The Summer of Socialization

oday is one of those glorious summer days when the sky is a clear blue with streaks of fluffy white clouds. The temperature is mild enough for shorts but the humidity doesn’t make you sweat the minute you walk out the door. I’ve been outside all morning and loving every minute of it. On this perfect day we walked into downtown Annapolis early and grabbed some savory treats for breakfast. Then we went to the Newman Street Playground and met a mom willing to be the Tyrannosaurus Rex and playfully follow the kids, including hers, around while occasionally roaring and chomping. Reluctantly leaving the playground we walked along City Dock heading to the Water Taxi stand and took a too quick trip back to the end of the street we live on. It was only 11am when we got back to the house. By noontime the 20-month-old had fallen asleep in my lap while listening to music that she usually loves to dance to. I love these easy summer days outside. Follow along online with our daily 100 Days of Summer.

We offer suggestions for a different activity or place to go every day until Labor Day so that you can have some perfect summer days with your kids too. This issue of Chesapeake Family Life features event listings through August and a sneak peak at places for families to visit in Richmond. The 2021 Favorite Doctors and Health Care Practitioners are recognized in this issue. What a year they have had! And as usual, these doctors have gone above and beyond for their patients - our families. On page 11, you can find up to date information on the COVID vaccine for children from an interview with two of this year's nominated Fav Docs. If you’re looking for a new health care provider this list is an excellent place to start. Happy Summer.

Making History at Camden Yards

H

Adrienne Roberson Becomes PA Announcer for the Orioles

ere in the Chesapeake region, we know a thing or two about the biggest names and accomplishments in Baltimore baseball: Cal’s streak, Frank Robinson’s pivotal impact on the team in the 60’s and 70’s, and John Means’s stellar recent no-hitter. Now, there’s a new name for the books: Adrienne Roberson, the first female public address announcer in franchise history. Before being named the voice of Oriole Park in April, Roberson was the in-house announcer for the Bowie Baysox, the Orioles’ Double-A affiliate, for 17 years. Her prior work included stints with the Knoxville Smokies minor league team, Sirius XM, and radio stations in Pennsylvania and California. Roberson was no stranger to Birdland

when she got called up to the big leagues; she worked O’s games at Camden Yards here and there and was able to follow the careers of players as they advanced from playing ball in Bowie to the big show in Baltimore. Still, though, Roberson says it feels a little surreal to be in the announcer seat at Oriole Park. “It still hasn’t completely hit me,” she tells Chesapeake Family Life. “There are moments where I go ‘Oh my gosh…it’s me!’ It’s what I always wanted to do.” In a press release following the news, Orioles Senior Vice President of Administration & Experience Greg Bader said the club is thrilled to welcome Roberson into the fold. “We are excited to have Adrienne assume the full-time role as the voice of Oriole Park. After working several

JULY/AUGUST 2021

Orioles games over the past ten seasons and serving as the voice of the Baysox for nearly two decades, she is familiar with our players throughout the entire Orioles system, and we are proud to now regularly feature her voice, one that many of our fans already know and love, on a nightly basis.” In addition to the starting lineups, Roberson announces the singer(s) of the National Anthem, the player and hero of the game, and other bits of loudspeaker fun. During this unusual year, she’s also responsible for announcements reminding fans to keep their masks on. Due to COVID restrictions and safety precautions, Roberson isn’t yet addressing a full house but says it’s still exciting to be part of the experience for the fans who are in attendance. “It’s already feeling great, because last year I did nine games to no one (in the crowd). It’s great to be seeing people and the fans cheering.” And once kids start running the bases after games on Sundays, says Roberson, things will start to feel even better. As the new voice on the mic at Camden Yards, Roberson has become the fourth active female announcer in the major leagues, in company with Amelia Schimmel (Oakland Athletics), Renel Brooks-Moon (San Francisco Giants), and Marysol Castro (New York Mets). When asked why it’s so important that people—and young girls in particular—see more women in the PA announcer chair, Roberson says “because it’s possible. To know you can have a dream, you can go for your goals, you can do anything you can put your heart and mind to.” As she considers the most memorable highlights in her new role thus far, Roberson says that a particularly special moment with a friend, sportswriter and ESPN reporter Marly Rivera, stands out. Rivera, who was at Oriole Park to cover the Yankees when they played the Birds, made her way across the stadium for a quick hug. Roberson says that’s when it began to really sink in that she had finally made it to the place where she always wanted to be: part of MLB baseball, shoulder to shoulder with a female peer who had made it too, doing what she loves. —By Laura Boycourt

