Support Season

I

t is November and we have been enduring this pandemic for eight months now. With people out of work, the holidays coming and the cold weather settling in, it has never been more important to support our community. And we are here to do just that. In this combined November and December issue we are highlighting ways to support local businesses, community volunteer efforts, entrepreneurial kids, and of course, you. First, let’s give a supportive shoutout to the amazing young entrepreneurs featured on page 16. These kids have taken an idea and ran with it, creating businesses from their hobbies and making a name for themselves, even at a young age. Kids can do pretty much anything they set their minds to, and these kids are a testament to that. Next, if you’re looking for ways to help your community during the holidays, head to page 10, where you can find ways to give back with food, clothing and toy drives, meal preparation

and deliveries and more ways to volunteer locally. Finally, as you get a jump on your holiday shopping to avoid shipping delays and shopping in person, our holiday gift guide (page 12) supports Black-owned businesses, showcasing amazing gift ideas from local and regional businesses. Plus we’ve got a roundup of cool subscription boxes for kids on page 24. They’re the gift that keeps on giving! As we move into December, you can find all of our Holiday fun at ChesapeakeFamily.com, including Santa sightings, Christmas tree farms, holiday lights displays, gift markets and our annual Holiday Countdown. We hope you have a happy and healthy holiday season!

military family moves into a new neighborhood. The second day, when leaving a store, someone rolls down their window and yells the N-word at them.* A mother is heartbroken when her bi-racial son is called a racial slur by a teacher and the lack of response by the school that followed.* In addition to sharing the injustice of their personal experience with racism, these families have another thing in common—they all live in Pasadena, Maryland. in recent years, but locally in Anne Arundel County, Pasadena has found itself under increased scrutiny. According to the State of Maryland Hate Bias Report, of all 23 counties in Maryland and Baltimore City, four (Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Montgomery and Howard) make up 76.9% of all hate bias reporting in 2018. Pasadena (21122) had the highest reports. But for all of the recent negativity, It is important to acknowledge there are people trying to bring the community together. About the same time as the release of the 2018 Hate Bias Report, the Pasadena community was

recovering from a racial incident at Northeast High School. In November 2019, Pasadena residents Debi and John Jasen decided to try to bridge the divide by creating OnePasadena. Initially OnePasadena started as a Facebook group. “Our first few members were good friends who were willing to work towards racial justice and peace in Pasadena,” John says. Today those few have grown to over 800 members working together for a positive change. “We hope to be a community resource to effect positive change, but centered and made up primarily of people in Pasadena,” John says. “We have groups within OnePasadena that include a book club, events organizers, a Pasadena kindness initiative, and Coming to the Table conversations about race and racism (see comingtothetable.org).” In November 2019, OnePasadena organized its first local demonstration in solidarity with students at Northeast High School, after a disturbing racist video was circulated through the student body. Since then members have stayed busy. OnePasadena has organized or participated in close to a dozen events in the past year, including testifying before the Anne Arundel County Board of Education. Jasen says many different people are drawn to the grassroots organization. “Its strength lies in its diversity with participants stemming from a variety of racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious groups, as well as from opposing political persuasions,” he says. “Our members include volunteers dedicated to anti-racism, people involved in our local schools who are tired of the racism, Pasadena people of color who have been subjected to racism in Pasadena, people with the deep-seated belief racism is just wrong, and people who want to learn more.” If you live in Pasadena and would like to help reduce racism and racial bias in the community, OnePasadena encourages you to see what they are all about and join at facebook.com/ onepasadena. —Joyce Heid

YOUTHREPRENEURS How today’s young people are pursuing entrepreneurism By Dylan Roche

T

here’s no rule that says you have to be an adult to launch your own business. While most teens and children are content to simply have hobbies, there are those among them who have found ways to market and monetize what they love to do. Are there challenges? Of course. Is it rewarding? Very much so—not only in a financial sense but also in terms of education and experience. So, what does it take to be a young entrepreneur, and how can parents support one? Here’s what entrepreneurial teens in the Greater Annapolis area (and their parents) recommend when it comes to launching your own business.

