University of North Carolina Center for Health Innovation and AARP Collaborate on Digital Health Solutions for the 50+ Population CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina (UNC) Center for Health Innovation and AARP are collaborating to launch a second Digital Health Innovation SprintTM in the Triangle, NC to develop digital solutions to the problem of medication adherence in patients age 50 and over. The “Sprint” is a novel experience-based series of high-energy events designed to guide entrepreneurial-focused teams quickly through the process of maturing an idea and creating a prototype. Leveraging design thinking methodologies, the Sprint provides structure and support for teams to better define a healthcare problem and generate, develop and refine digital solutions over a two-month period. The UNC AARP Digital Health Innovation Sprint launched on March 2, 2017 with Discovery Day and concludes May 11, 2017 with Demo Day, when teams pitch their ideas and prototypes for a chance to win prize money as well as direct access to incubator programs and other resources designed to support early start-ups. The UNC AARP Sprint aims to find digital health solutions to the challenge of: How can wearables be used

“Significant value can be created with patientcentered solutions designed to improve medication adherence and patients’ health.” to seamlessly galvanize the 50+ population to take the right medications as prescribed? “We know that half of patients do not take their medications as prescribed by their physician and that poor medication adherence costs the US at least $100 billion per year,” says Carol Lewis, Associate Director of the UNC Center for Health Innovation. “Significant value can be created with patient-centered solutions designed to improve medication adherence and patients’ health.” The UNC Center for Health Innovation developed and hosted the inaugural Digital Health Innovation Sprint last year, attracting over 85 participants including local entrepreneurs,

software developers and engineers, clinicians, and business leaders. The three winning teams from that Sprint took home cash prizes and are now further developing their prototypes and business plans to prepare for a potential evaluation pilot at UNC Health Care. Joseph Dobgima Njinimbam, team lead for Asthma One, said after winning first place, “Thank you all very much for this opportunity. We were left not only elated, but more passionate to make a strong mark in health care. We are eager, driven, and motivated to work with you all to improve the lives of asthma patients, one app at a time.” Focused on empowering people to choose how they live as they age, AARP has a strong history of leading innovation for people age 50 and over. AARP develops programs that spark innovation and entrepreneurial activity across public and private sectors including the AARP Innovation Fund, Hatchery@AARP, and the AARP Tech Nest. Caregiving also is a priority for AARP due to the significant impact it has on those 50-plus and their families. A recent AARP study found that by 2020 there will be a substantial shortage in the number of caregivers needed.

