PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP MEETS WITH BLACK CELEBRITIES By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor) In an effort to show that he plans to be the “president for all Americans” and to bolster support in the Black community, President-elect Donald Trump recently met with a number of Black celebrities and businessmen including rapper Kanye West, billionaire Robert Johnson and NFL Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Ray Lewis. Unlike so many other visitors to Trump Tower, Trump greeted West in the lobby; members of the media snapped pictures and yelled questions. “We’ve been friends for a long time,” Trump told reporters at the end of the meeting. “We discussed life.” With rumors swirling that Trump is having difficulty finding someone to perform at his January 20, 2017 inaugural, there was unconfirmed speculation that West may serve as some form of entertainment at an inaugural event. In a separate meeting, Trump talked to Brown and Lewis about economic empowerment in the Black community and urban development. Trump recently selected famed neurosurgeon and presidential candidate Ben Carson to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. After the meeting, Brown said that he fell in love with Trump, “because he really talks about helping African-American, Black people. That’s why I’m here.” Brown continued: “When he goes through what he went through to become the president, he got my admiration, because no one gave him a chance.” CNN contributor and former HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill expressed concerns about Brown’s comments during a recent segment on the network. “I don’t have a problem with Jim Brown saying, look, we want to do urban development,” said Hill. “We want housing. We want to make demands of you, but to say you ‘fell in love with’ Donald Trump or his platform or his campaign to me is disturbing.” Hill added: “That’s not to suggest that Donald Trump didn’t have any real Black friends. But when [you] look at where his political commitments and economic investments are, they don’t suggest any kind of care for the Black community.” On the same morning of West’s visit the Trump transition team announced that Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson was selected as Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State. Tillerson is yet another businessman with close ties to Russia who has no foreign policy or federal government experience. President Obama once called Kanye West a “jackass”; he was also quick to add that West was talented. Over the years, Trump has been in the company of several African American celebrities including Mike Tyson, Don King and Russell Simmons. Most of those affiliations appear to be related to charity events and other happenings around New York City. So far, Trump has selected Steven Mnuchin for Secretary of Treasury; Elaine Chao for Secretary of Transportation; Wilbur Ross for Secretary of Commerce; Rep. Mike Pompeo as CIA Director; Jeff Sessions for Attorney General; South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as Ambassador to the United Nations; Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education; Rep. Tom Price for Health and Human Services; Ben Carson for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Mick Mulvaney as the director of White House Office of Management and Budget; and Vincent Viola for the Secretary of the Army. For the third time in two years, a large for-profit college has faced charges of defrauding its students. This time the charges stem from promises of jobs and incomes that never materialized. On December 15, the suburban Chicago-based DeVry University agreed to a $100 million settlement to end a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Filed in January, the FTC charged that from 2008 to 2015 the for-profit institution engaged in deceptive marketing and advertising. According to FTC, prospective DeVry students were told in recruitment and in advertising that 90 percent of its graduates secured employment in their chosen fields within six months of matriculation. A second institutional promise was that one year following graduation they would earn incomes that were 15 percent higher than those earned by graduates from other colleges and universities. Under the settlement terms, DeVry will pay $49.4 million in cash to qualifying students who were harmed by the deceptive ads, as well as provide $50.6 million in debt relief. The debt being forgiven includes the full balance owed—$30.35 million—on all unpaid private student loans that DeVry issued to undergraduates between September 2008 and September 2015, and $20.25 million in student debts for items such as tuition, books and lab fees. “When people are making important decisions about their education and their future, they should not be misled by deceptive employment and earnings claims,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. “The FTC has secured compensation for the many students who were harmed, and I am pleased that DeVry is changing its practices.” Once approved by federal courts, DeVry will be required to immediately notify the students who will receive debt relief as well as credit bureaus and collection agencies of the impending debt forgiveness. DeVry will also release transcripts and diplomas previously withheld from students due to outstanding debt, and will cooperate with future requests for diplomas and transcripts and related enrollment or graduation information. This most recent settlement is yet another reminder of how some of the largest for-profit colleges have failed their students and caused them to become indebted without the educational

LOUIS-- The Peiffer Rosca Wolf law firm filed a class action in the Circuit Court for St. Louis County, Missouri, alleging discrimination against two African American female employees in late 2015. The lawsuit alleges that after an African American female employee of the defendants made claims of sexual harassment against a white male assistant manager, she was put on two week unpaid leave, and then multiple African American female employees were fired, including the plaintiffs to the suit. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges “…during the period of Friday’s ‘investigation,’ the assistant manager… who was accused of sexual harassment was promoted to the manager of the Downtown St. Louis Friday’s.” The lawsuit contains eight counts: race discrimination, race by association discrimination, sex discrimination, and retaliatory discharge for each plaintiff. The lawsuit seeks damages including “monetary damages to compensate for lost wages, lost benefits, damage to their personal and professional reputations, emotional distress, and for punitive damages.

Comcast Cable Accepting Proposals for Two New African American Owned Independent Networks Comcast Cable recently announced the company is now accepting proposals for two substantially African American owned, independent networks that it will launch in select Comcast markets by January 2019. The announcement is part of the company’s commitment to launch independently owned and operated networks as part of a series of public interest commitments made by Comcast in connection with the NBCUniversal transaction completed in 2011. Since the NBCUniversal transaction, Comcast has successfully launched over 20 independent networks, doubling the number of independent networks launches that it committed to as part of the transaction. Four of those networks were launched as a result of a public request for channels that satisfied the criteria established in several agreements between Comcast and leading diversity organizations: two African American majority owned networks (ASPiRE and REVOLT) and two Hispanic American operated networks (Baby First Americas and El Rey). Additionally, two substantially Hispanic American owned networks, Kids Central and Primo TV, will launch on Comcast Cable systems beginning in January 2017. “We are looking forward to receiving another round of great proposals as we begin the process to launch two more African American majority owned networks,” said Justin Smith, Senior Vice President of Content Acquisition for Comcast Cable.