important skill I’ve learned is the importance of a business plan, to find that equation that accounts for every cost of a business,” he says. “It was hard to figure out good pricing when I was upgrading materials constantly because it was difficult to project the amount of jobs I was going to make, how long my equipment would last, and what unexpected costs I’d have to pay for along the way.” THE SAME BUSINESS SKILLS THAT MATTER FOR ADULTS MATTER FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. Professionalism comes naturally to some kids. This is one of the noteworthy qualities that Ellie Heath’s mother, Amy Heath, observes in her daughter. “She has a good foundation, a keen sense for business and understands the time involved to make a profit,” Heath says. “What makes me most proud is that she has friendly customer service skills and knows how to talk with a multitude of different types of personalities.” DON’T BE INTIMIDATED JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE YOUNG. Even elementary schoolers are old enough to tap into their leadership skills with the right encouragement. Kaleb Good’s mother, Latolya Foote, sees this when she assists her elementary-age son with his cookie business, Kaleb’s Kookies. “Kaleb is a natural-born CEO! He combined that with his love of music to establish Christian’s Hip-Hopcorn, a gourmet popcorn business he entered into the Annapolis Youth Entrepreneurship Fair in fall 2019. “Christian is a lover of music, people, and always willing to try new things,” says his mom Jasmine Carey Crowner. “So to be able to make something he also loves, popcorn, with a music theme and make people happy at the same time brings him joy.” HAVE A BUSINESS PLAN FROM THE START. When teenager Matthew Beagan established his T-shirt business, Fridays with Matthew, he invested in a screen printer to make shirts. But he realized that if he was going to cover the cost of his investment, it required some critical thinking. “I think the most NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

TAP INTO SKILLS YOU’VE BEEN DEVELOPING SINCE YOU WERE YOUNG. When teenager Ellie Heath established Three Blue Bunnies—a line of wearable art made from repurposed jean jackets—it was after years of developing her crafting and sewing skills. “My mom has always supported the arts and gave me the chance to be able to create from a young age,” she says. “At the middle school level, I was able to take three years of sewing classes, and that gave me the necessary skills I needed to sew jackets.”

Tooth Fairy Tale. She learned that any time she fell short it was always a learning experience. “A component of the product launch process can be trial and error, so learn to ‘fail forward’ and receive feedback on your products before you get too far into the process,” she says.

START SMALL BUT LET THINGS GROW. Teenager Jack Cohen launched his outdoor-inspired clothing brand, Little Cub Outfitters, after a school project was well received by those around him and he realized he could monetize his product. He started with a print-on-demand model that carried little risk but also had lower profit margin and longer fulfillment times. After a year, he got a little more serious. “I spent a ton of time designing quality designs, had my first shirt professionally manufactured and shipped to my house (so that I could fulfill everything myself), completely redesigned my website, and had professional photography done,” he says. TAP INTO YOUR NETWORK AND SEEK MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. Many of the teens (and their parents) agree that having a strong network opens up opportunities. Ellie Heath encourages teens to check with their local chamber of commerce or their school’s entrepreneurship program. Erica Szymanski talks with other vendors when she does events and develops relationships with the storeowners who carry her products.

PART-TIME JOBS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES HELP. As children grow into teenagers, they take on greater amounts of responsibility in their personal, academic, and professional endeavors. This ends up making them stronger business owners. Devon Beagan discovered this when she launched her line of tie-dyed, screen-printed clothes called ApparelbyDevon on Etsy. The entrepreneurial endeavor was hardly her first job, and she was already familiar with multitasking, marketing, and hard work. “I think I was able to develop these skills throughout my life in many different ways, but my love for clothes started when I first started modeling and working with clothing companies around the age of 14,” she says. BE ADAPTIVE AND READY FOR CHANGE. By the time she headed off to college, Erica Szymanski already had multiple business endeavors to her name. She had established Erica Morgan Designs, a line of car decals, magnets, and watercolor prints, and her products were carried by more than 40 boutiques across eight states. She had also published a children’s picture book, A Shark

into his leadership role,” she says. “When doing events, he controls the money, with help of course, and also promotes and sells his product. He can be a bit shy at times but that doesn’t normally last long.”

