AMMONS CELEBRATES NEW FUNDING FOR CHAMPAIGN COUNTY

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Committed to advancing local services and improving infrastructure in her communities, State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is celebrating recent funding for Champaign County’s Apollo Industrial Park made possible by Ammons’ support for Governor Pritzker’s Regional Site Readiness Program.

“I’m pleased that one of Champaign County’s busiest business hubs is receiving grant money, which will be dedicated to finetuning Apollo Industrial Park’s wastewater system,” said Ammons. “When we signal to businesses that we home top-notch warehouse functionality, we give them the assurance that they’ll thrive here — leading to job growth and tangible economic benefits for Champaign-Urbana residents.”

The Champaign County Economic Development Corporation will use the $150,000 award to study wastewater engineering for 301 acres at Apollo Industrial Park, which is home to distribution hubs of over 26 businesses, inauding FedEx and Caterpillar. Wastewater engineering involves designing and constructing water treatment and sewage systems to remove pollutants from water before it is returned to streams, rivers, or used for irrigation.

Ammons voted YES for House Bill 4582 and House Bill 3551 in the last legislative session, which authorized the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to implement the Regional Site Readiness Program for infrastructure improvements to prepare areas around Illinois for future development.

BALLY’S CHICAGO CASINO LAUNCHES ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING EMPLOYEE TRAINING PROGRAM

CHICAGO, Ill. – Bally’s Chicago Casino is taking an aggressive step toward fighting human trafficking by launching a comprehensive antihuman trafficking employee training program. In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Bally’s Chicago paired the program launch with a “Give $5, Get $10” charitable contribution campaign benefitting the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE), where customers received free play for donating to the local charity throughout the month of January.

The extensive training program educates employees in weekly sessions on how trafficking might be present in the surrounding community, trained team members on possible trafficking indicators they might encounter within the casino and empowered them to respond appropriately if they suspect trafficking activity is present. By raising awareness across all departments and encouraging all employees to actively help address the threat of human trafficking, Bally’s Chicago is committed to creating a culture of responsibility that helps tackle one of the world’s fastest-growing crimes.

“As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we were pleased to launch our Chicago anti-human trafficking awareness program,” said Monica Scott, Bally’s Chicago Vice President of Community Engagement. “Knowing that just one person can make a big impact, team members will use the variety of tools in their role to ensure trafficking is not present in our property and Bally’s will continue to encourage a culture of compliance with our internal reporting policies. With Bally’s Chicago’s launch of the program, we believe that the progressive initiative will help fight human trafficking in each community we serve.”

The “Give $5, Get $10” charitable contribution campaign benefitted CAASE and was available to Bally Rewards members each Monday in January. Players donated to receive free play based on Tier: Pro: Up to 1x per day - $5 donation for $10 Free Play Star: Up to 2x per day - $10 donation for $20 Free Play

Superstar: Up to 3x per day - $15 donation for $30 Free Play

Legend: Up to 4x per day - $20 donation for $40 Free Play

Bally’s Chicago Casino and customer donations generated a $5,000 contribution to directly support CAASE’s work to end all forms of sexual exploitation in Chicago.

Queen’s Initiative Seeks To Improve The Health of Black Women

Continued from page 1

Coupled with her concern for social and economic injustices, she Coupled with her concern for social and economic injustices, she decided she wanted to go into public health, with a goal to eliminate health disparities.

The Queen’s Initiative for Women’s Health is a series of health equity workshops that are sponsored by the Chicago Department of Public Health. The goal is to help promote health for Black women through education, information sharing, as well as providing access to health screenings and health testing, in safe spaces.

As the lead for the Queen’s Initiative for Women’s Health, Green said the goal was to provide resources to women of childbearing age. She said that the community provided feedback that intergenerational engagement was helpful, and they included all women. She said that at times when the Queen’s Initiative has hosted workshops, men have come to participate and receive information. It resulted in couples being able to get tested for HIV and STIs. She said it is a powerful time to inform people about their health.

and share that information with their clients.

