Recipients of the 6th Annual Fifth Third Bank Community Leaders Award Lori F. Cannon - LBGTQ Community Leader – Over 25 years ago during the height of the AIDS Crisis, Cannon founded the city’s only food pantry and grocery center for those affected by HIV/AIDS at a time when people with AIDS were considered lepers and faced incredible discrimination. Cannon was soon overseeing an army of 400 volunteers who would show up seven days a week to deliver meals to 1200 people who were suffering from AIDS. Cannon is donating $5,300 to the Open Hand’s food budget. Julie Smolyansky - Women’s Community Leader - Becoming the youngest female CEO of a publicly held firm when she took over Lifeway Foods at 27, Smolyansky has since boosted annual revenue to over $130 million and expanded distribution throughout the US, Canada, and the UK . “National Louis fosters a strong sense of community engagement among students – many of whom pursue serviceoriented careers that improve society,” said Nivine Megahed, Ph.D., president of NLU. “We commend this year’s Reach Award recipients for their dedication to excellence and the positive influence and inspiration that they bring to those in the community.” A Chicago resident, Dr. Samuel is senior program director for Claretian Associates, an affordable housing developer in the South Chicago neighborhood that also provides related human services and programs for residents with low and moderate incomes. She directs the Chicago Public Schools’ Safe Passage Program, the Southeast Chicago Coalition for the Arts, and South Chicago/South Shore Ceasefire. In her remarks to the audience attending NLU’s Reach Award’s gala at the Hotel Sofitel, Dr. Samuel asked the

questions that drive her passion to help heal the ailing neighborhoods she serves. “How do you heal a community? How do you heal a community from seeing Arnold Mireles gunned downed because he stood up to the gangs? And what about the little girl in our community named “NaNa” that was ready to go back to school after Labor Day Weekend but lost that chance to a bullet?” “I was talking to a teenager that lives in the community and he had expressed that he had been shot in the leg 3 times. I asked him about his well-being and what was going on in school. He said, ‘School? I don’t go to school much and when I do, I am wondering why am I still alive, and will I get home safe.’” In the summer of 2015, Dr. Samuel said she surveyed 126 people in the community to better understand the impact of violence. “I learned that 51-percent had witnessed a shooting. All I could think about is, ‘if you have to live with that kind of trauma then what must

your life look like?’ Walking to the store for a bottle of milk—looking over your shoulder to see if someone might harm you; can’t go to the park-can’t sit in a car.” Dr. Samuel returned to school after beginning her professional career because “the results of the inequities in society driven by racism and poverty sparked my interest in community psychology. “I will not sit here tolerate the injustices of this world because National Louis University has strengthened my voice. Oh, and how do you heal a community? By providing a sense of safety, wellbeing and belonging” she said. Dr. Samuel is a board member of the South Chicago Chamber of Commerce, EPIC Academy, and SkyART Art Center. She is also a member of the Mayor’s Commission for a Safer Chicago/Health and Healing Committee. Samuel earned a Master’s in Public Policy and a doctorate in Community Psychology from National Louis University.

AMA Applauds Administration’s New Modernized Nutrition Label

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently applauded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for releasing its modernized Nutrition Facts Label to reflect the latest in scientific research to help consumers maintain healthy dietary practices. The new label, which will appear on the back of all packaged foods and beverages, lists added sugar in addition to total sugar. “The newly updated Nutrition Facts Label better equips consumers with the information they need to make healthy food and beverage choices and ultimately help improve health outcomes for patients across the country,” said AMA President Steven J. Stack, M.D. “We commend the FDA for modernizing the Label, particularly the inclusion of added sugars, which we believe will be extremely helpful in preventing the debilitating chronic medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease, currently affecting millions of Americans,” Stack said.

Raoul sponsors elected school board for Chicago State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago 13th) announced recently that he is sponsoring a plan to bring the Chicago Public Schools into line with every other district in Illinois by making its school board a democratically elected body. He will hold hearings in Chicago to gather input from parents and other community members to ensure fair representation in the transition to elections, which will first be held in 2018 if the measure becomes law.

“Chicago’s children deserve nothing less than full equality with the rest of the state – parity in funding and in democratic governance of their school district,” Raoul said. “It’s time to get this right, and I look forward to working with our parents and advocates to give CPS the government our schools so desperately need,” Raoul said in a released statement. House Bill 557 is currently under consideration in the Senate after passing

in the House. Raoul expressed his intention to hold open meetings this summer to hear from the public and work out details of the plan. “The families who trust CPS with their children’s futures know our schools have entered trying times, and they rightly demand accountable leadership,” Raoul said. “Chicago should be a flagship, not an outlier, and thoughtful self-government can achieve this for the good of our children and our city,” he said.

