INITIATIVE OPENS UP NEW DOORS TO

BLACK FEMALE TEENS

Brave Initiatives is currently a Chicago-based program that develops high school girls in the area of computer science and technology, and teaches them to solve social issues in their communities through computer coding. Some of the young ladies who come into the program start off with the desire of not wanting to code or believing that they can’t code. But with weeks of training, they ultimately leave the program with a strong passion to work in the field.

1 1 INITIATIVE OPENS UP NEW DOORS TO BLACK FEMALE TEENS

By Chris Shuttlesworth

Brave Initiatives is an influential Chicagobased nonprofit organization that has offered free- computer coding camps to high school girls over the past two years. A program, founded by three women, was started out of their passion for computer science and technology. Emily Harburg, who is Brave Initiatives Director of Curriculum and Program Development, said although she and her co-founders feared studying computer science in their earlier years, they still wanted to create a program to encourage young ladies to learn and utilize the skill of computer science. “Part of our goal is to create programs that allow girls to get the spirit and confidence in computer science,” Harburg said. “So, when they’re graduating high school, they are considering computer science programs and looking at colleges that may allow them to study computer science to help push them into this career.” She said it’s been amazing to see the kinds of solutions that the young ladies, who didn’t even

have an interest in computer coding, come in and combat social issues within their respective communities, and ultimately realize how big their voice can be. “It’s been really amazing to watch girls come in who didn’t think they could code or ones who had no desire to code and then see the incredible things they came up with,” Harburg said. “The girls are building websites to solve issues in their community. So, girls come in and are passionate about bullying or passionate about stereotypes or improving the educational system in schools and build websites that solve those problems.” She said Brave Initiatives will have four camps during the summer of 2017, which will begin in mid-June and will end in August. Young women who are interested can apply online at https://www.braveinitiatives.com. Harburg added, that there will also be a summer program in San Francisco, California and Jamaica because Brave Initiatives is trying to have the program not only in the U.S., but around the world.

“There has been a lot of research on diverse teens being better applicants,” she said. “So, Brave Initiatives is discussing to see how we can get companies to hire those types of women as well.” Harburg said an estimate of 75 percent of jobs will be in computer science by the year 2030. So, she said Brave Initiatives is trying to help more women get inside a male-dominated field that currently only represents “25% of females in the workforce,” according to a Brave Initiatives press release. She continued to explain that there are a lot of technology companies looking to hire women, but there aren’t too many women who are trained in the field and who have the skills to fill the roles. So, ultimately the tech roles are predominately filled by white men. “We really feel that we need more women in these roles and we need to get them in this field,” Harburg said. “So, as these jobs come in and continue to increase, women will have the ability to be at the table and take those jobs.”

Collins urges governor to sign automatic voter registration into law SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Jacqueline Collins joined representatives of Common Cause Illinois and numerous other activists, advocates and fellow Springfield lawmakers at a press conference in Chicago on June 6, 2017, to commemorate the passage of automatic voter registration in Senate Bill 1933, which passed the General Assembly toward the end of the May legislative session. Collins said the next step is encouraging people to vote. “This is indicative of what we can accomplish when we work across the partisan divide,” said Collins, D-Chicago. “I’ve been challenging potential voters to want to move beyond that apathy and the hopelessness, to understand that the vote is their voice, and voting does matter.” Senate Bill 1933 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of the General Assembly. It awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

Illinois AFL-CIO Endorses JB Pritzker For Governor Chicago, IL — JB Pritzker was endorsed on June 6, 2017, by the Illinois AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 900,000 union members across the state. The endorsement gives “a powerful force behind his bid to challenge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018,” according to a JB Pritzker press release. The Chicago Tribune reported that the unusually early move by the Illinois AFL-CIO, coming nine months before the March primary election, is a significant political boost for Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor who has vowed to self-fund his campaign and spend to elect Democratic House and Senate candidates. The union backing gives him much-needed boots on the ground. From WLS-TV: University of Illinois Labor Professor Bob Bruno says a labor endorsement can also make a big difference in a close primary and general election race. “Organized labor can build a coalition, it can aggregate votes and it can do education,” said Bruno.

