Empowering Summer Adventures

Summer is my favorite time of the year. Even as a kid I loved the summer. There was more time to explore and test new skills. With a friend or two, we would explore the neighborhood, play games, ride our bikes, and even had our own little business selling blackberries.

As a mom, I tried to give my kids the same freedom as long as they followed the simple house rules that we had all agreed to. They had to tell me where they were going, when they would be home, and who else would be with them. And never leave the house without telling me.

It’s not always easy to let them out of sight, but I’ve learned that it’s better to let kids make mistakes when you are close by and can help them out of a jam. They’re going to make mistakes. We all do. That’s how we learn. That’s also how we discover new things and maybe even find a life-long passion.

So, let go if you can. Start small. Let your kids play in the mud in your backyard, or on your deck. A hose will wash away the dirt. Help them learn to observe their surroundings and see that they are only a small part of something much bigger.

Volunteer, get a job, get out of the house. Learning doesn’t stop when school is out. Give your children the opportunity to try new things and enjoy free time during the summer.

Operation Sea Change

A Relief Effort by Nickelodeon's Spongebob SquarePants

Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore has announced a partnership with Paramount and Nickelodeon in which the nonprofit, specifically its internationally acclaimed family of solar-powered interceptors, known as Trash Wheels, will benefit from a brand-new, multiyear global ocean conservation and sustainability initiative called SpongeBob

SquarePants: Operation Sea Change. In celebration of World Oceans Day, Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore unveiled a SpongeBob SquarePants branded trash wheel, which will leverage the reach of the globally beloved undersea dweller to help raise awareness about ocean plastic pollution.

“We’re thrilled that the Mr. Trash Wheel family -- both his impact and innovation -- resonated with Nickelodeon and

Paramount. This adoption of Baltimore’s fourth Trash Wheel, Gwynnda the Good Wheel of the West, will fund the removal of over 500,000 pounds of trash and debris while educating children and families across the world about ocean pollution and how to stop it,” said Adam Lindquist, vice president of the Healthy Harbor Initiative at the Waterfront Partnership.

By funding cleanup projects like Gwynnda the Good Wheel of the West, the initiative aims to help protect the ocean from plastic pollution and biodiversity loss by helping to remove and divert five million pounds of ocean plastic over the next four years. SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Sea Change will sponsor trash collection activities through 2023 for Gwynnda the Good Wheel of the West. Other nonprofit partners include Coral Restoration Foundation, Plastics Ocean International, Surfers Against Sewage and WORK.

Mr. Trash Wheel and Professor Trash Wheel have been adopted by Baltimorebased Pompeian Olive Oil since 2021. Partnerships like this provide the funds necessary for the organization to keep Baltimore's beloved trash wheels in motion and help the organization continue to educate Baltimore City residents and visitors about its programs and mission to restore and protect the Baltimore Harbor.

Since 2014, Mr. Trash Wheel and three other Baltimore-based wheels, have collected over 2,362.23 tons of trash, including a guitar, a snake, almost 2 million plastic bottles, and more, from entering Baltimore’s waterways and eventually the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The wheels have gained an international following for their anthropomorphic personalities on social media.

Mr. Trash Wheel and his trash wheel family are one part of the Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative, which provides a roadmap for cleaning up Baltimore’s Harbor and the waterways leading to the Harbor. A clean Harbor and clean streams will provide opportunities for residents and area families to enjoy clean water in their neighborhoods. Greener and cleaner neighborhoods will make Baltimore City and Baltimore County more livable for all our citizens. For more information, visit healthyharbor.org.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Park Spotlight

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a small park, only 8.5 acres, but it is packed full of wonderous things. It’s an oasis of open space filled with ponds and water flowers adjacent to the Anacostia River. The longest trail is only .5 miles and flat, so everyone can enjoy the park, but don’t let the small size hold you back, you can spend a day observing everything within the park.

The Nacotchtank people were the original residents living along the Anacostia. By 1921 there was a water garden operating as a commercial enterprise where Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is now located. Dredging of the Anacostia threatened the gardens until finally in 1938 Congress allocated $15,000 to purchase the land and establish the park.

More than forty ponds dot the park and they are filled with beautiful lily and lotus flowers. Paths surround the ponds allowing visitors to closely view the flowers. A boardwalk,

with overlooks, leads to marshes surrounding the ponds. Birds are very happy living around the park. Stand or sit still for a few minutes and you will observe a many different birds. We saw a Great Blue Heron, Field Oriole, Red-winged Black Bird and lots of other species. Rangers can be found walking the paths and are happy to show you points of interest. Check the website for regularly scheduled bird walks, painting classes, and volunteer cleanups.

