Abstract Baggesi people are the masters of overcoming dark times. When it comes to improving the community, they are proactive by creating associations and raising money. Despite this, there are opposing perceptions of how Baggio is perceived. While the locals mention the nice “countryside” atmosphere that characterizes the neighbourhood and assure that it is not as dangerous as it was in the past, an outsider will either mention that he only knows Parco Delle Cave or that it is a dangerous neighbourhood. How can we use the proactiveness of the Baggesi community and the “countryside” vibes of Baggio as a strategy to communicate their actual identity? In this booklet, you will see the process of designing a product-service system strategy that aims to highlight Baggio’s positive characteristics to prompt a positive perception of the neighbourhood by embracing cooperation in the Baggesi community. This strategy consists of different design interventions mainly based on a collaborative urban garden which create a system for the community to participate in different ways: building it, growing crops or personalizing it. All this is united under a communication system that ensures and highlights Baggio’s strong identity.

Setting the scene

Space as a Driver Fostering relationship & valorizing space by adding a new element What The numerous green areas in Baggio become a new meeting point for Baggesi people, turning into strategic spots for strengthening Baggio’s identity.

Narrative Anita slowly goes out of her home to go to the nearest park to do her daily morning walk. Being 75 has made her pace slower, so she does not always have the time and the strength to go all the times to reach Parco Delle Cave. The park next to her home is also where Rocio and Luca are usually hanging out and working to help in the community associations. They are always kind to her, they always welcome her with a warm smile and make a gesture to call her to join them. As months pass by, Anita is more likely to go to the park because here she can hang in with people that she was able to know, strengthening also the relationship with who she already knows.

Key points 1. A lived space leaves no room for degradation Baggio is socially active and proactive in finding solutions to its needs. The best-maintained places are the ones people have worked on in the first person.

"We want to become the new organ of Baggio: not a real musical instrument but still uniting people"

2. Small village vibes Baggio has a strong rural identity and popular culture. Spatially talking, it is mostly expressed in the city centre, through a set of ceramics.

3. Not just Parco delle Cave People associate Baggio with Parco delle Cave but actually, the neighbourhood is full of other green areas.

Vision We want to embrace and take advantage of Baggio’s distinctiveness and strong identity and extend trying also to improve outsiders perception of this neighbourhood.

Mission Goals • • • • •

7

Baggio is not just the centre and Parco delle Cave. We want to extend its identity. We want to exploit its social attitude. We want to exploit its rural attitude. We want to spread Baggio’s identity also in the periphery of Baggio, creating a unique strong identity. We want to exploit the green areas present in Baggio’s territory.

We want to harness the common aptitude of the citizens of Baggio to participate and be proactive and create a new excuse to get together and create community, without leaving room for degradation.

Why The intention is to integrate Baggio’s past and present, just as this neighbourhood is good at doing. The actual Baggio involve at the same time the centre that seems to be stopped in time and the surrounding areas with a more modern look. Similarly, we design this service taking an activity from Baggio’s rural roots and the current attitude of the communities living there to be proactive and socially active in the neighbourhood.

How

Communication Strategy Diffused community gardens

Organo goes to cover three different areas of intervention that respectively are: Diffused community gardens, Paint the Organo and the Communication Strategy.

Paint the Organo

Why “Organo”? Exactly like Baggio’s organ neither this one is a real musical instrument, yet is capable of attracting people and telling a story. Moreover, the organ’s pipes play different notes but together contribute to creating a melody. In the same way, our Organo is a system composed of different interventions that work towards a common goal. 8

Who is involved We have identified three Personas that represent specific users of our service who will be able to take advantage of it in different ways, driven by different needs and objectives.

Gardenia Grandma "A little action that brings a smile to someone fills me with joy"

The first Persona, Gardenia Grandma, amateur cultivator, is an elderly lady with great availability of free time who is willing to offer her work in exchange for fresh fruit and vegetables and some conversation. The second one, Malika Mama, the Buyer, is a working woman with little free time but who does not want to give up some healthy vegetables to cook the typical dishes of her origins.

