AMMONS CELEBRATES NEW FUNDING FOR CHAMPAIGN COUNTY
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Committed to advancing local services and improving infrastructure in her communities, State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is celebrating recent funding for Champaign County’s Apollo Industrial Park made possible by Ammons’ support for Governor Pritzker’s Regional Site Readiness Program.
“I’m pleased that one of Champaign County’s busiest business hubs is receiving grant money, which will be dedicated to finetuning Apollo Industrial Park’s wastewater system,” said Ammons. “When we signal to businesses that we home top-notch warehouse functionality, we give them the assurance that they’ll thrive here — leading to job growth and tangible economic benefits for Champaign-Urbana residents.”
The Champaign County Economic Development Corporation will use the $150,000 award to study wastewater engineering for 301 acres at Apollo Industrial Park, which is home to distribution hubs of over 26 businesses, inauding FedEx and Caterpillar. Wastewater engineering involves designing and constructing water treatment and sewage systems to remove pollutants from water before it is returned to streams, rivers, or used for irrigation.
Ammons voted YES for House Bill 4582 and House Bill 3551 in the last legislative session, which authorized the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to implement the Regional Site Readiness Program for infrastructure improvements to prepare areas around Illinois for future development.
BALLY’S CHICAGO CASINO LAUNCHES ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING EMPLOYEE TRAINING PROGRAM
CHICAGO, Ill. – Bally’s Chicago Casino is taking an aggressive step toward fighting human trafficking by launching a comprehensive antihuman trafficking employee training program. In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Bally’s Chicago paired the program launch with a “Give $5, Get $10” charitable contribution campaign benefitting the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE), where customers received free play for donating to the local charity throughout the month of January.
The extensive training program educates employees in weekly sessions on how trafficking might be present in the surrounding community, trained team members on possible trafficking indicators they might encounter within the casino and empowered them to respond appropriately if they suspect trafficking activity is present. By raising awareness across all departments and encouraging all employees to actively help address the threat of human trafficking, Bally’s Chicago is committed to creating a culture of responsibility that helps tackle one of the world’s fastest-growing crimes.
“As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we were pleased to launch our Chicago anti-human trafficking awareness program,” said Monica Scott, Bally’s Chicago Vice President of Community Engagement. “Knowing that just one person can make a big impact, team members will use the variety of tools in their role to ensure trafficking is not present in our property and Bally’s will continue to encourage a culture of compliance with our internal reporting policies. With Bally’s Chicago’s launch of the program, we believe that the progressive initiative will help fight human trafficking in each community we serve.”
The “Give $5, Get $10” charitable contribution campaign benefitted CAASE and was available to Bally Rewards members each Monday in January. Players donated to receive free play based on Tier: Pro: Up to 1x per day - $5 donation for $10 Free Play
Star: Up to 2x per day - $10 donation for $20 Free Play
Superstar: Up to 3x per day - $15 donation for $30 Free Play
Legend: Up to 4x per day - $20 donation for $40 Free Play
Bally’s Chicago Casino and customer donations generated a $5,000 contribution to directly support CAASE’s work to end all forms of sexual exploitation in Chicago.
South Side Healthy Community Organization’s Health Care Model Aims To Improve Access
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
The South Side Healthy Community Organization (SSHCO) was founded in 2021 to close the health equity gap on the South side of Chicago. The State of Illinois was looking to fund organizations and programs that were addressing health equity. The South Side Healthy Community Organization won an award to be funded up to five years, with the goal of being sustainable in a five-year period.
Thirteen health care organizations –hospital systems, safety net hospitals and federally qualified health centers – came together to develop a model to improve access to care on the South Side of Chicago in 15 zip codes: 60609, 60615, 60616, 60617, 60619, 60620, 60621, 60628, 60629, 60632, 60636, 60637, 60643, 60649 and 60653.