There’s a .25 mile dirt path that leads to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, 12 miles of paved paths that wind through the woods, and along the river. It’s great for biking and walking. Dogs are allowed on a leash. There’s a great spot where the trail from Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens intersects with Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to sit along the banks of the Anacostia and watch kayakers.

The 2023 Lotus & Water Lily Festival is scheduled for July 15-22, when the flowers will be in peak bloom. Familyfriendly activities are planned.

Everything You Need To Know

We all want to look and feel our best. There are non-invasive cosmetics procedures to suit just about everyone. Here’s everything you need to know, whether you are a longtime fan of Botox, or a complete newbie to the realm of seemingly endless cosmetic options. The DMV has a host of talented professionals who are ready to guide you every step of the way. We spoke to local businesses to gain insight and understanding of the four most popular non-invasive or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

Melanie Erb Shushan, CRNP is the owner of Annapolis Aesthetics, Scott R. Melamed is the President ProMD Health, and Ali Weiss, FNPBC, is the founder of Euna Aesthetics, while Kelsey McCleary is in charge of Euna’s Patient Care.

For this article, we took a deep dive into some of the most popular non-surgical procedures, fillers, injectables, chemical peels, and skin resurfacing.

FILLERS

Fillers are used to fill out features, creating a smoother and fuller appearance on the face by reducing wrinkles and restoring volume. Commonly made of hyaluronic acid, they can be injected in areas like the cheeks, lips, and more. Fillers are also applicable to hands, elbows, knees, and temples.

What to expect.

The procedure is quick, typically lasting less than an hour, and is relatively painless. Topical numbing agents are used for comfort. Clients can expect long-lasting results with minimal downtime, although there may be 1-3 days of tenderness and bruising. While the procedure itself is often painless, the sound of filler deployment can startle some individuals. Post-procedure, clients may experience fullness, residual numbing, and mild soreness for about a day.

Immediately after the procedure, clients typically see about 80% of the result, with the full effect visible within two weeks. The duration of results varies but generally lasts around a year, ranging from nine months to two years. Touch-up procedures are available at a lower cost. Fillers are considered safe, with any reactions stemming from the procedure rather than the products used. Swelling or bruising may occur temporarily. Results from fillers can last between six and eighteen months.

What will it cost?

Regarding cost, the price range for standard fillers is between $500 and $800, depending on the amount required (half-syringe or full-syringe). Larger areas like the jawline may require multiple syringes. An alternative option is SCULPTRA, which costs $800 per vial and utilizes poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to gradually restore facial volume over three to six months. The effects of SCULPTRA can last up to five years, with the recommended dosage being one vial per decade of life.

Average pricing for fillers ranges from $550 to $900 according to Scott. Melanie prices procedures by the syringe, with the first syringe costing $700 and additional syringes priced at $600, discussed during a consultation to determine treatment goals.

INJECTABLES

Injectables, such as Botox, Dysport, and Taxify, are neurotoxins that are injected into specific areas to block nerves, relax muscles, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These procedures are safe, noninvasive, and offer significant results without any downtime.

What to expect.

According to Scott, these products are essentially the same compound, and they are administered through small injections that are generally painless. While the full effect may take several days to over a week to become noticeable, clients typically see immediate and natural-looking results on the day of the procedure. It's important to note that the results usually start to set in after three to five days, with the final outcome visible after fourteen days. The effects of injectables generally last three to four months.

Melanie compares the sensation of the injections to the slight pinch felt while tweezing eyebrows. She uses a bit of ice on the area beforehand, instructs clients to close their eyes, and the procedure is over quickly.

What will it cost?

As for cost, Euna quotes around $14 per unit for these procedures, with the general range being between $12 and $17. Scott mentions that the cost varies depending on the procedure and the number of units required, with patients typically paying anywhere from $149 to $600. Melanie states that clients can expect to pay approximately $14 per unit. The number of units needed varies based on factors like age and desired muscle movement reduction. For example, a 25-year-old might require around 20 units, while a 45-year-old might need 50 units. The amount of muscle movement to be decreased determines the dosage, allowing clients to choose between a more natural look with some mobility or complete immobility of the muscle.

