ORDINANCE THAT WOULD GUARANTEE PREDICTABLE WORK HOURS CHICAGO - Aldermen, advocates and workers stood together recently to announce the introduction of the “Chicago Fair Workweek Ordinance,” which would make needed reforms to employer scheduling practices for working people. Sponsored by Progressive Reform Caucus Chair Ald. Scott Waguespack (32), Ald. Toni Foulkes (16) and Ald. Ameya Pawar (47), the Chicago Fair Workweek Ordinance addresses the changing nature of the workforce, especially for hourly and part-time workers hired by major corporations. “Increasingly, major corporate employers have made it common practice to ignore the input and real time needs of their employees in the scheduling process. Scheduling logistics do not just apply to corporate interests: working families deserve to have notice to have autonomy

Sometimes I can’t stay home to help care for my grandmother because I can’t afford to miss a day of work, or risk losing my job. No one should have to be put in that position.” Aisha Meadows, a worker at McDonalds who is part of the Fight for 15 movement, said the ordinance would also be impactful for her. “Sometimes the schedules aren’t available in enough time for me to know whether or not I have to work. So I have to call one of my coworkers for them to check the schedule at work for me. If I have work hours scheduled during the time I have to be at school, I miss out on school and go to work instead,” she said. “I have to choose this because if I don’t work, I don’t make any money to pay for the things my family needs.” The Chicago Fair Workweek Ordinance would require that workers receive two weeks advance notice of their work schedule, the opportunity to consent or decline to hours being added to their schedule with less than 14 days notice and additional predictability pay added for last minute shifts being removed, among other protections.

Travel ban on 6-majority Muslim countries affects refugees except those who fall under family exception
(Chicago, IL) Refugees from around the world and nationals from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen now face a ban on entrance into the US based on the United States Supreme Court’s recent decision unless they can show some family or other relationship to a person or organization in the US. Many of the world’s most vulnerable refugees have no connections in the U.S., but they look to this country as a safe haven from the harm they have suffered in their countries of origin. The Supreme Court’s ruling puts their lives in jeopardy and denies safety to millions, experts say. “Today the Supreme Court enables the White House’s hateful and discriminatory agenda,” said Lawrence Benito, chief executive officer of Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. “The ruling threatens a core aspect of our national identity and seeks to normalize anti-Muslim discrimination in America. We will not let this happen. We support our Muslim brothers and sisters, and all refugees seeking a new home in the United States. Everyone deserves to live in peace, and our friends and allies will not stand down,” he said.

Act of Congress in 2003. Moy, who also plans to attend the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, this Fall, said the opportunity to attend the museum as an Asian-American gave her a deeper understanding and perspective of her fellow African American peers and their struggles that they have faced. “I remember them saying that no matter what race or who you are, you are always going to get something out of it,” Moy said. “I think I got a lot out of it.” Moy said she liked the way the tour guides presented controversial issues about African Americans during the 1960’s. She stated the tour guides did a really good job of explaining the good and bad events that took place during the 1960’s, adding it gave her a better understanding of the issues Africans Americans faced during the Civil Rights Movement.
She continued to say that the trip also offered a variety of insights into African American history and culture. It’s really vital for people of different ethnic backgrounds to learn more about other cultures because it can help individuals gain a better view of America in general, Moy added. “I think for me as an Asian-American, it broadened so much of my horizon and gave me an understanding of other people’s struggles because our struggles and our differences are what make us unique and even more connected to America,” she said. The National Museum of African American History and Culture has collected more than 36,000 artifacts and nearly 100,000 individuals have become charter members, according to https://nmaahc.si.edu/. CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD VOTES TO ADOPT GOOD FOOD PURCHASING POLICY
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Public School Board votes on July 28, 2017, to adopt the updated CPS Wellness Policy committing the district to the Good Food Purchasing Program. Adoption of the Program in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will deepen and accelerate the District’s commitment to values-based purchasing that contributes to overall health and community wellness in the city and region. “We are excited to see Chicago Public Schools continue to be a leader by using procurement dollars to improve the freshness, quality and nutrition in their meals for students while growing opportunities for local, sustainable and fair producers and processors,” stated Rodger Cooley, Executive Director of the Chicago Food Policy Action Council. An important source of healthy food for children in the city, Chicago Public Schools make their meals free to all students while serving nearly 27 million breakfasts and 43 million lunches per school year and spending close to $80 million on food purchases in 2016 – 2017. The Good Food Purchasing Program provides a metric-based framework and set of tools that guide institutions to direct their buying power toward suppliers that meet benchmarks related to five core values: local economies, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, animal welfare, and nutrition.