new & notable the disease is almost zero. This is due the fact that the under 12 age group has not been a significant source of infections and the incidence rate has been low. · Mask wearing is recommended when indoors (and in some places like a doctor’s office, still mandatory) but when outside, there's virtually no transmission of the disease.

What about socializing with other kids?

COVID Vaccine Update

T

Trust Your Pediatrician

rust the scientists and the facts behind the COVID vaccine, and what it means for your kids this summer and beyond. Chesapeake Family Life Podcast Third Floor Views host, Janet Jefferson, sat down with Dr. Margaret Turner and Dr. Katherine Edwards from Annapolis Pediatrics to get the most recent and up to date information about vaccinating children and adolescents. Both doctors supported the idea that the vaccine will allow for this to be a “summer of socialization for all ages.” Currently, the youngest approved age to vaccinate is 12 years old. It is unclear if younger ages (down to six months of age) will be approved for the vaccine before the new school year starts this fall but over the age of 12 is approved and good to go.

Highlight Spotlight

· CDC states that once you are fully vaccinated, you can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic. · If you are traveling in the United States, you do not need testing before or after travel, and there is no need for selfquarantine if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. · For those under the age of 12 who are not vaccinated but are with adults who are vaccinated, their risk of contracting

Now we know the vaccine is safe and an important step to ending the pandemic. But what does that mean for summertime activities like going to the pool, taking a vacation at the beach, or having a backyard barbeque? Both Dr. Turner and Dr. Edwards say “yes” to all of them. They say children need to go to camp, they need to be off of their devices and not have a virtual anything. We have all been isolated for so long that children and adults alike have forgotten a lot of social skills, or never even learned any if they are two years old and under. Dr. Turner thinks everyone should “dip their toe into whatever pond they’re most comfortable with” when it comes to socialization and resuming activities. Dr. Edwards agrees by saying that different people will have different levels of comfort engaging in social contact but they both strongly recommend that everyone get outside this summer and get off their screens for a happy and healthier summer.

A Whole New World

P

What's new at Disney this year

ost-pandemic travel is picking up and many families want a vacation with a major fun factor, which is why now may be the perfect time to head to the most magical place on earth: the Walt Disney Resort. Since reopening in July 2020, Disney has established strict protocols that provide a safe and thoughtful way for families to visit their favorite parks. CDC recommendations are in place, including minimal touchpoints, contactless purchasing and sanitizing stations throughout the parks. Disney was already known for its stringent cleaning practices, but now park visitors can expect to see cleaning crews around every corner. Many rides have also installed plexiglass

barriers on the attraction and within waiting areas. Planning in advance for a family Disney trip has always been advisable, but now park rules make it absolutely essential. First and foremost, reservations are a requirement for all four theme parks: the Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Only ticketed reservations will gain entry, and families can only book entry to two parks per day. This ensures that each park doesn’t exceed capacity limits and allows for a more distanced experience within each park. Lower capacity also means shorter wait times, so all four parks have paused the FastPass ride reservation system for now.

