CONGRESSMAN DANNY DAVIS INTRODUCES FATHERHOOD LEGISLATION A community meeting was recently held at La Rabida Children’s Hospital located on 6501 S. Promontory Dr. to discuss the reconstruction plans for the 27-hole golf course in Jackson Park. The Chicago Park Golf Alliance said they plan to replace the 27-hole golf course and create a single 18-hole golf course that will cater to the next generation of young golfers. Eugene Taylo has been golfing since 1973. Taylor says he can’t believe that he is still alive to witness the beginning stages of the Obama Presidential Center which is the planned presidential library of Barack Obama. The center will be located in Jackson Park in the same area as the newly renovated golf course. Photo Credit: Christopher Shuttlesworth
THE CHICAGO PARK GOLF ALLIANCE PLANS TO RECONSTRUCT JACKSON PARK GOLF COURSE By Christopher Shuttlesworth The Obama Presidential Center (OPC) is set to be completed in Jackson Park by the year 2021. As part of the new installments, the Chicago Park Golf Alliance plans to reconstruct the 27-hole golf course in Jackson Park and create a single 18-hole golf course that will cater to the next generation of young golfers. Chicago Alderman Leslie Hairston of the 5th Ward along with community leaders and architects, held a community meeting on June 27, 2017 at La Rabida
Children’s Hospital, located on 6501 S. Promontory Dr., to discuss further details of the reconstruction plans for the 27-hole golf course. Gregg Calpino, who is the senior landscape architect at Smith Group JJR, said the updated framework for the single 18-hole golf course will go through a series of holistic processes before it’s completed. Calpino explained that during the Framework planning process, his architectural team would like to create an 18hole golf course that features several recreational designs and caters to all age levels, especially the next generation.
By Christopher Shuttlesworth Congressman Danny Davis and U.S. Representative Andre Carson recently introduced new legislation called The Julia Carson Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families Act of 2017. One of the goals of the legislation is to help fathers become more actively involved in the lives of their children. The legislation seeks to increase the upward economic mobility of Congressman Danny Davis custodial and noncustodial parents so they can actively participate in financially supporting their children. It also addresses issues evolving around child rearing as well as maintaining a positive, healthy and nonviolent relationships between fathers, their children and the co-parent. “In some communities, finding a child with a father in their house or in their life is like finding a needle in a haystack,” Davis said. “Many of them are

LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE COUNTRY, COOK COUNTY LAND BANK CELEBRATES LOCAL DEVELOPERS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS The Cook County Land Bank Authority celebrated the social enterprise’s success with over 100 stakeholders -- developers, community organizations, banks and civic and non-profit groups -- for their work in helping to create of the Cook County Land Bank, now the largest Land Bank in the country, at the first annual stakeholder appreciation luncheon. Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, founder and Chairwoman of the Land Bank, started the event by sharing the Land Bank’s founding story. “The Land Bank has always been a grassroots effort. Our first meetings were in church basements and ward offices, and now just a few short years later we’re the largest Land Bank in the country,” said Gainer. “Our mission is to build an organization to serve the people of Chicago and Cook County by rebuilding homes and focusing on homeownership, all while
providing critical neighborhood-based jobs.” Robert Rose, Executive Director of the Land Bank, also presented Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle with an award for her support. The Land Bank empowers local developers, community groups and potential homeowners by giving them the tools to transform their own communities from the ground up. The Land Bank obtains tax delinquent properties for rehab and sells them at below market rates to qualified, community-based developers to lead the rehab work. This not only helps keep revenue and jobs in the community, but it also helps these local developers grow their businesses. Then, these homes are sold to pre-qualified home buyers, getting these once vacant properties back onto the tax rolls. In just over one year, the Land Bank rehabbed more than 300 homes.

CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD VOTES TO ADOPT GOOD FOOD PURCHASING POLICY CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Public School Board votes on July 28, 2017, to adopt the updated CPS Wellness Policy committing the district to the Good Food Purchasing Program. Adoption of the Program in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will deepen and accelerate the District’s commitment to values-based purchasing that contributes to overall health and community wellness in the city and region. “We are excited to see Chicago Public Schools continue to be a leader by using procurement dollars to improve the freshness, quality and nutrition in their meals for students while growing opportunities for local, sustainable and fair producers and processors,” stated Rodger Cooley, Executive Director of the Chicago Food Policy Action Council. An important source of healthy food for children in the city, Chicago Public Schools make their meals free to all students while serving nearly 27 million breakfasts and 43 million lunches per school year and spending close to $80 million on food purchases in 2016 – 2017. The Good Food Purchasing Program provides a metric-based framework and set of tools that guide institutions to direct their buying power toward suppliers that meet benchmarks related to five core values: local economies, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, animal welfare, and nutrition.

VIDEO DEVELOPED BY EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS HELPS THE ELDERLY AND OTHERS AVOID HARMFUL FALLS
WASHINGTON — About a third of people who are 65 years of age and older will be involved in an accidental fall this year that diminishes their quality of life. That number increases the older a person gets. “Falls are complex and happen for a variety of reasons,” said Rebecca Parker, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of
Emergency Physicians. “But there are common steps that can be taken right now to greatly decrease your risk of falling for the first time, including those who have fallen multiple times.” Emergency physicians have created a video designed to give people who have fallen in the past — especially the more vulnerable elderly population — easy steps to avoid future falls. It’s called the “7 Step Fall Challenge.” Emergency physicians are confident that by following these steps, you will greatly decrease your risk of falling, especially repeat falling. LAW & POLITICS
Future child support cases to use widely accepted ‘Income Shares’ SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services announced today that the most widely used method nationwide to calculate child support will begin to be applied to new cases in Illinois starting July 1, following a bipartisan law signed by Governor Bruce Rauner last year. Child support orders established before July 1, 2017 will not change. Under the “income shares” model, child support will be calculated primarily by looking at typical costs for families in similar circumstances. The income of both parents will also be factored in. Currently, child support in Illinois is calculated primarily based on the income of the obligor – the parent who owes payments – and the number of children. The income shares model considers the typical costs to raise a child for a family at a similar income level as the parents in a case. If there are two incomes, both are added together to arrive at the amount needed to raise the child. Each parent’s contribution is then calculated by applying the methods laid out by the model. The portion owed by the parent who the child lives with is assumed to be paid because they reside together. Illinois now joins 39 other states and the District of Columbia in adopting the income shares model for calculating child support.

Help Stop the U.S. Senate from Killing Medicare/Medicaid and Canceling Coverage for 22 Million Americans The United States Senate is attempting this week to ramp through passage of an Affordable Health Care Bill aimed at undoing the Obama Care Health protection for millions of Americans. The Senate Bill which held no public hearings, would cut Medicare/Medicaid by making one time (block grant) payments to the state which would reduce available healthcare for millions of Americans and older Americans in particular. We need you and every person you can reach to call the U.S. Capitol Operator at 1 202 2243121, Press one for the U.S. Senate, a voice will ask you for your ZIP Code and then use that to connect you to your U.S. Senator. When that Office answers the phone, be sure to ask for the name of the person to whom your are speaking, identify you City and State and tell them to record you Objection to the Affordable Care Act slated for Senate Debate this week. The Democrats in the U.S. Senate are apposed to the Bill. Stopping the votes in support of this Bill by Senate Republicans will kill President Trumps plans to destroy Obama Care (the existing Affordable Care Act) and save coverage at least for the 22 million Americans who would be cut office, as well as benefits for Older Americans in particular. This is not a race issue, this is a human and American issue with thousands of lives at stake. Make that Call.