Al Sharpton met with Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, along with other leading civil rights group principals. In the meeting, Rev. Sharpton and Attorney General Sessions discussed objections to the current travel ban, the weakening of voting rights and the TX Voter ID case, the Walter Scott and Eric Garner cases, and the Civil Rights Division not interfering with the use of consent decrees. In addition, Rev. Sharpton and Attorney General Sessions spoke about the lack of outrage from the Attorney General’s office around the current hate crimes against various citizens. According to Rev. Sharpton: “We were not hostile, but we showed holy indignation.” Attending the meeting along with Rev. Al Sharpton were Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League, Wade Henderson, President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Melanie L. Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable Public Policy Network, Sherilynn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Kristen Clarke, President of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues Announces Annual Honorees, Presents Lifetime Contribution Award To mark Women’s History Month, the Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues recently honored 18 women for their contributions in making their communities better places to live. The Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award, renamed in 2010 in Montes’ honor as a way to recognize her work on behalf of the women and girls of Cook County, is presented to one woman from each of the County’s 17 legislative districts and one from the County at-large. The Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues receives input from the individual districts to identify exceptional nominees whose work is seldom recognized. “We are pleased to recognize and acknowledge this year’s Cook County’s Unsung Heroines -- 18 women whose strength, resilience and sacrifice to better their communities inspire us all,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who helped present the awards. During the ceremony, Merri Dee, longtime Chicago media personality who has traditionally emceed the event, was presented with a Lifetime Contribution Award for her tireless work on behalf of women and children. IDOL Director presents Governor’s Safety Award at DIOSH Day To promote safety in the workplace, Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) Acting Director Anna Hui joined employers and employees at the 26thAnnual Downstate Illinois Occupational Safety and Health (DIOSH) Day Conference. Illinois OSHA, along with many industry groups, sponsored this event to provide expert occupational safety and health management resources for employers of all sizes and industries. “The health and safety of all workers remains one of our top priorities,” IDOL Acting Director Hui said. “It is great to see so many employees and employers come out to learn more about ensuring workplace health and safety.” The conference offered breakout sessions and networking opportunities with speakers and vendors from industry, higher education and regulatory agencies. It was a venue to learn about best practices and ask questions of peers and compliance agents about how standards are practically applied. Illinois OSHA, a division within IDOL, was available to answer questions and sign up businesses for its On-Site Safety & Health Consultation Program, which offers free, confidential safety assistance to small to medium size employers of 500 or less. For the past six years at DIOSH Day, IDOL has also presented the Governor’s Safety Award to a person who has made significant contributions to safety and health training or research that have had lasting impact for workers. This year’s award recipient is Kevin Gorshe, who is the safety director at CORE Construction Illinois in Morton, IL. The company is known for restoring the Illinois State Capitol, the Illinois State University Science Building, Pere Marquette Historic Hotel renovation in Peoria, and the Freedom’s Path Veterans Housing at Hines VA Hospital. Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently announced new resources designed to support thriving retail corridors across Chicago’s South, Southwest and West Sides. The Retail Thrive Zones initiative will invest an initial $16 million directly into commercial strips in eight neighborhoods, creating jobs and new amenities for neighborhood residents. “Neighborhood businesses are the heart of Chicago’s neighborhoods and economy,” Mayor Emanuel said in a released statement. “This initiative will strengthen the retail corridors that are economic and cultural hubs for our communities, and in the process create new jobs and amenities in neighborhoods that need more private investment,” he said. The initiative will support community entrepreneurs and small business owners by addressing common hurdles faced by neighborhood businesses, which were identified in partnership with local community organizations. These challenges will be addressed through greater access to capital, support services for entrepreneurs and business owners, and infrastructure improvements to encourage visitors. New and existing retail businesses in the designated corridors can now apply for approximately $9 million in grants. The City will also be investing $7 million into the designated corridors for additional support services. Applications and more information can be found at www.ThriveZones.com. Grants are available up to $250,000 per business, to cover up to 75 percent of eligible costs. Funds may be used to reimburse the costs of rehabbing commercial buildings, including structural repairs and improvements to roofs, facades, and plumbing, electrical or HVAC systems. These investments in neighborhood commercial corridors are expected to create new local amenities and more than 650 new jobs, plus nearly 2,000 construction jobs. As part of the Retail Thrive Zone program, partnering lenders are offering matching loan products to help front-fund grant projects and provide short-term operating capital. In addition, the City has launched a web portal that makes applying for County property tax incentives in the Thrive Zones easy. The initiative will also invest $7 million to support vibrant and healthy retail corridors. Investments will include the strategic targeting of distressed buildings and persistent vacancies for investment and activation. Pop-up retail spaces, including “BoomBoxes,” will help entrepreneurs and growing businesses test new concepts without incurring heavy capital costs. Light infrastructure investments are also underway to encourage visitors. Along with each Retail Thrive Zone’s local partner organization, coordinated coaching, mentoring and networking opportunities will also be offered, and future phases will include new support services for businesses in those corridors, such as free design and architectural assistance. The designated retail corridors are found in the following neighborhoods: Austin, Back of Yards, Bronzeville, Chatham, Englewood, South Shore, West Humboldt Park and West Pullman. “Developing the Halsted corridor is a priority for my community, and I’m excited about the new resources the Retail Thrive Zone initiative will leverage for our local businesses,” Ald. Carrie Austin (34th) said. The initiative builds on the recently-launched Neighborhood Opportunity Fund. Applications opened recently for an initial $4 million in grants from the Fund to support commercial development projects on Chicago’s West, South and Southwest Sides. The Neighborhood Opportunity Fund generates resources from private downtown developments to support commercial developments in neighborhoods with the greatest need. Grants up to $250,000 will be issued by the City beginning this spring, and larger grants will be available on a case-by-case basis pending City Council approval. Businesses that apply for Retail Thrive Zone grants will be automatically considered for Neighborhood Opportunity Fund grants where appropriate. More information can be found at www.NeighborhoodOpportunityFund.com.