JULY/AUGUST 2021

Attraction and character experiences may also feel a little different. Parades and fireworks shows have been paused in order to keep crowds at a minimum, and closeup character meet and greets have been replaced with character processions. Reservations at Disney restaurants open 60-days in advance, and quick service restaurants require guests to order and prepay in the Disney app. Despite the closures of the past year, behind-the-scenes magic was in full gear, as construction continued at most parks on upcoming attractions. A few new rides and attractions opened just before the pandemic, such as Star Wars Land and Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Featuring a number of restaurants, shops, and two rides, Millennium Falcon and Rise of the Resistance, Galaxy’s Edge is a huge draw for any Star Wars fan. At Hollywood Studios, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad debuted in March 2020. Epcot has experienced a makeover at its entrances, and several rides and attractions are set to open in late 2021 and 2022. The much-anticipated Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure ride in the France pavilion is expected to open in October 2021, while Epcot’s new nighttime show, Harmonious, will also begin later this year. It is set to be one of Disney’s largest nighttime shows ever. 2022 will bring the opening of the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride, a water maze called Moana: Journey of Water, and the Space 220 restaurant, an interactive cosmic themed restaurant. At Magic Kingdom, the classic Jungle Cruise ride is undergoing a major rehaul and is expected to open in Fall 2021. The biggest attraction set to open in 2022 at Magic Kingdom is the TRON Lightcycle Run Roller Coaster near Space Mountain in Tomorrowland. With its rigorous cleaning practices, reservation requirements and CDC protocols, a trip to Disney is possible in this post-pandemic world. Families can take advantage of Disney World’s special pricing that offers extra park days and hotel stays through the end of July 2021. Beginning in October, Walt Disney Resort will kick off its fifty-year anniversary celebration. Every park will celebrate with new lights shows, dazzling decorations and special food dishes that commemorate fifty years of the most magical place on earth. —Katie Riley

Wheaton Regional Park & Brookside Garden Park Spotlight

W

heaton Regional Park in Silver Spring, has a little of something for everyone including an ice skating rink, primitive campsites, riding stable, fishing and an indoor tennis center. But for families, the 500 acres of trails and playground are perfect for an afternoon of play, and link directly to the beautiful Brookside Gardens. The Shorefield area of the park features the newly remodeled Adventure Playground. Slides of all sizes encourage daredevils and reassure the youngest kids with the range of selection. Multiple climbing structures include nets and a wall. And then there are so many concrete animals surrounding a sandy play area that it’s hard for kids to decide if they want to operate a sand digger or sit on a gigantic play animal. Once your kids have had enough time playing hard, you can take a two-mile ride on the miniature train or the 106-year old carousel complete with 33 jumping horses, three zebras and two chariots. Tickets are required to ride the train. This part of the park is surrounded by grassy areas and tall trees, perfect for picnicking

or tossing a frisbee. There are 11 miles of trails, four of which are stroller accessible. Brookside Gardens cover 50 acres of landscaped aquatic, azalea, butterfly, rose, and Japanese-style gardens. It’s not unusual to see turtles, butterflies and colorful birds in the gardens. The Conservatory is open daily from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. It features plants from around the world as well as fragrant plants such as snapdragons, rose-scented geranium, myrtle, and tricolor sage. Within the conservatory there is usually a butterfly display, but it has been canceled for 2021. Masks are required. Free: No reservations required. Brookside Nature Center, open on Saturday and Sunday from 1-5pm, is a short walk from the conservatory and has a parking lot adjacent to the building. There are indoor and outdoor observation areas as part of the nature center. A live animal display includes animals that have been injured and are rehabilitating, and an active beehive helps kids understand the lives of bees. This is a mega-park filled with adventure opportunities that everyone in your family is sure to enjoy. —Donna Jefferson

Science Museum of Virginia

From a Speed exhibit (that includes a Supersonic jet, a light race, and hurricane force winds) to ecology labs, animals to science experiments, there’s no limit when it comes to scientific exploration at the SMV. The museum’s Dome theater, which has the largest screen in the state, transports guests to the depths of the ocean and the far reaches of space. There’s the Forge, a “makerspace” where families can take part in STEM projects, Mental Health: Mind Matters, a touring exhibit that offers visitors a chance to learn more about mental health, and Boost!, which provides interactive brain and physical challenges. Add in Green Science, a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and LightPlace, an interactive exhibit focused on STEM experiences for kids five and under, and it’s nearly impossible to explore all the museum has to offer in just a day. smv.org