Kimberly Hobson, CEO of the South Side Healthy Community Organization, said the Healthy Community Model adds doctors, nurses and specialists; addresses chronic and preventive care management; expands care coordination and provider collaboration; connects residents to social drivers of health resources –food, transportation and housing; and built a health information exchange, which allows the 13 partners to share clinical information, with the goal of improving wellness on the South side.
workers to engage with community members to ensure they are able to access necessary health care served and resources.
The SSHCO has four pillars: To increase and enhance primary care and dramatically improve maternal and infant care and health, address the chronic disease and behavioral needs of the community, address care coordination needs and social determinant needs and preventative care, and to transform transition care and share data with a connected care technology platform.
The services provided by the South Side Healthy Community Organization are accessible to those individuals in the 15 zip codes who receive Medicaid benefits, as well as uninsured patients in those zip codes. Care coordinators, which includes community health workers and nurse care coordinators, are deployed across 22 South side clinics and emergency rooms talking to patients, scheduling visits and reminding them about their medical ap-
pointments.
“We have an issue with access. We are getting individuals in to see their primary care appointments. We have made, over time, about 1,500 connections with these patients to their primary care providers,” Hobson said.
The South Side Healthy Community Organization is also connecting them to and referring the patients to social resources on the South side. Those resources come from community-based organizations that SSHCO provided grants to. The SSCHO has referred more than 7,000 patients to social resources including food, transportation and housing.
SSCHO also supports community members as they navigate the health care system by getting them to their doctors and their specialist, including addressing maternal-fetal medicine. To have the providers that the organization needs in order to increase access, the SSCHO has funded and subsidized 60 primary care and specialty care providers on the South side.
During the two-and-a-half-year period SSCHO has been in operation, the 60 primary and specialty care providers the organization has funded and subsidized have conducted 80,000 additional patient visits. Hobson said this is helping to close the gap around access.
“Our goal was to address the four components of our model. We needed to address access, and in order to do that, we needed to increase the number of providers. Our goal is to subsidize the salaries of 90 new providers and we’re at about 65 at this particular time,” Hobson said.
The SSHCO also has housed 78 families through its housing program, which is a program where individuals are housed for three years. With support, after a three-year period the people in the program will be able to get jobs and sustain their own housing.

ATTORNEY GENERAL KWAME RAOUL SHARES BEST PRACTICES FOR DEVELOPING PREVENTION PROGRAMS
Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul encouraged families, educators and other professionals working with children to plan online safety education programs and share best practices for developing effective programs.
“Safer Internet Day is an opportunity for parents, educators and caregivers to help children and teens be more aware of their online activity and develop responsible online habits. On Safer Internet Day and every day, families and educators should teach and empower children to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. My office has developed best practices that can help when developing effective education programs,” Raoul said. “I am committed to protecting children from online predators and am proud of the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force’s work to protect children and provide online safety education.”
When developing an online safety education program, Raoul recommends families and educators consider these best practices:
Follow a victim-centered approach. Encouraging victims to seek support should be a central goal of all prevention education. Victims are less likely to reach out for support when they feel blamed or shamed. Messaging should indicate that the responsibility for victimization lies with the perpetrator, not the victim.
Assess the effectiveness of prevention programs and adjust when needed. Mechanisms to obtain feedback on presentations and presenters should be put in place to ensure effective and consistent messaging. This may include evaluations from a host agency, supervisor or colleague observations, and feedback from presenters.
Minimize or eliminate fear-based messages. Learning about worst-case outcomes seldom changes youth behavior, because they typically believe it won’t happen to them. Instead, share realistic, age-appropriate examples to help youth identify risks.
and respond to harmful and manipulative behaviors.
Provide internet safety education to parents. A whole-family approach to internet safety includes presentations for parents and youth together. Hearing the same message inspires healthy conversations.
Offer additional resources. This can include materials that allow for a deeper dive into the skill-building components of internet safety or that address related topics, such as healthy relationships, bullying and intimate partner violence prevention.