Age: 75 years old Origin: Philippine Occupation: Retired

Finally, the third one, Steve Soil, the cultivator farmer, is a professional farmer that can offer his experience in growing crops and spread them into the community.

Bio

The service is addressed both to Cultivator, so people who have time and effort to spent doing gardening and also to Buyers, people who want to sustain economically this activity in change of some fresh vegetables.

Where does it happen? We choose pilot areas where to land our gardens. The main one is in Parco delle Cave because it is the most known park in Baggio and is where people meet to have a walk or to do sport. The others have been chosen because they are evenly distributed around the neighbourhood, so they become a new focal point that pushes people to go through the edges of Baggio centre. They are also surrounded by houses and sometimes also by schools, so they can easily become a social meeting point, allowing neighbours to know each other.

Why gardening?

How to participate?

The project aims at creating social relations among people as living in big condos makes it hard to establish a relationship with neighbours.

Gardeners

The idea is to create a diffused urban garden spread across the green areas of Baggio, to create meeting points for the various blocks scattered around the neighbourhood. Green areas are one of the things that most characterizes this particular district of Milan, and differentiates it from the metropolis. This activity also encourages a closer relationship with nature and an active lifestyle as people will have space where they can grow vegetables. Another characterizing element of Baggio is the proactive attitude of the community and its very rural and peasant appearance. For this reason, the creation of a community garden is both an opportunity for Baggesi people to get to know each other better and to exploit the rurality of the neighbourhood.

The activity of growing crops is addressed to people that have time to involve in that. This is aimed both to create bonds among the neighbours and creating community, but also to promote a closer relationship with nature.

Adopters Also, people who can not plant in the first person can participate in the Service by “adopting a plant”. They can pay for it and the Cultivator will take care of this extra plant and deliver its fruits to the Adopter. This activity creates also a one to one relationship among them.

Service for the city The service will also involve local activities such as schools, parishes, local farmers, local dealers and associations. We selected some of them from the network already existing there which are centred mainly on promoting social cohesion in the area. These are Baggio Bene Comune, which distinguished itself by the participatory redesign of the Library, ShareRadio, a web radio that aims to combine forms of citizen journalism, storytelling and media education and aXis Association that coordinates socio-educational initiatives, for the promotion of participatory processes and community development.

Diffused community gardens How it works?

17

A scalable system The service is enabled by the product inside the space: the vegetable garden. This consists of a modular element repeated several times depending on the availability of space and the need for space for plants to grow. The modules give flexibility and the possibility to scale up the project according to the availability of space. The shape of the modules follows both a functional logic and an aesthetic logic linked to the identity of the place and in particular to its way of communicating through majolica. Picture 1 | Photo by Coltivando (MI) | Photo from coltivando.polimi.it

Level zero and Raised gardens To shape the Community Garden we were inspired by existing urban gardens. After doing some research (see the “Design Process” Chapter to see more), we realized that there are mainly two types of urban gardens. The first is that of raised vegetable gardens (Picture 1 and 2), which are mostly used when we do not know the quality of the soil of the place. For this reason, it is preferable to use “new and uncontaminated” soil, preparing it according to the plantations that we want to grow. The second type of urban vegetable garden and also the most widespread is the classic one that directly grows crops using the existing soil, which we can see in Picture 3 and 4. We have therefore chosen to adopt a single modular form and realize it for two different heights: the ground and the raised one, to be used according to the soil conditions.

18

Modular as a majolica Our goal is to obtain a form that is easy to transport and assemble by the user. For this reason, we designed a simple and regular shape that is modular and therefore repeatable indefinitely, depending on the availability of the land you have. The modules, placed side by side, leaving in the middle a minimum passage of 1.5 meters, reproduce the logic behind the majolica. Each tile has its own meaning, but it is when they are all together that they acquire a complete overall appearance. In the same way, the modules work. In addition to bringing back the typical form of majolica, each module acquires importance when it is juxtaposed with others.