SKIN RESURFACING

Skin resurfacing encompasses procedures such as lasers and micro-needling that provide lasting results, despite being slightly more invasive than other treatments. These procedures offer minimal downtime and recovery. They effectively address various skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, sun damage, age spots, rosacea, uneven skin tone, acne scarring, blood vessels, and hyperpigmentation.

The extent of downtime and recovery depends on the chosen procedure. Euna provides an explanation for laser treatment, comparing partially ablative lasers to aerating the lawn, while fully ablative lasers are likened to mowing the lawn. Scott mentions that during these procedures, individuals might experience mild pressure, tension, warmth, and mild heat from the device. By day three, spots and blemishes may darken before sloughing off, revealing new, radiant skin by day five.

Micro-needling works differently, as tiny needles create micro-channels in the skin, triggering the body's immune response and promoting new tissue formation with collagen. While resurfacing procedures cause trauma to the top layer of skin, they do not completely damage it. This trauma signals the body to supply nutrients for healing and new growth. To maintain results, resurfacing procedures are typically recommended every six months. For fine lines and wrinkles, a series of microneedling treatments is often preferred. Fractional resurfacing, a less invasive laser procedure, typically requires 3 to 5 sessions every 2 to 6 weeks for optimal results.

What will it cost?

Regarding cost, Euna prices their HALO laser procedure at $1,500, while their RF microneedling offerings range from $600 to $1,000 or more. Scott estimates resurfacing procedures to range from $300 to $1,000. Melanie suggests that micro-needling costs around $450 to $750, and laser resurfacing ranges from $400 to $900, depending on the specific treatment.

CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical peels are a minimally invasive and beginner-friendly cosmetic procedure, primarily aimed at improving the appearance of the skin on the face and neck. During the treatment, a chemical solution is topically applied to the skin, resulting in exfoliation and subsequent peeling and flaking as new skin emerges. Chemical peels are effective in treating sun damage, acne scars, and age spots.

What to expect.

Even individuals with sensitive skin can be suitable candidates for chemical peels, as Euna suggests. Regular chemical peel treatments can address various skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, texture, melasma, tone, and aging. Results typically become noticeable around day two and continue to improve over two weeks. However, Scott emphasizes that skincare maintenance, including the regular use of sunscreen and moisturizers, significantly influences the longevity of results. While some individuals can enjoy results for up to six months, many consider chemical peels as a quarterly treatment.

The side effects of chemical peels are generally minimal. Melanie mentions that clients may experience mild tingling but should not feel any discomfort. Depending on the chosen treatment, peeling can range from none at all to more intense peeling lasting several days.

What will it cost?

At Euna, chemical peel services are priced based on the solution's strength, ranging from mild (Level 1) to aggressive (Level 3), with prices between $185 and $205. ReveSkin Chemical Peels, described as an advanced treatment similar to a laser, offer a price range of $450 to $800. ProMD's pricing falls within the range of $150 to $300, depending on the selected treatment. Melanie's clients can expect to pay approximately $190 to $350 for chemical peel treatments.

Passport Tips

Follow These Steps

The busy summer travel season is here, and the U.S. Department of State encourages travelers to apply for or renew their passports as soon as possible. Our tips will help you prepare for that process.

Do I Need a Passport?

In general, if you are planning to travel to another country, you will need a passport. Exceptions are rare, particularly for adults. You may renew your passport by mail if your previous, undamaged passport was a 10-year (full validity) passport issued within the last 15 years, was not reported lost or stolen, and you have it available to submit with your renewal application. Otherwise, you must apply for or renew your passport in person.

Passport Book or Passport Card?

Passport cards can't be used for international air travel. U.S. citizens may use passport cards for land or sea travel back to the U.S. from Caribbean nations, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. For most international travelers, a passport book is the better choice.

Find a Passport Acceptance Facility

Travelers applying for a new passport or renewing a passport in person must go to a passport acceptance facility. The State Department offers a search tool to help you find acceptance

facilities. Some acceptance facilities accept walk-in applicants, but most require appointments. If you need to have a passport photo taken, consider choosing an acceptance facility that offers photo services.

In Maryland, most passport acceptance facilities are located in post offices, but some are located in courthouses, public libraries, and city halls. You can select any acceptance facility that offers the hours and services you need.

How Much Will My Passport Cost?

There are two components to passport fees, the application fee and the execution fee (first-time applicants and minors only). Additional charges apply for expedited processing ($60) and Priority Mail Express Delivery ($19.53, U.S. addresses only).

