CHANCE THE RAPPER ANNOUNCES

WINNERS OF BUD BILLIKEN ROYAL COURT IN CHATHAM By Christopher Shuttlesworth

Residents of the Chatham community gathered at Studio Movie Grill (“SMG”), located on 210 W. 87th St. as they continued to celebrate the completion of its nearly $3 million recent remodeling project with a six-week lineup of special screenings and events. One of the theater’s special guests included three-time Grammy Winner Chance the Rapper, as he announced the winners of the 2017 Bud Billiken Royal Court after a private movie screening at the theatre on Mar. 25, 2017. “I want to congratulate everyone who was apart of the contest for your hard work and dedication in school and writing,”

Chance the Rapper said. “At the end of the day, we are all winners because we got to see Power Rangers.” The 2017 Bud Billiken Royal Court will consist of a king, queen, prince, princess, lord and a lady. But due to so many gifted and talented students, two more positions, which were a duke and a duchess, were added to the Royal Court for a total of eight winners, explained Chance the Rapper. The Royal Court will participate in the 88th Bud Billiken Parade where Chance the Rapper will serve as Grand Marshal. The parade will provide disadvantaged youth of Chicago the opportunity to shine bright

and highlight positivity within their local communities on Aug. 12, 2017, according to budbillikenparade.org. “The Bud Billiken Parade, which is the second largest parade in the United States, has grown into an institution with participation from across generations. The parade will be broadcasts live by ABC7 Chicago at 10 a.m., and will begin south on King Dr. from Oakwood Blvd. to 51st., and will continue on Ellsworth Dr. through Washington Park to 55th St.,” according to budbillikenparade.org. Chance the Rapper encouraged everyone to come out to support the children at the 2017 Bud Billiken Parade.

The Cook County Board recently approved a new Tax Incentive Ordinance that will work in tandem with the recently passed Workforce Ordinance for any tax incentives processed by the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development (BED). “This ordinance is a result of a major effort by municipalities, businesses and property owners throughout the County to reactivate vacant property,” said Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle. “It is designed to improve the business climate, stimulate job growth in Cook County and ensure that those who receive the incentives comply with their commitments.” Moving forward, tax incentive recipients processed through the County’s BED must enter into an agreement with the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership for the term of the tax incentive. Recipients will work directly with the Partnership to fill job openings and vacancies for a period of at least seven business days from the date job vacancies are opened. Working together, the newly amended Tax Incentive Ordinance and Workforce Ordinance will: Facilitate faster processing of incentive applications in Industrial Growth Zones and designated retail corridors. Make tax incentive recipients more accountable for upholding their end of the agreement with the County. Increase transparency by requiring tax incentive applicants to submit an Economic Disclosure Statement to their municipality. Create avenues for revoking tax incentives for businesses that do not comply with their development agreements. Clarify and expand the scope of the County’s Living Wage requirement to ensure that employees who work at properties that receive a tax incentive are paid a living wage regardless of ownership. These new standards primarily apply to tax incentives reviewed by the BED and sent through to the Assessor for approval, and will promote overall accountability for the tax incentive and job creation process in Cook County, Preckwinkle said.

Legendary Journalist

Claude Lewis Dies at Age 82 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) mourns the passing of NABJ Founder Claude Lewis, also a founder of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ). Lewis died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Virtua Voorhees Hospital in Voorhees, N.J. He was 82. Lewis was a highly respected journalist and mentor to many journalists. Born and raised in New York City, he attended public schools and graduated from City College with a degree in English. Lewis worked as an editor and reporter for newspapers and magazines, such as Newsweek, New York Herald Tribune, and The Philadelphia Bulletin. He taught at Villanova University and also wrote a column for The Bulletin until it folded in 1982. Later, Lewis wrote a syndicated column for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Claude Lewis “This is a very sad day. Claude was a great mentor for me at The “Claude lives on in all of us. I thank Bulletin. In 1982, he founded journalists Chuck Stone and Acel Moore the first national African-American laid the groundwork for and later founded the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ) in 1973. Lewis and many of PABJ’s early members contributed to the formation of NABJ in 1975 in Washington, D.C. “Founder Claude Lewis was a gentle giant and kind soul whose passion for equality and equal opportunity can be seen in his columns and life’s work. He had a personal impact on the trajectory of many NABJ members, myself included, showing us all the way,” said NABJ President Sarah Glover.