Functionality Case for the uncontaminated soil

First of all, a vegetable garden must be functional. The structure must be suitable for the healthy cultivation of plants. For this reason, we provide two different height of the poliedric structure. The elevated one is provided with a higher case where new, uncontaminated soil is poured. Furthermore, being an “elevated” ground, makes it functional for people to work on as it reduces the effort for bending over the soil. In case the quality of the soil is good, there is the possibility to work this soil directly, still keeping the same aspect of the raised ones to reinforce its identity. Both the higher and the lower version of the furniture is provided with sittings with storage compartments inside in which to store all the tools needed to work.

20

A place to meet The Urban Garden is not only a place to cultivate plantations but is also a meeting point for the local community. For this reason, the furniture includes also seats to rest and share a moment with a friend, to participate in the creation of a common good that is precisely the urban garden community. The modules are designed to be arranged in such a way to create areas of sociability that enable the creation of a strong community atmosphere and the affirmation of urban gardens as a meeting place. Furthermore, the structure is also easily accessible to children as the height of the raised one is only 750mm.

Assembly The modular structure is easily transportable and its assembly is very intuitive. In this way, the user is encouraged to take part in this activity and to participate actively in the service. The user is guided in the assembly phase by the instructions printed in the cardboard band that holds the various components of the furniture for transportation. Here the user can find the instructions for assembly it. This operation is very easy to perform because the pieces are simple to nail each other and, in the case of the low module to be driven into the ground to obtain greater stability.

Materials Spruce wood It is a light-coloured wood with not very marked regular veining that tends to a reddish colour. Spruce is widespread in central and southern Europe and in particular in Italy it is common in the Alps, in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and in the Calabrian-Lucan Apennines. It has no resin in its interior that gives the material vulnerability to mould and xylophagous insects attack. On the other side, it has a good aptitude to be impregnated with oils and waxes to increase the resistance to atmospheric agents and it offers a suitable surface for treatment. The form in which it is used is the laminated panel.

Why we choose it • • • • • •

Photo from blog.frontiersin.org

Photo from theconstructor.org

Easy to find locally (the Alps easy to reach from Milan). Low cost (boards of 3000x50x15mm cost 4.25 euros per piece). Lightness and therefore ease of transport/construction. Ease of processing (due to the contained hardness). Good aptitude to be impregnated with oils and waxes to increase the wood’s resistance to atmospheric agents. Good suitability for surface treatment.

People photos from mrcutout.com

As the famous quotation said “a participated place leaves no room for degradation”, after involve people assembling the gardening structure, we want to give everyone also the possibility to be part of the structure’s customization and distinguishing activity. At the moment in which one or more modules will be built, there will be a call to action that will happen through our communication channels (digital channels such as our website and analogical channels such as posters affixed in the city). There will be a daily event dedicated to the personalization of the new furniture. We will provide people with a kit for personalization, including paint, brushes, sponges and stencils. In this way, everyone in each garden can paint the wooden structures expressing their own identity. The use of stencils allow freedom of expression but at the same time let them speak the same visual language. 28

How is it useful? Gardners Gardners can find useful the web platform to easily access the Toolkit we provide them. It is about every information they need to bring the gardening activity, starting from the assembly instructions to some cultivation guidelines and all organizational tips to coordinate the activities to carry on. Furthermore here they can also order all the thing they need such as the seedling, tools, fertilizers, etc.

Adopters The web platform also give the possibility to adopters to join the service, buying an extra plant and organize the delivery of its fruits.

Service for the city We designed a web platform with which people can know information about Organo, what we are doing and how we are doing it. Then they can decide if they want to be part of the community or not and if yes decide how to participate in it. We designed also an advertising campaign that plays on the common negative sayings about Baggio, exploiting the negative language and altering it with a fun twist. This is aimed in particular to change the mentality of people outside Baggio and in some way attract them here by advertising the service. All the touchpoints are visually connected through the motif of majolicas.