The execution fee, currently $35, is paid to the acceptance facility. All other fees are paid to the State Department. Currently, a 10-year adult passport book costs $130 plus the execution fee and any additional charges, while a minor (child under 16) 5-year passport book is $100 plus the execution fee and additional charges. Passport cards are cheaper. The State Department's Passport Fees Chart shows the details. Passport Processing and Mailing Times

Current passport processing times are 10-13 weeks for regular processing and 7-9 weeks for expedited processing. Note that these times do not include mailing times to/from the State Department. Allow four weeks for mailing. Paying for Priority Mail Express Delivery (1-2 days) will reduce your passport mailing time by almost two weeks.

Can I Renew My Passport Online?

No. The State Department created a pilot program for online passport renewal, but that program is on hold.

Applying For Your Passport

Adult first-time applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, an approved identification document, photocopies of the ID and citizenship document, a completed, unsigned form DS-11, a passport photo, a check or money order for application and special services fees, and a check, money order, or facility-approved means of payment for the execution fee.

Adults renewing their passports by mail must provide their most recent, fully valid, undamaged passport (issued within the last 15 years), certified documentation of name change (if applicable), a passport photo, a completed, unsigned form DS-82, and a check or money order for application and special services fees.

A child aged 16 or 17 typically must apply in person. The applicant must provide all documents mentioned in "Adult first-time applicants," above. The applicant must also show that at least one legal parent or legal guardian knows about the passport application by bringing that parent to the application appointment or providing a signed note from a legal parent or legal guardian.

The applicant must also provide a photocopy of the parent or guardian's ID. In some cases, the letter from a parent or guardian must be notarized.

If a legal parent or legal guardian is paying the application fee by check or money order, that payment is proof of parental awareness.

A child under 16 must bring all documents outlined in "Adult first-time applicants," above. A document showing the child's parental relationship must be provided (original or certified copy of a birth certificate, adoption decree, or divorce/ custody decree). Both parents must consent to the child's passport application, typically by accompanying the child to the application appointment. If one parent cannot attend, the applicant must provide a notarized Form DS-3053 and a photocopy.

Passport Photos

You must submit one 2-by-2-inch color photograph. The photo must be less than six months old. Do not wear glasses, a uniform, or camouflage. Keep your facial expression neutral. Hat-wearers must provide a letter explaining that the hat is worn for religious or medical reasons.

Special Circumstances

If you need a passport for urgent or life-or-death emergency travel, call the State Department to see if you qualify for an appointment at a passport agency or center (most likely the Washington Passport Agency). For life-or-death emergency travel, you must obtain appropriate documentation before calling for an appointment.

Persons owing $2,500 or more in child support must pay support owed before applying for a passport.

Applicants who cannot provide primary evidence of U.S. citizenship must provide secondary evidence of citizenship. The requirements are specific and complex; contact the State Department's U.S. Passports contact center for assistance.

Important Tips and Reminders

• If you are renewing your passport by mail, send your application package by U. S. Mail only.

• You will need two forms of ID and photocopies of both if you apply for your passport in person at an out-of-state location.

• Photocopies must be one-sided black and white copies on 8.5-by-11-inch white paper.

• You may pay for your passport application by check or money order ONLY. Your passport acceptance facility may accept other forms of payment for the execution fee.

Soar to New Heights Maryland's Thrilling Air and Space Events Await This Summer

Take flight this summer at some of Maryland’s most exciting air and space events. From brand-new exhibits to annual traditions, there are plenty of sky-high activities to enjoy this summer with the whole family.

If you’re looking to experience aviation discovery and history, visit the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum, located in Middle River. For over three decades, the Maryland Aviation Museum has preserved and shared Maryland's aerospace history with the community. They feature real life-size aircraft, giving visitors an exciting, up close and personal experience.

Browse the models and artifacts within the museum or attend one of the many special events hosted throughout

the year.

There are two Family Fun Days being held this summer, the July event with an airplane theme and a rocket theme in August. Kids can enjoy fun activities through workshops and museum exhibits.

On July 8, the Aviation Museum will be participating in the Maryland Aviation Festival at the College Park Aviation Museum. Admission is free and visitors can enjoy aviation displays from all over the state.

The Maryland Aviation Museum is a non-profit organization that hopes to “inspire people of all ages by delivering experiences that nurture and accelerate aerospace dreams.”

Patuxent (PAX) River Naval Air Museum is another location, further

south in Lexington Park, with real aircraft on display that visitors can walk up to and touch. There are 25 Navy and Marine Corps aircraft on display. This non-profit organization is heavily focused on preservation, research and testing, and most of the display models are test aircraft and prototypes. The museum exhibits are also unique, offering a wide array of collections and hugely popular flight simulators.