Hearing Supports State’s Clean Energy Future The Illinois Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee recently held a hearing on Senate Bill 1585 – the Next Generation Energy Plan –legislation that would drive Illinois’ clean energy future while saving and creating jobs and strengthening the state’s economy. An outgrowth of months of still ongoing discussions between Exelon Generation, ComEd,

and members of the Clean Jobs Coalition, the Next Generation Energy Plan advances the goals of a host of stakeholders by delivering clean energy, jumpstarting solar development, nearly doubling energy efficiency, providing for $1 billion in lowincome assistance, and securing the future of Illinois’ nuclear plants. Labor leaders, low-income advocates, community

leaders, and grid security experts attended the hearing to advocate for the bill, while key leaders within the Clean Jobs Coalition voiced support for important aspects of SB1585 and for a path forward for this comprehensive energy bill for the state. Pastor John F. Hannah By Craig G. May

J

ohn F. Hannah, Senior Pastor at New Life Covenant Church Southeast, is a man on many missions. One of those missions includes,”Prayer On The 9,” an ambitious protest that has now entered it’s sixth year. The most recent event occurred this past Saturday. During the event, Hannah, his congregation and a host of anti-violence supporters fill the streets between the corners along 79th Street from Greenwood Ave. west to the Dan Ryan. Their mission---to peacefully protest the need to stop the violence in Chicago. “It’s time for clergy, church members, organizations, students, teachers and community leaders to step out of the boundaries of their four walls to come out and pray for the problems of the community, Hannah says. But Prayer On The 9” is not pastor Hannah’s first direct involvement in helping reform the lives of black people in the community. Before receiving his calling, an event he describes as “the greatest joy” of his life, Pastor Hannah made a career of changing lives early on. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal Justice from Alabama State

University, he served as a Juvenile Probation Officer in Cook County where he impacted the lives of young adults. Hannah was also able to make an impact as a youth Pastor for a local church for many years. Evangelizing with a focus on urban youth for years also created opportunities to perfect his calling as the shepherd of a remarkable organization that would later become New Life. Additionally, Hannah is the previous Executive Director of the Inner-City Youth Spring Break Conference (IYSBC), which under his leadership grew exponentially. In addition to his role as the Senior Pastor of New Life Covenant Church, he shared his talent in the name of Jesus when he hosted a daily morning radio program on WGRB AM in Chicago for 13 years. The show, entitled “The John Hannah Morning Show” aired on Inspiration 1390AM and was the #1 rated gospel radio program in the country. Additionally, Hannah is the recipient of the Stellar Award for Gospel Radio Announcer of the Year. Pastor Hannah says he lacks a strong sense of self-centeredness and that claim is evidenced both through his easy-going approach to strangers as well as his disarming approach with the young people to whom he ministers. “I am able to work well with young people because I’m relatable, approachable, touchable. I don’t believe the hype about myself and that keeps me accessible and gives me relatability with young people,” he says. While he was never shy as a public speaker, Pastor Hannah does admit that he brought with him a few butterflies when he first started preaching. It wasn’t the act of speaking itself that gave him the jitters, but it was more about what speaking from the pulpit means, he explains. “I’d never had the responsibility of feeding God’s people. That is a great responsibility, (knowing) that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word. I have a responsibility of feeding these people spiritually and building their faith up,” he says. Pastor Hannah began his service to God in the Oakwood community with a Thursday Pastor John F. Hannah, Senior Pastor at New Life Covenant Church Southeast

NationwideRally On May 22, the faith community rallied in a nationwide, interfaith effort to address smoking and tobacco use in the African American community. Deemed No Menthol Sunday, the observance day called faith leaders around the country to educate congregants about how the tobacco industry targets the African American community in marketing

mentholated tobacco products. According to The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 80 percent of adult African Americans who smoke choose menthols. Studies also show that while African Americans try more often than white people to stop smoking, they are less successful. For more information, visit www.naatpn.org.