Retail Thrive Zones and the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund are the latest Emanuel administration initiatives designed to support neighborhood businesses. In 2012, the Mayor’s license reforms reduced the number of businesses license types from 117 to 49, reducing number of licenses businesses needed to obtain – saving both time and money. In recent months the City has identified numerous opportunities to further consolidate or cut outdated licensing regulations, which will eventually reduce the total number of business licenses to 40 – a two-thirds reduction since 2011. The reduction would make the total number of business licenses in Chicago 70 percent fewer than Washington D.C. and 25 percent fewer than New York City. Emanuel released the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund on February 27. Andrea L. Zopp, who is Deputy Mayor and Chief Neighborhood Development Officer said right now, there is about $4 million in the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund that will be used for grants. “But we expect that the fund will continue to grow over time and we hope in about 3-5 years, it will be up to $50 million dollars. So, this is going to be a pool of dollars of capital investment in the south, southwest and west sides of the city,” she said. Local entrepreneurs, when asked, showed support for the initiatives. Dorian Myrickes, co-owner of Vinnie’s Steakhouse, located at 400 E. 47th St., said, he and his partner are looking to expand their young establishment in other parts of Chicago and thinks the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund has come at the right time. “I think it would be great,” Myrickes said. “It would give black people the opportunity to see how businesses are run in our communities and give us an opportunity of being business owners.” Arthur Grant III, business owner of Games Plus Incorporated, which is located in the Chatham area at 8237 South Cottage Grove Avenue, said he also believes that the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund will be good for the black community, but says more money should be invested into the fund. “If I have the opportunity to apply for it, then I think I should benefit from the tax money that I pay,” Grant III said. “I think $16 million dollars is just a minimal amount of money that can support the [black] businesses in this city.” Johnny Stallworth II, son of Johnny Stallworth, the owner of John and Sons General Contractors Inc., located at 7350 S. Halsted St., said the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund will be beneficial to the black community and will help youth gain employment through the black businesses and prevent them from having to purchase supplies and goods outside of their community. “I think it’s a real good thing for the community,” Stallworth said. “I think it will help in several avenues like education, economics and [overall] I think it would be very good for the [youth].” Malcolm Crawford, owner of Sankofa Cultural Arts and Business Center (5820 W. Chicago Ave), and executive director of The Austin African American Business Networking Association, Incorporated (AAABNA) said, he along with Chicago’s Department Planning and Development have worked tirelessly for two years to try and help the black community gain more access to capital. Applications for the grant will be accepted twice a year, which began Feb, 27, 2017 and will end April 21, 2017 and the second application slot will begin Aug. 2, 2017 to Oct. 2, 2017, according to the neighborhood opportunity fund page. Entrepreneurs can apply for the money to purchase space, renovate space, buy equipment, pay for architectural cost to help them expand and grow their businesses, Zopp said.

hen taking up the critical work involved in modifying the direction in which our lives may be going, one of the most fundamental things we can do is change the way we think about ourselves. Unfortunately, we sometimes overlook this simple, if not so easy step. Whether we realize it or not, the way we think becomes the basis upon and from which we speak and act. Rare is the occasion when we outperform the things we declare about ourselves. In order to speak life, we must think life. When we change the way we think, we immediately empower ourselves to change the way we speak. Being responsible for the way we think, speak, and believe gives us the immediate ability to respond when life seems out-of-whack. There are more than enough challenges in the world already and sometimes life can be really difficult. Why add to the difficulties by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk? As it has been said, “Don’t fill your boat with water. The storm will do that all on its own.” Each of us needs a champion, a coach, and a cheerleader. Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, don’t just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, don’t tell yourself that you should have anyway; recognize how much you are helping yourself. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve, but don’t beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. Be patient with yourself. You may not be a finished work just yet. Every constructive thing you can say to yourself will help. Speak life!
