A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who 1 X 750 ml are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the6

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. 1 x 750ml After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by Xa 250 ml African. South

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli 1 x 750ml 1 X 750 ml ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

ANC and alliance partners call for unity and xenophobia. He urged the party’s branches on farms to launch campaigns opposed to the discrimination of farm workers. He said the party should produce decisive resolutions on economic transformation at its upcoming national policy conference. “The ANC’s 2014 manifesto stated that at least 70% of all goods purchased by the government must be purchased from co-operatives and SMMEs. “So we are saying to the government at the municipal level, its various departments and at the national level, the ANC’s government must ensure that all goods it purchases are purchased from black-owned businesses. “As of February this year, we as the provincial government will launch a programme of radical agrarian socioeconomic transformation that will benefit the many businesses we will purchase from,” Zikalala said. He said the province should aim to get above 70% matric pass rate this year. “History informs us that the best gift we can bestow on Oliver Tambo as a way of paying homage to his legacy is to allow women to lead the congress because the time is ripe for them to do so. “They must be given the opportuni-

ty to lead because we all agree that they [women] were oppressed, we agree they were not afforded their rightful place, but congress fought so that women could be incapacitated. “Women have all the leadership qualities that are required, why then do we seem to be reluctant when it comes to making women our leaders? “We must support them and we must be behind them, but the name of a specific female candidate will only emerge once we officially start our discussions on the leadership succession issue,” ANC Greater Kwa-Dukuza Region chairperson Ricardo Mthembu said regarding the leadership suc-

cession issue. The KZN ANC Women’s League secretary Nonhlanhla Khoza said the league agrees with Mthembu that women are ready to take up leadership positions in the party.

THE ANC held its 105th anniversary celebrations at the KwaDukuza Recreational Grounds on Sunday. The event was attended by the party’s national, provincial and regional leadership as well as thousands of party members, supporters and followers from throughout the province. President Jacob Zuma made an unexpected appearance there. KZN ANC chairperson Sihle Zikalala delivered the keynote address in which he called for unity within the party, the accelerated expropriation of land, the growth of black industrialists and the revitalisation of the township economy, among other things. “The task of cementing unity within the ANC and unity among our people is more important and urgent than ever before least we become another failed revolution,” Zikalala said. He said the party’s policy conference is scheduled for June and its 54th national conference in December will afford the organisation the opportunity to assess its progress in developing the lives of South Africans, and that these conferences will be an opportunity for the party to discuss and plan for future development initiatives. “We have to be cognisant of the fact that ANC conferences are not about who we are going to elect, they are about answering this question - where are we taking Shop 1, 1 Hullets Street, Opposite OK Mall, Stanger the struggle of the TEL: 032 551 1428 • CELL: 083 312 3561 people?” he said. ANC Youth League demands removal of education director 4

WEEKLY

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

T

HE ANC Youth League in the Greater KwaDukuza region took to the streets on the first day of school this year in a peaceful march demanding that iLembe District Director for the Department of Education, Thembi Vilakazi, be removed from her position with immediate effect due to the decline in the matric pass rate since 2014. “The ANCYL has noted the [decline] in the matric results from 72.4% in 2014, again we suf-

fered a huge blow in 2015 by decreasing to 59.2% and in the same trend from bad to worse we dwindled to 52.42%. “The matric results statistics attests and vindicate the ANCYL that the district director is incompetent,” reads the league’s memorandum that was handed to a Department of Education representative. The memo also stated that schools that did not perform well be assessed immediately and incompetent school principals be removed. All schools must be provided with quality food and the termination of contracts for suppliers who send rotten meals to schools. Also that textbooks must be delivered to all schools by the end of January. “We would like to caution relevant stakeholders in this regard that should it occur that our demands are not met we are going to wage

a relentless fight until all of these are acceded to,” reads the memorandum. KZN ANC Youth League Deputy Chairperson Kwazi Shengu said as the youth they believe that building a prosperous nation would continue to be a challenge if leadership positions within the Department of Education are held by those who gamble with the future of young people. “We believe that Thembi Vilakazi is one of those people who gamble with our future. No one else will fight for us because the future belongs to us,” he said.