newspaper, The National Leader. NABJ Founder Joe Davidson worked with Lewis at The National Leader and first met him when both worked at The Philadelphia Bulletin. “Claude was an important force in journalism in the 1970s. He meant a lot to me personally and to a lot of black journalists professionally,“ Davidson said. “He lured me away from The Inquirer to work as managing editor at The Leader. It was an opportunity to serve the black community with highquality journalism. I was really proud of the work we did together on that newspaper,” Davidson added. Lewis covered the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, meeting and interviewing such icons as Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1968, Lewis left a meeting in Philadelphia to join the King family in Memphis immediately after receiving the news that King was shot. “Claude was a journalist miles ahead of his time, and he achieved recognition long before many recognized him,” said NABJ Founder Paul Brock. Former NABJ President Vanessa Williams, a national reporter with the Washington Post, remembers Lewis fondly. “I remember Claude as a friendly and encouraging colleague when we worked together at the Philadelphia Inquirer. His door was always open and he didn’t hesitate to share his contacts, expertise, and advice to young journalists. He and Acel were like these twin towers of black journalism excellence in Philly. We should honor them by continuing their tradition of being fierce advocates for the truth, especially in this current political climate,” Williams said. NABJ extends its sincerest condolences to Founder Lewis’s family and the countless friends within the journalism community who he leaves behind. Lewis is survived by his wife Beverly, four children, five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Trotter: Antiquated, unfair bond process hurts the poor To end a system that punishes the poor, State Senator Donne Trotter is sponsoring a proposal that eliminates the state’s antiquated monetary bond process. The legislation is Senate Bill 552 which is in the Senate Criminal Law committee. “Rather than providing all persons arrested an equitable opportunity to leave custody, it is only afforded to those who can pay the bond,” said Trotter, D-Chicago “This antiquated bond process only increases the likelihood of low income people being arrested for petty crimes and enduring harsher conditions than people from affluent backgrounds who commit the same crime. These trends of partiality toward people with wealth are prevalent in the justice system.” Illinois Department of Insurance Places Public Service Insurance Company into Rehabilitation An Agreed Order of Rehabilitation has been entered against Public Service Insurance Company (“Public Service”) and its parent corporation Public Service Mutual Holding Company by the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois (“Supervising Court”). Jennifer Hammer, Director of Insurance of the State of Illinois, has been affirmed as the statutory rehabilitator (“Rehabilitator”) for the companies. As of December 31, 2016 Public Service had a statutory surplus of $28,264,847 as it relates to policyholders. The Order of Rehabilitation provides that coverage under policies in force will remain in place through the expiration of their terms, and authorizes the Rehabilitator to continue to pay claims by or against the Public Service policyholders as well as assumed reinsurance claims in the ordinary course of business as they come due. In accordance with Illinois law, the Rehabilitator is preparing a plan of rehabilitation for the companies that will be presented to the Supervising Court for public hearing and approval. Public Service is an Illinois domestic stock property & casualty insurance company located in New York City, New York. Public Service was previously organized as a mutual insurance company that, upon its conversion to a stock company, became a subsidiary of Public Service Mutual Holding Company. CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY’S DIGITAL SKILLS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM HELPED AT LEAST 1,000 CHICAGOANS SECURE JOBS IN 2016 Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently joined Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon to announce that in 2016 at least 1,000 patrons secured jobs with assistance from the CPL’s CyberNavigators. The CyberNavigator (CN) program, available citywide at CPL locations, offers patrons one-on-one computer help from a CyberNavigator, including job support and online application services. In April of last year, Mayor Emanuel announced an expansion of digital skills access and training resources across the city, including an expansion of the CyberNavigator program at CPL. The expansion increased CNs from 48 public library branches to every neighborhood in the city, creating an additional 350-400 new training hours per week across Chicago. The library locations with the highest number of self-reported jobs secured are Kelly in Englewood, Douglass Branch in North Lawndale and Whitney M. Young Jr. in Chatham. The actual numbers of jobs secured may be higher, in these communities and citywide, as numbers were only self-reported by returning library patrons. “We see Chicago Public Library as a resource for Chicagoans to strengthen their ability to develop digital skills, be successful in today’s labor market, and help support Chicago’s economic development,” said Commissioner Bannon. “We are so proud to be having an impact on the patrons we serve by guiding them to successful job resources.” CyberNavigators provide patrons the opportunity to work oneon-one with a digital tutor who helps navigate their questions on computer basics, email and Internet basics, online job searching and resume writing, CPL website and online resources, and eBooks and other digital content. The CyberNavigator program is privately funded by the Chicago Public Library Foundation. Hours for CyberNavigators vary by location and more information can be found at chipublib.org/ computer-help-cybernavigator.

