MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! OUTH African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has warned state pensioners about insurance brokers claiming to be working in partnership with Sassa. The brokers sell insurance products, funeral plans and financial plans to pensioners saying they are in partnership with Sassa, and that it’s mandatory they join them. Sassa national spokesperson Kgomoco Diseko has refuted a partnership with any funeral in-

surance company. “Sassa has no relationship with any funeral insurance company and does not endorse funeral schemes,” he said. Pensioners should ask whoever claims to have an agreement with Sassa to show them a copy of the agreement. “We never contract with funeral insurance providers,” he said. In a local recent case children of a pensioner complained that a few months before their mother died they saw a deduction on her pension allegedly for a funeral plan she had joined. When their mother died they fol-

lowed up on the code the deduction was going off under and found that the mother had a policy with an insurance company and someone had already claimed the money. Fever then investigated and phoned the company to ask if they were underwritten or authorised by Sassa to make the deductions. In a telephone conversation a sales manager from the company said they are working in partnership with Sassa, however, she couldn’t say whether the pensioner had give them permission to deduct money.

Diseko also said that social grant beneficiaries should not be forced to sign funeral scheme contracts, “If there is an incident whereby a broker or sales agent forces the beneficiary to sign an agreement for a policy, they should report such incidents to Sassa or the police.” He said beneficiaries shouldn’t believe anyone who visit their home claiming to be from Sassa because Sassa officials won’t visit them without their request. “They should never disclose their ID number or PIN number to strangers,” he said.

VEHICLE transporting a large amount of dagga was intercepted by police in Port Shepstone on Saturday morning. The car with four occupants is believed to have been on its way to Durban from the Eastern Cape. Police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid said that morning members from the Port Shepstone

10111 call centre response unit, assisted Warrant Officer Abraham Sonnekus from the Organised Crime Unit in Port Shepstone to make the arrests. “The officers were joined by two people from a local security company as well as members from the Port Shepstone K9 unit who stopped the vehicle on the R102 in Port Shepstone. “Four occupants, three females and one male, all in their thirties, were arrested as the vehicle was loaded with numerous parcels containing dagga,” said Wiid. She said the dagga weighed 144kg with a street value of R400 000. The suspects appeared in Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing a charge of dealing in dagga. Wiid said the case was remanded to 24 January for a bail hearing. Port Shepstone SAPS station commander Brigadier Sandra Nala commended the members for making the arrest and recovering the drugs.

Shallow grave identified, two arrested TWO brothers, aged 24 and 27, could face charges of murder, house robbery and theft after they pointed out a shallow grave with human remains to police on Monday. The arrests come following the investigation into the disappearance of a person from Paddock, who was reported missing in November last year. Captain Jacques Buys from the Ugu cluster detectives and

the investigating officer from Paddock, Detective Sergeant Mzwandile Mchunu followed up on leads, which led to the arrest of the two men in Paddock. Various stolen items were also recovered and handed in as exhibits. “A shallow grave was then pointed out to police where the decomposed remains of a human were buried, also in the Paddock area,” said police

spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. “A post-mortem and DNA test will confirm whether the remains are that of 66-yearold Michael Andrews, who was last seen on 24 November 2016 and reported missing.” The men appeared in court yesterday, but the outcome was unavailable at the time of going to print. - Supplied.

Attacked constable ‘not so innocent’ claims PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com FEVER 6 January ran a story, titled “Policeman critical after attack” about a constable who was reportedly “attacked and beaten” by a group of men in a tavern two Sunday mornings ago.

Now with lots of allegations going around in Gamalakhe, a member of the community, who witnesses the incident and who prefers not to be named, alleges that Constable Manqoba Zulu, the victim, is not innocent. The witness alleged the constable got into an argument and blew the

situation out of proportion when he fired shots at the men with his state firearm. He alleges there was no reason for him to do this because the men were trying to control him as he was under the influence of alcohol and getting rowdy and out of hand.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said he cannot confirm the allegations as investigations are still under way. Mfeka said the arrested suspect, Mpume Mbono (36), appeared in court last Wednesday and his case was remanded to Thursday 19 January for a bail application. Mbono is remains in custody and no other arrests have been made so far.

CRIME in the Uvongo area appears to have “stabilised to some extent”. A recent community policing meet ing revealed that incidents have been below average for the past couple of months. “Although we have experienced some housebreak incidents, the num ber of incidents during both November and December were more than 50% lower when compared to the 2015 figures,” said chairman Ernest Booysen. Booysen said the stabilisation in seasonal crime can be attributed to pa trols conducted by SAPS and Block watch members and quick response to incidents reported. “Very few daytime incidents were re ported. “Our light fingered friends mainly operate at night. “A number of positive arrests had al so ensured that the scum had been re moved from our streets,” he said. He thanked all parties involved for their effort.