FIND WAYS TO MARKET YOURSELF. Jack Cohen says marketing can be a big challenge. “I think the problem is that most social media nowadays are so oversaturated,” he says, “which makes it hard for smaller businesses and creators to find success.” But it’s important not to give in to discouragement. Erica Szymanski found that every chance for self-promotion made her stronger. “I have refined my elevator pitch throughout the years,” she says. “But what helped me most was constantly throwing myself into the public speaking arena for practice.” PARENTS SHOULD BE READY TO BE INVOLVED. Even when youth entrepreneurs are doing most of the work themselves, there will still be times when parents will need to lend assistance. Tristan Lindsey, who runs Tristan’s XL Lemonade at only 7 years old, recalls a time when his stepdad had to save the day. “One night around Christmas time, we had a big order for our new Holiday Cheer lemonades, and the person we order our gallon jugs from sent us the wrong tops, so I couldn’t use his jugs,” he says. “It was really late at night and most of the stores were closed. My stepdad had to drive out and find gallon jugs that we could re-use for our lemonade orders.” Even teens and young adults need help occasionally, as Lisa Beagan found when her kids Matthew and Devon launched their businesses. “They both asked for my guidance with the financial aspect of profit and loss, as well as what was necessary to start a business and pay taxes,” she says. “At times, this was a family experience.”

“Without Key, I may have never stepped out of my shell and gained the confidence to engage in meaningful conversations with my teachers and other adult peers. I would have never learned how to be an independent thinker and a self-advocate. I would have never met the teachers who serve as inspirations for me. And, finally, without Key I would have never been taught what it means to learn for the love of learning. THE BIG READ 2020 Each year the National Endowment for the Arts spearheads a program called the NEA Big Read. This initiative aims “to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.” Since the program began in 2006, the National Endowment for the Arts has funded more than 1,400 NEA Big Read programs, providing more than $19 million to organizations nationwide. Locally, the Chesapeake Children’s Museum has been selected as one of many nonprofit organizations nationwide to present the NEA Big Read this year. This year’s Big Read book is Citizen: An American Lyric, a book-length poem by Claudia Rankine, which chronicles the microaggressions Black people face daily, and discusses larger incidents of discrimination, and violence against Black people in America. The museum is coordinating with community partners including Anne Arundel Community College, Anne Arundel Public Library, Asbury United Methodist Church, the BannekerDouglass Museum, Center of Help, and the City of Annapolis to present book discussions and activities around the book, as well as around racism, and ways to combat it in our community. Events run from mid-October to Mid-November, and include four talks with the author, race workshops for kids and adults, World Kindness Day activities on November 13, Community conversations, poetry workshops, and performances by Building Better People Productions called We Got It! A Show About Empathy. The courses feature interactive modules that can be completed from your home computer. For example, “Prepare with Pedro,” offers young children activities and games to introduce staying safe during emergencies and natural disasters. They are free to download and available at ready.gov/kids/prepare-with-pedro Similarly, “The Pillowcase Project,” an online workbook available to download, teaches children in grades 3 to 5 about safety, coping skills, natural hazards, and personal preparedness. But some material, like home and life skills, risks falling to the wayside as students focus more on core subjects. While you and your family are home more often this winter, and your kids are in need of non-screen activities, use this handy list with plenty of expert advice to break down which life skills kids should be learning at home.

FIRST AID BASICS

While nothing can replicate an in-person First Aid or CPR class, there are plenty of ways adults can help kids develop First Aid skills. Darlene Scriber, with the American Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region, says the organization’s online courses provide important skills that everyone should know. “Designed for parents and teachers, adults and teenagers, troop leaders, coaches, and more, our online first aid courses allow you to help those