Report shows Black Millennials are the most optimistic DALLAS -- PRNewswire/ -- In a unique collaboration within the advertising industry, Richards/ Lerma joined forces with The University of Texas at Austin, Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public Relations to decode “Millennials,” the generation set to define the future of our nation. The “Millennials Deconstructed” initiative was supported by a nationally representative online research study conducted among 1,000 Millennials aged 18 to 34, with representation across White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian ethnicities. The quantitative findings were enhanced with qualitative ethnographic interviews, a comprehensive social media listening effort, and academic desk research to provide an in-depth look into the subtle differences among today’s highly diverse multicultural Millennial groups. Richards/Lerma and The University of Texas at Austin, Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public

Relations will provide free access to all findings through the release of a series of research reports. The first report, “New Political Beat” on Millennial political beliefs was released last October, and the unrestricted release of the second report, “American Dreams,” released recently centered on Millennials’ varied aspirations and attitudes toward the American Dream. Findings are eye-opening and often counterintuitive to what is portrayed in mainstream media: Expecting to uncover at least hints of despair, apathy, and hopelessness in Black Millennials, we found the opposite. They are the most optimistic segment. With a heightened sense of control over their future, they have the most faith that their hard work will pay off. Many Hispanics feel misrepresented as cultural intruders, blamed at least in part for what some see as a deteriorating American society and culture. But the data suggests that there’s been a misdiagnosis.

NOW-SUN, APR. 2

Hispanic Millennials are the most traditional keepers and seekers of the American Dream. The minority Millennial segments will contribute the most energy toward pursuing and keeping alive the American Dream. Their racial setbacks fuel their motivation and oddly their optimism and traditional values as well. With more achievement in their family history, White Millennials are less energetic about the American Dream and future aspirations than the other three ethnic segments. In the coming months, the third and final report will be released by Richards/ Lerma and The University of Texas at Austin featuring findings about Millennial media behavior broken out by various ethnic segments. To learn more about the “Millennials Deconstructed” research project and download the comprehensive second report, “American Dreams,” visit www. millennialsdeconstructed. com

U.S. Army Partners with National Society of Black Engineers for 43rd Annual Convention – “Engineering Your Foundation” ARLINGTON, VA--Recognizing the vital importance of developing our nation’s next generation of engineers, scientists and technical professionals, the U.S. Army continues its partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) for the sixth year. The partnership includes the Army’s participation at the NSBE Annual Convention March 29 – April 2 in Kansas City, Mo. as a member of the organization’s Board of Corporate Affiliates (BCA). At the convention, the Army will provide students with information about educational resources and career opportunities available in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This effort to better support tomorrow’s brilliant leaders in STEM helps the Army to lay a stronger foundation

for success for young African-American professionals. The five-day conference kicks off on Wednesday, March 29 at the Kansas City Convention Center. Through its participation in meetings such as the Senior Executive Leadership Forum, the Army will work with NSBE and fellow Board of Corporate Affiliate members to support ongoing initiatives impacting African-American youth, including NSBE’s 2025 campaign, “Be One of 10,000,” which aims to increase the annual number of African-Americans earning bachelor’s degrees in engineering to 10,000 by 2025. In addition, the Army will host an interactive exhibit to allow participants to experience Army technology, including robotics and a Tube Ultra display.

THE COST OF A VOTE made and to push forward in our effort to build a more perfect union. For Annie Harper and for every American denied a vote in our democratic process, I will be speaking out! Rep. Terri A. Sewell (D-Ala.) is serving her fourth term representing Alabama’s 7th District.

By Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-Ala.)

ifty-one years ago, on March 24, 1966, the United States Supreme Court struck down the last poll taxes in this country. It was a victory for the American people and for the case’s lead plaintiff, Annie A. Harper, an elderly African-American woman who could not afford to pay Virginia’s poll tax to cast her ballot. That spring, it looked like the United States was on its way towards a democracy where all voting-age Americans would have access to the polls. The Supreme Court’s 1966 decision to strike down the Virginia poll tax knocked down one of the last pillars of the Jim Crow era. And just the year before, in August of 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act (VRA), our nation’s most powerful tool for protecting the vote. Now, in 2017, more than fifty years later, the same racial and economic discrimination continues to haunt our elections. Old battles have become new again. As minority voters and low-income Americans face new barriers to participating in our democracy, the anniversary of Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections is less of a celebration and more of a reminder that our fight for voting rights is far from over. Since the Supreme Court gutted the VRA in its 2013 Shelby v. Holder decision, states across the country have enacted a new set of discriminatory voting restrictions: voter ID laws. After decades of progress, it is open season for erecting new barriers to voting. Voter protections in states with a history of discrimination have been erased, and as states implement voter ID laws limiting access to the polls, the impact of these policy changes is eerily

