A First Time for Everything
ummertime produces amazing family firsts—we watch our kids marvel in their first trips to the beach, laugh when they watch fireworks up close for the first time (pictured above; still can’t believe we got this picture!) and revel in their first times heading off to camp. We’ll remember good times taking the kids to get ice cream, heading out on family trips to zoos and county fairs, and exploring the outdoors. We celebrate those summer memories in this issue with Katie Riley’s fun piece on page 32 about classic summer foods, in which you’ll find great places for hot dogs, milkshakes and crab feasts. We’ve also got a home run this year, as this year’s Major League Baseball’s All-Star game is in D.C. (see page 7), and brings with it a week of fun for the whole family that celebrates America’s favorite pastime. In addition, we take a trip to Ocean City, though we highlight fun for rainy (or ridiculously hot) days when you need some indoor activities to keep the vacation going strong.
If you’re staying put this summer—or if your kids are driving you nuts asking for screen time on the go—check out our ideas for productive time with screens on page 8. And if you really need a break from it all, head to page 40 for some creative date nights for yourselves. Finally, whatever your summer brings, we’ve got you covered with your favorite doctors in the area on page 18. There you can find your fellow readers’ picks for the best in the business in everything from pediatrics to women’s’ health and beyond. Though we hope your summer will not require any major attention from said providers. Have a happy, safe and healthy summer full of fun family memories and firsts!

Use Your Screen Time for Good
T
he idea of a screen-free summer is attainable for some, laughable for many. If that idea seems completely out of reach for your family, why not use the screens’ power for good? When you’ve got a rainy day on the horizon, or you need a fun indoor activity after a full day at the pool or beach, here are some cool ideas that will get your kids to use screens in a creative, productive way.
Make a Movie
• Lego/Klutz Make Your Own Movie book— This 80-page book provides a fun introduction to making stop-motion movies. In addition to coming complete with Lego mini-figs and props, it gives tips for setting up your scenes, lighting, time-lapse Lego builds, and a good old-fashioned bananaslip gag.

Bookend your Summer
• Let your kids take pictures when you’re out and about, then make a summer photo book on shutterfly.com or other photo site. • If you’ve got a creative writer on your hands, encourage them to write a story, then use storyjumper.com to illustrate it and make it come to life by adding your voice, sound effects and music.

Rainy Fun Down the Ocean
I
f your family is headed to Ocean City this summer, obviously you are hoping for some sunshine. But what do you do if the weather is just too hot or it is raining? Good news, there are lots of options to keep everyone entertained and chill . . . here are some of our favorites.
DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum at Sea Shell City 708 Coastal Hwy, Fenwick Island discoversea.com
Arrrggg . . . here marks the spot for nautical history buffs! The DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum lies just outside of Ocean City on Fenwick Island, and is a treasure for the entire family to enjoy—and it’s free! Located above Sea Shell City on Coastal Highway, the museum offers an ever-changing exhibit of shipwreck artifacts recovered from the Delmarva Peninsula and beyond. On display you can find gold and silver bars, coins, daggers and firearms, pottery and china, and anything else that may have gone down with the ship. At any given time you can find about 10,000 artifacts from between 1541 and 1860 on display.

Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum 813 S. Atlantic Ave., Ocean City ocmuseum.org
The original Ocean City Life-Saving Station was built in the late 1800s. As the beach town grew, the station was relocated several times and eventually renamed the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. Today its mission is to save history instead of shipwrecked mariners, as the original ”Surfmen” of the station had done. Located at the southern end of the Ocean City Boardwalk, the museum has plenty of exhibits for kids of all ages, including two 250-gallon saltwater aquariums, the “Sands From Around the World” exhibit, and the “Davy Jones’ Lockers” exhibit featuring unusual objects recovered from local shipwrecks. Salisbury Zoological Park
Ripley’s Believe It Or Not
A half-hour outside Ocean City is a 12-acre zoo that is not to be missed. Founded in 1954, the Salisbury Zoological Park is home to species both native to Maryland and beyond—from buffalo to otters, macaws and macaques, to wallabies and ocelots and everything in between. Conservation is at the core of the zoo’s purpose and in late 2017 the zoo acquired Pinocchio, the Andean Bear from Ecuador. Keepers are hoping that he will make his acquaintance with Chaska, the zoo’s four-year-old female Andean Bear. Reproduction is key to preserving this species, the only bear native to South America. The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The zoo’s trails and walkways are stroller-friendly and are primarily in the shade.
It is nearly impossible to miss the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not in Ocean City—just look for the giant great white shark thrashing his way through the corner building near Wicomico Street. That is one huge animatronic! A fixture for decades, the museum just reopened this past spring after renovations and is ready to amaze your family with everything from shrunken heads to visual illusions. Housing over 500 artifacts and displays on two-floors, as each Ripley’s museum is unique—even if you have visited one in another town, you will experience new thrills in this one. The museum is also home to Ripley’s Marvelous Mirror Maze and Ripley’s Impossible LaseRace. —Joyce Heid