Back 2 School Illinois Launches Contest to Surprise Two Chicago Schools with Free Supplies for Every Student This Fall
Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low-income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom has announced the launch of this year’s “Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School” contest. Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies. Each and every child at both of the winning schools receives their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year. Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated. Whether you are a parent, community leader, concerned citizen, student or member of a faculty, you can enter the contest on behalf of a school. The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th. During the first week of classes this fall, the student bodies of both winning schools will be surprised by Back 2 School Illinois with the delivery of the free school supplies. While most students strive for success in the classroom, it can sometimes prove difficult when they don’t have the necessary school supplies. With B2SI’s annual contest, underserved Chicago students from the two winning schools are given the tools they need to thrive in the classroom. Providing these kits the first week of school lets the students know that they deserve a good education. For more information on the contest, visit http://b2si.org/ win-school-supplies-for-an-entire-school-contest
“I think one of the neat things is the way this course will be designed. It will have a whole series to play a 5,500 yard course or to play a 7,000 course and pretend you’re Tiger [Woods],” he said. “If you want to be a kid that wants to learn the game and you want to have a 3,000 yard course, then that’s here as well.” Calpino said Smith Group JJR is working with the city of Chicago to gather as much information as it can to understand what might work together to ultimately guide them to a detailed design on how the golf course will come together under one vision. “We’re looking at how we can serve the wide range of users,” he said. “We need to start to think about how we can cater to the next generation of golfers through recreational purposes such as picnicking, walking trails, usages of the park and how it all can knit into the golf course.” Calpino said Chicago has a great legacy of framework and holistic planning going back to the 1800s. He continued to say that Chicago has always been guided by some level of framework planning that looks holistically at the parks. “We’re at the point where we are reflective of the history, but we’re looking at today and the future to make sure we have the right frame work plan to guide us,” Calpino said. Dr. Carol Adams, who is a 48-year South Shore
resident, said she will help keep the community involved during the golf course planning process. Adams said a lot of longtime residents have felt neglected from past community projects, and really want to make sure this golf course project is respectful of the legacy of the neighborhood as it propels the community into the future. “There needs to be some sense of a mutual vision of where we want to end up, where we would like to see our community and what we think our neighborhood deserves,” she said. “The community golfers have asked us to please incorporate ideas that would encourage young people to get engaged and get involved in the game and grow the game.” Adams highlighted that they have started golfing programs within the area high schools and an orientation for a caddy program at Jackson Park, which is subsidized by the Western Golf Association. Calpino said the month of June was the discovering and listening phase of the 18-hole golf course, adding, that during the middle of the summer, his architectural team will begin to input ideas from the listening phase to generate the next generation of golfers. This process will also serve as guide in terms of how it will be created. Ultimately, he said, his team will look at the architectural drawings of the plan in September and draft the updated framework later in the fall.

obviously incarcerated or many of them have never been married to the mother of the child, so they’ve never spent time with the child as well.” He said the government is trying to change the fatherless cycle to the best of its ability by instilling values into the minds and hearts of young people growing up, so they can feel a different sense of responsibility. “In a community you sometimes have one area that has a two-parent household where a child has the opportunity to grow, develop and take advantage of everything that can be afforded to them,” Davis said. “But if you come to an area where another child who is born on the same day to a single parent home that lives with their mother, then if she is working, she is earning poverty wages. But then, she can’t go to work because she has no one to keep or watch the child so these children are seriously disadvantaged,” he said. He added, community leaders must continue to do everything within their power to change the paradigm so that different levels of hope and possibility can exist in childrens’ lives. For the last three years, Davis said he has taken children to visit their fathers on the day before Father’s Day who are incarcerated at The Sheridan Correctional Center. “It’s proven to be a very successful effort,” he said. “[Survival] is important to Black life in America,” he added. “When you’re talking about families…if any part of that unit is missing, then it further disadvantages that family,” he stated.
Travel ban on 6-majority Muslim countries affects refugees except those who fall under family exception (Chicago, IL) Refugees from around the world and nationals from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen now face a ban on entrance into the US based on the United States Supreme Court’s recent decision unless they can show some family or other relationship to a person or organization in the US. Many of the world’s most vulnerable refugees have no connections in the U.S., but they look to this country as a safe haven from the harm they have suffered in their countries of origin. The Supreme Court’s ruling puts their lives in jeopardy and denies safety to millions, experts say. “Today the Supreme Court enables the White House’s hateful and discriminatory agenda,” said Lawrence Benito, chief executive officer of Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. “The ruling threatens a core aspect of our national identity and seeks to normalize anti-Muslim discrimination in America. We will not let this happen. We support our Muslim brothers and sisters, and all refugees seeking a new home in the United States. Everyone deserves to live in peace, and our friends and allies will not stand down,” he said.