Rep. Sewell is the lead sponsor of the Voting Rights Advancement Act, a bill that restores and advances the Voting Rights Act of 1965. She sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Ways and Means Committee.

familiar. When Annie Harper brought her case to the Supreme Court in 1966, her lawsuit asked the Court to rule on a $1.50 poll tax charged by the Virginia Board of Elections. For a lowincome senior like Harper living on a fixed income, that fee was out of reach. The price of today’s barriers to voting is just as debilitating and restricting as Annie Harper’s poll tax. Consider the cost of today’s voter ID laws. In my home state of Alabama, some rural voters have to drive over an hour to acquire a stateissued photo ID, which can often mean taking time off of work. There are also rural voters who don’t have birth certificates or the verifying documents necessary for getting proper identification, and those documents cost money to acquire. For many voters, the hidden costs of obtaining a voter ID create modern barriers to voting. No democracy should ask voters to make these sacrifices in order to be heard. The impact is to deprive certain Americans, often voters from minority communities and disabled voters, of a voice in our democracy. The strength of our democracy lies in the ability of all its citizens to vote. If one person’s vote is denied, it goes to the very integrity of our democracy. In addition to fostering a more responsive, more diverse democracy, the

right to vote and engage in our elections is a right that runs to the core of who we are as a country. It is a right embedded in our Constitution. For me, the right to vote is a fundamental principle of our democracy, and one we have a sacred obligation to protect. That’s why I was outraged when the Trump Administration announced recently that it would drop its support for a challenge to discriminatory voter ID laws in Texas. For six years, the federal government stood side by side with plaintiffs against Texas’ voter ID law because it targets African-American and Latino voters. Federal courts have consistently ruled that the law is unconstitutional and petitioned Texas to fix it, a decision which the Justice Department’s new position now puts in jeopardy. For those of us watching the attack on voting rights unfold, we have a responsibility to speak up and speak out. We stand on the shoulders of giants in the voting rights movement and we will never be able to repay the debt we owe to those individuals. However, we must each do our own work in protecting the precious gains those individuals fought, bled, and died for. The price of freedom is not free, and every generation must do its part to protect the gains

eadership is an important quality and we need good leadership like never before. As both good and bad examples of leadership seem to popup all around us, many leadership experts will tell you, it is difficult to move a family, community, city, or country above the level of its leader. I particularly enjoy reading about the leadership challenges and opportunities faced by many of the transformational leaders found in scripture. Now, just as then, transformational leadership remains a valuable commodity. Whether you’re leading department, division, company, family or just yourself, when it comes down to people deciding whether you are worth following, remember that people first listen to the words you say, then they watch the things you do. People want to make sure that the talk of the leader matches the walk of the leader. Accordingly, leaders are largely considered credible only after their words and deeds match. Before you can lead others, you must first be willing to lead yourself well. When leaders practice what they preach, people are more willing to trust and trust is one of those invaluable qualities that give leaders the ability to move. Transformational leaders understand how to use their influence to share their vision and improve their environment. One of the responsibilities of transformational leaders then is to develop the trust that leads to the ability to see into the distant future with clarity and vision. Transformational leaders develop this essential ability and eventually master the skills necessary to envision a preferred future and lead into an enlarged territory. Leadership and vision go hand-in-hand. When we have leadership without vision, we get lost without a place to go. When we have vision without leadership, we get people excited about some place we cannot take them. Leading well leads to being better. CHRISTIAN APPAREL COMPANY DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY Ramseur, NC -- As an apparel company, Christian Strong™ is doing things differently by offering ways to give back to their local communities while also serving a mission to offer highquality and inspirational Christian clothing to all Christians. Offering a wide range of apparel for men, women and kids, Christian Strong™ makes Christian T Shirts and a host of other fashion apparel that inspire Christians to talk about their faith and share Christianity in everyday life. After Christian Strong™ started, they were already selling Breast Cancer Awareness apparel and then came up with a line called Pray for a Cure™, that helps spread awareness and supports women’s fight against breast cancer with fashion. Christian Strong™ donates proceeds to Randolph Hospital Mammography Fund which offers free mammogram screenings for uninsured and struggling women in Randolph County, North Carolina. Since its establishment, the fund has provided over 2,400 mammograms.

