My house is a mess and I don't care
M
y house is a mess. Not just a little mess, but a big mess. The downstairs is full of stuff from our screened-in porch and rolled-up rugs waiting for renovations to be completed. The junk started creeping in slowly, but two weeks ago, there was an all-out assault on the order and control in our living room. We often eat out on our deck since it’s a nice view, we can spread out, and the dogs can run around in the yard. But the furniture has been taken off of the deck. It’s currently stacked up in the yard. And you know what? I’m past caring. We’ve already had one family birthday party since the junk took over. No one said anything. The kids just ran around the stacked-up furniture. I’m going to guess that there is a 50/50 chance that at least some of the junk will still be in the house on Thanksgiving. Not a problem as long as the stove is still working.
I’m most happy when the entire family is together in all of our loud and crazy interactions. There are also four dogs, which adds an entirely new dimension to crazy. Learning cartwheels in the family room, no problem. Pirouetting in tutus around the house is great entertainment. Cheers, the clinking of glasses at the beginning of the meal when everyone is finally wrangled to the table doesn’t have anything to do with the mess. It’s about the people you love and want close to you.

he lust green grounds at Fort McHenry belie the significance in history that the fort has played. Visitors can explore the 43-acre grounds and walk, run, or bike the one-mile-long loop that lines the water’s edge. The view of Baltimore is amazing, and there is plenty of room for a picnic or running around with your kids. Walking through the restored fort, it’s not hard to imagine being stationed there in 1814 and watching bombs raining down on the fort and surrounding area, which inspired our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Fortunately, the fort could withstand the assault, and the British Navy was forced to retreat. The fort was used again during the Civil War and served as a hospital during WWI. The largest collection of Civil War-era cannons line the battery.
The museum includes many flags, uniforms, photographs, weaponry, and other military memorabilia. Often there are costumed reenactors. Tours of the fort are self-guided, but throughout the day, rangers give the following scheduled talks. Program Schedule

$5 Million Grant Funding Will Support Long COVID-19 Research in Students
R
esearchers at Kennedy Krieger Institute have received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to expand access to comprehensive care for children and adolescents with long COVID-19, particularly among underserved populations. During the five-year project, researchers at the Pediatric Post-COVID-19 Rehabilitation Clinic will receive up to $1 million annually to expand and strengthen its integrative services in Baltimore and the overall midAtlantic region. This expansion will involve developing resources to help school nurses and other healthcare professionals identify long COVID in students, educate community leaders, and create accommodations to help children with long COVID-19 succeed in school, life and their community. In addition, researchers will launch an Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) project specifically for pediatric long COVID-19. ECHO is a model to train community health providers to recognize, diagnose and treat patients with complex diseases who lack access to specialty health care providers in their communities. Kennedy Krieger researchers will assist providers and patients in low-resource areas, including rural locations and among underserved minority populations. Dr. Laura Malone, co-director of the Institute’s Pediatric Post COVID-19 clinic and principal investigator on this grant, anticipates that expanding capabilities will benefit the region. “Right now, about 150 patients are currently being evaluated by our clinic. Our aim is to increase the reach of our knowledge and care to those that may not be able to travel to
8 chesapeakefamily.com | NOV/DEC 2023
see us, or may not need a full, comprehensive treatment plan,” Dr. Malone said “In particular, there are not a lot of clinics out there that serve pediatric patients who have experienced post-acute COVID-19. We are the only pediatric organization to be awarded this AHRQ post COVID-19 research grant.” Long COVID is defined as persistent conditions that continue after the initial infection has resolved. Pediatric symptoms are similar to those in adults and can include chest pain, fatigue, exercise intolerance and brain fog. However, a primary distinction between treating adults and children is the difficulty of identifying symptoms in children and teenagers who may struggle to articulate and advocate for their health. Dr. Malone has observed this challenge at the clinic. “What we see is that [long COVID] can take a significant effect on the quality of life. Lasting effects not only impact the functioning of the child, but also the family,” Dr. Malone explained. “Children may not always have the developmental ability to really identify and understand what is happening to them. They may not be able to express their symptoms. There are important developmental aspects to consider as to how long COVID-19 effects their function, social development, and more.” Between 5% and 25% of U.S. children who have been infected by the SARS-CO-V2 virus, have experienced long COVID, said Dr. Malone, who helped create national guidelines for practitioners treating children with long COVID. “Comparing that percentage range to the number of children who have been infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, that’s still a really high number of children that need resources, assistance, and care,” Dr. Malone said. “Providing those services and resources is one of the main goals for us to take on with this grant.”