Green said the workshops cover STIs, HIV, diet and nutrition, heart health, breast health, blood pressure and glucose screenings, as well as hair and nail health. She said with that knowledge, it helps improve Black women’s health by providing access to necessary care. With people being uninsured or underinsured, having access to information and testing is useful. She said it is important for people to take care of their health from every angle in a holistic approach.

Green said that public health is important in the Black community because access to health care and quality of care drives the gap in life expectancy, and public health has tools that are useful to the Black community to address those inequities. She said she is very concerned about health in the Black community, as are the other people who are in public health.

“We make every effort to ensure the services are available and accessible to the Black community,” she said.

The first workshop took place in 2024 on the West side, with more than 200 women in attendance. The second workshop took place in Bronzeville, with more than 100 women who participated. In December 2024, there was an event that focused on educating men and women in the health and beauty industry about HIV, STI, prevention and services, as well as other health services. Some of the participants from the December 2024 workshop expressed interest in being health ambassadors. They will be able to receive information about health and wellness and interventions

Green added that with hospitals and clinics closing in the Black community, public health clinics continue to serve the community as much as possible, while also making the services as accessible as possible, whether that means non-traditional hours or outreach in the community. The goal is to ensure the community knows that they are available to address the community’s needs. With that in mind, Green said there are public health clinics that will be changing their names to include the communities they are located in.

“The goal is to always let folks know that we are here for you; the public health clinics, the public health staff, we’re all here for you,” she said.

Chicago Public Schools Launches 2025 Annual School Food Survey

CHICAGO — Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is excited to announce the launch of our annual school food survey for parents and students. This survey serves as a valuable tool for gathering feedback on the District’s free meal program. By collecting input through survey results, food tastings, and focus groups, CPS is able to enhance participation in school meals. This is achieved by offering menu items that align with the preferences and needs of CPS students and families, while also meeting federal and local nutrition and operational requirements.

All students and parents/guardians from District-managed schools are encouraged to participate in the survey, which can be accessed here. This feedback is crucial in shaping the future of CPS school meals.

“We have intensified our efforts to engage with our students, to achieve the optimal balance between health and flavor,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “By listening to the voices of our students, who are the most important members of our District, Nutrition Support Services can make informed adjustments to our meal offerings.”

Engaging students in providing feedback is essential for improving CPS breakfast and lunch menus. In 2022, the Office of Nutrition Support Services (NSS) organized and executed 40 tastings throughout the District. The tastings featured a diverse array of culinary delights, including blueberry smoothies, baked potatoes with chili and cheese, Asian noodle salad, chicken ham frittata, pierogies, cheeseburger pizza, breakfast tacos, veggie pasta salad, BBQ tofu, chilaquiles, and more.

For instance, in the fall of 2023, CPS conducted a food survey at Mildred Lavizzo Elementary School, where 250 students sampled Chilaquiles Rojo with Eggs and a Chicken

Biscuit Tostada. Furthermore, 110 students from Scammon and Owens elementary schools had the opportunity to try a new product, half-popped popcorn. Based on the favorable reviews from students, these items have been incorporated into the school menus this winter.

Building on the success of these tastings, an additional 19 tastings were carried out during the summer of 2023 in preparation for the upcoming 2023-24 School Year. The feedback gathered from these tastings have played a pivotal role in the District’s decision to introduce a variety of new breakfast and lunch options for CPS students throughout the academic year.

These initiatives not only gather valuable feedback but also demonstrate CPS’s commitment to meeting the needs and preferences of students in their school meals. The Office of Nutrition Support Services remains dedicated to providing students with nutritious and delicious meals that cater to their diverse tastes and dietary needs. Through ongoing tastings and feedback mechanisms, we aim to continuously enhance the dining experience for all students in the District. The School Food Survey will remain open until midnight on Friday, March 1, 2025, and the information collected will guide school food decisions for the upcoming school year and beyond. The District’s NSS team will offer technology items as prizes to be raffled off to the elementary and high schools with the highest student participation in the survey.

Since increasing student outreach and engagement in the District’s meal program, over 50 new menu items have been added. Student participation at breakfast has increased by three percent and by four percent at lunch compared to last year.

If you fall into the group without a retirement plan that works for an employer that sponsors a retirement plan - for, what are you waiting?