Warning con men ‘managers’, steal money, valuables POLICE have issued a warning to the public, especially business owners in the Port Shepstone CBD to be aware of peo ple pretending to be managers or ten derers. The con men then gain access to buildings, especially municipal buildings to steal cellphones and laptops from open and unmanned offices. The public have been duped into leaving valuable items with these con men, who send the unsuspecting person into the store with a message, using a staff member’s name, claiming to know them. “A young man lost all his valuables, including his school fees this way,” said police spokesperson LieutenantColo nel Zandra Wiid. “The public is warned not to be too trusting, to be aware of their surround ings and never to leave any items with anyone,” she added. She added that SAPS will arrest and charge anyone purchasing suspected stolen property. Although registration for 2017 closed in October 2016, parents still arrived with their children on the first day of school, hoping they would be placed in the learning programme. G. Moodley, Marburg Primary deputy principal, said the main contribut-

ing factor to this issue is relocation. “Parents decide to move their children from one area to another after registration has closed and a few simply procrastinate,” he said. Moodley added that they have assisted some parents by placing their children in classes, however, there are still a large number of children on a waiting list. Jai Hind Primary principal, P. Dhanraj said the school could no longer accommodate Grade 1 pupils as classes were filled to capacity. “We don’t have the facilities to accommodate any more children in

these classes. Desks and chairs are limited. If we admit any more children the quality of education drops,” he said. Dhanraj added that parents needed to be pro-active and make the arrangements for their children to attend school when registration opens. I. Nair, Merlewood Secondary, deputy principal, said the school had accepted many pupils since opening. “The few that could not be taken were put on a list so the department can help them find a place. Our numbers in Grades 8 and 9 are well above

TOURISM like many aspects of our lives is prone to both gradual and episodic change and the recent disconcerting, unexpected and disruptive water issue is no exception. The fallout of this has wobbled the tourism boat and has also frustrated a number of the broader resident and business communities. We, as an organisation, recognise this and see ourselves as a provider of constructive input that will be needed by the authorities to avoid a

speeding ticket recorded by that specific camera, yet we all know about that camera and drive past there at reduced speed prompting “foreign” motorists to overtake at the worst possible place. Discussions with a tourist gave the same impression, with the only difference being they were fined R300, while us locals are getting fines of R150. Fortunately, the driver with the tracking device will not accept it, but will challenge the speeding fine. Hopefully those who have a tracking or similar device installed will also take it up with the authorities so that the milking of the motorist by that faulty speed control device can be stopped. It seems to be almost impossible for a normal motorist to challenge those faulty speeding tickets, yet something has to hap pen, because it should not be allowed to continue. Norbert Gintner

FURTHER to my recent letter, which pro voked a lot of reactions by motorists, who had received speeding fines, knowing they were not exceeding 80km/h because we all know about the little grey camera opposite Bucks farm stall, I had an interesting discus sion with a driver who had a tracking device installed. This driver, who recently also received a speeding fine of 97km/h, which incidentally seems to be the standard speed most of us are accused of, was checking their tracking device records and it came to light that the actual speed was 82km/h and not 97km/h. One can almost come to the conclusion that the faulty reading by that speed con trol camera is around 15km/h, thus adding 15km/h by default to the actual speed driv en by a motorist. From many discussions with local driv ers it can be said that so far I could not find a single person, who had not received a

Omdat kollegas en kennisse wat nie naby die strande was nie, ook siek geword het, het die uwe gaan oplees oor Eschericia coli, oftewel E. coli-virus,

ITH construction of the new Merlewood Primary School continuing, pupils have settled in the new temporary mobile classrooms and learning is continuing as normal. Principal Audrey Ryan said the first phase, consisting of five foundation classes and a renovated school hall, is at an advanced stage and the second phase has also started. “Heavy rains in the past few months have contributed to a slight delay. A handover of phase one is expected to be at the end of term one,” said Ryan. Ryan said it is full steam ahead for the pupils and teachers. “In the first week of school, there were a few tearful moments from Grade 1 pupils and parents.

Dux Zizipho Msebenzi achieved seven As and an award for excelling in the 2016 De Beers English Olympiad. She made history at the school for being the first pupil to obtain seven As in matric. Deputy principal Indhira Nair said teachers were very proud of the pupils for their hard work and encouraged them to maintain this standard through the rest of their schooling career.