He said KZN MEC for Education Mthandeni Dlungwana committed to removing individuals in leadership positions in the department who do not perform well. “So we are saying he [Mthandeni Dlungwana] should not look too far, but should start here [in the iLembe District] because we have identified one such leader who does not perform well. “The removal of Thembi Vilakazi as a district director would be a victory for young people,” he said. He said young people must demand that there shouldn’t be any individual in a leadership position who is content to receive a salary every month and be satisfied with the fact that their children attend private schools while the situation in the public schools they manage is far from satisfactory. “That is why as the province of KwaZuluNatal we are saying the removal of Thembi Vilakazi must be done with immediate effect. “This struggle will not end here today, as a province we will continue to engage with the leadership of the department of education and we will talk with comrade Mthandeni Dlungwana as a former leader of the ANC Youth League because he is one with us in this struggle to improve our education so we believe he will listen to us,” Mshengu said. KZN Cosas secretary Mandisa Dlamini said Cosas was part of the march to express their view that they are unhappy with the decline of the matric pass rate. “We are saying to Vilakazi she must leave her position and allow another individual, who has the ability to improve this district’s pass rate, to take over,” she said. She said Vilakazi’s successor would have to ensure that all schools have quality education, that teachers are suitably qualified and ensure that all pupils have textbooks. Dlamini said Cosas has communicated with pupils from the three schools in the iLembe District that obtained a zero percent pass rate and that those pupils complained that their teachers are not qualified for the subjects which they teach. Responding to a question about whether Cosas was not concerned about pupils being taken out of class for the march on the first day of school, she said: “It does not worry us because once she [Vilakazi] has been removed and we see an improvement in our education we will be pleased because it is of no use for us as school pupils to remain silent about this when we are the ones who are affected.”

“The suspect in this matter is still at large and the police are tracking him. An arrest is imminent,” she said. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the suspect is wanted in connection with a case of business robbery after a victim was held up earlier this month by two suspects who took cash and cell phones. He said the suspects had entered the victim’s shop pretending to be customers. “A case of murder and attempted murder was opened at Nyoni police station after two people were shot. “A woman died at the scene and the second victim sustained gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made,” Zwane said.

WEEKLY

Mandeni Mayor con gratulates Perm Mthethwa and her parent for Perm’s oustanding matric re sults.

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

M

ANDENI Mayor Sphesihle Basil Zulu visited the area’s matric top achievers of the class of 2016 on Saturday, 14 January to congratulate them. The top two achievers are Joshua Pillay who completed his Grade 12 at the Mandeni Academy and Perm Mthethwa who matriculated from uThukela High School. Perm obtained seven distinctions. “I would like to congratulate both pupils for hoisting the iLembe flag and putting Mandeni on the map,” the mayor said. Zulu said hard work pays off and that every pupil can achieve what these two achieved if they focus more on their studies. “Some of the pupils are focusing on socially unwanted practices and in some instances, you might find that the pupils is busy with boys or girls at school instead of working hard to achieve better results. Some are busy

taking drugs and this is something that hinders the pupil’s progress at school,” he said. Zulu offered a word of advice to the two top achievers and cautioned them about the traps they could fall into once living in a tertiary institution without the guidance offered by their parents. Joshua’s father Mark Pillay said he is hopeful that his son will continue to do well at tertiary level.

Perm’s mother Olga Yeyeni said she is proud of her daughter. “I am thankful for my daughter’s progress, we had sleepless nights because of group studies that Perm used to have with other pupils here at home and her progress did not come out of nothing, but it is because of the hard work she did,” she said. Perm will study agricultural science in UKZN in Pietermaritzburg and Joshua will study physics at Wits University.

A tribute to my wife PREMIELA Singh (aka Premie) was born in Stanger to the late Mr and Mrs Ramsumer Singh and was the youngest of the four siblings. At a young age she took a keen interest in religion and culture. During her schooling career she was interested in gymnastics and rep-

resented Stanger Manor Secondary School in the Natal championships where she was placed fourth in Natal. After matriculating in 1986 from Stanger Manor Secondary she began her career as a sales assistant. In 1993 she met Pranil Singh from Newcastle who became her life partner. The following year they married and Newcastle became her new home. Premie spent many years at home raising her daughter Leesha into a fine young teenager. Her passion and desire of studying Riekie - crystal healing - and running her own business then materialised.

In 2009 she established her business, Newcastle Spice and Gift Centre. She managed her business until 2012, however, when she was diagnosed with cancer she gave up her business and during this period spent most of her time undergoing treatment in Durban. She was a very positive lady, a fighter and she challenged her illness and fought the battle until she was called to rest on the 11 January 2016. Her death has left a void in the community of Newcastle, Durban and Stanger. She touched the hearts of many

people, always had a smile on her face and a caring nature. Thanks to the wonderful family he married into, Leesha and Pranil have had unwavering support in their time of bereavement. Premie leaves behind her husband Pranil, daughter Leesha, siblings Daynand, Shirley and Rabin and a host of family and friends. In honour of his wife, Pranil would

The new Volvo S90.