Duckworth Speaks At Rally Against Cuts to Medicaid

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) joined Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Ron Wyden (DOR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) at a rally on June 6, 2017, with disability rights advocates against a $1.4 trillion in cuts to Medicaid which President Donald Trump has proposed in his healthcare repeal bill and budget blueprint. Senator Duckworth warned that the cuts would hurt students across the country who benefit from Medicaid-funded counselors and school nurses and jeopardize the healthcare coverage of both the millions of Veterans who rely on Medicaid and the two-thirds of nursing home residents whose bills are paid by Medicaid. “This President’s proposed cuts to Medicaid would fall hardest on the people who need it most and that’s unacceptable,” Duckworth said. “It is not only a broken promise to our seniors and those with disabilities who depend on Medicaid to live with dignity and participate as equal members of our society, but also to our veterans, who deserve better than having their critical health coverage stripped away from them.”

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a landmark case on whether the government needs a warrant to access a person’s cell phone location history. The American Civil Liberties Union is co-counsel in the case, Carpenter v. United States. In 2011, without getting a probable cause warrant, the government obtained from cell service companies months’ worth of phone location records for suspects in a robbery investigation in Detroit. For one suspect, Timothy Carpenter, the records covered 127 days and revealed 12,898 separate points of location data. After Carpenter was convicted at trial, based in part on the cell phone location evidence, he appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 2–1 that no warrant is required under the Fourth Amendment. Team Selected to Develop Michael Reese Site in Bronzeville Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently announced selection of a master development team to lead the revitalization of the Michael Reese site in Bronzeville. The team is led by Farpoint Development, Draper & Kramer, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, McLaurin Development Partners, and Bronzeville Community Development Partnership, among others. The consultant architect for the team is Skidmore Owings & Merrill. The 10-year project is expected to create up to approximately 36,000 temporary and permanent jobs. “After sitting vacant for nearly a decade, today we are taking a major step towards the transformation and revitalization of the Michael Reese site,” Mayor Emanuel said. “Over the next 10 years this team will work with the community and the City to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime redevelopment that will generate economic opportunities and growth in Bronzeville and in neighborhoods throughout the city of Chicago.” The initial phase may include a logistics center to accommodate McCormick Place truck traffic on multiple levels, potentially with new associated event, exhibit and/ or meeting space. Planned later phases include more than 5 million square feet of technology-oriented commercial spaces, retail uses, homes and a hotel, depending on market demand. “The team’s substantial development and design experience will ensure each development phase will maximize its benefits to the community and entire city, which is reflected in the long-term goal to assimilate the site with the lakefront, adjacent residential properties, and McCormick Place,” said David L. Reifman, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development. “I look forward to moving forward with the process that will

determine the scope and impact of this historic project.” The overall project scope will be subject to a formal redevelopment agreement that will be finalized through a community-based process that will be subject to approval by the City Council and Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) Board. The proposal estimates that, at full build-out, the project will generate more than 24,000 permanent jobs and more than 12,000 construction jobs. Over 20 years, the project is projected to generate more than $520 million in property taxes and $164 million in sales taxes. The Michael Reese Site is the former location of the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center at 2960 S. Ellis Ave. The hospital complex closed in 2008 and the City acquired the property in 2009. The Request for Proposals (RFP) issued for the 49acre site last fall sought mixed-use development proposals that add mixed-use vibrancy to Chicago’s south lakefront communities. In cooperation with the MPEA), the RFP included MPEA’s 28-acre Marshalling Yards Site to the east. The selected bid includes an initial proposal of $144.45 million in compensation for the Reese site and the marshalling yards. The proposed payment terms will be considered and finalized as part of the formal redevelopment agreement, which will be subject to City Council and MPEA Board approval. The proposal also includes plans for a new park and Metra train station at 31st Street; new pedestrian connections to the lakefront; and a rebuilt Cottage Grove Avenue. Previous projects completed by members of the winning bidding team include 1K Fulton, Pullman Park, Chinatown Library, Motor Row Plaza and Kennedy King College.

