Creating Explorers
One of the best things we can do for our kids is to give them the time and space to explore. Yes, they need some parameters for safety's sake, but they also need the chance to try new things and make mistakes. It’s much better to have them make mistakes when they are still at home or nearby, and you are available.
Summer camp allows kids to play, experiment with a new sport or activity, and meet new friends. This issue includes our camp guide for preschoolers and for older kids. We couldn’t print all of the camps, but online, you can find more camps, over 300 of them. You can sort by age, location, and type of camp. Use it to find a program that your child will enjoy because that
is what summer is all about for kids - to have fun.
We are very lucky to live close to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater. World-class scientists work there and share their research and study methods with the public. Read more about visiting SERC in our article by Nancy Parode. Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and Maryland Day are all in March. You’ll have a hard time

Welcoming Connie Coker:
New Head of School at St. Anne’s School of Annapolis
St. Anne’s School of Annapolis officially installed Connie Coker as Head of School in a special, community-wide ceremony held at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Coker is St. Anne’s School’s Fourth Head of School since its founding in 1994.
“St. Anne’s School is celebrating its 30th year, and because of that, the School’s roots in the Episcopal tradition, and the overall excitement regarding Mrs. Coker’s new headship, the Board wanted to hold an event that truly captured this moment in history for our School,” said Shani Bagley, Board Member and Installation Committee Chair. “Lifting up Mrs. Coker while also uniting our entire community in celebration and prayer was wonderful. It was such a special night for our special school.”
Mrs. Coker began working in St. Anne’s School’s administration in 2019, and prior to being named Head of School, she served as the Associate Head of School for 3 years. St. Anne’s School’s Board of Trustees selected Mrs. Coker
in August 2023 following a nationwide search conducted in coordination with an outside educational firm, Carney Sandoe & Associates (CS&A). Shortly after announcing Mrs. Coker’s headship, an Installation Committee was created to shape the installation event. The Ceremony of Installation is a timehonored Episcopal tradition that reveals an institution’s respect for the profound responsibility of school leadership.
Of the ceremony, Mrs. Coker noted, “I was honored to take part in such a hallowed tradition. The service and everyone in attendance reminded me just how vibrant the St. Anne’s School community is and has been for the last 30 years. I look forward to journeying forward together and seeing what the next 30 years have in store for us all at St. Anne’s School.”
Founded in 1994, St. Anne’s School of Annapolis draws from its Episcopal tradition as an independent, coeducational school, serving students in Twos through Eighth Grade. StAnnesSchool.org.

Exploring Nature and History
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, Maryland
D
id you know that the Smithsonian Institution has an ecological research center in central Maryland, complete with trails, a place to launch canoes and kayaks, and an environmental archaeology museum? The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), located just off Muddy Creek Road in Edgewater, is home to scientists from various disciplines who research issues affecting coastal zone environments around the world. SERC’s 2,650-acre campus includes 15 miles of protected shoreline, giving scientists access to a wide range of ecosystems to study.
SERC’s trails and floating dock are open for public use six days per week, all year long (holidays excepted). Entrance to SERC is free — just stop at the entrance booth to tell the gate guard why you’re there. The Woodlawn History Center, which showcases artifacts found on-site by SERC archaeologists and volunteers, is open on Fridays and Saturdays. Walkers and hikers of all ages can enjoy SERC’s trails, as they are relatively flat and wellmaintained.
Outdoor Activities
If you enjoy hiking, biking, paddling a kayak or canoe, birdwatching, or photography, you’ll find plenty to do at
SERC. SERC’s four miles of walking/ hiking/biking trails meander through marshlands, woods, and shorelines, inviting visitors to get close to nature. Launch your own canoe or kayak at the floating dock to the left of SERC’s research dock (pay the $5 fee at the nearby Reed Education Center) and explore the Rhode River.
The Maryland Ornithological Society’s Birder’s Guide to Maryland & DC reports that birdwatchers have spotted more than 225 species of birds at SERC. No matter when you visit SERC, you’ll find fascinating plants and animals to photograph, not to mention beautiful views of the Rhode River, Fox Creek, and the historic buildings on site.
The Reed Education Center has a cozy reading corner for children if you need to spend a few minutes indoors. There are books for adults, too. Take a look around the Reed Center while you’re there — you’ll find fish tanks and small exhibits related to SERC’s research projects.
Woodlawn History Center and the Java Ruin
SERC’s Woodlawn History Center opened in 2022. Housed in a plantation home built in 1735 and expanded in 1841 and again in the 1970s, Woodlawn History Center features exhibits on the home’s history and surrounding land as well as the history of the local area. Hands-on exhibits and artifacts help young visitors connect with the lives of the people, Indigenous, free, and enslaved, who lived and worked at Woodlawn and nearby Java. SERC’s Environmental Archaeology Lab volunteers excavated and cataloged many of the artifacts on display.