WEEKLY

weeklywheels Volvo Cars break sales records in 2016

V

OLVO Cars has reported a third con secutive year of record sales for 2016, increasing 6.2 per cent compared to 2015 to 534 332 cars – underlining the breadth and depth of the company’s ongo ing global transformation. The recordbreaking year of 2016 was driven by solid growth in all major sales re gions, including doubledigit increases in its two largest markets (China and the United States) and a strong performance in West ern Europe. Looking ahead, Volvo is confi dent that 2017 will be another record year for sales. Sales of the new topoftheline 90 se ries cars were the main growth drivers glo bally, led by the Volvo XC90 large premium SUV for which sales rose 125 per cent versus 2015, highlighting the success of the com pany’s new design and engineering direc tion and boding well for the future as more new models are revealed in the coming years. Meanwhile, the evergreen XC60 mid size premium SUV established another new annual sales record of 161 092 cars in its ninth year on the market, having increased sales every year since it was introduced in 2008. Volvo’s largest market in 2016 was Chi na, with total sales of 90 930 cars, an in

crease of 11.5 per cent. The bestselling models in the world’s largest car market were the locallyproduced Volvo XC60 and S60L premium sedan. In the United States, Volvo gained mar ket share in 2016 with growth of 18.1 per cent, making it one of the fastestgrowing premium brands in a broadly flat market. Total sales for the year amounted to 82 726 cars, with the Volvo XC90 and XC60 leading sales performances. Sales in Western Europe increased 4.1 per cent, boosted by strong performances in key markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Italy. Total sales in the region amounted to 206 144 cars. The new sales record in 2016 tops off an other year in which Volvo Cars continued its global transformation and the reposition ing of the brand to compete with its global premium rivals. During the course of the year, the com pany strengthened its leadership in areas such as autonomous drive (AD), electrifica tion and safety, forged new business allian ces, continued the renewal of its entire product range and expanded its global manufacturing footprint. In 2016 Volvo continued construction work on a new USD500m manufacturing plant in South Carolina, its first in the United

States. The plant will build new cars based on its modular Scalable Product Architec ture (SPA) and will initially employ up to 2 000 people. The new plant in South Caro lina underlines Volvo’s longterm and strong commitment to the United States. Volvo Cars also unveiled a new manu facturing strategy for China in which pro duction capacity will be increased and Chi na will be developed into a global manufac turing export hub. Its topoftherange S90 models will be built in Daqing in northern China, while existing and future 60series cars will be built in Chengdu. Cars in its planned new 40series, based on its Com pact Modular Architecture (CMA), will be built at a plant under construction in Luqi ao, 350 km south of Shanghai. With the introduction of the V90 Cross Country premium estate in September 2016, Volvo completed the launch of a com pletely new 90 series lineup. These new cars have highlighted the transformational effect of the SPA platform in terms of de sign, technology and brand, a feat under lined by the over 120 awards won by the XC90 SUV. In the coming years, Volvo Cars will con tinue to replace its entire model range. Dur ing the course of 2017, it will launch a com pletely new version of the successful XC60 midsize SUV based on the SPA architec

ture, as well as the new XC40 compact SUV, the first in an allnew range of 40series cars based on the CMA platform that underpins its global small car strategy. Volvo Cars also last year announced one of the auto industry’s most comprehensive electrification strategies in which plugin hybrids will be introduced across its entire range. It will also introduce its first fully electric car by 2019. By 2025, Volvo aims to have sold a total of up to 1 million electrified cars. New partnerships forged during 2016 al so place Volvo Cars at the forefront of the significant change currently underway in the auto industry. Volvo Cars and Uber agreed to set up and finance a joint development project that will develop and manufacture base ve hicles on the SPA architecture, able to incor porate the latest AD technologies up to and

including fully autonomous cars. It also established a joint venture with Autoliv, named Zenuity, to design and de velop AD software and advanced driver as sist systems (ADAS) for sales to third party OEMs. Zenuity will be a new entrant in the fastgrowing global market for autono mous driving software systems and marks the first time a leading premium car maker has joined forces with a tier one supplier to develop these systems. Volvo Cars will in 2017 start the world’s most advanced and ambitious autono mous vehicle experiment in Gothenburg, with real families using AD XC90 cars in ev eryday life, paving the way for it to be a glob al leader in autonomous driving technolo gies. It will start similar tests with real peo ple behind the wheel of its selfdriving cars in London and China in the coming years as well. As a result of these and other partner ships that are transforming its business model, Volvo Cars is no longer just a car maker, it is now a global premium mobility company. Globally, the Volvo XC60 was the best selling model in 2016 with 161 092 cars sold (2015: 159 617), followed by the Volvo V40/ V40 Cross Country with 101 380 cars sold (106 631). The XC90 was third with 91 522 cars sold (40 621). Supplied.