VIDEO DEVELOPED BY EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS HELPS THE ELDERLY AND OTHERS AVOID HARMFUL FALLS
WASHINGTON — About a third of people who are 65 years of age and older will be involved in an accidental fall this year that diminishes their quality of life. That number increases the older a person gets. “Falls are complex and happen for a variety of reasons,” said Rebecca Parker, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. “But there are common steps that can
be taken right now to greatly decrease your risk of falling for the first time, including those who have fallen multiple times.” Emergency physicians have created a video designed to give people who have fallen in the past — especially the more vulnerable elderly population — easy steps to avoid future falls. It’s called the “7 Step Fall Challenge.” Emergency physicians are confident that by following these steps, you will greatly decrease your risk of falling, especially repeat falling. LAW & POLITICS
Future child support cases to use widely accepted ‘Income Shares’
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services announced today that the most widely used method nationwide to calculate child support will begin to be applied to new cases in Illinois starting July 1, following a bipartisan law signed by Governor Bruce Rauner last year. Child support orders established before July 1, 2017 will not change. Under the “income shares” model, child support will be calculated primarily by looking at typical costs for families in similar circumstances. The income of both parents will also be factored in. Currently, child support in Illinois is calculated primarily based on the income of the obligor – the parent who owes payments – and the number of children. The income shares model considers the typical costs to raise a child for a family at a similar income level as the parents in a case. If there are two incomes, both are added together to arrive at the amount needed to raise the child. Each parent’s contribution is then calculated by applying the methods laid out by the model. The portion owed by the parent who the child lives with is assumed to be paid because they reside together. Illinois now joins 39 other states and the District of Columbia in adopting the income shares model for calculating child support.
Help Stop the U.S. Senate from Killing Medicare/Medicaid and Canceling Coverage for 22 Million Americans The United States Senate is attempting this week to ramp through passage of an Affordable Health Care Bill aimed at undoing the Obama Care Health protection for millions of Americans. The Senate Bill which held no public hearings, would cut Medicare/Medicaid by making one time (block grant) payments to the state which would reduce available healthcare for millions of Americans and older Americans in particular. We need you and every person you can reach to call the U.S. Capitol Operator at 1 202 2243121, Press one for the U.S. Senate, a voice will ask you for your ZIP Code and then use that to connect you to your U.S. Senator. When that Office answers the phone, be sure to ask for the name of the person to whom your are speaking, identify you City and State and tell them to record you Objection to the Affordable Care Act slated for Senate Debate this week. The Democrats in the U.S. Senate are apposed to the Bill. Stopping the votes in support of this Bill by Senate Republicans will kill President Trumps plans to destroy Obama Care (the existing Affordable Care Act) and save coverage at least for the 22 million Americans who would be cut office, as well as benefits for Older Americans in particular. This is not a race issue, this is a human and American issue with thousands of lives at stake. Make that Call.
Back 2 School Illinois Launches Contest to Surprise Two Chicago Schools with Free Supplies for Every Student This Fall Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low-income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom has announced the launch of this year’s “Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School” contest. Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies. Each and every child at both of the winning schools receives their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year. Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated. Whether you are a parent, community leader, concerned citizen, student or member of a faculty, you can enter the contest on behalf of a school. The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th. During the first week of classes this fall, the student bodies of both winning schools will be surprised by Back 2 School Illinois with the delivery of the free school supplies. While most students strive for success in the classroom, it can sometimes prove difficult when they don’t have the necessary school supplies. With B2SI’s annual contest, underserved Chicago students from the two winning schools are given the tools they need to thrive in the classroom. Providing these kits the first week of school lets the students know that they deserve a good education. Job Hunting? 5 Reasons to Consider Using a Staffing Agency

simplify your job search, these benefits may account for why the staffing and recruitment industry is growing substantially. Here are five reasons to consider working with a staffing agency, from the experts at Randstad US, a human resources consulting firm. • Access to “hidden” jobs. Recruiters are often tasked by companies to hire for positions not advertised publicly. The only way to find them is through a staffing agency. Often, these positions are the most sought after in the marketplace, and in some of the most desirable workplaces. • A huge number of companies rely on them. As the economy embraces an “on-demand” workforce, more employers are turning to staffing firms who use emerging job search technologies alongside their human instincts to deliver the best-fit talent they seek. In fact, more than eight in 10 employers (82 percent)
at least somewhat agree that by 2025, their reliance on staffing/ recruiting partners will increase, according to Randstad’s Workplace 2025 study. • Recruiters can be your career agent. Wading through hundreds of online job boards, company ads and social media sites can be complicated, time-consuming and frustrating. You don’t have to go it alone. A recruiter can help you with your job search, enhance your resume, provide career advice and more. The best recruiters look beyond your resume to understand your career goals, workplace expectations and values to identify the best-fit jobs for you within the digital landscape. • Not just for temps. Many people assume staffing agencies only offer temporary positions. Recruiters are often asked to search for fulltime, permanent and temporary-tohire positions across a wide range of industries. Even those who begin working as a temporary employee
are often hired permanently after proving their value. In fact, the Workplace 2025 study says 56 percent of companies say many of the top talent in their company began as temporary workers. • It’s free. There aren’t many things you can get for free these days, but the many benefits of working with a staffing company are among them. “Be sure to work with a recruiter who is passionate about helping you reach your potential,” says Jim Link, chief human resources officer, Randstad North America. “They should play the role of trusted human partner in today’s technology-driven world to ensure you are recognized as an individual, not just another resume.” Given that more than half of employers (51 percent) named staffing/recruiting firms as their most effective method for finding full-time and contract workers, job seekers should consider taking advantage of this resource to improve their job search chances.