Southeast of the Woodlawn History Center, you’ll see a large brick ruin, all that’s left of U.S. Marine Corps First Lieutenant John Contee’s Java Plantation home. Contee bought Squirrel Neck Plantation after serving in the War of 1812 onboard USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”), renaming it Java after one of the famous naval battles he fought in. Lightning struck the mansion in 1890, igniting a fire. The fire-damaged
12 chesapeakefamily.com | MARCH 2024
bricks were used to rebuild the home, destabilizing it and eventually resulting in the ruin you see today. Metal support rods outline the dimensions of the central part of the house; the original structure had two hyphens connecting the main house with a wing on each side. One hyphen is still visible. Two of SERC’s trails begin near the Java Ruin.
Participatory Science Program
If you’re interested in getting involved with a science research project, SERC is the place for you. SERC’s Participatory Science Program recruits volunteers to help with short- and long-term projects. Volunteers with access to a boat or a 100-foot dock can assist the Chesapeake Water Watch team by taking photographs and collecting water samples. Otter lovers can share information about river otter sightings with the Chesapeake Bay Otter Alliance. Aspiring archaeologists aged 16 and older are welcome to participate in SERC’s Environmental Archaeology project.
Special Events at SERC
SERC’s family-friendly special events include the annual Maryland Day celebration, Environmental Archaeology Dig Days (ages 10 and up; special permission is needed for younger children to participate), summer Rhode River canoe trips (ages 8 and up), and summer drop-in nature talks. Check SERC’s calendar of events for more information.
Tips for Visitors
• Pets are not allowed at SERC.
• Arrive early in the warm-weather months. Parking is limited, and you can’t park on the road that leads to SERC.
• Leave your flip-flops at home. You can’t wear them at SERC.
• Swimming and wading are not permitted.
• Pack binoculars or a spotting scope so you can look for birds.
• Groups of seven or more people and large vehicles are not permitted. If you have a big family, you’ll need to split up and arrive in multiple vehicles.
• Bring insect repellent and sunscreen.
SERC’s marshes are home to multiple species of flying insects. The area is also known for ticks and poison ivy.
Naming conventions for the trails and the Java Ruin have changed over time, so signs and maps do not always match. The Java Ruin is also known as the Contee Mansion Ruins. The Woodlawn History Center was formerly known as Sellman House. The Java History Trail is called the Fox Creek Nature Trail on the campus map. The new history-themed trail behind the Woodlawn History Center is not on the current SERC campus map.
If You Go
As of this writing, SERC is open to the public, free of charge, Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Woodlawn History Center is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. SERC is closed on Sundays and federal holidays. Check the website for the latest information on hours of operation, volunteer opportunities, and special events.

on Youth Theater: Nurturing Talents, Fostering Growth
Exploring the World of Theater for Children and Teenagers: Opportunities, Challenges, and Rewards
By Dylan Roche
The oft-referenced quotation, “all the world’s a stage,” comes from Shakespeare himself but for some children and teens, it can feel like a reality.Their schedule is made up of performances, rehearsals, and auditions, and their social circle is made up of current and former castmates. For these budding young performers, theater provides an outlet for them to grow not only in their talents but also as human beings.
And there’s no shortage of local opportunities for them to gain experience, thanks to a thriving community of children’s performing arts organizations. Children’s Theatre of Annapolis, the Talent Machine Company, Stage & Screen Studios, Compass Rose Theater,

and many others make it possible for these youth to experience what it’s like to be part of a professional-quality production from start to finish.
While the thrill of singing or acting onstage in front of a live audience is rewarding in and of itself, theater teaches valuable life skills. Performers learn the power of experimentation and imagination. They get comfortable with speaking publicly or thinking creatively. The rehearsal process demands that they manage their time and multitask. Through all of it, they gain confidence.
But more than all of that, there’s one skill that might be most important of all—empathy. “When you truly inhabit a character and think about how to present another person outside of yourself, it encourages thought processes that are less self-centered and myopic,” says Michelle Bruno, president of Children’s Theatre of Annapolis (CTA).
Sounds exciting, right? But there’s a lot of work that goes into the theater process. Like any extracurricular activity, being part of a show requires dedication, but it pays off with big rewards. “I’d say be prepared for the time commitment, homework, sacrifice, and hard work,” says Lea Capps, president of Talent Machine Company (TMC). “With that comes many opportunities for making friends, learning new skills, and having a great time.”