Maymont

Imagine the fun that could be had on 100 acres featuring a Romanesque-style mansion, wide open park space, pristine gardens, and a nature center. The possibilities are endless at Maymont, a Victorian estate that functions as a public park and museum. Visitors can explore the mansion and buildings on the property, meet some cuddly friends at the Robins Nature Center or farm and wildlife habitats, or stroll through the breathtaking gardens. maymont.org

Children’s Museum of Richmond

Adjacent to the Science Museum of Virginia is the Children’s Museum of Richmond, which is celebrating its 40th birthday in September. The museum also has a second location in the Richmond suburb of Midlothian, southwest of the city. From learning about professions like teaching or driving an ambulance to exploring a living treehouse or learning how a bank operates, the museum offers children wonderful handson opportunities for discovering more about livelihoods, science, and nature. There’s even a carousel at the downtown location; don’t forget to take a ride before you leave! childrensmuseumofrichmond.org

The Flying Squirrels

If you’ve got a baseball fan in the family—or are just intrigued by the team’s name—a visit to “The Diamond” in Richmond to catch a ball game is just the ticket. The Double-A affiliate team for the San Francisco Giants, the Flying Squirrels are now in their 10th season and play primarily evening games until late September. Fans of all ages can enjoy all the fanfare and charm that come standard during a game, as well as some delicious and wacky food choices including the Funnville Concession Stand’s PB&J Bacon Burger. While kids aren’t currently allowed on the field, the team reports that some special events for Squirrel Tails Kids Club members will allow young fans to run the bases and play a game of catch on the field. milb.com/Richmond

options make for a high-octane day. At this time, some types of reservations are required, and safety precautions are in place. kingsdominion.com

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

The VMFA offers a world-class collection of art in the heart of the Museum District in Richmond. From Fabergé (think eggs) to bronze sculpture, photography to some of the most famed names in painting and other media, the museum offers a global exploration of creativity past and present. For visitors with young children in tow, the VMFA offers several fun ways to explore the museum including themed gallery scavenger hunts. Guests can wrap up their visit with a bite at the museum’s restaurant or café and a walk to see a waterfall and outdoor exhibition in the E. Claiborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden. vmfa.museum

Carytown

Just west of downtown Richmond and positioned between the Museum District and the James River lies Carytown, a hub of eclectic retail and dining options. Murals adorn buildings, sidewalks bustle with buskers, families, and students from the neighboring Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and small businesses provide everything fun and unique. Catch a show at the Byrd Theater, grab a slice of ‘za at the Mellow Mushroom, check out the wares at one of the nearby boutique stores, then enjoy a sweet treat at the Sugar & Twine bakeshop. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

Lovers of flora and fauna will rejoice with 50 acres of gardens to wander and explore. A domed conservatory, more than a dozen gardens and specialty walks, dedicated water and sand play spaces, several dining options, and an education center offer countless opportunities to learn about and appreciate multitudes of blooms, species, and landscapes. lewsiginter.org

The James River

erhaps the biggest commonality we as individuals have with those around us, is that each one of us are a unique and multifaceted creation. We each face our own struggles, harbor our own strengths, cultivate our own interests, and acquire our unique perspective of the world around us based on our own experiences. Differences are a part of life and they are something to be aware of, learn from, to respect, adapt to, and even celebrate. This article is meant to shed light on the millions of Americans, including those in our own communities, who live with disabilities, differences, and chronic health conditions of all kinds. Even among those living with differences and disabilities, there will be a wide variance among lifestyle, ability, and impact based on the intersectionality of their identities and the specifics of the difference, health condition, and/or disability they live with.

Breaking it Down

A disability can be defined as a condition that to varying degrees impairs an individual in some manner. Disabilities can include physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive or intellectual impairment, mental health struggles, and chronic diseases or health conditions. To break things down further, disabilities vary widely and may include things like spinal cord disabilities, head injuries, vision impairments, hearing impairments, learning disabilities or differences, psychological disorders, and other invisible disabilities such as chronic pain, lyme’s disease, diabetes, sleep disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, and IBS just to name a few. Differences include anything that sets one apart from a standard subset of a population. Differences can include things like congenital limb differences, skin conditions such as vitiligo, or psoriasis, or craniofacial differences affecting the head and face. Chronic health conditions can also vary greatly and are nearly innumerable, but can include things like cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, heart conditions, asthma, kidney disease, autoimmune disorders, and Alzheimer›s.