Athleisure Trend Let’s You Look Good in Casual Clothes
(StatePoint) From fitness conscious consumers to busy moms who are always on the go, casual athletic attire is becoming a socially acceptable and on-trend style. In fact, it’s so popular, it carries its own name: “athleisure.” It may sound like a piece of cake to dress in casual and relaxed clothing. However, avoiding a “just rolled out of bed look” is not so simple. If you find that comfy yoga pants or joggers are increasingly becoming a staple in your wardrobe, consider these tips to ensure you always look put together when sporting them. • The right shoe goes a long way: Forgo the traditional or “core” running shoe for this look. Such brands as Adidas, Converse, Nike and Vans have introduced updates to their classic offerings. While still inspired by an athletic lifestyle, variations in color, height, patterns and textures accommodate the growing trend for casual wear. In addition to looking good, they are breathable and functional -- just in case you wanted to sneak in a light workout during the day! For example, the popular Adidas Baseline still comes in a classic white. However, this year they introduced a version in peach, a fun and new spring color. • Get the family involved: Did you grow up loving your Chuck Taylors? The good news is that new athleisure wear is available as a full family offering, so that infants, tweens and teens can also enjoy comfortable, yet stylish, shoes. In response to this trend, family-friendly retailer Rack Room Shoes recently introduced The Athletic Shop, a shop-within-a-shop concept that highlights nationally recognized name brand products for those with an active lifestyle. “As we see the athleisure trend continue to grow, we’re continually adding new introductions from athletic brands for the entire family,” says Adam McDermott, senior project manager of The Athletic Shop, Rack Room Shoes. • Polish off the look: Consider taking some extra time to do hair and makeup on the day you select a casual outfit from your closet. Or try pairing joggers and athleisure footwear with a nice handbag, statement scarf or leather jacket. This will help put the look together nicely. With all this in mind, the experts at Rack Room Shoes are focusing on comfortable, functional and stylish athleisure-inspired footwear. More information is available at rackroomshoes.com. To look your best when dressing casually, be sure to craft your outfits with care.
The athleisure trend is growing with designers continuously adding new introductions for members of the entire family.
Be Fashionable and Fit (StatePoint) Staying active doesn’t just keep a waistline in check, it benefits every part of the body, including the brain. Now is the time to renew your commitment to staying fit. Here are some top tips to get moving more. • Rethink Your Commute. Leave the car keys at home and lace up your sneakers instead. Commuting to work by bike is a great way to bookend the work day with some aerobic activity. • Take a Walk. Even the most adventurous weekend warriors are sometimes required to sit or stand in place for long stretches in the workplace. If your job keeps you sedentary, break up the day with a brisk walk outdoors during lunch. Throughout the day, stretch your legs with a loop around your work station. It sounds counter-intuitive, but a short break spent being physically active can help boost your overall productivity. • Get Out of Town. Skip the gym and plan a day or weekend trip dedicated to physical fitness. Whether it’s hiking a nearby trail, kayaking a local river, or doing yoga in the park, there’s nothing like getting your exercise fix in nature. • Gear up. New tech gear is helping support people’s efforts to get outdoors and stay fit, so consider gearing up before your next adventure. For example, Casio’s PRO TREK WSD-F20 Smart Outdoor Watch is water-resistant and equipped with GPS capabilities and a full-color map display. Users can download maps in advance to continue getting navigation guidance even when they are offline or out of range. Vital information, such as travel speed, elapsed time and distance, is close at hand without checking your smartphone -- making it a good choice for cyclists. Other tools include a compass, altimeter and barometer. • Try Something New. Change up your fitness routine from time to time to avoid hitting a plateau. This will keep things mentally interesting so you don’t lose interest in exercise. What’s more, a new class or activity may “surprise” your body by working different muscles in a new way. With a few simple strategies and the right tools, incorporating fitness into your life can be fun and easy.