Job Hunting? 5 Reasons to Consider Using a Staffing Agency
(StatePoint) If you’re an active job seeker or simply looking to expand your career horizons, many experts say that in today’s market, working with a recruiter can give you a substantial leg-up. Combining new technology and staffing expertise to speed up and simplify your job search, these benefits may account for why the staffing and recruitment industry is growing substantially. Here are five reasons to consider working with a staffing agency, from the experts at Randstad US, a human resources consulting firm. • Access to “hidden” jobs. Recruiters are often tasked by companies to hire for positions not advertised publicly. The only way to find them is through a staffing agency. Often, these positions are the most sought after in the marketplace, and in some of the most desirable workplaces. • A huge number of companies rely on them. As the economy embraces an “on-demand” workforce, more employers are turning to staffing firms who use emerging job search technologies alongside their human instincts to deliver the best-fit talent they seek. In fact, more than eight in 10 employers (82 percent) at least somewhat agree that by 2025, their reliance on staffing/recruiting partners will increase, according to Randstad’s Workplace 2025 study. • Recruiters can be your career agent. Wading through hundreds of online job boards, company ads and social media sites can be complicated, time-consuming and frustrating. You don’t have to go it alone. A recruiter
can help you with your job search, enhance your resume, provide career advice and more. The best recruiters look beyond your resume to understand your career goals, workplace expectations and values to identify the best-fit jobs for you within the digital landscape. • Not just for temps. Many people assume staffing agencies only offer temporary positions. Recruiters are often asked to search for full-time, permanent and temporary-to-hire positions across a wide range of industries. Even those who begin working as a temporary employee are often hired permanently after proving their value. In fact, the Workplace 2025 study says 56 percent of companies say many of the top talent in their company began as temporary workers. • It’s free. There aren’t many things you can get for free these days, but the many benefits of working with a staffing company are among them. “Be sure to work with a recruiter who is passionate about helping you reach your potential,” says Jim Link, chief human resources officer, Randstad North America. “They should play the role of trusted human partner in today’s technology-driven world to ensure you are recognized as an individual, not just another resume.” Given that more than half of employers (51 percent) named staffing/recruiting firms as their most effective method for finding full-time and contract workers, job seekers should consider taking advantage of this resource to improve their job search chances.

Athleisure Trend Let’s You Look Good in Casual Clothes
(StatePoint) From fitness conscious consumers to busy moms who are always on the go, casual athletic attire is becoming a socially acceptable and on-trend style. In fact, it’s so popular, it carries its own name: “athleisure.” It may sound like a piece of cake to dress in casual and relaxed clothing. However, avoiding a “just rolled out of bed look” is not so simple. If you find that comfy yoga pants or joggers are increasingly becoming a staple in your wardrobe, consider these tips to ensure you always look put together when sporting them. • The right shoe goes a long way: Forgo the traditional or “core” running shoe for this look. Such brands as Adidas, Converse, Nike and Vans have introduced updates to their classic offerings. While still inspired by an athletic lifestyle, variations in color, height, patterns and textures accommodate the growing trend for casual wear. In addition to looking good, they are breathable and functional -- just in case you wanted to sneak in a light workout during the day! For example, the popular Adidas Baseline still comes in a classic white. However, this year they introduced a version in peach, a fun and new spring color. • Get the family involved: Did you grow up loving your Chuck Taylors? The good news is that new athleisure wear is available as a full family offering, so that infants, tweens and teens can also enjoy comfortable, yet stylish, shoes. In response to this trend, family-friendly retailer Rack Room Shoes recently introduced The Athletic Shop, a shop-within-a-shop concept that highlights nationally recognized name brand products for those with an active lifestyle. “As we see the athleisure trend continue to grow, we’re continually adding new introductions from athletic brands for the entire family,” says Adam McDermott, senior project manager of The Athletic Shop, Rack Room Shoes. • Polish off the look: Consider taking some extra time to do hair and makeup on the day you select a casual outfit from your closet. Or try pairing joggers and athleisure footwear with a nice handbag, statement scarf or leather jacket. This will help put the look together nicely. With all this in mind, the experts at Rack Room Shoes are focusing on comfortable, functional and stylish athleisure-inspired footwear. More information is available at rackroomshoes.com. To look your best when dressing casually, be sure to craft your outfits with care.