Join PAX River Air Museum on September 16 for their 7th Annual Wheels and Wings Car Show. This popular event is a Southern Maryland favorite that features show cars right alongside the aircraft for the day.

Vendors, food trucks, and activities are open to visitors and an Award Show is presented for the participating car

registrants.

Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum is a timeless fan favorite. If you haven’t been to this classic Washington D.C. destination yet, make this your summer to finally explore. This year, there are some new additions on display as part of a multi-year long renovation that will eventually showcase 23 new exhibitions.

Just opened in 2022, visitors are now enjoying eight new exhibits at the museum. Early Flight explores the first decade of flight in America in the early 1900s. America by Air showcases the history of commercial aircraft, from mail to passenger liners. Destination Moon shows visitors the technologies and resources that helped humans walk on the moon. Nation of Speed shares how technology and America’s need for speed, have shaped our culture. A winning Indy 500 race car is also on display. The Wright Brothers & The Invention of the Aerial Age brings the invention of the first airplane to life, featuring the iconic 1903 Wright Flyer. The Kenneth C. Griffin Exploring the Planets Gallery shares the science and history behind our solar system. The Thomas W. Haas We All Fly exhibit recognizes the impact of general aviation on society. New aircraft are also on display in this gallery. One World Connected is the final new installment currently open to visitors. This exhibit details how the invention and growth of aviation have impacted and increased human connection and transportation.

Take to the skies with a completely different means of transportation at the Chesapeake Bay Balloon Festival. Located at Cedar Lane Park in Bel Air, guests can experience over 30 largerthan-life hot air balloons on display from August 4-6.

This family event includes a variety of activities, including hot air balloon rides (tethered and fly-away) and night glow, bounce houses, face painting, games, and musical entertainment on the main stage. There will be food trucks and other food vendors also participating, including local wineries and breweries. An artists' village showcases crafts for sale and on display from various artists.

Maryland's Historic Train Adventures for a Memorable Summer

Let off some steam this summer at one of your local railway attractions. Outside of the metro, Maryland offers some fun and historic train experiences that are sure to start the summer right on track.

B&O Railroad Museum is a state treasure and a must-see for local families. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is a nationally registered historic landmark. Home to America’s first commercial railroad, it was affectionately named “the birthplace of American Railroading.” www.borail.org

B&O Railroad Museum is located in Baltimore and offers a fun and educational experience for all ages. The museum’s expansive collection of railroad artifacts is the oldest in the world. Dedicated to education, the museum provides field trip opportunities and many youth programs for students to explore the history of railroading in an engaging way. Of course, a visit would not be

complete without a train ride on America’s very first mile of commercial railroad. Guided tours are also available on a regular basis. Special events are hosted throughout the year. This summer, visitors can enjoy Christmas in July, a one-weekend-only early holiday celebration at the railroad.

Children ages 7-13 can also participate in the B&O Summer Camp series to learn about the history and science of the railroad. There are four week-long camp sessions running in June, July, and August and admission is free, but spots fill up fast. Camps will feature sensory-friendly activities for a more inclusive experience.

Bid farewell to summer during the Labor Day weekend Workin’ on the Railroad event, honoring the many railroad workers who created the B&O history through their incredible labor. Full event scheduling is yet to be released; however, the museum will host special programming throughout the weekend.

Admission is free for museum members, active-duty military, police, first responders, and Maryland teachers. Various discounts are also provided. Further southeast, you’ll find Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum. At the turn of the 20th century, Chesapeake Beach Railway opened as a means to connect the beachside resort town to Washington D.C. The Chesapeake Beach Railway company created the resort as a leisure destination and then the railway as its connector to the city right on the heels of the Civil War.

Visitors of the museum can see various exhibits that showcase the growth of Chesapeake Beach and the story of how the railroad company shaped the town. The original railway depot was built in 1898 and is now the location of the museum.

Throughout the month of July, kids can experience the Railway Museum Children’s program. These summer programs offer fun activities for kids to learn about the museum’s history. Admission is free.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic small-town train experience, look no further than Walkersville Southern Railroad. Located just north of Frederick in a charming rural town, Walkersville Southern Railroad will take you on a scenic trip to the past. Renovation and restoration are what keep the rich history here alive. wsrr.org/ws/

The train station was built by Pennsylvania Railroad in 1827 and many of the original structures are still present. As you ride in a vintage passenger car from the 1920s or an open-air flatcar, you will pass beautiful farmland, and a restored century-old lime kiln and cross over the Monocacy River. On select weekends, a fully functioning coal-fired steam engine will power your ride, complete with the sounds and smells of a real steam train!