Much of the preparation might start before the youth are even involved. These companies must select material that fits their program, often choosing shows they think will be interesting, challenging, appropriate, educational, and a good fit for their talent pool. They also must hire artistic staff—usually a director, music director, and choreographer—who can engage the cast and help foster an environment that’s productive and educational.
The production process starts for the youth with an audition, and every company has a slightly different approach. Audition notices break down what’s expected, often a short sample of a prepared song, followed by the opportunity to dance and read lines from the script. Although auditions can feel stressful, they’re an opportunity for performers to show off what they’re capable of doing. “Remember that an audition does not need to be perfect,” says Pete Garvey, owner of Stage and Screen Studios (S&S). “Members of the directorial staff will be there to observe, provide advice, and encourage.”
Bruno emphasizes that although preparation is important, it’s just as necessary for auditioners to be themselves. “Understanding of the show, and a clear understanding of the character you are auditioning for, if you are auditioning for a specific role, is critical,” she says. “The director and artistic staff should see what you would bring to the show and your take on the character.”
From there, the fun and hard work begin in equal measure. Once the cast list is announced, rehearsals begin. “I know that most outsiders don’t realize the amount of rehearsal time it takes to put on a production,”
MARCH 2024 | chesapeakefamily.com 15
Capps explains. “I’ve had people ask, ‘Can’t you just do a couple of numbers real quick?’ A ‘couple of numbers’ takes several hours of rehearsals.”
Garvey also sees many people who are surprised by what goes into a rehearsal. It requires actors to connect with the material as they learn it. “Someone new to the theater might be surprised by the intensity and duration of rehearsals where we thoroughly explore various choices, emotions, and interaction of characters throughout each scene,” he says. “It’s not just singing, dancing, and saying lines.”
Though the kids will be the ones who ultimately end up onstage, the rehearsal process is often a collaborative one that involves the whole family. Garvey explains, “We highly encourage parents to actively support their child’s involvement in the theatrical journey. Whether their student is a newcomer or a seasoned performer, parents play a crucial role in the process. This includes assisting with learning lines, engaging in conversations about each rehearsal’s process, and providing encouragement as their child tackles new character development challenges.”
Parents also fulfill a vital need as volunteers who help build sets, create costumes, collect props, publicize the show, and work on the tech elements like lights and sound. “I love to have the parents participate,” says Capps. “As with any community theater, we need many volunteers to make our shows go. Many of them are parents. Some come in early on in the process and help with rehearsal monitoring or costuming or props, and others come in later for set building, set decoration, and tech.”
Many students get theater experience through schools, either by taking music and acting classes or by participating in the school musical or school play. But these youth-centered community theaters offer a unique experience to connect with fellow thespians from other schools in an environment that’s focused on their area of interest.
“I think it’s creating more opportunity and diverse experiences when you work with a community theater,” Bruno explains. “This allows children to work with other children that they normally would not interact with. This is especially expansive for homeschooled children. It allows children to gain more experience and development opportunities as well.”
Community theater participation also takes the experience up a step. “School drama programs offer invaluable benefits to students, while organizations or companies dedicated to the theatrical process possess more concentrated resources, often closely resembling professional theaters,” explains Garvey. “Given the uniqueness of each student’s journey, some may prefer participating in a school drama
environment within their familiar peer group.
Meanwhile, others may opt for increased diversity, seeking to establish new friend groups and acquire more professionally oriented theatrical skills and experience in an established theater company. In either scenario, students derive significant benefits on multiple levels while engaging in performing arts.”
Some parents might find themselves asking, “Is theater the right pursuit for my child?” For younger, less experienced children, it never hurts to enroll in a workshop, class, or summer camp—such as those offered by any of these three organizations—just to get a sense of how much they enjoy the challenge before they audition for a mainstage production. And if they do decide to get involved? Get ready for something special. “The process is challenging,” Bruno says, “but the ability to take a thought, a vision, and then come together as a theater family and create something so beautiful is the true magic.”

S Navigating Summer Camp for Preschoolers
A Guide for Parents
By Lauren Burke Meyer
ummer camp is an important rite of passage for children. For countless parents, it’s essential and their form of childcare while school is out. Even stay-at-home-parents benefit from a well-deserved break. However, children — including preschoolers — are the ultimate winners because summer camp is not only fun, but an educational opportunity. Below you’ll find questions to ask throughout the camp process, as well as camp options for your preschooler.
Is your preschooler ready?
Before you begin, there’s one crucial question to answer. Is your preschooler ready for camp? For starters, many camps require that children be fully potty trained. Meaning, they can do everything in the bathroom independently. Potty training is a mixed bag for this age group. It can also be a long process until little ones can confidently go to the bathroom truly alone. Don’t stress or feel the need to rush if your child isn’t ready. There will be several other summers to fill with camps.