1 Black Business Partners Disrupt Multi-Billion Dollar National Coffee Supply Chain

(Black PR Wire) TULSA, Ok. - African Bean Company is the first nationally certified, African American owned coffee supply company providing national distribution. The company’s coffee is branded Roots Java Coffee. From small communities on the Mississippi Delta to Brownstones in Harlem, African Americans have historically been devoted coffee consumers—helping to drive this multi-billion dollar industry. African Bean Company, founded in 2010 by Dr. Fitzgerald Hill, is making history as he and his partner, Clifton L. Taulbert (President & CEO) ensure that African Americans are now on the owner/supply side of the industry. This is truly historic. The Company’s rich tasting coffees are the result of beans grown by independent Rwandan farmers in the fertile, high mountain region of the country. These farmers, many of whom survived the horrific genocide, are now transforming their lives and their country by growing and harvesting the most sought after coffee beans in the world. Taulbert, who heads the operations of this national company, always smiles when asked about their market receptivity. “It’s not easy to tackle a market that is dominated by major international corporations with little or no room for a start-up company to play,” Taulbert said. “However, African Bean Company is here for the long haul. Using entrepreneurial tactics and plain ol’ hard work, they are making their way into homes (Online) with their signature 12 oz. bags of Ground and Whole Bean, along with their cases of filter and fractional packs for hospitals, country clubs, restaurants, and academic institutions commercially delivered across America. Organizations Awarded $1 Million in Grants to Support Chicago Entrepreneurs Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago (“WBC”) recently announced the grantees of the Blackstone Inclusive Entrepreneurship Challenge (“Blackstone Challenge”). For the first year of the Blackstone Challenge, eight organizations were awarded grants totaling $1 million to connect diverse Chicago entrepreneurs, particularly people of color, immigrants, women and veterans, with resources to help scale and grow their businesses. These grants are part of a $3 million commitment made in January 2017. “By investing in organizations that support diverse entrepreneurs we create economic opportunities that reach all parts of Chicago,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are incredibly grateful that Chicago was chosen as the pilot city for the Blackstone Challenge program, and look forward to seeing it generate jobs and growth as we build on its success.” Nearly 50 organizations submitted proposals, of which the top eight were selected to receive grants. Starting next month, the grantees will focus on deploying strategies to recruit, engage and support diverse entrepreneurs throughout the Chicagoland area. At the end of the first year, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago will announce the process to distribute an additional $2 million in grant funding. “We look forward to seeing what our eight awardees will accomplish in the coming year,” Jon Gray, Global Head of Real Estate at Blackstone said. “We believe it’s critical that any entrepreneur – regardless of where they live – has access to the resources they need to scale and grow their businesses. Our hope is that this program will serve as a model for other communities across the country to support a diverse group of entrepreneurs.” Through this initiative, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation, in partnership with ChicagoNEXT of World Business Chicago, continues its mission of investing in entrepreneurship to support new ventures and job creation. “Chicago’s greatest strength is our diversity, so we need to be

targeted and intentional about supporting entrepreneurs from marginalized communities,” Jimmy Odom, Director of Inclusive Entrepreneurship for ChicagoNEXT said. “This Blackstone Challenge cohort will work together to make sure a diverse representation of entrepreneurs get the resources they need.” The Blackstone Challenge will be the initial focus of the ChicagoNEXT Inclusive Entrepreneurship Leadership Council, whose thirteen members, composed of civic and business leaders, were announced last month. The council will offer strategic direction for the program, mentor and advise the grantees, and use their convening power to support regional program events. “The selected organizations have proposed a wide range of strategies to support inclusive entrepreneurship,” Amy Stursberg, Executive Director of the Blackstone Charitable Foundation said. “The Foundation is proud to serve as a catalytic funder to support these exceptional organizations as they test and scale their programs, and contribute to Chicago’s thriving entrepreneurship landscape.” The following organizations were selected because they offered new, innovative projects to expand their work driving inclusive entrepreneurship: Bethel New Life, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bethel New Life, an organization focused on bringing individuals and families out of poverty, to launch a Business and Technology Program featuring a training course, workshop series and an expanded tech lab, in Chicago’s West Side. BLUE1647, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow BLUE1647, an entrepreneurship and technology center, to double BLUEINCUBATE, an accelerator offering shared workspace and membership to start-ups, tech-enabled businesses and individuals, allowing these entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, integrate technology into their strategy, and network with stakeholders and investors. Bunker Labs, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bunker Labs, an organization that helps military veterans launch