Chart Your Course

Experience the Best of Maryland's Maritime Attractions this Summer

Make a splash this summer with a visit to one of Maryland’s many maritime adventures. Don’t feel like getting wet? There are plenty of marine museums and boat rides that offer the perfect balance of water and sunshine to pack your day with fun and learning.

Central to the DMV region in Washington D.C., you will find the first mile of the famous C&O Canal. This historic landmark has been restored by Georgetown Heritage, to take guests on a special ride back in time. georgetownheritage.org

In the mid-1800s, the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal spanned over 184 miles to Cumberland, MD. It was originally used to transport products and passengers along the Potomac River and ran for almost a century. The

canal degraded significantly over years of neglect until it was named a National Historic Park in 1971. Since then, many restoration projects have taken place to revive the canal for use once more. Due to budget cuts, Georgetown Heritage relies heavily on donations to help with restoration needs.

The newest Canal boat was created as a replica of the originals that operated in the late-1800s. Georgetown Heritage offers boat tours on board this modern recreation. The tours take guests along the first mile of the canal and through the lift locks while learning about its history along the way.

Special events are sometimes offered, including Black History themed boat tours in honor of Juneteenth. This tour will highlight the canal’s role in aiding in escape from slavery and AfricanAmerican contributions to our National

Anthem.

Regular boat tours run through July 2 with new dates available at a later time. School programs are also offered for students through 12th grade.

Calvert Marine Museum is another popular maritime excursion for families. Located in Solomons, MD, the museum offers unique exhibits both indoors and outdoors, to teach visitors about the natural environment and history of the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to museum exhibits, visitors can explore a touch tank, marsh walk, the Drum Point Lighthouse (sometimes with its own guided tours), animal feedings, and on weekends, row and pedal boats. Toy Boatbuilding is also a tradition at the museum for over 30 years. Guests ages 5 and above are invited to build wooden boats with their museum admission on select dates. There are a number of familyfriendly activities and events offered throughout the summer. Youth programs with story time and naturethemed learning activities are a great way to teach kids about the museum and its exhibits. Sea Squirts (ages 18 months – 3 years) and Little Minnows (ages 3-5) feature music, crafts, and stories and run throughout the year. The Fossil Field Experience runs through September 2 and invites visitors ages 8 and above, to learn and hunt for fossils at Cove Point Beach. Pre-registration is required. The museum owns two wooden boats that provide public cruises to guests on a regular basis. A special 4th of July cruise will also be available, featuring fantastic views of the Solomons fireworks.

Sharkfest is one of the museum’s popular annual events, returning this year on July 8. Sharks are the theme of the day and visitors can view them up close in the nature pavilion. Note that strollers are not permitted during this event due to space limitations. In partnership with the Arts Council of Calvert County, Calvert Marine Museum will sponsor a Maritime Arts and Artifacts Arts Show. In addition

to visiting the museum, guests will learn about Chesapeake Bay culture through unique artistic interpretations by local artists.

As part of their Waterside Music Series, recording artist, Lee Brice will perform on July 27 at their outdoor pavilion. Other visiting performing artists this summer will include Brett Young, Ziggy Marley and ATC, a tribute to ABBA.

Another fun boating experience can be found with Watermark Cruises. Serving the Baltimore and Annapolis areas, Watermark provides public cruises and water taxis along the Chesapeake Bay. Founded in 1972 as Chesapeake Marine Tours, by a local boat lover offering a simple sightseeing tour of the Bay. The company has grown immensely over the years and still pays tribute to the first sightseeing tour with an appropriately named cruise, “That Day on the Bay.”

There are many special events taking place throughout the year.

A few of the most popular summer offerings include the 4th of July Fireworks Cruise, available in Annapolis and Baltimore, and TGIF Live Music cruises which run on Friday nights in Annapolis towards the end of the season.

In Annapolis, the Bay Lighthouses Cruise takes passengers past three lighthouses: Sandy Point Shoal, Baltimore Harbor, and Thomas Point. This tour is 3.5 hours long with a full bar of drinks available for purchase. The 9th annual Dog Days of Summer cruise will soon be available for purchase. This dog-friendly cruise benefits the Anne Arundel County SPCA. The 2023 date has yet to be announced.