Person First

Every individual is different and every individual who lives with a difference, disability, or chronic health condition will have their own preferences and desires regarding how they are spoken to and referred to in conversations and interactions. Widely speaking, as a society we should strive to use person-first language when referring to someone living with some sort of disability or difference. Person-first language strives to view and refer to the person for who they are rather than associate them solely with their disability or difference. Putting the person before the disability helps ensure that the focus is on the

Differences are a part of life and they are something to be aware of, learn from, to respect, adapt to, and even celebrate. individual. This approach serves to describe what a person “has” rather than make the disability or difference seem like the sole identity of who the person is. Simple changes in phrases such as “person with a disability,” as opposed to phrases such as “the disabled person” shift the focus to the individual. Referring to someone as an individual with autism, an individual with diabetes, or an individual who uses a wheelchair are person first approaches whereas an autistic individual, a diabetic, or a wheelchair bound person instead put the focus on the disability, difference, or condition. The best way to find out how someone likes to be referred to or how they like to refer to their specific disability, difference, or condition is to simply ask. This goes for offering help and assistance as well. Many individuals in the disability community pride themselves on their ability to adapt and their sense of independence. Not all people were born with the disability they are currently living with and it can sometimes be a source of frustration for people to assume that they are always in need of assistance. This is not to say that we should not be kindhearted people with good intentions who offer assistance to others regardless of disability status, however phrasing questions such as “may I offer assistance?” or “would you like help with that?” are good to ask prior to offering unsolicited assistance. Disabilities and differences are not contagious. Sometimes young children fear those with disabilities or differences because they don’t want to “catch” what they see. As parents and caregivers, we can help children understand that differences and disabilities are not illnesses and cannot be caught like a virus. JULY/AUGUST 2021

Personal Stories

I myself was born with a limb difference that affects both of my hands, while it does not hinder my daily life other than not being able to get a manicure, having sloppy handwriting, or not being able to easily find gloves that fit, I did have to undergo numerous surgeries and growing up it was often the first thing peers noticed about me. I was severely bullied in school but fortunately for me, several members of my family have the same condition so I had a large support system to help navigate the issues that arose. As an adult I use my own experience now to help my children understand that our differences do not define us, our words, our outlook, our personality, and our character do! Ashlyn Barrett is 11 years old. She also has Type 1 Diabetes. She says “This means my pancreas can’t produce insulin anymore so I have to have shots or use an insulin pump.” When asked about her pump she says, “My omnipod has a ton of cool features. To dose for food all I have to do is just put in how many carbs my food has and what my blood sugar is and it will calculate the amount of insulin I need. My pump also pumps insulin regularly throughout the day to keep my blood sugar stable. When my blood sugar goes low, I can suspend the insulin that goes in regularly so it doesn’t play a factor in making my blood sugar go lower.” Ashlyn says that she does not mind when people are curious and encourages them to ask questions as long they do so in a way that is kind and respectful. She does wish that more people were educated on what Type 1 Diabetes really is and what it is like for those living with it. She says she often gets frustrated when the disease is stereotyped or when people spread misinformation. All things considered she considers herself very lucky saying “my disease doesn’t impact my childhood because of the advanced technology that has been invented.” Laura Crowley Anderson became disabled as an adult after a catastrophic fall. She now suffers from complex regional pain syndrome which affects her quality of life in a myriad of ways. She found it shocking just how much insurance will not cover in terms of treatment and adaptable equipment. While she has found ways to do the things she still enjoys such as working out with a personal trainer and physical exercise that she has long enjoyed, she does find that some of her favorite