Often employer sponsored plans match your contributions. That is like getting a bonus. Why would you not want to receive a bonus?

If your employer doesn’t offer a retirement plan, I encourage you to consider starting an Independent Retirement Account (IRA). There are several types of IRAs and it’s important that you get the one that best serves your needs. Ask an expert.

Mutual funds can serve as the basis of your retirement plan. There are so many types of mutual funds, all having their own benefits to meet the need of the investor. Make sure that you get an account that will not nickel-and-dime you with fees. Ask an expert to help you choose a fund that aligns with your needs.

An increasingly popular place to put money away for retirement is in an Indexed Universal Life (IUL) Insurance Policy. Of all the options for a private retirement plan an IUL has the greatest flexibility. It allows you to benefit from the stock market indirectly without the risk. Like a stock market account, you can adjust how much and how often you pay into your policy, there are also great tax benefits that come with IULs, and if you should die before you retire your beneficiary will receive a death benefit. Now that you know, I hope that you are now ready to explore the type of retirement account that best serves your needs.

Bye for now, Bren.

The Path Forwarded Framed by Isaiah 40:

28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?

These days are turbulent and trying. There is a concerted effort to destabilize and stoke fear with uncertainty and chaos. The very foundation of our society is being inspected for dismantling while those in the position to stop this unraveling do nothing or acquiesce to the orders given. This country’s path towards stability, equity, and sustainability will grow narrower and more obscure from here.

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Our power lies in our willingness to collectively act on our desire for better. The coalition that emerges in this moment will be one stripped of performative allyship, racial and gender hierarchies. There is no way forward that maintains the status quo where the veneer of progress and identity politics is allowed to mask the reach of white supremacy and America’s caste system. We will need to deeply examine the fabric of this country with a spirit of naked authenticity ready to remake society in a process akin to South Africa’s truth and reconciliation commission.

31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Though the arc of history bends towards justice, if we are to experience that justice in our lifetime we must act. Act as a coalition of individuals who have each done the work to confront the hard truths of this country and our place in it. The power to compel righteousness is ours and we are strengthened by our faith and hope.

Northern Illinois Community Initiatives announces new name: Nicor Illinois Community Investment

CHICAGO — Northern Illinois Community Initiatives, one of the foundations supported by Nicor Gas, is proud to announce its new name as Nicor Illinois Community Investment (NICI). NICI was formed with contributions from Nicor Gas and its parent Southern Company Gas in 2021 to directly support economic impact in under-resourced communities in Northern Illinois. NICI’s new name signifies the growing impact of the foundation since its inception, retaining the signature logo and shorthand acronym that are familiar to its partners, while more closely collaborating with Nicor Gas in economic and community development across Northern Illinois.

NICI fosters year-over-year growth by helping nonprofits, small businesses, entrepreneurs and community organizations establish strong foundations for continued success. The change to Nicor Illinois Community Investment represents NICI’s dedication to enduring, substantial contributions — an impact that NICI seeks not just to initiate, but sustain.

“Since our inception, NICI’s investments in small business and community resilience across Northern Illinois cultivates economic opportunity that has otherwise been inaccessible to communities like South Suburban Chicago, Rockford and Joliet — communities that have seen opportunities and resources lessen and shift throughout recent decades,” says Tovah McCord, Executive Director. “NICI provides the building blocks for these communities to thrive.”

Each year, NICI commits $1 million through $100,000 grants for high-impact community projects and other programs that support small businesses, entrepreneurs and other critical support for

LIVE TO PLAY

communities in need of targeted assistance. NICI’s impact addresses three main areas: Economic mobility through programs designed to empower individuals and improve financial stability, commercial development through investments in local businesses that strengthen community infrastructure and small business support through resources and funding for small businesses, particularly those led by women and minority entrepreneurs.

“For 160 years, Nicor Gas has been an essential part of the Northern Illinois community, supporting its development and understanding its unique needs,” says Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas and NICI board chair. “The name change reflects the alignment of NICI’s philanthropic goals and the needs of Nicor Gas customers. We are excited about the lasting, positive impact that will result from this collaboration.”