The palette has bright colours taken directly from the colours of the vegetables: colours such as green, purple and shades of yellow are used.

Gardening guidelines We want to provide our users with some guidelines for starting doing gardening. These can be found directly on the Website and they aim to give them useful advice on how to do gardening in the easier way possible.

How to start gardening 1st STEP: Prepare the soil After building the structure, it is essential composing the soil. We suggest the following composition. Starting from the lowest layer, place a layer of wood, branches and shavings to drain. Then put a thin layer of vermiculite (volcanic rock), over it a layer of natural compost and a coconut fibre blend. Finally, put the last layer of soil substrate. The preparation of the soil is done.

2nd STEP: Order the plants Choose the plant you want to have in your Organo and its amount and order it from the website. The seedlings are all from a local dealer so they suit the area and the soil conditions.

3rd STEP: Plant the seedling Place the seedling in single rows about 20-25 cm apart (IT DEPENDS ON THE PLANT), taking care to dig a hole of the right depth, so that the base of the plant is parallel to the ground. Fill the holes with more soil substrate and press it down to cover the root system.

4th STEP: Water well Keep the garden bed well-watered. This garden should be moist most of the time, not dry. Young plants need a lot of water to start, but soon they will be able to last longer as they grow roots to reach the moist soil below.

5th STEP: Thinning the garden When you see the seeds begin to sprout, make sure they have room to spread out by pinching out the ones you don’t want. Don’t be too hasty with thinning, as you want to give the many varieties a chance to grow and thrive.

6th STEP: Select and collect This planting method doesn’t come with a plan but you’ll make it up as the garden grows! Observe what is growing and blooming and pull up everything dry. Collect all the dry leaves and put them in the drier to make them ready for paper production.

soil substrate coconut fiber blend natural compost vermiculite (volcanic rock)

7th STEP: Harvest and enjoy! After following all of these steps you’ll have this beautiful, lush garden full of all the vegetables and flowers you’ve always dreamed of having. Now it’s time to enjoy all your hard work!

Tools For this kind of gardens, there is no need for many tools, since this cultivation is on a small scale. Most of the work will be done simply with the hands, so the first suggestion is to get gardening gloves. Simple tools useful for growing: • Small hand tools - A hoe to weed and oxygenate the soil helping to prevent waterlogging and cryptogamic diseases. - The rake to bury the seedlings and to break up the soil periodically. - A planter for digging holes in the ground for transplanting and digging. - Trident to break up the soil. • Irrigation - Watering can - Water pipe - Drip irrigation system connected to a tap - Spray • Pruning and maintenance - Scissors or shears, useful for harvesting, but also for cutting diseased parts of the seedlings or for any pruning. • Fertilization: in this kind of cultivations, it is necessary to add fertilizer periodically to make nitrogen and other nutrients available to the plant, for instance: - manure - compost - humus

Curiosities

Variety with semi-determined plant of good vigor, medium internode and early cycle. The fruit is globular, multilocular, purple when ripe. Very important size with a weight from 300 to 500 gr. It adapts to all soils but it gives its best in soils of medium texture, deep, basically loose, fresh, fertile. From April to June. Plant with high nutritional needs. Distribute organic fertilizers in the winter before tilling. Spread phosphorus and potassium fertilizers before transplanting. During cultivation intervene 2-3 times with nitrates followed by irrigation. From June to October. Downy mildew: it is a fungal disease which develops on the leaves when there are hot humid conditions, for example in June. It is necessary to spray the leaves preventively with copper-based products. Tie the main stem to wooden stakes or bamboo canes to better support them. Fleshy flesh, excellent for salads. Widespread especially in central and southern Italy. Much appreciated in the past, it has recently been rediscovered.

Seasonal activities

43

Primary Activities

Secondary Activities

Plant As soon as spring starts the local dealers provide the seeds and plants for planting season. Gardeners and community leaders receive the necessary tools to plant and transplant. This activity is developed inside the community gardens.