and grow businesses through educational programs and networking, to create Guided Virtual Cohorts, a remote, high touch version of the successful Bunker in a Box platform, and the CEOcircle Program, a program which provides additional resources to later stage founders. 1871, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support 1871, a hub for digital startup entrepreneurship in Chicago, to create the 1871 Community Curriculum Project that will digitalize content from its workshops and events to make it accessible to a wider audience of entrepreneurs. Future Founders, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support Future Founders, an organization focused on inspiring the next generation of young entrepreneurs, in the creation of Future Founders Chicago Cohort, a program that fosters the development of millennial businesses from communities of color, women, veterans and immigrants with 1-on-1 biweekly mentoring, monthly cohort workshops, and an intensive two-day summit. i.c.stars, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow i.c.stars, an organization that provides technology-based training for low-income adults, to expand Enterprise Next, a three month lean startup training and incubation program, and to add a pitch night and Idea Hacks. UI Labs, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support UI Labs, an innovation accelerator that brings together partners from “university + industry,” to create the City Digital: Inclusive Entrepreneurship for Collaborative Innovation, a partnership between City Digital and Colony 5 to help community based startups tackle complex urban challenges and explore ideas on smart city developments through entrepreneurship. Women’s Business Development Center, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow the Women’s Business Development Center, which aims to strengthen women’s entrepreneurship and impact on the economy, to expand ScaleUp, a program which provides entrepreneurial education, one -on-one support and mentoring, to two new neighborhoods including West Rogers Park and South Chicago.

Did You Know Your Eye Makeup Could Be Making You Sick?

Be the Envy of Your Dream Cruise With a Flattering Swimsuit (NewsUSA) - Booking a cruise is exhilarating, preparing for a cruise is exciting but finding the perfect bathing suit is laced with a different kind of anticipation. There’s a lot of pressure involved when women have to find a suit that’s flattering, cute and comfortable. Unfortunately, it’s a tall clothing order to fill, and the industry is poorly equipped to meet the needs of real women. However, packing for a cruise vacation is far less stressful when ladies can count on their Girltrunks. What are Girltrunks, you ask? Don’t blush if you’ve never heard of them, but please expand your swimsuit horizons. Girltrunks, designed by Debbie Kuhn, dove onto the scene in 2009 to add some comfort and versatility to the world of limited bathing suit options. For the many women who don’t fit into clingy one-pieces or revealing bikinis, Girltrunks are a stylish alternative. Kuhn paired tankini-styled tops with tailored swim trunks to create a comfortable yet fashionable look for real women. While this swimsuit is great for any water excursion, it’s the ultimate choice for cruise vacations. When suitcase space is slim, and every outfit must work in multiple scenarios, Girltrunks are ideal. They are made from a quickly drying fabric, and they come in sizes 4-24 for all the women who aren’t sized like Goldie Locks. Girltrunks are the only swimsuit choice that provide leg coverage for women -- with shorts in two different lengths and two different styles of tops. Ladies don’t need sarongs, skirts or cover-up sundresses. This outfit works for swimming, snorkeling, lounging, various sports and any other cruise activities. Thanks to Kuhn, a real woman considering the desires and insecurities of other real women, girls of all ages can enjoy swimming events without being embarrassed of naturally thick thighs or not-so-flat stomachs. “I felt so liberated, in swimwear of all things, and I wanted to share that feeling with other women,” says Kuhn after she found her clothing gem. (Family Features) Finding ways to curb your monthly spending may leave you feeling like you’re living to work, not the other way around. When you’ve trimmed the excess from your monthly budget and still need to cut back more, it may take some creative thinking to get those dollars and cents to start adding up. For most people, the first step toward saving on bills is getting rid of all the extra spending. However, that’s not always enough, and it’s not always practical or realistic to cut down to bare bones. Before you stress about where to cut next, take a look at these tips for little changes that can add up to big savings: 1. Reconsider your cable source. There are literally dozens – maybe more – streaming services available to fulfill your viewing needs. Most people subscribe to a cable or satellite package that has plenty of excess channels. Many streaming options allow you to take a more custom approach so you’re only paying for the programming you actually watch. 2. Update your mobile phone and plan. Do some checking to ensure you’re getting the best value on your mobile service. Make sure you’re only paying for the features and