(Family Features) As the weather gets warmer, mosquitoes can prevent homeowners from reaping the benefits of living life outside. According to a Harris Poll conducted on behalf of TruGreen, 85 percent of Americans say that mosquitoes limit their family’s outdoor activities during the months they’re most active. The same survey also found that nearly two-thirds of Americans are concerned about protecting themselves and their family from Zika or other mosquito-borne illnesses. A majority of respondents reported using bug spray on themselves and their family members to combat mosquitoes outdoors at home. Although it’s the leading preventative measure, still only half say it is most effective at preventing mosquitoes from biting. Depending on where you live, the mosquito biting season lasts 5-7 months. If spray isn’t adequate to combat the mosquitoes at your home, it may be necessary to take additional measures. These tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the pest control experts at TruGreen can help combat mosquitoes outside of the home: Remove standing water. Mosquitoes generally lay eggs near water, so once a week take time to dump anything that
may hold water in the yard. This includes buckets, kiddie pools and birdbaths. Don’t overlook items like toys, planters and flowerpot saucers. For containers intended to hold water, like cisterns or rain barrels, regularly check that the lid is secure so mosquitoes can’t gain access. A finely woven mesh is a good alternative if there is no lid. If you can’t cover the container and won’t be drinking from it, use a larvicide to treat the water. Be wary of unexpected reservoirs. Natural features such as shrubbery and tree stumps can also collect water, and they may be more difficult to remedy. Keep dense shrubs thinned and pruned. Increasing the air flow can make these areas less attractive. If removing a tree stump is impractical, a professional can guide you in proper treatment. Apply a broad-application pest eliminator. Use an outdoor insect spray or professional service to kill mosquitoes in areas where they rest all over the yard. A professionally applied treatment such as TruGreen Mosquito Defense targets pests where they live, and the company’s professionally trained specialists use an innovative mosquito control formula to treat all areas of the yard where mosquitoes hide, including trees, shrubs, mulched areas and all types of ground cover.

Don’t Let Your Wireless Bill Ruin Your Big Trip (StatePoint) Travel can be rife with inconvenience, from delayed flights to lost luggage and more. And the high cost of staying connected via mobile devices is an additional headache for a growing number of travelers, especially those with international adventures ahead. This summer travel season, T-Mobile and research firm GfK released a new study that shows Americans’ reliance on their smartphones, and how potentially pricey travel could be for those who don’t understand the costs of international roaming. The study found that 69 percent of Americans take their smartphone when they leave the country and travelers are willing to make extreme tradeoffs for connectivity and the ability to maintain contact with friends and family. Indeed, more than half (55 percent) of Americans would rather lose their luggage than their smartphone, and two thirds (66 percent) of Americans would trade their preferred seat on a plane to ensure they have their cell phone when traveling abroad. While people plan for the cost of hotels, airfare and other travel expenses, they can sometimes underestimate the cost of connectivity while traveling if they are not careful. To help you prepare for the busy travel season ahead, T-Mobile is offering tips to make sure you and your family can stay connected without coming home to an outrageous wireless bill. • Know your plan. Shockingly, six in 10 survey respondents (59 percent) confessed to not knowing what their international plan rates were. Considering that the average week abroad for a family of four can be more than $7,000 if you don’t plan ahead, this could be a major setback when you return from that fun vacation! In order to avoid bill shock, seek out a plan that helps eliminate unexpected expenses. For example, T-Mobile ONE is designed with passport-holders in mind, and automatically includes texting and data at no additional cost in more than 140 countries and destinations. And if you travel to Mexico and Canada a lot, you’ll be happy to know that high-speed data in those countries is included. To learn more about the plan offerings, visit t-mobile.com. • Use data to your advantage. Fifty eight percent of survey respondents reported being worried about not knowing the language in a foreign country and 66 percent are worried about getting lost. With the right carrier, and access to unlimited data, your phone can break down these barriers for you! Make sure you have the apps you need and a plan that lets you utilize those apps for everything from maps and navigation to translation technology. • Use Wi-Fi when you can. If you don’t have a data friendly travel plan, put your phone in airplane mode and only use Wi-Fi when it’s available. You won’t be alone. Staying connected is such a concern that one in five (21 percent) smartphone users reported going to extreme measures, like eating at a restaurant they didn’t like, just to use the Wi-Fi, or even illegally pirating strangers’ Wi-Fi connections! So, take your family somewhere exciting this travel season and don’t forget your smartphones! You’ll be glad you have them while traveling, particularly if you take steps to keep your bill in-check.