Next, what’s their attachment level to caregivers?
Is your child attached to your hip when out in public? If so, ease them into the experience of a stranger supervising them. A good transition process could involve having a familiar family member babysit. Then transition to a babysitter, who is less familiar, like a teenage neighbor. You could even work or do chores in the home as a way to ease your child’s comfort level. You want to ensure you’re not spending money on a camp for your child to sit in your lap the entire time.
Additionally, verbal skills are an important aspect to consider. Can family members, teachers, or other kids understand your
18 chesapeakefamily.com | MARCH 2024
child? There’s nothing more frustrating than when counselors and children can’t understand each other.
What’s available?
When most think of summer camp, the great outdoors, log cabins, and water activities are often images that first come to mind. A traditional sleepaway summer camp isn’t something your toddler is ready for.
Surprisingly, ballet and gymnastic camps are wonderful options for this age group. I’ve also coached lacrosse through the Annapolis-based program, Annapolax, specifically built for preschool-aged children. In time, toddlers as young as two could scoop balls, cradle, and even score goals. Introductory camps like these often incorporate other popular, age-appropriate activities like coloring.
Additionally, there are numerous nontraditional options perfect and affordable for your preschooler.
• Church Camps: Personally, these are always at the top of my list for my kids. They’re usually reasonably priced. They often don’t require you to be a church member, so you can attend multiple local ones.
• The YMCA is one of the largest preschool, afterschool, and camp providers serving families in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia. They offer outdoor games, crafts, STEM activities, water play, and more. Swimming camps are such an important investment. Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for kids one to four years old. Toddlers are naturally curious, and prioritizing this life-saving skill is critical.
• Library Programs: Whether your child is ready for camp or not, public libraries are one of the best resources for parents. Often events and activities like storytime are free. Visit your
county libraries’ website, and read their pamphlets or other literature to discover what’s happening. Libraries offer different activities with varying schedules, so you can always visit more than the library closest to home.
• Nature Centers provide opportunities for children to get outside for naturalist-led activities, hikes, games, and more.
Camp Accreditation
One question needs to be asked before you choose a camp. Is the camp accredited? Here are three organizations to look to.
• The American Camp Association (ACA) provides research, education, and training to promote safe and healthy camp experiences for all families. For more than 100 years, ACA has shared knowledge to ensure the quality of camp programs. Their stamp of approval can give reassurance to parents, especially those of young, vulnerable children.
• Anne Arundel County’s Department of Recreation and Parks offers organizational accreditation for youth sportsrelated programming and recreational activities such as Girl Scouts, Eagle Scouts, etc. They seek to ensure the quality and diversity of athletic and recreational programming in the county. Accreditation allows organizations to access facilities and fields using the facility scheduling process, provided they have met departmental standards and policies.
Thirdly, the Maryland Department of Health Youth Camps Program regulates and licenses all youth camps statewide to protect the health and safety of kids attending Maryland youth camps.
Once you’re confident that your child is ready for camp and you’ve done your research, the last thing to do is to sign up. Visit the “camp” section on chesapeakefamily.com for a camp directory based on your location.

Maryland Day
Maryland Day weekend of events returns for its 17th year from March 22 to 24, 2024. This annual weekend of events is filled with family-friendly events throughout Anne Arundel County that are free or just $1 to encourage locals and visitors to come out from their winter hibernation and explore the local heritage and culture sites in the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area. During this time the state celebrates Maryland’s birthday and the beginning of the spring season.
The Maryland Day weekend of events showcases the wide range of cultures, history, people, and landscapes that create the diverse community of Anne Arundel County and Maryland. Over 40 events are planned throughout the county. You can take a walking tour, visit museums, hike at historic sites, tour historic homes, museums, and colonial schools, where you can watch demonstrations that show what life was like in years past, explore an archeological lab filled with items found throughout the county, go on scavenger hunts and see local gardens starting to awaken. Events and venues are posted on the online Maryland Day event schedule at the MarylandDay.org.
“This year’s event theme, Maryland Day for All, reflects on the historic cultural and heritage sites of the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Areas,” says Erik Evans, Marketing Manager for Maryland Day. “Each location has a different story to tell, yet it all weaves together into the fabric that created the communities, county, and state that we all call home.
The events and activities will help you learn the local stories of people who have lived and worked on the land and waters of Anne Arundel County over the centuries. You will have a chance to enjoy the county’s natural landscapes at parks, historic farms, and other lands preserved as public open spaces. Cultural sites and art centers throughout the county will host open houses so that you can experience our cultural institutions.
For more information on Maryland Day events including last-minute event additions, changes, and venue contact information visit www.MarylandDay.org. and the Maryland Day social media pages.