Harvest Depending on the plants that each community garden has, at about a month passed from planting some of them will start growing the first crops. This activity is developed inside the community gardens.

Take care of Right after Organo community gardens have the plants in the soil it is time for the gardeners to take care of them: watering, weeding and spending fun time in the community gardens will help assure that the plants will grow healthy. This activity is developed inside the community gardens.

Prepare preserves Some plants will give more crops than what the community eats: here is when it is time to start gathering those extra fruits and vegetables to conserve them during the wintertime. People will learn how to do marmalade, tomato sauce, and pickles. This activity can be developed in a school. Dry leafs Every leaf that dries or weeds that are taken out will be placed inside a dryer to then recycle. This activity is developed inside the community gardens.

Tertiary Activities Baggio Fair Once a year the people that are part of the community show what they have done in Organo’s stand in Baggio fair. It is the moment when they get more visibility to the outsider and a great opportunity to meet with adopters and local dealers. This activity is done in Parco di Baggio where the fair happens. Create Bags During the winter season, instead of spending time outside in the cold weather, Organo organizes some workshops in local schools to teach people to create paper out of dried leaves. This paper then works to create the delivery bags. This activity can be developed in a school. Send Inside the paper bags made in the previous year, Organo’s community sends you a sample of the crops to the adopters. This activity is done inside Baggio, crops are transported from community gardens to the address of the adopter.

Paper bag A paper bag is designed to be made from recycled material just from the scraps of dried leaves from the Organo community garden. The size is suitable to hold a generous amount of fruits and vegetables to be delivered to customers/participant of the service. It has a square base of 250x250mm and an equal height of 250mm. The upper closure reminds of the old paper bags in which fruits and vegetables were once packed at the greengrocer’s. The Organo community can easily self-produce this bag by using the same initial template, cutting and folding the recycled paper and finally apply the branded sticker on the sides.

Promoting posters

For the communication around Milan, we wanted to play on the idea that the Milanese have of Baggio, namely that of a dangerous place that does not enjoy a good reputation. We decided to exploit the saying “Baggio, take courage” that the Milanese adopt towards this neighbourhood as if to understand that it takes courage to go to Baggio. The communication technique is therefore to put the advice not to go to Baggio in clearly visible characters, but then in the lower part giving advice that invites you to go there. The graphics in the poster are linked to the communicative graphics of the Organ project and are the same that will be printed on the stencils used for painting the furniture. Stakeholder’s Role Government Municipio 7 provides permission to intervene in public parks, facilitating resources like water and the soil that the parks already have. In return, they will receive the recognition of the citizens for collaborating in the project and the improvement of the quality of life in the district. Associations Organo opens a call for all associations that belong to Organo to partner up with them. The partnership consists of associations to promote Organo to their volunteers and supporters to give Organo more visibility inside the community. In exchange, Organo will spread the word about the organizations inside the community. Dealers The dealers are local businesses that provide the tools, seeds and plants each year to Organo. And Organo promotes the business inside the community. Adopters The adopters are people that want to support the community but do not have the time to directly participate inside the community gardens. So they adopt a plant. They pay a fee to adopt it and someone else takes care of it. Then when harvesting time arrives, the adopters receive part of the harvest in exchange.

Gardeners The gardeners are the heart of the community, they meet in Organo community gardens to take care of the plants and to spend some quality time with neighbours. They also participate in seasonal activities like: paper bag making with leaves, learn how to cook alternative products with the harvest, delivering part of the harvest to the adopters and, they can also volunteer in the annual Baggio fair representing Organo, selling the crops and subproducts. They receive a symbolic percentage of the total revenue of the community garden they participate in and access to the fruits and vegetables from the harvest and subproducts, but both of these are merely symbolic, the real value is the experience of learning from the seasonal activities, spending quality time in nature and getting to know the neighbours. Buyers The buyers can be either locals or outsiders that decide to try the products and pay for them. Part of the money goes to support the community and the gardeners.