Planting the Perfect Welcome Fall in Love With Planters Colorful Displays For All Seasons
E
very step can feel overwhelming when you’re new to landscaping, especially with the hefty price tags and time commitment of research, buying, planting and maintaining. To minimize risk, I tapped my friend and Vectorworks Product Marketing Manager – Landscaper Eric Gilbey, PLA, to offer advice when planning for planters this fall season. I met Eric while working at global design and BIM software provider, Vectorworks, Inc. several years ago. THE BACKSTORY
Like many homeowners, the front steps to my home has large open areas on either side of the main entryway. While a white bench filled one side, it left the opposite side looking even more empty and unbalanced. My husband and I decided that three planters in different sizes would fix the problem and create a more welcoming doorstep. “When choosing your vessel, you need to decide if you want a permanent planter made of something like protected wood, terra cotta, painted pottery, metal, or a temporary planter such as a coco liner, coconut coir liner, or even a hollowed-out pumpkin or squash,” Gilbey shared with me. Always on a budget, my husband found affordable, concrete modern planters in a set of three on Amazon, perfect for outdoor and indoor use. The brand was Kante in sizes 20”, 16.5” and 13.3”.

THE PROJECT
This past summer, my husband and I purchased the following flowers with the hopes of playing off our purple wreath (and my favorite color), plus complementing our pink door nicely. Our Flowers:
• Dichondra Silver Falls • Supertunia Bordeaux • Salvia Cathedral Lavender • Crocosmia “Norwich Canary” We wanted each planter to provide a range of heights to help fill the volume of the space and create interest. The taller plantings — Crocosmia “Norwich Canary” — were put in the back of each pot with our flowering plants (Supertunia Bordeaux and Salvia Cathedral Lavender) in the middle and the Dichondra Silver Falls in the front spilling over the edge. Given the size of the planters, my husband bought UpsA-Daisy planter lifts to raise the bottom of the planters. The largest planter was too big, so we added bricks and plastic bottles from our recycling to fill the majority of the planter. These two tactics allowed us to use less planting soil, thus saving money. Ups-A-Daisy planter lifts, available on their website, as well as Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart websites. Luckily, our plant choices held on nicely for the early fall. We followed Gilbey’s advice to select plants that aren’t fast-growing and flexible to accept over-watering or underwatering. As we ensured we got the full bang for our buck, we incorporated fall décor items like mums and pumpkins of various sizes, colors, and textures to phase into the season. Homestead Gardens provided all our original plants, plus our mums and various pumpkins. To offset costs, I found a small bag of six pumpkins from BJs for $3.99 and decided to try them this season. “Skelly” our family skeleton added the perfect spooky touch.

With the upcoming cooler temperatures and frosts, I’m starting to plan my next planters phase and determining which plants can stay. I enlisted Gilbey’s advice, given our region’s climate, plus advice for those that receive an abundance of sun or shade. For homeowners still learning — or if you simply need a refresher — perennial plants regrow every spring, and annual plants live only for one growing season. Sun Plants