services you use, and that you’re not paying for more data or access than you need. You may even find that looking into a prepaid program like the NUU Mobile Smartphone bundle is the most cost-effective route. You can get one of the latest Android smartphones with up to 2 months of the Lycamobile $29 monthly unlimited plan included. The plan provides unlimited nationwide talk, text and data, as well as unlimited international texts and a generous international calling allowance. With no contract and the ability to make the switch in minutes, there is no need T:10.75”

to worry about spending valuable time waiting in line for a new device and plan. 3. Conserve water usage. A long, steamy shower may be part of your morning ritual, but if you’re looking for places to cut, it only makes sense to look at ways to quit sending money down the drain. Cut back on shower time and take other steps to modify your water bill, such as researching non-peak times for cheaper dishwasher and laundry operation. 4. Keep power under control. If you habitually flit from room to room and leave lights on in your wake, you’re simply wasting money. Turn lights off when you leave the room and make sure electronics aren’t drawing power when they’re not in use, not only for safety but for savings, too. 5. Adjust your climate. Changing your thermostat even a couple of degrees can make a big difference in your bill. Rely on dimmed lights, window treatments and fans to help keep rooms cool, and always nudge the temperature up or down several degrees when you’ll be away for an extended period. Small changes in your daily habits can have a surprisingly big impact, especially over a period of time. Explore more budgetfriendly options to fit your lifestyle at nuumobile.com.

(Family Features) Summer is perfect for staying active and spending time outdoors with loved ones, but the frantic pace of the season and overload of activities can take a toll on the entire family. With a little care and pampering, you can enjoy summer to the fullest while still keeping your family rejuvenated. Eat Well. Food is fuel, and it’s necessary to keep the entire family energized. During warmer weather, cravings often lean toward lighter foods, making it the perfect time to add extra servings of seasonal fruits or vegetables to the family table each night. Also remember to ensure family members are drinking plenty of water as extended time in the sun can lead to dehydration and dry skin if fluids aren’t frequently replenished. Make Sleep A Priority. Sleep is as important to your body as nutrition and exercise, and making it a priority can be beneficial, especially when your family’s calendar is packed with events. Sufficient, highquality sleep contributes to a healthy immune system and helps repair damage done throughout the day. It also positively impacts metabolism and overall function while contributing to emotional and mental well-being. Most doctors recommend 6-8 hours per night for adults, and kids of all ages typically require even more, so work on getting into a nightly routine to ensure all members of the family are getting the rest they need. Pamper Yourself at Home. Once you’ve completed chores in the heat or spent time enjoying family activities in the sun, some simple pampering