For more information about planning educational programs, Raoul encourages adults and educators to visit the Attorney General’s website: illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.
Illinois State Legislative Session Kicks Off with Focus on Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support
As the 2025 Illinois state legislative session gets underway, advocates for individuals impacted by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are rallying support for transformative legislation aimed at supporting families and caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is leading the charge with an exciting statewide campaign to amplify the voices of those who have been affected by the disease.
Discuss online risks accurately. Discuss online risks and statistics accurately, and ensure examples are developmentally appropriate and relevant to the audience. Focus on social and emotional consequences and frequently update presentations with current data or popular apps, games and websites.
Stay focused on behavioral goals. Focus on what to do, who to talk with and how to get help if something scary or harmful happens online. Prepare youth for what can happen, what to do if they experience something scary or harmful, how to report and what to expect when reporting.
Encourage a multipronged approach to prevention. Collaborating with stakeholders reinforces a message and increases its effectiveness.
Raoul’s office, with a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, runs the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force that investigates child exploitation crimes and trains law enforcement agencies. The task force receives CyberTips, or online reports of child sexual abuse material, from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Over the last several years, CyberTipline reports have steadily increased. In 2024, reports to the ICAC increased by 11% over 2023.
This year, the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is calling on all Illinois residents to join their effort in advancing nation-leading legislation to assist families and caregivers navigating the complex challenges of Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Building on the success of last year’s efforts, the Chapter is once again organizing a statewide phone call campaign to ensure that the needs of Illinoisans impacted by dementia are heard loud and clear in Springfield.

SACRAMENTO, Calif., PRNewswire
-- Reviver is proud to celebrate Black History Month and the journey of founder, Neville Boston — from creating the world’s first digital license plate to becoming the first Black-founded technology jersey patch partner among the NBA.
This year’s Black History Month is shining a light on African Americans and the intersection of labor with the collective experiences of Black people. For Reviver’s Neville Boston, Black History Month is also an opportunity to reflect on his entrepreneurial journey in building Reviver, and to celebrate the transformative moments to come.
“When I founded Reviver, I didn’t see the RPLATE as a singular solution to one specific problem for today’s world,” said Reviver Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Neville Boston. “What we’re doing is transforming the entire car and driver experience, and we’re designing an ecosystem for the future.”
Of course, being the first of anything has
its challenges, especially as a Black founder disrupting and bringing innovation to a highly regulated industry. Boston approached these challenges through relationship-building, leaning into mentors and investors such as John W. Thompson, former chairman of Microsoft and Allan Warren, and talking with everyone, including consumers and teams at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
“Reviver is built on partnerships and relationships with mentors, other entrepreneurs and investors, state and local governments, and the community,” Boston said. “It’s about building trust and creating something that benefits all involved. Together, we’re pushing the boundaries in how we create solutions that reflect our diverse communities, and we hope it doesn’t stop here. Our goal is to spark change and innovation.”

Do you have a retirement plan? Although the participation rates in employer-sponsored retirement plans among Black workers improved by more than 4% between 2021(40.5%) and 2023 (44.9%), that still means that more than half of us have no retirement plan.
If you fall into the group without a retirement plan that works for an employer that sponsors a retirement plan - for, what are you waiting?
Often employer sponsored plans match your contributions. That is like getting a bonus. Why would you not want to receive a bonus?
Bren Sheriff
If your employer doesn’t offer a retirement plan, I encourage you to consider starting an Independent Retirement Account (IRA). There are several types of IRAs and it’s important that you get the one that best serves your needs. Ask an expert.
Mutual funds can serve as the basis of your retirement plan. There are so many types of mutual funds, all having their own benefits to meet the need of the investor. Make sure that you get an account that will not nickel-and-dime you with fees. Ask an expert to help you choose a fund that aligns with your needs.