locations she enjoyed frequenting pre-disability, such as the historic streets of downtown Annapolis are nearly impossible to navigate with a walker. Despite the chronic pain and hindrances she finds joy wherever she can saying “I listen to my body and I still find ways of doing movement to the best of my ability. In a way, my disability has made me stronger. My life has gotten smaller, my circle more defined, but the quality of my friendships and relationships is the best it has ever been.” Laura says that she does feel some pangs of sadness that her disability caused her to miss out on some of the major milestones in her children’s lives. She says that she does wish more people took time to reflect on what it is like for those who live with chronic pain and disabilities. “I don’t know” she says, “sometimes I just feel like I don’t quite fit into the world anymore.” She encourages us all to pause and think about our friends and neighbors who are living with disabilities. “When you invite people to do things or

plan events or outings, start with the basics. Think about the logistics involved and try to be inclusive and accessible to those around you with disabilities.”

Working with Individuals with Differences or Disabilities

When working with individuals who are living with disabilities or differences it is important to focus on their strengths and to view them as unique individuals with autonomy and self worth, just as we would with anyone else. Jenn Miltenberger is a Direct Support Professional for an agency serving adults with Traumatic Brain Injuries. One of the greatest lessons she has learned while working with this population is to always show empathy. “I have not been in their shoes and I can’t possibly understand what my clients have gone through but I am here to listen.” Listening is one of the greatest signs of respect Jenn can show to her clients. “These individuals strive to be a part of the community,” she says. “They enjoy being talked to and are encouraged to advocate for themselves. One of the challenges these individuals often face is people not talking to them directly or talking to them in higher tones like they’re children. I encourage my clients to speak up for themselves because they can.” She says that many people tend to be shy around people with disabilities and she encourages us all to reach out, to listen, to ask questions, to say hello, and to get involved. “My clients love attention just like many people. They enjoy when people notice them. They’re usually open to telling you their life stories and what they want for the future.” Jenn reminds us that everyone’s experience with a disability is different and we need to honor their individuality and their preferences. “Many of my clients had a whole life prior to their injury or accident, and a lot of that gets taken from them. I have a client who likes to talk about what he did “before.” I honor those conversations. She says that no injury is alike. “Depending on what part of the brain has been injured, there can be an assortment of different health issues. I have clients who just have physical disabilities, clients with behavioral issues, and some who have memory impairments. All of the care has to be very person-centered.”

Disabilities and Differences in Schools

Many children are first exposed to peers living with disabilities and differences when they begin attending school. It is important that we help our children understand that all of our peers are worthy of kindness, compassion, respect, and inclusion. Lisa Schmidt is a local elementary special education teacher in Anne Arundel County. She attended George Washington University where she received her master›s degree in Special Education with a focus on emotional and behavioral disabilities. She says that the role of a special educator is to find ways to make school accessible for each student which often means utilizing different methods for each student.

Lisa says that many of the challenges that children with special needs face in school are the same types of academic challenges experienced by their peers. “They can have academic, communication, social and emotional challenges. As a teacher in an elementary school one of the biggest challenges is learning about a student’s strengths and needs. Many children aren't identified with special needs or disabilities until they reach school age. Parents and teachers are the students' advocates to ensure their needs are identified.” Lisa encourages parents to talk openly with their children about disabilities and to lead by example. “Children and adults are curious about other people and asking questions about others helps us learn about our similarities and differences. The biggest thing I wish everyone would understand is that students with special needs are all individuals. There is no one size fits all solution to any child or challenge.”

Compassionate Curiosity and Authentic Inclusion

One important thing to remember when interacting with others is that not all differences, health conditions, and disabilities are visible. It is often impossible to tell simply by looking at someone to know for a fact if they are living with some sort of difference or disability. Hearing impairments, learning differences, intellectual disabilities, personality disorders, spectrum disorders, and other conditions are not visible. This is why we should always make an effort to get to know those around us and to understand what our friends, peers, neighbors, and community members are experiencing or living with on a daily basis. When it comes to visible disabilities, one of the most important things to remember is that people are people regardless of their differences or levels of ability and we should strive to treat everyone we meet with dignity and respect. Lack of knowledge or understanding is nothing to be ashamed of. Curiosity, especially in children should never be diminished. Asking questions in a respectful manner and approaching questions about disabilities from a place of compassionate curiosity helps ensure that we seek knowledge and understanding from others in a way that is respectful and considerate rather than leaving them feeling as though they are a spectacle or mere object of interest and intrigue. We must all strive to be inclusive, understanding, and compassionate towards all we meet. JULY/AUGUST 2021