The athleisure trend is growing with designers continuously adding new introductions for members of the entire family.
Be Fashionable and Fit (StatePoint) Staying active doesn’t just keep a waistline in check, it benefits every part of the body, including the brain. Now is the time to renew your commitment to staying fit. Here are some top tips to get moving more. • Rethink Your Commute. Leave the car keys at home and lace up your sneakers instead. Commuting to work by bike is a great way to bookend the work day with some aerobic activity. • Take a Walk. Even the most adventurous weekend warriors are sometimes required to sit or stand in place for long stretches in the workplace. If your job keeps you sedentary, break up the day with a brisk walk outdoors during lunch. Throughout the day, stretch your legs with a loop around your work station. It sounds counter-intuitive, but a short break spent being physically active can help boost your overall productivity. • Get Out of Town. Skip the gym and plan a day or weekend trip dedicated to physical fitness. Whether it’s hiking a nearby trail, kayaking a local river, or doing yoga in the park, there’s nothing like getting your exercise fix in nature. • Gear up. New tech gear is helping support people’s efforts to get outdoors and stay fit, so consider gearing up before your next adventure. For example, Casio’s PRO TREK WSD-F20 Smart Outdoor Watch is water-resistant and equipped with GPS capabilities and a full-color map display. Users can download maps in advance to continue getting navigation guidance even when they are offline or out of range. Vital information, such as travel speed, elapsed time and distance, is close at hand without checking your smartphone -- making it a good choice for cyclists. Other tools include a compass, altimeter and barometer. • Try Something New. Change up your fitness routine from time to time to avoid hitting a plateau. This will keep things mentally interesting so you don’t lose interest in exercise. What’s more, a new class or activity may “surprise” your body by working different muscles in a new way. With a few simple strategies and the right tools, incorporating fitness into your life can be fun and easy.
(Family Features) As the weather gets warmer, mosquitoes can prevent homeowners from reaping the benefits of living life outside. According to a Harris Poll conducted on behalf of TruGreen, 85 percent of Americans say that mosquitoes limit their family’s outdoor activities during the months they’re most active. The same survey also found that nearly two-thirds of Americans are concerned about protecting themselves and their family from Zika or other mosquito-borne illnesses. A majority of respondents reported using bug spray on themselves and their family members to combat mosquitoes outdoors at home. Although it’s the leading preventative measure, still only half say it is most effective at preventing mosquitoes from biting. Depending on where you live, the mosquito biting season lasts 5-7 months. If spray isn’t adequate to combat the mosquitoes at your home, it may be necessary to take additional measures. These tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the pest control experts at TruGreen can help combat mosquitoes outside of the home: Remove standing water. Mosquitoes generally lay eggs near water, so once a week take time to dump anything that
may hold water in the yard. This includes buckets, kiddie pools and birdbaths. Don’t overlook items like toys, planters and flowerpot saucers. For containers intended to hold water, like cisterns or rain barrels, regularly check that the lid is secure so mosquitoes can’t gain access. A finely woven mesh is a good alternative if there is no lid. If you can’t cover the container and won’t be drinking from it, use a larvicide to treat the water. Be wary of unexpected reservoirs. Natural features such as shrubbery and tree stumps can also collect water, and they may be more difficult to remedy. Keep dense shrubs thinned and pruned. Increasing the air flow can make these areas less attractive. If removing a tree stump is impractical, a professional can guide you in proper treatment. Apply a broad-application pest eliminator. Use an outdoor insect spray or professional service to kill mosquitoes in areas where they rest all over the yard. A professionally applied treatment such as TruGreen Mosquito Defense targets pests where they live, and the company’s professionally trained specialists use an innovative mosquito control formula to treat all areas of the yard where mosquitoes hide, including trees, shrubs, mulched areas and all types of ground cover.