can be done at home to rejuvenate skin. Start with your hands, which are at the center of everything you do and often the first point of contact with an activity, whether it’s cooking, gardening, crafting or aiding friends and family. The unique formula of Softsoap Hand Wash Plus Lotion liquid hand soap is made with a touch of lotion to lock in moisture for clean, soft hands. Available in Shea & Cocoa Butter, Aloe Water & Lime and Orchid & Coconut Milk fragrances, this innovative formula can make your hands irresistibly smooth, so your touch is always a soft touch. Take Time to Exercise. Even a little activity can have a huge impact. The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderateintensity activity at least five days a week. Taking time out of your family’s busy summer schedule to go for a walk, ride bikes around the park or neighborhood, or play a game outside together can contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and feeling more energized. Slow Down. It’s easy to spread yourself too thin, especially in the summer when there are often more activities requiring your attention and attendance. When you get caught up in trying to make the most out of every second of every day, it can take a toll on both your family’s physical and emotional well-being. Slow down and take that well-deserved personal time – even just an hour a day – to do something you enjoy with the ones you love. Remember to take small breaks during activities to stretch or take a short walk to help relieve potential stress on your body.

What Moms Need to Know About Summer Nutrition for Kids (Family Features) With summer in full force, kids are busy with physical activities and whether it’s little league baseball games, swim team or summer camp, they’re more active than ever. Moms, nutritionists and pediatricians alike know active kids and developing bones and muscles need essential nutrients to grow strong, but The Dietary Guidelines for Americans say most Americans, including children, actually aren’t getting enough fiber, calcium, vitamin D and potassium in their diets. Moms can keep up by making sure kids fuel their bodies with proper nutrition and stay hydrated at the same time. As a drink kids already love the taste of, milk is a great choice when moms want to serve delicious and natural, high-quality protein for kids before sending them off on summer adventures. Many are also surprised to learn that milk can help hydrate after exercise due to its natural electrolytes and fluids. Milk plays an important role for kids’ meals and snacks, providing three of the four nutrients most Americans, including kids, aren’t getting enough of (calcium, vitamin D and potassium), and it’s the top food source of these nutrients, to boot.1 Plus, with 8 grams of protein per every 8-ounce glass, the farmfresh beverage is a great way to help the whole family kick start the day. One way to hit a home run for your kids is by stepping up to the breakfast plate with delicious baseball pancakes. Served with an 8-ounce glass of milk, this breakfast is the perfect combo to help kids fuel up with protein in the morning. Find more nutritious recipes to pair with milk at

EVENT OF THE WEEK

UNCF SALUTES CHICAGO FOOTBALL CLASSIC CO-FOUNDERS CHICAGO – The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) will salute the co-founders of the Chicago Football Classic – Larry Huggins and brothers Timothy J. Rand and Everett Rand – at the 2017 UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala – Chicago. The event will be held Saturday, June 17, at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker Drive. “The Chicago Football Classic is an institution in our community and, now, in its 20th year, we want to celebrate the co-founders, each of whom is accomplished in his own right, as our “A Mind Is…” Gala Community Award honorees,” said Lisa Rollins, UNCF regional director, Workplace Initiatives. Everything you wanted to know about writer’s rights (but were afraid to ask) Beginning and professional writers alike may encounter a landmine of legal rights challenges, and the famous are not exempted. Margaret Mitchell’s estate sued novelist Alice Randall for her Gone With the Wind parody, The Wind Done Gone. A Mississippi domestic named Ablene Cooper sued Kathryn Stockett for appropriating her life story in The Help. Writer Patrick White claimed a hip hop mogul plagiarized his work in Jay Z’s book, Decoded. Literary artists from Helen Keller to Harper Lee have sued or been sued for copyright infringement, plagiarism, defamation and a host of other legal issues. What constitutes plagiarism? Can a “homemade copyright” protect your intellectual property? Is the disclaimer “names have been changed to protect the innocent” adequate defense in a defamation case? FLOW Writers (For Love of Writing) and Lawyers for the Creative Arts (LCA) address these issues and more in “Writers, Know Your Legal Rights! (Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask)” from 1-5 pm on Saturday, June 17th at the Beverly Area Planning Association, 11109 S. Longwood Drive. Participants will hear from legal experts and a panel of writers, including novelist Alice Randall, who will discuss her famous copyright infringement lawsuit by video chat.