spring, it’ll flower throughout the summer and well into fall until frost, and the color choices of the blooms – in some cases are multicolored. If thought about ahead, Latanas can carry color schemes through both seasons. Shade Plants
provide contrast to summer colors and represent fall leaves in their planters in the fall. Grasses (perennials): Especially the red or purple tinted
blades, which add that rustic hue for fall. These are less hardy, but other fun, perennial suggestions include the sun-loving Dwarf Egyptian Papyrus; the shadepreferring Croton; and Caladium, a shade- and sun-loving plant. Gilbey pointed out that many annual plants, like those mentioned above, may not be available now – they could be acquired in spring, with the idea that they’d persist into their fall planter. The best advice from Gilbey is to have a plan before you begin and to be aware of impending frost. “If you do include plants that will go dormant, remember these can be integrated into your landscapes, so it’s good to think of a plan in advance for transplanting them later,” Gilbey said. He also noted that if you incorporate tropical plants into your arrangement, remember to bring those inside once temperatures drop. “Have a plan to get tropical plants indoors over winter and match their sun preferences in the indoor setting,” Gilbey noted. when listening. As a 5th grader, he’d doodle or put his head on his desk, eyes closed. He frequently gave the impression that he had no idea what was happening. Boy, was that wrong! His teacher discovered John was listening to every word. Despite appearing like his head was in the clouds, John was an avid listener and had a response every time his teacher called him. Understanding Learning Styles Presenting Information So Students Can Best Understand It
H
ave you ever wondered what your dominant learning style is? Each of us has a preferred learning method, generally aligning with one of the four most common learning styles: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. The names of these styles may prompt an intuitive understanding of which best fits your personality – and most likely, your initial assumption is correct! Exploring learning styles is fascinating for the insight it provides into our preferences as learners and critical for understanding why knowing about them is significant in the first place.
16 chesapeakefamily.com | NOV/DEC 2023
Most Common Learning Styles Visual Learner. As a child, Elaine
loved picture books. She didn’t care so much about the words as she did the illustrations. Before she could even read, she would study every detail of the pictures to create the story as she saw it. As she grew older, Elaine naturally gravitated towards infographics and watched videos when learning something new. Visual learners prefer using images, pictures, colors, and maps to organize information and communicate with others. They can visualize information in their mind’s eye, remember details, and make connections.
always had a passion for words. As a child, she could get lost in the pages of a book, and she felt connected to characters as if they were friends. She absorbed information through the written word. Her love for reading naturally translated into a love for writing, enabling her to express her thoughts, ideas, and knowledge effectively. Emma usually turned to books and articles as her preferred method for learning new information. Reading/writing learners have a strong appreciation for words. They prefer to engage with information through text, often needing to read something to grasp the concept fully. They’re also likely to take extensive notes and write summaries to aid their learning. Kinesthetic Learner. Since he was
small, Leo was always on the move. He had difficulty sitting still, and he learned best when he could use his body. Whether it was through sports, building models, or simply moving around while thinking, Leo’s learning was intertwined with physical activity. Throughout school, Leo struggled to sit at a desk but thrived in environments where learning included hands-on activities and active participation. Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing and experiencing. They excel when they can learn through movement and touch. These learners benefit from
hands-on activities, experiments, and any learning environment where they can manipulate objects to understand concepts better. Now that you are familiar with the primary learning styles, you’re likely reflecting on your own learning journey, thinking, “Ohhh … that’s why I’ve always preferred [ABC]...”
Types Of
LEARNERS Visual Learner Learns well by watching something before trying it
Why It Matters
Understanding learning styles allows educators to present information in various ways so their students can best understand and apply it – which is especially important when first learning a concept. Let me use Lily as an example. One sunny Tuesday, seven-year-old Lily came home from school with a math problem: “If there were 18 apples on the table and your mom used 5 apples to bake a pie, how many apples would be left?” Lily thought about the problem. Then she gathered 18 small pebbles and laid them out on her table. She counted 5 pebbles, saying out loud, “These are the apples mom used for the pie.” She pushed them aside and then counted the remaining pebbles. Triumphantly, she announced, “The answer is 13, Mom! We have 13 apples left!” Lily would eventually understand how to use the traditional algorithm to solve her problem (18-5 = 13). Yet if that had been the sole teaching method when she was first learning how to subtract, it’s easy to see how she could become frustrated and, worse, adopt an attitude of, “I can’t do math.”
Expose Children to Different Learning Styles
Learning is not a one-size-fits-all process – nor is it linear. Certainly, optimizing a child’s dominant learning style is important, especially when learning something new. However, limiting them to that one style does them a disservice. It is equally important to expose children to learning through a variety of learning styles. Using different approaches, we guide children out of their comfort zones and encourage