From the day we are born, there is within each of us a durable, persuasive, and exciting will to live. We are hardwired in this way. As we come of age, mature, and go through the peaks and valleys of life, we sometimes become weathered, perhaps even jaded by experience. The storms of change, challenge, difficulty, and hardship seem to erode our wires and interrupt our connections. As we allow these happenings to serve as the experiences that educate and condition our soul, we sometimes forget our connection to and loose sight of the durable, compelling, and exciting source of life. Yet, every breath we take is a literal and figurative affirmation of life. Every heartbeat is a harbinger for the forward pull of life that reminds us of all that is in store. Nothing can override Life in you, for in Him you live, move, and have your being. Your life is the very life of God, Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. The challenges we go through, in whatever form, do not impede or impair the life of God expressing in, through, and as us. You are divinely designed, by the Life Giving One, with the purpose to promote life. All within you and about you is the strength you need for you are, “strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” Affirm life, affirm that you are strong in the Lord, and affirm that your body is the temple of the living God. You are a new creation in Christ, who makes all things new. You have a durable, persuasive, and exciting will to live. You did not give it to yourself. Rather, it was the gift you received in the beginning. The past is behind you and all of God is before you. Refresh your wires, reclaim your connection, and live victoriously! (BPT) - The idea of retirement may start out as a distant dream. You have hopes and plans for that special time that seems so far away. Sooner or later that time will be here and hopefully you’ll be ready. However, recent research shows many people are not prepared to enjoy a financially stable retirement. A study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute states: * Only 18 percent of people are very confident they will have the savings they need for a comfortable retirement; * One-third of people aren’t confident they will be able to cover basic living expenses in retirement; * 45 percent of Americans aren’t confident they will be able to cover their medical expenses once they’re retired; * 3 in 10 workers report that preparing for retirement causes them to feel mentally or emotionally stressed. Securing your retirement through financial planning “Many people recognize the value of saving for a comfortable retirement. They just don’t know how to manage their money effectively to maximize their savings and realize their dreams,” says Geoffrey Brown, CEO of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. “To create an actionable strategy for saving, consumers should look for financial planners who are fiduciaries for help. These professionals are entrusted to manage assets or wealth while putting the client’s best interests first at all times.” Financial planners provide support and advice on a wide array of
financial topics, including budgeting, estate planning, investments, education funding, insurance and risk management, healthcare planning, and, of course, retirement planning and senior issues. Financial planners who are members of NAPFA are all feeonly and compensated solely through fees from their clients, rather than by transaction-based commissions. Most commissions-based advisors are salespeople rather than comprehensive financial planners. All NAPFA members also sign a fiduciary oath, meaning they must disclose any conflict, or potential conflict, to their clients prior to and throughout the advisory engagement. Working with a fee-only fiduciary means you can be sure the advice you receive from your financial planner is in your best interest, not their best interest. To find the right financial planner for you and your needs, follow these tips from NAPFA: * Finalize your own initial strategy. Before looking for a financial planner, think about the goals you want to attain: What are you saving for? Are you trying to prepare for retirement, save for a new home or put a child through college? Maybe
you’re saving for all the above. Once you understand your goals, it will be easier to find a planner who can help you reach them. * Select several advisors. Don’t narrow your focus when looking for the right financial planner. Instead, consult websites like NAPFA.org. Use the NAPFA Find an Advisor search platform to locate a financial planner who can help you get where you’re going. Word of mouth is fine for some pursuits, but your financial goals are specific to your life, and probably differ greatly from those of your friends. Once you have a “short list” of possible planners, then you are ready to move on to the next step. * Do your homework. When it comes to vetting a financial planner, a little research goes a long way. Once you’ve collected the names of a couple of planners that appeal to you, learn a little more about them. Visit their company websites or review their LinkedIn profiles to learn more about the company and the planner. You can also search the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission site or BrokerCheck by FINRA to learn more about the planner’s disciplinary history. It’s important to review an advisor’s