night bible study. From there, it was on to the Charles Hayes Center and Martin Luther King (MLK) High School on 45th and Drexel Boulevard where for four or five years, the church really began to flourish. So much so, that Pastor Hannah and his congregation were able to purchase a building in the Grand Crossing community on 78th and Dobson. “We were able to raise the money and it’s what I call a ‘God lend’ because it was such a greater need in the Grand Crossing Community than there was in the Kenwood Oakland Community where MLK High School is located,” said Hannah. From there, the ministry has expanded and the church was able to purchase over 44 pieces of property. NLC uses the properties to reinforce services that are sorely lacking in the community such as providing childcare at 75th and Greenwood, the largest daycare center on Chicago’s South Side. Today, New Life Covenant Southeast nears membership of approximately 20,000. The unwavering passion for life transformation in the lives of urban youth is evident with over 70% of the church population between the ages of 18 and 35. While the numbers suggest

a mega church sized atmosphere, the spirit of the house and its members promote a family environment, committed to serving God and the community. In his first published book, What to Do While You’re Waiting, Pastor Hannah bases the theme on his personal experience of waiting for God’s plan to unfold, rather than stepping out ahead of Him. In September 2015, Hannah released his second published book Desperate for Jesus. Within the first week, it reached the #1 rating on Amazon’s new releases. Pastor Hannah serves on the Human Resource Board for the City of Chicago and the Civic Consulting Alliance for the Chicago Public Schools providing needed insight. He is married to Anna Hannah, his wife of over 20 years who also serves alongside him. She is dedicated to supporting his vision and the mission of NLC. Exceeding the boundaries to serve the community has been a big part of Hannah’s life mission. Sometimes crossing those boundaries has meant laying down in the middle of 79th Street, but for Hannah, it’s all a matter of faith. Lisette Gushiniere contributed to this story.

L’Oréal USA Program Offers Professional Guidance for Young Black Women

F

or one week during Spring semester break, L’Oréal USA hosted 10 high school and 28 college students at its Fifth Avenue headquarters as part of its support for the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women’s annual Role Model Program which allows young women to learn practical workplace skills and to shadow professional women in their chosen careers. “Our theme this year was ‘Engage, Educate, Empower’,” said Cecilia Nelson, L’Oréal’s Assistant Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion. “One of L’Oréal USA’s core values is support for programs that empower women and girls.” L’Oréal USA’s initial grant to the Coalition in 1999 enabled the expansion of the Role Model program beyond the borough of Manhattan, into Brooklyn and Queens, to students of Medgar Evers College and Queens College. The program has further expanded to include York College, LaGuardia Community College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice and now also includes high school students from Women’s Academy of Excellence in the Bronx and Ayana GEMS a professional development group. “In addition to our multi-year partnership, we are proud to have awarded more than $15,000 in scholarships annually to the Role Model program students,” Ms. Nelson noted. “We had another exceptional program this year and from the early feedback of the participants, we have definitely exceeded our goal of helping these young women to be their best selves and to embrace their power as they chart their unique paths,” said Avalyn Simon, President of the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women. The students participate in an intensive series of professional and personal development workshops to expose them to the realities of the workplace. During the week, the college students spend two full days with mentors while the high school students attend cultural presentations, which this year included visits to the National Museum of the American Indian, WBLS-FM, and an “Immersion” at ESSENCE magazine. The students also screened “The Dinner Table,” a documentary intended to redefine the narrative for women of color in media, and they participated in a panel discussion with the film’s director Asha Boston. The Role Model program has some notable success stories among former mentees who return to the annual event to encourage and provide an example of the benefit of the program to the students. Natalee Facey, an advertising professional who participated in the

Role Model Program in 2010 spoke at the opening ceremony; Raven Robinson, also a 2010 participant, was a panelist following the documentary screening and Kemoy Harris, MD who participated in 2007, addressed the young women at the closing ceremony. The 2016 program began with “Have A Beautiful Day,” a skin care, hair care and make-up presentation featuring L’Oréal USA brands Carol’s Daughter, Soft Sheen Carson, Garnier and Maybelline New York, followed by a “Dining Etiquette” workshop facilitated by L’Oréal’s Director of Food Services and Event Planning, Aleksandar Kiprovski. On succeeding days, L’Oréal USA hosted interactive workshops and presentations on “Dress for Success” presented by Keara Richardson, an attorney and fashion consultant; Social Networking: “Brand You,” presented by Shanice Parker, CEO, Blitz Productions; and “Money Matters,” presented by Sandy Smith of Say Yes Media; and “The Dinner Table” Documentary workshop by Asha Boston, President and CEO of Passion Fruit Vineyard Productions. Special guest appearances were made by popular fashion and beauty bloggers Claire Sulmers founder of Fashion Bomb Daily and Deepica Mutyala of Deepicam.com. The week of workshops and job shadowing culminated with a closing ceremony, program review and scholarship presentation including a keynote address from Jo-Ann D. Rolle, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Business at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York who noted that, ‘often individuals give up too easily.’ She recalled her personal struggles, almost failing out of high school, taking ten years to complete a doctorate in Economics while working a fulltime job, caring for her family and running a business. She said that she never expected life to be fair or for the playing field to be level and advised the young women not to give up: “Don’t stop short of your blessing by giving up too soon.” She encouraged them to search deep inside themselves for their competitive advantage, to discover their personal strength and assets and to leverage it for success. Home Safety Month: New Ways to Protect Your Family