them to explore different perspectives, thus enhancing their critical thinking. James was a classic kinesthetic learner, especially in math. The ability to interact with manipulatives increased his number sense. Creating shapes and models, and experiencing the edges, angles, and surfaces, enabled a more profound understanding for him. This was James’ comfort zone, where he felt “good” at math. However, his teacher used all sorts of approaches when teaching math. She taught traditional algorithms, she also introduced podcasts and diagrams. At first, James was overwhelmed. He couldn’t learn math by listening to a podcast! Fortunately, his teacher helped him connect these learning styles to his kinesthetic foundations. Over time,
when listening to math concepts, James would draw, creating a two-dimensional representation to help him interpret the information. When visuals were presented, he learned to imagine the texture and form of the shapes so he could solve problems. Helping James determine how to connect different types of learning to the style he was most comfortable with allowed him to be successful in ways he didn’t think he could be. Understanding learning styles enables educators to play to individual learning preferences. It also enriches the overall educational experience by fostering adaptability, critical thinking, and resilience in students, thus paving the way for growth and lifelong learning. NOV/DEC 2023

The museum’s Exhibit Barn is filled with pristine classic automobiles dating from the early days of car travel to the postWorld War II era. In addition, you’ll find motorcycles, trucks, vintage automotive memorabilia, license plates, and toy cars and trucks (look up — the toys are displayed on the barn’s beams). The museum’s collection includes museumowned vehicles and classic automobiles loaned or donated by car aficionados. The exhibit changes every six months. According to museum Board Member Tad duPont, 22 cars are currently on display. Among them are a bright red 1915 Model T truck, a 1922 Packard Open Touring Car used in the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” and a 1917 Maxwell Model 25 driven in an epic 2016 cross-country journey. Informative placards explain the history and provenance of each classic car. Remember to ask about the 1931 American LaFrance firetruck, currently housed across the street at the Old Mill. This firetruck is a St. Michaels icon, as it is a featured participant in the St. Michaels Christmas Parade and the museum-sponsored Memorial Day Parade. Museum Activities and Special Events