Keep Your Cool This Summer with These
(StatePoint) Summer is often associated with lazy days spent picnicking and swimming, but most of us know that these months are often the most action-packed, making organization as important as ever. To keep it all together this summer, consider the following tips and tricks.
Mix it Up Spend less time in the trenches of your closet and dresser drawers. Take an hour to move all your favorite summer clothing and accessories to the most accessible places in your closet, so getting dressed is simple all season long. Move items to the back that you won’t need or want to see for a while, so they don’t get in your way. Bye-bye heavy wool sweaters, hello short sleeve buttonups and sundresses! You are likely invited to many social gatherings this summer. Whether it’s a garden party celebrating a marriage or a luau celebrating a birthday, take this opportunity to crosscheck your calendar with your closet, doing a quick inventory to ensure you have the items you need for all the festivities of summer. Write it Down
Don’t commit important dates to memory. Commit them to paper. You may already have a wall or desk planner, but you are on the -go a lot, so keep a planner with you at all times to track appointments, flight times, gift registries and other critical information. Writing things down is not only useful, it gives you a way of looking back and remembering all the summer fun you had long after the season has ended. To get this habit to work for you, choose a planner that matches your needs and suits your style. For example, the floral planners from AT-A-GLANCE are evocative of summer, and are not only functional, but make a nice accessory. They come in sizes ranging from pocket to extra-large, and are offered in various formats, including daily, weekly and monthly.
Rev Your Engine Hitting the road this summer? Whether you are traveling near or far, you’ll want to make sure your car is as ready as you are. If you aren’t comfortable performing the inspection yourself, take it into the shop. They will ensure you have proper air pressure in your tires and enough windshield wiper fluid, coolant,
brake fluid and oil, among other tests and measures. You can prep your car, too, for summer fun and adventure. Toss a blanket in the trunk for the season in case of spontaneous picnicking. Pack games, books and other distractions, and a cooler full of snacks
EDUCATION Tips to Avoid “Summer Brain Drain” (StatePoint) It’s only natural that kids get excited for summer vacation. However, parents may be concerned about “summer brain drain,” which occurs when students lose the knowl edge they gained during the school year. Unfortunately, many children show learning losses when they return to school in the fall, and these summer setbacks are cumulative, resulting in increas ing levels of learning loss over time, according to RAND research. “Parents can keep minds sharp by creating fun summer learning opportu nities at home,” says Dr. Clement Chau, director of learning for VTech and LeapFrog, home to a number of educational learning products. To help families avoid summer set backs, Chau is offering the following ideas and tips. * Visit a library. Many libraries offer summer reading challenges which can prove to be great motivation to crack open a book. Enlist the expertise of librarians to help children find titles they’ll enjoy, and use the “fivefinger” test to be sure your child has books at the proper reading level: read one page of a book; if there are more than five unknown words, have your child choose another book. * Learn about a new topic. Has your child been collecting rocks when play
ing outdoors? Does he or she like to point out different shapes of clouds in the sky? Encourage children to research and learn more about the subjects that fascinate them. If they are passionate about a topic, they’ll be more likely to seek out more informa tion. * Set aside required reading time. On average, children who read more than 20 minutes a day scored above the 90th percentile on standardized reading tests, and reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing, according to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report. Make reading a daily habit in your home. *Look for teachable moments. Going to a baseball game? Show your child how to calculate a batting aver age or a pitcher’s ERA. Making din ner? Let your child measure the ingre
and water for longer car trips. It can be easy to let adventure stand in the way of organization. But nothing ruins summer fun quite as quickly as forgetting where you want to be. Keep your home, your car and yourself organized all summer long.
dients. Clipping coupons? Show your child how much money will be saved in your gro cery budget. Going on a road trip? Look up some fun facts about the differ ent states you’ll see on license plates. *Read together. Forty eight percent of children ages six to eight report that they want adults to read aloud to them, even though they are able to read on their own, according to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report. Use this time with your child to discuss the topics in the book and ask ques tions that help build criti cal thinking skills. Try such prompts as: Tell me about your favorite charac ter. What was your favorite part of the book and why? Would you recommend this book to a friend? * With a fun focus on learning, you can help children stay academically active all summer, which will help ease the transition back to the classroom in fall,” says Chau.