(StatePoint) While you may think of smart home technolo gy as a convenience — something to save you a few steps of walking between the couch and the nearest light switch, smart home offerings also include important preventative measures that can help you protect not only your valuables, but your home itself and everyone in it. June, which is Home Safety Month, is a great opportunity to learn how to use new technology in order to help protect your fami ly. * Beyond the Burglar: The first thing that comes to mind when most people think about home security is almost certainly burglary. But intruders aren’t the only thing you have to worry about entering your home. Water damage is the second most com mon cause of property loss and accounts for a quarter or more of homeowner’s insurance claims. A good early detection device, such as a ZWave flood sensor, could be the difference between a damp inconvenience and a soaking wet catastrophe in your home, especially when combined with a smart shutoff valve. * Avoid dangers: Some sensors, like GoControl’s ZWave Door/Window Sensors, for example, are a great way to keep you alerted to potential dangers — especially on days when the kids get home earlier than you do. A few placed judiciously around the house — on liquor or medicine cabinets, for example, or even the knife drawer, are a great way of keeping your mind at ease. And those same sensors placed on entry points could alert you in the event of an invasion. * Deter intruders: When it comes down to it, though, the best way to deal with home invasion is to deter intruders altogether. When you’re out of town for a vacation or business trip, it’s important to make sure your home still looks lived in, and rigid preprogrammed lighting timers aren’t fooling anyone. Newer smart light bulb systems, like BeON Home, go one step fur

there by recording and playing back your daily lighting routines, and even include a sophisticat ed listening system that can respond to a door bell, by turning inside lights on organically, one at a time, exactly the way you would if you were home. Smart home technology is becoming more versatile than ever. To learn more about how it can be used for keeping people, pets and property safe, visit ZWave.com and BeONHome.com for DIY videos, howtos and live customer assistance. While there’s no replacement for a car ing neighbor’s watchful eye, these days there are a great number of ways of taking home security into your own hands — no matter where you are. Smart hubs, combined with sensors in and around the home, can take the worry out of being away from home by alerting you when something goes wrong. With a connected home, you can better keep tabs on your house and keep the things and people in it safe, even when you’re not home. ***** PHOTO SOURCE: (c) bmak Fotolia.com

(StatePoint) No longer must you choose between your lawn and saving water. Experts say there are ways to save both water and money that won’t hurt your turf. “We often see sprinklers watering side walks and drives, running during rain, or sending water down the drain from leaky heads,” says Josh Friell, Ph. D, senior agronomist of The Toro Company’s Center for Advanced Turf Technology.”The good news is there are simple, cost effective actions homeowners can take to save up to 30 percent in outdoor water usage alone.” Friell recommends these lawncare water ing tips:

First Things First Most timed sprinklers water in the early morning, without homeowner attention. At the begin ning of the season, run each zone briefly during day light hours to see how the system is operating. Look for broken lines or damaged sprinkler heads, and inspect spray patterns to ensure water isn’t wasted. When to Water Experts suggest watering deeply and infrequently. This helps wet the entire root zone and encourages deeper root growth, which helps the lawn better tolerate mild to moderate drought. It is best to water in the early morning around 4 to 5 a.m., as this gives lawns time to absorb the moisture and prevents

evaporation due to daytime heat. How Much to Water During summer, your grass should receive between 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water weekly, including natural precipitation. Water requirements vary by turf variety, local weather conditions, and site conditions such as shade. Your local university extension office can be a good source of information to assist in understanding local conditions. The total water applied can be determined by placing a rain gauge or empty tuna cans around your yard prior to an irrigation cycle. Another option is to install a wireless soil moisture sensor, like the Toro Precision Soil Sensor, which fits almost any controller and installs in minutes. This helps eliminate guess work by continuously monitoring soil moisture levels to prevent the system from overwatering. Limit Water Intake Friell says a general rule to keep in mind is that turfgrass does better when managed on the dry side rather than wet. When soil is constantly wet, grass roots are deprived of oxygen and may become more susceptible to disease. When in Drought Avoid lawn mowing during heat and drought. Lawns under such stress have limited ability to recover from mowing and can be damaged even more. Instead, mow after a rainfall or irrigation day. Finally , maintaining higher mowing heights will help turf tolerate the heat and drought of summer. Doing so also requires less frequent mowing, which means more time to enjoy your lawn!

Water Rebates Many cities and water agencies across the U.S. offer water conservation and rebate programs to homeowners to encourage adoption of more efficient irrigation solutions.