disciplinary records, their practice focus and their credentials - such as whether or not they are a Certified Financial Planner(TM) (CFP(R)) professional. This work can help you ask the right questions when setting up your first in-person meeting. * Meet them face-to-face. If you like everything you’ve found so far, then it’s time to meet your potential financial planner. Set up a face-toface meeting and bring questions of your own or use a Financial Planner Diagnostic tool. Pay attention not only to the answers your potential planner gives, but also to your comfort level during
the conversation. Your financial planner will have a large role in your future success so it’s important that you feel comfortable with the relationship. * Review your results initially and annually. Once you’ve finished your interviews, take the time to review all the information you’ve gathered and pick the financial planner that best fits your needs. After that, plan to review the performance of your finances every year. Your relationship with your planner is ongoing and a successful partnership is one in which you feel comfortable, your savings grow and you’re left excited and confident about what’s in store for your financial future. To learn more about how you can find the right financial planner for you, visit NAPFA.org.

Don’t Let Your Wireless Bill Ruin Your Big Trip (StatePoint) Travel can be rife with inconvenience, from delayed flights to lost luggage and more. And the high cost of staying connected via mobile devices is an additional headache for a growing number of travelers, especially those with international adventures ahead. This summer travel season, T-Mobile and research firm GfK released a new study that shows Americans’ reliance on their smartphones, and how potentially pricey travel could be for those who don’t understand the costs of international roaming. The study found that 69 percent of Americans take their smartphone when they leave the country and travelers are willing to make extreme tradeoffs for connectivity and the ability to maintain contact with friends and family. Indeed, more than half (55 percent) of Americans would rather lose their luggage than their smartphone, and two thirds (66 percent) of Americans would trade their preferred seat on a plane to ensure they have their cell phone when traveling abroad. While people plan for the cost of hotels, airfare and other travel expenses, they can sometimes underestimate the cost of connectivity while traveling if they are not careful. To help you prepare for the busy travel season ahead, T-Mobile is offering tips to make sure you and your family can stay connected without coming home to an outrageous wireless bill. • Know your plan. Shockingly, six in 10 survey respondents (59 percent) confessed to not knowing what their international plan rates were. Considering that the average week abroad for a family of four can be more than $7,000 if you don’t plan ahead, this could be a major setback when you return from that fun vacation! In order to avoid bill shock, seek out a plan that helps eliminate unexpected expenses. For example, T-Mobile ONE is designed with passport-holders in mind, and automatically includes texting and data at no additional cost in more than 140 countries and destinations. And if you travel to Mexico and Canada a lot, you’ll be happy to know that high-speed data in those countries is included. To learn more about the plan offerings, visit t-mobile.com. • Use data to your advantage. Fifty eight percent of survey respondents reported being worried about not knowing the language in a foreign country and 66 percent are worried about getting lost. With the right carrier, and access to unlimited data, your phone can break down these barriers for you! Make sure you have the apps you need and a plan that lets you utilize those apps for everything from maps and navigation to translation technology. • Use Wi-Fi when you can. If you don’t have a data friendly travel plan, put your phone in airplane mode and only use Wi-Fi when it’s available. You won’t be alone. Staying connected is such a concern that one in five (21 percent) smartphone users reported going to extreme measures, like eating at a restaurant they didn’t like, just to use the Wi-Fi, or even illegally pirating strangers’ Wi-Fi connections! So, take your family somewhere exciting this travel season and don’t forget your smartphones! You’ll be glad you have them while traveling, particularly if you take steps to keep your bill in-check.