Defining the Edges Norming: finding rules to define the area We discussed in general about where we want to settle our project trying to figuring out how to exploit the fact of being a group entirely in presence. Options we discussed: • Milan | Around Milan (Field research) • Italy | Europe | All over the world (Desk research only + diversity as a pro)

Lombardy

Milan

Although it may be interesting to explore and research unknown areas with very different realities and lifestyles since we are an in-person group we would like to use this positive “factor” to be able to do research directly on the site and fully understand the neighbourhood we are going to choose. Norm: Somewhere in Milan and the hinterland we see potentialities and we can reach easily.

Baggio

Exploring: finding areas following the rules Desk research about interesting areas of Milan and hinterland, trying to find pro and cons and decide the best one.

Narrowing Go into more detail in defining the area by setting its boundaries. Starting from choosing Milan in the Lombardy region, we arrived at the definition of the Baggio district in the southwest of the City of Milan.

57

Administrative boundaries The boundaries of the area are determined by precise administrative boundaries, as Baggio is a well-defined neighbourhood within the City of Milan, integrated into the municipality only since 1923.

Natural Edges An advantage of the Baggio neighbourhood is the proximity and the presence of green areas in its territory. Baggio borders with Parco delle Cave, which is one of the largest parks in Milan: Parco delle Cave not only has vast green areas but also ponds and a long pedestrian and cycle path that allows you to explore it far and wide. Parco delle Cave was obtained from a former quarry from which natural lakes have been obtained. It is interesting because it preserves a particular flora and fauna which makes the place even more attractive.

Another border of Baggio is the one to the south with the Olmi district. The Olmi district is a residential building district that has about 8000 inhabitants. Administratively it is included in Municipality 7, as is Baggio, Forze Armate and San Siro.

Context History of Baggio Da Baggio family The place was named “Baggio” in the Middle Age when it reached its peak of splendour under the rule of the eponymous family (“da Baggio”, also known as “the Baggi”). This family was so important that one of its members, Anselmo da Baggio, became Pope, with the name Pope Alexander II and thanks to them it became an influent political and military centre. As a sign of power and devotion, the Baggio family built a Lombard-Gothic church dedicated to Saint Apollinarison the ruins of the Roman watchtower. During Longobards rule, Baggio became a fortified rural community.

3 th BC

9-11 th

Roman Empire In 221 a.C., the entire territory was conquered by Romans, who accompanied each conquest with an intense work of civilization that resulted in the construction of roads and settlements.

12 th

Agriculture and textiles Over the centuries, Baggio remained largely independent of Milan, despite the proximity. In origin, its economy was largely based on agriculture. In the 15th century, when mulberry was introduced in Italy, Baggio specialized in sericulture, and hence also textile production.

15 th

Barbarossa invasion During Longobards rule, Baggio became a fortified rural community, which in 1162 reportedly granted asylum to Milanese refugees after Frederick I Barbarossa invaded the city.

“Milanization” The population of the municipality grew quickly in the first decades of the 20th century, as a consequence of the overpopulation (and the consequent rise of land prices) in Milan. As the population increased, Baggio became economically less autonomous, as a large part of its inhabitants worked in factories in Milan rather than in Baggio’s textile industry. In 1913, the first tramway was established on the “Baggina”, the road connecting Baggio to Milan, to facilitate commuting. In 1923, Baggio was annexed to Milan.

19 th

20 th

1923

Unification of Italy At the unification of Italy, Baggio became a municipality; back then, its area was about 400 hectares and its population about 1.200. In the late 19th-century textile factories appeared. Since there is a need for space for new functions, municipality buildings that are now in Stovani square are constructed.

Baggio is officially part of Milan 59

Plan for the M1 metroline In 2021 the construction of the extension of the underground line is expected to begin, which will allow Milanese citizens to reach more peripheral areas such as Baggio, Quartiere Olmi and Valsesia. The construction and operation of these three stops are scheduled for 2027. This solution will not only improve the connection between the various districts of Milan but also has an environmental objective: in fact, today Baggio is connected to the Bisceglie metro only through the bus line, which is the only public transport available in this neighbourhood. With the construction of three metro stops, there will be fewer emissions due to traffic and less crowding in public transport.