ocializing presents a little bit of a dilemma this summer. Although moms, dads, grandparents, and maybe even older siblings have had a chance to get the COVID-19 vaccine for months now, many small children remain vulnerable to the coronavirus. And although serious symptoms aren’t common for little ones, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that it’s still possible for kids to get seriously sick. (In fact, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 3.9 million American children have tested positive for COVID-19 as of mid-May 2021). Just because your kids are unvaccinated doesn’t mean this summer has to be boring. The CDC lists outdoor playdates — where there’s plenty of airflow and kids can maintain a safe 6 feet from one another — as an activity that carries only medium risk, as opposed to high-risk activities like indoor playdates. So let this be the summer of the ultimate outdoor hangout! Make a point of holding these kinds of celebrations often throughout the

summer, potentially once or twice a week depending on how elaborate you want to make the gathering. To reduce the burden of hosting on any one household, you could even rotate and have a get-together at a different home within the friend group every time.

don’t even have to touch any of the same gear. On the rare occasion you do have to touch someone else’s stuff (such as the pallino — the smaller ball you use as a target in bocce), you can simply reach for the hand sanitizer.

sure the night is memorable:

An outdoor movie is easier than you think! All you need is a large screen (even a solid white bedsheet stretched taut and pinned up to a wall will do the trick) plus a projector and speakers that can hook up to whatever device you’re using to stream the movie. Have everyone bring their own picnic blankets or beach chairs to set up a comfortable distance apart from others, and once it starts to get dark, let the viewing commence!

Here are some great ways to make

Provide masks and sanitizer

Some kids might show up without a mask, so make sure you have at least a few new ones available that you can set out on a table. Companies like Oriental Trading (orientaltrading.com) offer bulk sales of children’s masks in fun patterns at reasonable prices. Have pump bottles of hand sanitizer out as well.

Break out the backyard games Cornhole, bocce ball, and croquet are all great activities that don’t require you to get within 6 feet of your opponents, and with a little bit of carefulness, you

Set up an outdoor movie.

Hire live entertainment.

This could potentially get a little pricier, but if you have the budget or if it’s a special occasion (such as a birthday),

stay inspired consider live entertainment in place of a movie screening. A clown, an illusionist, or even a kid-friendly band can perform while everyone watches from their socially distanced blanket or chair. The experience of watching the same live performance will be a great way to bond without needing to interact with one another up close.

Put out supplies for arts and crafts.

Pile a table with as many arts and craft supplies as you can — paint, markers, popsicle sticks, construction paper, glue sticks, glitter, scissors, and whatever else is available — and encourage the kids to get creative. They can take materials back to their socially distanced stations to work on their projects, then display the finished product for everyone to see at the end of the night. It will be a great way to conclude the party by giving everyone a chance to walk around and see what their friends have been working on.

Feel free to serve food, but do it in a contact-free way. Not only is it COVID-safe, but having individually packaged, some-assemblyrequired snacks or meals are way more fun for kids. They’ll love picking up plastic baggies of crackers or chips, individually wrapped string cheese, single-serve cups of yogurt or fruit, or whatever else you put out. If you want to create a heartier snack or even a full meal, consider packing a brown paper bag for each guest. Don’t want to go to the trouble of portioning out meals? See whether you can arrange to have a food truck stop by your neighborhood. Check out websites like foodtrucksin. com or roaminghunger.com to find a food truck available near you. Remember — you’re limited only by your own creativity! Some activities might prove to be a hit with the kids, while others might need to be replaced when you hold your next get-together. Have fun and stay safe!
