axes and sticks. Business owners also claimed that their businesses were suffering because of the “whoonga smokers” and squatters, who find shelter in the hall.

Among other crimes taking place there are prostitution and rape which, according to sources, take place openly in that area. While the SAPS are aware of all these crimes and illegal activities they have said their hands are tied because the property is owned by the municipality. They also said all they can do in that area is police it and encourage people to report robberies. Plans have been under way for the shutdown and revitalisation of that precinct for over a year, however, developers now have the opportunity to present their alternate proposals for the eMatsheni Beer Hall precinct. “The Msunduzi Municipality within the construct of urban planning and city place-making intends to pursue the gentrification and revitalisation of

resembles the inherent characteristics of an urban development zone. “Developers will be selected in accordance with the procedures set out in the current edition of the Msunduzi Municipality’s Supply Chain Management processes,” stated the municipality in a media release.

HE KZN Department of Health is still reeling from the bad decision taken to freeze posts. While the department is in denial over this, the reality is that red tape implemented when all posts were frozen remains in effect, with the result that the employment and placement of doctors remains problematic and in limbo. Both the provincial department and Minister Motsoaledi’s spokesperson, Joe Maila, continue to refute

the real reason doctors are sitting at home, unemployed. The reality is that every oversight visit conducted by the Democratic Alliance in 2016 has confirmed that the department remains cashstrapped and that vacancies exist. Worst affected by the situation are the patients in our province. This bureaucratic nightmare means longer queues for them as doctors who are supposed to see everyone with a smile - become increasingly

tired, frustrated and burnt-out. The end result is more rude doctors and more mistakes, both of which is also likely to push the province’s R10 billion medico-legal claim bill even higher. There is no shortage of applicant doctors in KZN - and most are prepared to work anywhere in the province. All MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo and his department have to do is make sure that employing more doctors be-

comes a priority over spending money at church events, such as the recent one in Illembe where R500 000 was spent, instead of incessantly complaining there are no funds. The DA will be asking the MEC some hard questions, as we always do. It is hoped the answers are swift and do not attempt to hide the real situation. Dr Imran Keeka, MPL DA KZN Spokesperson on Health

Death by drowning a parent’s nightmare SIMPHIWE MKHIZE A YOUNG work colleague, Minenhle Mncwango, from Jozini, lost a friend who drowned in the Msunduzi River in Pietermaritzburg recently, and broke my heart when he told me the story. I grieved as I thought of the parents, relatives, friends and associates of Mncwango’s friend whom he had asked to take care of his rented room in Edendale in the December holidays. Mncango mourned that his friend was a competent swimmer, who had visited a relative and they had gone fishing, but when this chap decided to go for a swim, he did not come back alive. I have seen documentaries that follow tales of how planes and ships have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle – a spot that is notorious for people vanishing without trace. As a parent, who has two adventurous daughters, who are passionate swimmers, I was very moved by Mncwango’s story. I remember how I became restless and worried when my

eldest daughter put a profile picture on What’sApp as she, her uncle and a group of friends paddled in a river with a strong current somewhere in the Orange Free State in the December holidays. I noticed how the tube they were paddling in capsized and they had to swim to get back to it. Of course the company that leases the tubes made them sign a form in which they had to attest that they were braving the troubled river water at their own risk. In other words, I could have lost my daughter too if she had to drown while “having fun”. My last born has been through her encounters with a Christian camp group and I was worried when she told me how they swam in a dam that I never got to see. It is difficult to be a parent because you work hard to raise your children and they can be taken away from you by accident in a twinkling of an eye. I am sure my parents felt the same each time a boy drowned in our favourite river pool at Ngquzaphola in Edendale - the same Msunduzi River that claimed

Mncwango’s friend recently. As a disabled child, I know my mother would have had an epileptic feat if she saw me swimming at Ngquzaphola (a river pool that cools bums). I actually swam with the best like the late Sipho “Qubalala” Ntombela and the deeper the river, the more comfortable I became. We had a great time at Ngquzaphola, yet that pool was notorious for drowning children and a big snake was believed to be present. I do not remember seeing a single person drowning when I was around, but I was aware of youngsters who reportedly went missing under the water at Ngquzaphola. I remember that before entering Ngquzaphola, we would throw stones in the river and make polite noises, pleading with dangerous animals that live under the water. We would shout at top of our voice: “Leave your world for now, great ones, your dogs want to come in. We will leave soon enough, there is ample time in a day.” (“Phumani Makhosi, kungene izinja zenu, sobuye sinidedele, isikhathi sisesiningi.”)