Attending classes from home, being apart from peers, and uncertainty surrounding current events can be difficult for children. So checking in on your child’s emotional and mental health and helping them cope with the realities of today is crucial. Dr. Lauren Cashion, a psychiatrist with the Annapolis Child and Family Therapy Center, says mental health professionals are seeing increases in rates of anxiety and depression among young people and recognizes the many emotions they’re experiencing due to the pandemic. “Children and adolescents are struggling with the same anxieties regarding unknowns as adults,” Cashion says. “School-age children are lacking opportunities for social interactions that guide their development. Teens are missing connecting with peers, their greatest influencers. Kids feel lonely and frustrated—sometimes angry. They may struggle with self-regulation, resulting in uncharacteristic emotionality and outbursts.” On top of those troubles, Cashion says, “You then layer the complexities of school. Whether it is virtual, in-person, or

DAY TO DAY SKILLS

Laundry

Walk your kids through the basics of operating the washing machine and dryer, and how to sort clothes. Follow it up with a quick tutorial of folding and keeping clothes organized in dressers and/or closets. For younger kids, something as simple as letting them attempt to sort and fold laundry while you complete the rest will go a long way for their self esteem.

Cooking

Introducing your child to measurements and cooking implements is an easy way to begin their culinary education. Using measuring spoons, mixing, and setting the table are all things younger children can help with. Teens can follow recipes to assist in multi-step family meals.

hybrid, youth are facing an educational experience different from anything they have known.” Opening up about feelings and acknowledging the challenges can help. “Children are inherently resilient, however, they need to be well-supported, Cashion says. “Acknowledging their (everyone’s) distress is just as important and supporting their resiliency.” Offering kids opportunities to connect and take care of themselves physically has the potential to improve their state of mind as well. “Finding opportunities to engage in activities outside school (again virtually or in a safe in-person environment) allows not only some level of social engagement, but connecting with peers normalizes the abnormality of the situation—when they are able to realize that they are not as alone as it sometimes feels this reduces stress,” she says. “Exercise, always important, is now more so. The same is true for regular, and adequate, sleep.” Setting a good example can be effective, too. “Kids are social cognitive learners— they model what they see—and, in this way can be supported and guided by the

Taking Care of a Pet... or a Plant

Helping feed pets or watering plants adds up in teaching kids responsibility in caring for a living thing. Have your younger child help scoop dog or cat food. Have your younger child help scoop dog or cat food. If they’re older, kids can take Fido for a walk or change the bedding in the hamster cage. If the flowers need tending, a kid-friendly watering can help develop a young green thumb.

adults in their lives,” explains Cashion.

PERSONAL FINANCE/ BUDGETING

Developing solid economic and personal finance skills when kids are young is a very good thing, says Julie Weaver, executive director of the Maryland Council on Economic Education. It’s also good to expand and reinforce those skills as they mature, she says. “The best approach is a building blocks approach, beginning with basic concepts such as needs versus wants and the opportunity cost of choosing one thing or experience over another,” Weaver says. She recommends that parents head to the bank with their children during their early grade school years. “Elementary school is a great time for parents to open a savings account with their child to help the child learn the basics of saving money,” Weaver explains. She also encourages counting coins and explaining bills. Weaver says kids can also learn financial responsibility by doing chores around the house for an allowance and saving their income (and spending a portion on something they want, too).

Using Tools

A basic understanding of tools is a great way to give kids skills that can carry them through their lives. Smaller hands can become familiar with tape measures and “practice” hammering and sawing with versions made for kids. Once they’re old enough, children and teens can assist parents with DIY work around the house.

Once children are a bit older, they can get involved with budgeting and begin to think about what their own business might look like. “Middle school is a great time to introduce budgeting and involve children in the family’s budget,” Weaver says. A child in middle school can help with planning the grocery list and budget each week. Middle school is also a great time to teach children about entrepreneurship and career options, Weaver says. “Great lessons in entrepreneurship can be learned in having a simple bake sale where a child can learn about the costs of production, pricing strategy, marketing, and measuring return on investment.” For high schoolers, Weaver recommends that kids become familiar with topics like insurance, credit and debt, credit scores, and “long-term saving concepts,” like an IRA account. “It is imperative to have these conversations before a child goes off to college or the working world so that they don’t fall prey to predatory lenders or make poor decisions about financing their education,” she adds.