Another innovative addition to what Christian Strong is doing for Churches across the country is offering custom Christian apparel for church events, youth groups, church retreats and other events at prices that are well below the leading online provider for custom t-shirts. “Our goal is to make it easy for churches to represent themselves in tasteful ways that clearly emphasize their church’s identity and their members. Offering this service at a 33% lower cost allows low-funded churches to more easily afford promotional campaigns and church involvement with their own designs,” according to Scott Gartner the President and CEO of the company. As the company’s success grows, they are able to offer more products and brand awareness too. The website now includes Christian Baby™, a new brand of Christian Strong that is offering Christian baby onesies at affordable prices for all Christian families. Rather than offering generic baby onesies, devoted Christian parents now have a Christian-based faith company where they can buy baby clothes.

Pfizer and the National Newspaper Publishers Association Collaborate to Raise Awareness of Sickle Cell Disease and Need for Improved Patient Care NEW YORK--(Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade association of more than 200 African-American–owned community newspapers from around the United States, are collaborating to raise awareness of sickle cell disease, a lifelong and debilitating genetic disorder that affects red blood cells. People with rare diseases, like sickle cell disease, have unique and complex challenges. The first initiative under the collaboration will be a national poll, conducted in partnership with Howard University’s Interdisciplinary Research Team in Washington, DC. The goal is to assess the awareness of sickle cell disease, the challenges of living with the disease, and the importance of clinical trial participation in helping researchers succeed in developing potential new treatments. In a review of 174 sickle cell disease trials, difficulty enrolling patients was the stated cause in nearly half of the 30% of the trials that were

terminated early. “This collaboration with Pfizer provides an opportunity for NNPA to inform and educate the readers of our 211-member Black-owned newspapers in more than 70 markets across the country on sickle cell disease, an often misunderstood disease that has a profound impact on the health and well-being of those affected,” said Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., NNPA President. “Together with Pfizer, we look forward to providing sickle cell disease education that can underscore the importance of improving quality of care in the community.” Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, affecting nearly 100,000 Americans. Although it affects many different ethnic groups, the majority of people with sickle cell disease are of African descent. In the United States, sickle cell disease occurs in approximately 1 out of every 365 African-American births. Access to care

and delivery of innovative treatments prove to be among the most significant challenges faced by people living with sickle cell disease in America. “At Pfizer, we are committed to delivering life-changing therapies to people living with rare diseases, like sickle cell disease,” said Kevin Williams, Chief Medical Officer for Pfizer’s Rare Disease unit. “Our commitment also goes beyond clinical research to supporting the rare disease community through innovative collaborations. Working together, we hope to improve awareness and ultimately address the unmet medical needs of sickle cell disease patients.” The poll results and information about sickle cell disease will be shared with the NNPA network and incorporated into educational programs at NNPA events. More information about sickle cell disease can be found at www.pfizer. com/health-and-wellness/health-topics/ sickle-cell-disease. For more information about the NNPA, please visit www.nnpa.

Shopping Local Can Benefit You and Your Community (StatePoint) If you have home improve ment plans this spring, it’s important to con sider where you will be doing your shopping. For many people, the first stores to come to mind are big box retailers because of the widespread assumption that chains can offer better selection and better prices. Keep in mind, though, that when it comes to items needed for your home projects whether it be new flooring, paint or a kitchen renovation more often than not, experts say that your local independent retailer can offer as good or better selection, be compet itive with pricing, and provide a superior cus tomer service experience. What’s more, shopping at local business es can benefit your household and the com munity. At a locally owned store, you will be more likely to find interesting items and prod ucts that set your home apart. And more of your dollars will stay put when you give them to business owners who pay taxes locally, hire locally and may be more inclined to sup port community charities and organizations. You may also find independent retailers that can offer some of the same benefits as a large chain. For example, when small busi ness owners belong to a cooperative, they come together to scale buying power, access goods and services at a lower cost, and cre ate opportunities not available to them as individual businesses. For you, this can mean more and better choices of products and affordability. In the case of Flooring America for exam ple, this means being able to offer a wide selection of products, including hard sur faces like hardwood, laminate and tile, and soft surface flooring, paint, cabinets for kitchen renovations and even closet organi zation solutions. Their retailers can be found in local communities throughout the country, with a varying product selection depending on location. So, if you are looking to make home improvements this spring, check out your local retailers that not only offer great product selection, but also contribute to your commu nity in a positive way.