63

Population stats and data Ethnicities in Baggio Based on the Direzione Servizi Civici Partecipazione e Sport 2018 studio, we found that 18% of the habitants in Baggio, Forze Armate and S.Siro are foreigners that come from 14 main countries. In the first place, we have Egyptians who are 6.374 people, in second place 5.730 Philippines and third place 2.731 Peruvians. We consider this important because the presence of diverse groups of people affects the neighbourhood in their traditiosìns, gastronomy and consumer habits.

Uses and costumes Average age

Va’ a Bàgg a sonà l’orghen

In Baggio, the population over 65 years old is increasing at the same time that the younger population is prominently decreasing. With this, we can deduce that Baggio is and could continue being an “old” neighbourhood in 2030.

A well-known traditional Milanese idiom is “va a Bagg a sonà l’òrghen”, that is, “go play the organ in Baggio”. The intent of the phrase is roughly equivalent to that of the English phrases “get lost” or “go to hell”. This idiom came about as the main church of Baggio used to have the painting of an organ on a wall, supposedly because the church was too poor to afford to buy the actual instrument. Thus, “to go play the organ in Baggio” is a meaningless task, which is assigned for the sole purpose of getting rid of the person one assigns it to.

Also, the residents in Baggio are gradually decreasing because most of them are moving near Milan, because of the work and because of the bad connection of Baggio to Milan.

Majolicas The project foresees 9 trails and 54 stories represented in Mayolicas that tell about the past and the present of Baggio Neighborhood. Many people from different regions of Italy participated in the project. The panels use materials like terracotta, ceramic and volcanic rock that form the shapes to represent the traditions becoming a testimony of the time that we live in and of the traditions and the transformations that Baggio lived.

Cultural centres In Baggio, there are three particular cultural centres, the socio-cultural and recreational centre “il Monastero”, the cultural centre “Roberto Ronchi” and the Associazione Dimensions Diverse - Space of Relationship and Thought. These spaces are areas that are made available to the numerous associations present for meetings and debates. Some also organize recreational activities for seniors, such as ballroom dancing classes or entertainment activities. Political but also social issues are dealt with, such as the prevention of psychological diseases due to gambling.

aMAGGIO aBAGGIO In recent years, the increase in the number of immigrants has contributed to accelerating a dangerous process of disintegration of the society, fueling mistrust, fear and a growing distance. For these reasons, they introduced an event called “aMAGGIO aBAGGIO” to promote a different form of coexistence and to develop inclusion, relationship, sharing and promotion of a tolerant and supportive sensitivity. They have particular attention to younger groups and multiculturality. They also promote volunteering through the participation of various associations. Photo from azionesolifale.com

Sagra di Baggio The Sagra di Baggio is a traditional village festival that takes place every year in the third week of October involving neighbourhood realities, associations, schools, artists, residents and traders. At each festival, the “l’Orghen d’or” (the golden organ) prize is awarded to people and associations who work to animate and bring life to the neighbourhood.

The donkeys’ race The donkey race is a sort of Palio in which citizens run on foot pulling a donkey, each covered with a different coloured sheet. The donkey is the symbol of the neighbourhood: in fact, an ancient tale tells the story of a farmer who allegedly brought a donkey to the roof of the bell tower of the church of Sant’Apollinare to eat the grass that had grown there.

Field observation People of Baggio The inhabitants of Baggio have a high average age. Even though, here there are many cultural associations and initiatives that aim to keep the territory alive. The local identity is deeply perceived when visiting the place: people are willing to explain the origins of the place and to let those who come from outside know the history of the neighbourhood. The general impression is that of a suburban town, which has nothing to do with the frenzy and urbanization of Milan.