254 Mariner Passage in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Doors opened on October 18, and tickets are available until December 10, 2023, on all days of the week except Monday. Before my visit, I stumbled upon one attendee’s review: “It was like walking through a documentary, and we felt as if we really got to know some of the passengers personally by the end.” Perfect. Just what I wanted. A deeper dive (pardon the pun) into the stories about the people aboard the Titanic. Did it live up to the hype? Absolutely. Even the most well-read and knowledgeable expert about the British luxury passenger liner will learn something new at the exhibition.
What is offered?
By Lauren Burke Meyer
Travel Back in Time The Titanic: The Timeless Fascination and Must-See Exhibition at National Harbor
T
he fascination for the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Titanic is unrelenting. The ship’s tragic sinking on April 14–15, 1912, during its maiden and final voyage to New York City from Southampton, England, killed roughly 1,500 people.
24 chesapeakefamily.com | NOV/DEC 2023
Followed by its initial discovery in 1985 with numerous follow-up visits to the shipwreck, the Ship of Dreams will forever captivate the world. After sold-out runs in London and New York, Titanic. The Exhibition is now open at the National Harbor at
Audio Guide There are no guided tours, but in my opinion, a move-at-your-own-pace audio guide is better. You can replay any of the short summaries as often as you like. Through a comprehensive audio guide — available in English and Spanish — recounts from the ship’s construction to the fateful night it sank are shared. Apparently, the “unsinkable ship” cost $7.5 million to build, an estimated $225 million in today’s money. The most meaningful part of the narrative experience was learning more about the stories behind the passengers and crew. Several passengers had bad feelings before the journey, and many weren’t intended to be on the Titanic but were transferred due to a coal strike. Most know Captain Edward John Smith, William McMaster Murdoch, and the “Unsinkable Molly Brown.” However, the exhibition brought so many new details forward about these individuals and other passengers. For instance, Captain Smith was White Star Line’s most experienced and had never had a major accident. He was nicknamed “the millionaire’s captain” and put in charge of the best ships
frequented by the elite. Eighty percent of men saved on the Titanic owe their lives to Murdoch, ironically the officer in charge when the ship hit the iceberg. He focused on filling the lifeboats with as many survivors as possible. Brown, known for encouraging women to row in the lifeboats, made medals for several of the Carpathia crew for their heroism in rescuing Titanic survivors. Surprisingly, I never knew that the box-office record-breaking film’s love story between Jack and Rose was loosely based on a true story. Henry Morley, a 39-year-old shopkeeper from England, married with 2 kids, fell in love with his shop worker, Kate Phillips, twenty years his junior. The two traveled under false names aboard the Titanic. Morley gave Phillips a necklace as a token of his love. Forced to leave Morley behind, Phillips boarded a lifeboat with the necklace in her pocket. She gave birth to their child nine months later. Re-Creation The exhibition’s re-creations were absolutely mesmerizing. Walking down the first-class hallway, for a brief moment, you felt what it was like to walk the luxurious liner’s halls. The juxtaposition of the humble thirdclass cabins and first-class suites was interesting to see. It was chilling to learn that 75% of third-class passengers died compared to 38% for first class. The third-class cabin locations further away from lifeboats were mainly to blame. Lastly, my photos of the miniature ship model can’t do it proper justice. You must see the exact replicas of sleeping quarters, dining rooms, the gymnasium, and more. Artifacts Travel bibles, watches, jewelry, and other prized, personal possessions paid tribute to the passengers and crew affected by such a terrible tragedy. A somber feeling to think about the fine China and silverware used for the first
and last time. The letters recounting the inner thoughts and experiences of those traveling were most moving. There are so many legends surrounding the Titanic with varied tellings. However, the letters are unfaltering in their recounts. Merchandise For fellow Titanic fanatics, several books were available for purchase, including “Sea of Death: The Baltic, 1945” by Claes-Göran Wetterholm, one of the world’s greatest authorities on the history of the Titanic. He has participated in four expeditions to the wreckage and dedicated more than 40 years investigating its history. Fittingly, Wetterholm is also the curator and historian for the exhibition.
How long to allow?
According to the event website, they estimate the exhibition takes approximately 80-90 minutes to experience. The friendly and helpful staff moved everyone through rather quickly. I’d recommend skipping ahead of the first five or so stops to break from the crowd and then return to the beginning. Even with taking numerous photos and notes, plus re-listening to some key facts on the audio guide, I finished the tour in just under 90 minutes. If you book the last session, doors close 15 minutes after the start. Given the logistics of parking, and the heavy traffic surrounding the National Harbor, I’d recommend doing earlier tours, so you don’t risk missing your time slot. A general rule is to avoid being late. Your ticket will still be valid but conditioned to the available space in later time slots. Meaning, you may miss your opportunity to attend.
What to bring?
• Print out your ticket (or screenshot/ email on your phone) • Fully charged phone for plenty of pictures (flash photography is
prohibited, as it can damage the artifacts) • Comfortable walking shoes • Mask – while not required at this time, any regulations at the time of your ticket will be observed. While the website said to bring headphones, or you’d have to rent an audio guide, everyone was offered a complimentary set of audio headphones and a player. A staff member confirmed that this was always offered. Thankfully, you aren’t required to download yet another app you’ll never use again.
What to leave at home? • Selfie sticks • Water • Food
Two miscellaneous items relating to comfort:
• Bathrooms were available conveniently at the midway point by the recreated iceberg you were allowed to touch… brr. • Numerous benches were throughout the exhibit for attendees to rest.
Parking
Luckily, there are plenty of paid parking garages nearby. I parked at Fleet Garage because it was the first garage I saw and easy to access. I did enjoy my short walk, the delightful smell of hot dogs, and scenic views of the National Harbor’s water, Ferris wheel, and giant television playing the Navy vs. Air Force football game. If you’re running late or the weather is bad, I recommend parking at St. George Garage right across the street from the exhibition.
Ticket Costs
All ages are welcome at the exhibition, and children under four are free. My honest recommendation would be to avoid bringing young children, so you can truly enjoy the tour and take your time. The inability to drink or have snacks is also less ideal for little ones.