NICI’s investment strategy is informed by insights from local leaders and community members, ensuring that its initiatives meet the evolving needs of Northern Illinois communities. NICI’s programs remain flexible and responsive to the unique challenges and goals of each community it serves. Through collaboration with Nicor Gas and Southern Company Gas, Nicor Illinois Community Investment will continue building on its achievements, scaling its impact to support a more economically resilient and equitable Illinois. NICI looks forward to sharing more of the foundation’s exciting plans for 2025 and outlook for the future of the communities it serves.

JUSTICE FOR THE HONORABLE MARCUS MOSIAH GARVEY IS ACCEPTABLE

President of The Marcus Garvey Institute, UNIA & ACL First Vice President Garvey/Nkrumah Memorial Progressive Division 429 Former UNIA & ACL Minister of Education, Former Third Assistant President General, Former Candidate for UNIA & ACL President General, Graduate of the Course of African Philosophy, Lead Facilitator of Garveyism Education at the Marcus Garvey Drillers Foundation Schools in Nigeria, Co-facilitator on the History of the UNIA & ACL

The Honorable Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (Born November 20, 1942) the fortysix President of the United States of America, on January 19, 2025 Posthumously Pardons the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey (Born August 17, 1887, Died June 10, 1940).

He gave deserving posthumous justice, for the Jamaican born, founder and first elected President General (August 1920) of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL founded July 20, 1914) with this pardon.

The first reasons he deserved a Pardon was that for twenty-eight years the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey served as an honest, truthful, self-less, elected, not self appointed, leader of the UNIA & ACL.

Secondly, the UNIA & ACL has the highest beneficent values as a social, friendly, humanitarian, charitable, educational, institutional, constructive and expansive society" (UNIA & ACL Constitutions Preamble), believing in the brotherhood and sisterhood of men and women and the "Fatherhood of God".

Thirdly, his work world-wide guiding Africans and People of African descent into a confraternity of 400 million, is now 1.7 billion people who still need his teachings to inspire us. He was not a man of hate but dedicated to promoting pride, love, and nationhood, leading to the first and largest mass movement of Black people in the United States, earning him the title for centuries to come, as the "Father of Black Nationalism."

He organized six million Black people into the UNIA & ACL under the motto of One God One Aim One Destiny, before he was wrongly imprisoned, which is more than 15th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (Born February 12, 1809, Died April 15, 1865) emancipated from enslavement with his signing of the Emancipation Proclamation January 1, 1863, and the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.

Encouraging President Joe Biden to sign this Pardon, less than a week before he left office, were many known and unknown men and women who are among those who for over 40 years have campaigned, wrote research papers, circulated petitions and marched on the streets in major cities of the United States to prove his innocents and earn his Pardon.I will start with my mentor the Antigua born, Dr. Charles L. James (Born April 26, 1905, Died August 16, 1990) the highest graduate of the first class of the 'Course of African Philosophy' taught directly by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey in 1937.

In 1947 Dr. James co-founded the Isaiah Morter Division 401, then in 1974 he formed another Division of the UNIA & ACL in Chicago called the Garvey/Nkrumah Memorial Progressive Progressive Division 429 which he served as President and I as his student of

African Philosophy, until his last days.

student of the 'Course of African Philosophy, I can imagine: four-hundred million Africans and people of African descent would be crying tears of joy; at over 1400 Liberty-Halls filled with Division and Chapter members of the UNIA & ACL world wide waving their red, black and green flags; Church-bells would be heard ringing from every African Orthodox Church and Cathedral in every country; a Twenty-One-Gun Salute often reserved for heads of state by the Universal African Legions firing canons in cities with large African populations; out of universal respect, every private and public school, academy, college and university housing black youth would be closed; the next business day of the week January 20th would be treated like a national holiday with parades in every major city; and his loyal and faithful 2nd wife Amy Jacques Garvey and their two little boys, Marcus Garvey lll, and Julius Winston Garvey would be ushered into a waiting motorcade driven by the women of the Universal African Motor Corps.

Lastly, the two sons, the late Hon. Marcus Garvey Jr. (Born September 17, 1930, Died December 8, 2020) UNIA & ACL President General, and the youngest son, Dr. Julius Winston Garvey, have never stopped trying to gain a Posthumous Pardon for their father.