I could have easily disappeared under the water and come out dead like many of those children who enjoyed themselves in river pools, but it did not happen. Yet again, ordinary swimming pools are not safe places either because each summer holiday a parent must regret that their child left home to enjoy themselves in some pool or beach with his or her friends and drowned. I did not realise it was such a hard thing to be a parent because you never know if your child is going to come back home alive. Parents are amazing people – they put up with a lot, including worrying when their children go to have fun – something as basic as swimming in the river, dam, sea, or ordinary “safe” swimming pool. How does it feel to see your child drowning in your unprotected pool at home? I feel for the parents of Mncwango’s friend – the death of their son left a tear in my heart – one that only a caring parent can understand. • Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

Discussing a report on school infrastructure at Imvunulo Secondary School (from left) Member of the Legislature Education Portfo lio Committee Zibuse Mlaba, Msunduzi Mayor Themba Njilo and MEC Belinda Scott.

P

OLITICAL champion of uMgungundlovu District and the KZN MEC for Finance, Belinda Scott is concerned about the state of infrastructure at the three schools she visited last Wednesday at the School Opening Functionality Monitoring Programme. Scott led a delegation of provincial legislature members, mayors and staff from various government departments and municipalities at the legislature-initiated programme to three schools in Impendle. The schools visited include Luthando High, which obtained 100% matric pass rate, Siyazama Secondary, which received a 90% pass rate and Imvunulo Secondary in Vulindlela near Pietermaritzburg, which received a 74% matric pass rate. While the schools started normally with all the required educational material in place, the concern was on the state of infrastructure in all three. Common in all three schools was the dilapidated ablution facilities, vandalism of certain facilities, drugs and substance abuse as well as the inability of the schools to repair the recurring damage to their infrastructure. At Imvunulo Secondary Scott said she was concerned that these elements might disturb the process of further improving results. “As the political champion of uMgungundlovu District, I am proud to have schools that have shown improvement in their matric results, and I am particularly proud that, of the three schools we visited today, we have a school that obtained 100 percent matric pass rate. “However, I am concerned that there are elements that might disturb the process of further improving results for the current year. We have been told about vandalism of school property, the use of drugs in schools, a lack of proper maintenance of school infrastructure as well as a lack of involvement by some sections of certain relevant departments to ensure that schools function optimally.” Scott said the success of the schooling system requires active involvement of the community, school governing bodies, municipalities and relevant government departments. “We also need to see schools represented in the war rooms and this is one of the speedy ways they can get their challenges addressed,” said Scott. Member of the legislature’s education portfolio committee, Zibuse Mlaba said the programme is meant to ensure that schools run normally and teaching takes place from the first day, that challenges are addressed collectively and that results improve. uMgungundlovu District Municipality mayor, Thobekile Maphumulo, said that despite the good results that they appreciate, they are ready to galvanise support for the schools visited so that their various challenges reported can be addressed speedily. - Supplied

‘We always remember Cele’ uesday marked the one-year anniversary of Mondli Cele’s death, but according to Maritzburg United captain Kurt Lentjies, the players honour the midfielder before every game. The Team of Choice gathered at the scene of the accident that claimed the life of the Bafana Bafana call-up, and also that of young SABC journalist Delisile Ngwenya in Park Drive near the Pietermaritzburg Oval last year. “It’s a sad moment for us, and it’s a year later. But we’re grateful to God for carrying us through this year. We just came here to pay respect to Mondli, and of course his family. And the prayer, of course, was always directed towards the family, for them to grow in strength,” Lentjies said. “What we have to do is take this to the field. We remember Mondli before every game. close to calling Cele up for the national team. United struggled to come to terms with the death of a crucial player, and their results suffered so much that it was thought it would take a miracle for them to survive relegation. However, they were able to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the final two games, winning against Ajax Cape Town and fellow strugglers Jomo Cosmos to save their top flight status. Cele’s death came months after that of Ajax Cape Town defender Cecil Lolo, who was killed in an accident in Khayelitsha in October 2015. Former Bafana Bafana and Golden Arrows striker Richard Henyekane was also killed in a car accident just less than a year before that. The Witness quoted United chairperson Farook Kadodia appealing to players to have safety on their minds whenever they were on the road. United, under new head coach Roger de Sa, are preparing themselves for the second half of the season, and their first assignment will be a trip to Limpopo to take on Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in three weeks. They follow that up with a game at home against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs days after that.