The USNA’s Junior Leadership Program is aimed at students ages 13 to 15 who are interested in attending the Academy or pursuing a military career. Participants are offered an exclusive customized tour around the Academy grounds, admission information, and a presentation given by Navy and Marine Corps officers. The participants will also view the film “The Call to Serve,” and at the end of each session, have the option to remain on the grounds and attend a briefing in the Visitor Center. Finally, participants can learn about the Academy’s history and explore world-renowned the model ships and
naval history exhibits at the U.S. Naval Academy museum, located on the Academy grounds. The Junior Leadership program runs two sessions, the first on Saturday, July 21, and the second on Saturday, August 4. The cost for the program is $55 and runs from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. both dates. Participants of the program will receive a Junior Leadership Program Naval Academy cap, an academy water bottle, lanyard, and an information packet. “I won’t say these things don’t exist,” she says, noting that the department might not hear about some instances. “But I will say it’s rare that kids are actually acting on these challenges. And, [the popularity] is usually brief.” Dr. Jacqueline Dougé, child health medical director at the Howard County Health Department, echoed that assessment. “I’m not aware of these being a major concern in Howard County,” she says. “That’s not to say this doesn’t occur, we just haven’t heard of it.” Similarly, Calvert County health officials say that their Behavioral Health Division’s prevention unit gathers information about risky behaviors and has therapists in all of the schools, but these crazes have not popped up on their radar screen. “We are not hearing about any of these behaviors occurring,” according to Doris McDonald, Calvert County’s director of behavioral health. From available evidence, the local scene mirrors the national scene where these teen fads are concerned. Snopes.com, the factchecking website, investigated the condomsnorting “craze” and, in an April 2018 posting, declared it “mostly false.” While reliable local statistics on these fads are impossible to come by, the American Association of Poison Control Centers does keep national figures on some of them.

Adolescent challenges have been around for a very long time.
While reports of full-blown crazes are almost unanimously pooh-poohed by local health experts, those same experts agree that parents should discuss the online challenges with their teens. “I think most kids don’t do these things, but you don’t know unless you ask,” Howard County’s Dougé says. “This is an opportunity to talk to kids about what they know, and then talk about ways to mitigate and prevent their exposure to those things.” The challenges also offer an opportunity to delve into your child’s social media life.

hen we look for a health care provider, regardless
of the type of care we need, we all look for the same attributes: someone who is knowledgeable, caring, patient and attentive. And for this year’s Favorite Doctors, our readers shared stories of the great practitioners that they’ve found, and nominated them in droves. We received hundreds of nominations for dentists, pediatricians, surgeons, therapists and Ob/Gyns, and you took the time to comment on what makes them great providers. It’s easy to tell someone’s enthusiasm for a doctor when they leave comments like this: “He is amazing, never misses anything and always gives it to us straight. He also helps keep me from being a “crazy” mom and has talked me out of many unnecessary trends.” Another commenter gave this compliment of a pediatrician, “[he is] gifted with children and takes care of the nervous parent at the same time." We hope this honest feedback from our readers, who might just be your friend or neighbor, will help you find new providers who are good listeners, patient and caring. Chesapeake Pediatric Dental Group was formed in 2005 to help deliver high- quality, accessible dental care to the children of greater Baltimore. Since opening our doors almost 10 years ago, we have consistently been named “Top Pediatric Dentist” by Baltimore magazine. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend that children have their first dental visit no later than age 1. Many parents ask, why kids need to be seen so early, and we always respond with one word: Prevention. It is important at these early, initial visits to talk about diet, hygiene, and what to expect in the future with development
of teeth. By creating good habits and creating a “dental home” for a child we can prevent decay from starting at an early age, and create a future of no cavities and great dental visits. Our doctors are all board-certified/ board-eligible in pediatric dentistry, are on staff at Franklin Square Medical Center, and are clinical instructors at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. We are located in Perry Hall (North of IKEA) and Arundel Mills (across from the Mall) and now Abington/Bel Air area.
In 1990, the moment Collins, Bross, and Associates opened its doors, it was their dream to be an elite practice. “Quality care and technology are a given,” says Dr. Tyson Bross. “Our most unique feature is the way our dentistry is delivered. We strive to create a warm, nurturing, and fun environment around the child and family.” We provide regular hygiene care to more extensive needs requiring sedation in the office or at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Preventive dentistry is our primary focus. We follow the guidelines of the American Academy of pediatric dentistry and are well prepared to see children at age 1.
Multiple specialists allow us to provide timely care to all our patients. Dr. Collins, Bross & Associates has served the community for 28 years. The practice has been featured in Baltimore magazine, What’s Up Annapolis, and the Washingtonian magazine as one of the area’s “Best Pediatric Dentists.”
Kent Island Pediatric Dentistry provides dental care for all children ages 0-18 years. Drs. Margaret McGrath, Karen Benitez and Stella Chukwu are board certified/ eligible pediatric dentists that have specialized training in all aspects of pediatric dentistry including sedation and hospital dentistry. We have a beautiful and modern office located in Stevensville, plus a super friendly and helpful staff. We are always welcoming new patients and want both children and their parents to have a happy and positive
experience! Please visit our website for more information or feel free to call us! We are always happy to answer any questions and look forward to meeting you.

Ann’s Dari Crème has been serving crunchy deep-fried hot dogs and creamy soft serve ice cream since 1950. “A footlong and one of our shakes is the perfect summer meal,” says Lombard. Summertime is as much about the food as it is sunbathing and swimming. A recent survey by Zagat found that American’s favorite summertime foods are hamburgers and hot dogs, followed closely by ice cream. 5 Creative Summer Dates Get out of the dinner-and-amovie date-night rut.
T
he key to a happy, long-lasting relationship, according to numerous studies and psychologists, lies in one word: dates. Professionals say the best way to bond is through shared experiences and spending time together, and suggest that
you and your partner go on a date weekly. While that might seem overwhelming, don’t feel daunted. The most important aspect of a date is just being together. According to the National Marriage Project conducted by the University of Virginia, husbands who reported spending quality time with their spouse at least once a week were 2.5 times more likely to stay together. “Date night is an opportunity to connect and get to know each other’s hearts during enjoyable activity away from it all, where bonding can occur,” says Carol Corcoran, Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist in Severna Park.