An increasingly popular place to put money away for retirement is in an Indexed Universal Life (IUL) Insurance Policy. Of all the options for a private retirement plan an IUL has the greatest flexibility. It allows you to benefit from the stock market indirectly without the risk. Like a stock market account, you can adjust how much and how often you pay into your policy, there are also great tax benefits that come with IULs, and if you should die before you retire your beneficiary will receive a death benefit. Now that you know, I hope that you are now ready to explore the type of retirement account that best serves your needs.
Bye for now, Bren.

The Path Forwarded Framed by Isaiah 40:
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
These days are turbulent and trying. There is a concerted effort to destabilize and stoke fear with uncertainty and chaos. The very foundation of our society is being inspected for dismantling while those in the position to stop this unraveling do nothing or acquiesce to the orders given. This country’s path towards stability, equity, and sustainability will grow narrower and more obscure from here.
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Our power lies in our willingness to collectively act on our desire for better. The coalition that emerges in this moment will be one stripped of performative allyship, racial and gender hierarchies. There is no way forward that maintains the status quo where the veneer of progress and identity politics is allowed to mask the reach of white supremacy and America’s caste system. We will need to deeply examine the fabric of this country with a spirit of naked authenticity ready to remake society in a process akin to South Africa’s truth and reconciliation commission.
31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Though the arc of history bends towards justice, if we are to experience that justice in our lifetime we must act. Act as a coalition of individuals who have each done the work to confront the hard truths of this country and our place in it. The power to compel righteousness is ours and we are strengthened by our faith and hope.
Northern Illinois Community Initiatives announces new name: Nicor Illinois Community Investment
CHICAGO — Northern Illinois Community Initiatives, one of the foundations supported by Nicor Gas, is proud to announce its new name as Nicor Illinois Community Investment (NICI). NICI was formed with contributions from Nicor Gas and its parent Southern Company Gas in 2021 to directly support economic impact in under-resourced communities in Northern Illinois. NICI’s new name signifies the growing impact of the foundation since its inception, retaining the signature logo and shorthand acronym that are familiar to its partners, while more closely collaborating with Nicor Gas in economic and community development across Northern Illinois.
NICI fosters year-over-year growth by helping nonprofits, small businesses, entrepreneurs and community organizations establish strong foundations for continued success. The change to Nicor Illinois Community Investment represents NICI’s dedication to enduring, substantial contributions — an impact that NICI seeks not just to initiate, but sustain.
“Since our inception, NICI’s investments in small business and community resilience across Northern Illinois cultivates economic opportunity that has otherwise been inaccessible to communities like South Suburban Chicago, Rockford and Joliet — communities that have seen opportunities and resources lessen and shift throughout recent decades,” says Tovah McCord, Executive Director. “NICI provides the building blocks for these communities to thrive.”
Each year, NICI commits $1 million through $100,000 grants for high-impact community projects and other programs that support small businesses, entrepreneurs and other critical support for

communities in need of targeted assistance. NICI’s impact addresses three main areas: Economic mobility through programs designed to empower individuals and improve financial stability, commercial development through investments in local businesses that strengthen community infrastructure and small business support through resources and funding for small businesses, particularly those led by women and minority entrepreneurs.
“For 160 years, Nicor Gas has been an essential part of the Northern Illinois community, supporting its development and understanding its unique needs,” says Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas and NICI board chair. “The name change reflects the alignment of NICI’s philanthropic goals and the needs of Nicor Gas customers. We are excited about the lasting, positive impact that will result from this collaboration.”
NICI’s investment strategy is informed by insights from local leaders and community members, ensuring that its initiatives meet the evolving needs of Northern Illinois communities. NICI’s programs remain flexible and responsive to the unique challenges and goals of each community it serves. Through collaboration with Nicor Gas and Southern Company Gas, Nicor Illinois Community Investment will continue building on its achievements, scaling its impact to support a more economically resilient and equitable Illinois. NICI looks forward to sharing more of the foundation’s exciting plans for 2025 and outlook for the future of the communities it serves.