Likewise, hats off to U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clark (D-NY) for all the efforts with House Resolution 148 and that she has made and will make along with Dr. Julius Garvey to get an exoneration for the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. As momentum continues to grow with more and more desiring to clear his father’s name, Dr. Garvey counts on U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke and the rest of us to continue in this noble work with him.

With the tint of criminality lifted off of him by the Pardon from the President of the United States, and the Prime Minister of Jamaica where he was also once falsely arrested, showing in both cases he was wrongfully arrested and imprisoned, a new course and direction will produce a different reality to what we see today.

I met him in 1975 shortly before he succeeded President General Thomas W. Harvey and then go on to serve as President General from 1978 until his passing at age eighty-five in 1990.

As the Editor of the 'Garvey's Voice' newspaper published in Chicago, Mr. James replicated the 'Negro World' and 'Black Man Magazine' once published by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. He put regular reports in the paper that mentioned all efforts towards the exoneration and pardon of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and his philosophy.

The 'Garvey's Voice' reported how Senator Jesse Helms (born Oct. 18, 1921, died July 4, 2008) wrote about connecting the call for a Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National holiday with a Pardon for the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey (Amendment number 2339). Around October 18, 1983 Helms wrote, "Among the many things that were done in connection with the King debate, I submitted an amendment, which unfortunately was rejected to posthumously recommend granting a pardon to Marcus Garvey."

Excerpts from the Congressional record shows Senator Helms for whatever reason, writing in section 3. - "Since Marcus Garvey is known as the Father of Black Nationalism; and Since Marcus Garvey was a major leader in the development in the United States of Black consciousness; and Since the conviction of Marcus Garvey in 1923 occurred in an atmosphere charged with emotionalism and publicity; and Since the excessiveness of the sentence was recognized by President Coolidge in 1927 in commuting that sentence; "Therefore, let it be stated that it is the sense of Congress that the President should remove this cloud over the reputation of Marcus Garvey by granting a full pardon of any crimes of which he may have been convicted."

That was followed by Congressman John Conyers and Congressman Charles Rangel submitted a resolution for the exoneration of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

The City Commission of the City of Lauderhill submitted a resolution for his (Marcus Garvey) pardon/exhoneration. The Court of Common Council of the city of Hartford submitted a resolution for his pardon/exoneration. The youngest son, Dr. Garvey (Born August 16, 1933present), a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, organized the Justice4Garvey (there is a book published by the same name) movement around 2016, aimed at getting his father posthumously exonerated, while also keeping intact the unwavering pride of the Garvey name.

Had this full and unconditional pardon taken place while the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey lived, when it should have, then as a second generation student of the 'Course of African Philosophy, I can imagine:

`Had this full and unconditional pardon taken place while the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey lived, when it should have, then as a second generation

First, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Grarvey's second generation of students of the course of African Philosophy taught by students from 1937 will be reminded of what he said about his mission from the 'High God' and look in the Holy Bible, Matthew Chapter 28: 19-20, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

I can imagine preparations for an International Convention in Africa, by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey's students and his grand children as great and broadly participated in as was done at the first International convention in the year 1920.

We will have to put together a $2,000,000,000 budget to launch the program of African Redemption, African Unification and the fulfilling of the slogan, "Africa For The Africans, Those At Home And those Abroad.” Our UNIA & ACL membership will have to rise to 200 million members working in 20,000 UNIA & ACL Divisions in the next 10 years, headed by men and women who embrace unadulterated Garveyism.

A special thanks goes out to some of those who fought for the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey's pardon and exoneration such as Geoffrey Philp, I Jabulani Tafari, Attallah Shabazz, Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan, Priest Douggie, Miguel Murphy, Yaw Frederick L. Davis, Jean M. Garvey, Kwesi Mfume, Jamaal Abdul-Alim, His Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi, Babatunde OlaideMesewaku, Mwariama Kamau, Jasmine Rand, Justin Hansford, Ras Don Rico, Dr. Ron Daniels, Reverend Rita McDonald, Melvin Foote, Dermoth Brown, Paul Coates and Nkechi Taifa.