We see different kind of people according to the area of the district they inhabit. The historic centre is mainly populated by adults and elderly people who preserve the local culture. Leaving the centre, the age drops slightly, as there are also points of interest such as the big Parco delle Cave, which attracts more sporty people and groups of young people. As you leave the historic centre, the idea that Baggio gives is that of a gradual return to contemporary civilization, with the presence of public services and large public and private buildings. Photos by Tulips Group 3

69

Architectural differences The historic centre of Baggio is very old: on the external walls of the houses, you can find mosaics that show ancient maps or illustrate the works that were carried out in the shops. Many courts have a medieval-style as if time has stood still. This style is very much in contrast with the style of the large buildings that are located outside the historic centre, and in general with the Milanese style. The busy streets have numerous palaces and in some cases even council houses, which duplicate the identity of Baggio.

Constraints STEP 1 As a first step, we analyzed the general perception that Baggio gave us during the on-site research. Among the constraints, we found out the ones related to means of transport and the fact that no underground reaches Baggio. All this affects the perception of distance: even if it is not so far from the city centre in terms of kilometres, the journey to reach Baggio seems to be very long. This could be the first constraint that, with the reputation of the place, make this neighbourhood unattractive.

Opportunities STEP 3 Then, we analyzed the constraints of the previous phases to understand what could be the opportunities that arose. We integrated these thoughts with the desk research to also understand what are the plans for this neighbourhood. Three new metro stops are planned to connect Baggio to a hundred cities. Among other opportunities, the strong cultural identity that the centre of Baggio has and which is not adequately communicated to the rest of the city was also highlighted.

On the horizontal axis, we have placed “Space as a driver for relationships” on the left, which means a place that is valued precisely for the presence of people inside and for their mutual relationship. On the right side, we have the opposite concept of “Space as an attraction”, which means that the place is the value of the place itself. What The numerous green areas in Baggio become a new meeting point for Baggesi people, turning into strategic spots for strengthening Baggio’s identity.

What An escape from the metropolis without going outside Milan. People go to Baggio, the historical oasis, to enjoy the best of nature and civilization. Narrative Georgia cannot get used to Milan’s “always in a hurry” lifestyle. She grew up in someplace in Lombardy that is too small for someone to know about its existence. So she is always counting the minutes left for her caregiver to take her to Baggio: the oasis inside Milan, a place where she feels warm, food tastes like home and where she can admire the modest beauty of Sant’ Apollinare. And why not, give one or two prayers for her children and grandchildren.

What Reshaping and repositioning the neighbourhood identity through a new spatial feature. Narrative “It might be hard for you to imagine but, some years ago, Baggio had not a good reputation because of some episodes of vandalism and drug dealing...” the professor tells her students. Bianca is astonished, Baggio is a place that is known for being calm and rich in culture. Walking on the streets of Baggio means finding interesting “instagrammable” installations, performances or other cultural activities. It has a rich cultural background and history.

INSIGHT: People know it from fame but never been there to see what it looks like. Sometimes the distance from the centre seems to be a deterrent in visiting the neighbourhood.

Coltivando The initiative to create urban gardens is an idea that is becoming increasingly popular, especially in cities where it is not usual to have green spaces, such as Milan. In 2012, for example, a community urban garden project was born in the area of the Politecnico di Milano, which aims both to promote a sustainable lifestyle and to create a community of Milanese citizens who can share their products but also spend time together. Key steps The key to bringing these initiatives to life is the involvement of various actors, including citizens in the first place, who, in this way, are involved not only in the activity of the garden but also in related initiatives, such as sports or festivals. Besides the citizens, it is also important to involve the associations present in the territory as well as the municipality and the services connected to it, such as libraries. The practical implementation of the garden must take into account many factors, including the amount of light and shade, water and the quality of the soil. For this last point, it is very difficult to be 100% sure that the soil is suitable for cultivation: for this reason, it is always preferred to use raised pots that contain good and special soil for the good growth of vegetables. Finally, a vegetable garden needs precise rules that must be respected by all participants. Only in this way it can last over time.
