briefly EDUCATION CHICAGO CONFERENCE TO INVOLVE ADULTS IN PREVENTING BULLYING IN SCHOOLS A new initiative by a Chicago group seeks to involve adults in combating bullying in schools, in order to curb violence among youths. The initiative will be discussed at the 2017 Chicago Bullying Conference at the National Louis University on October 13th from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Hosted by the Bullying Prevention and Awareness 365 and the university, the conference is expected to attract approximately 250 renowned educators, paraprofessionals, authors, parents and anti-bullying activists from various parts of the country. HEALTH FDA Sets Inaugural Meeting of First-Ever Patient Engagement Advisory Committee For the first time, an FDA advisory committee will focus on patient-related issues. On Oct. 11-12, 2017, FDA will hold the inaugural meeting of the new Patient Engagement Advisory Committee (PEAC). The topic will be the challenges of clinical trial design, conduct, and reporting identified by patients. FDA chose this subject because patients often have concerns about participating in clinical trials or drop out once they have enrolled in a trial. Inconsistent or minimal participation in clinical trials can make it difficult to reach reliable conclusions or to determine the level of benefit for patients. It also can take longer to bring technological advances to the patients who need them.

news HONORING OFFICER TIMOTHY JONES AS HE UNDERGOES REHAB

Continued from Page 1 By Christopher Shuttlesworth

Police Officer Timothy Jones is a 25-yearold man whose commitment to serving the Park Forest community led him to meet the needs of several residents. But it all came to a halt when Jones was shot multiple times by an armed suspect in March 2016. Deputy Chief Mannino said Jones is an incredibly dynamic, outgoing and friendly person. One of Jones’ heart filled moments was back in December 2015, when he stopped and created a video in the Park Forest police station to thank everyone who participated in the “No Shave November” competition, which raised money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although Jones received hundreds of votes to become the winner of the competition, he never mentioned himself in the video because he was always focused on honoring others. Unfortunately, on March 19, 2016, Jones was shot in the head and chest while tackling an armed suspect, who reportedly fled a burglarized house, according to Park Forest’s Discover Magazine. Paramedics from the Park Forest Fire Department rushed Jones to Advocate Christ Medical Center where friends, family and fellow officers stayed to comfort Jones. Mannino explained that Jones responded to the burglary call in a vacant residence and the officers on sight told the suspect to surrender but instead the suspect jumped out of a

window. When Jones tried to tackle him, he was ultimately shot by the armed suspect. “It was a very dark period and everyone was upset and shocked,” Mannino said. “But Jones showed resilience and was able to pull through. The initial pain and shock turned into hope and his family kept fighting along beside him.” An estimated 500 people wrote well wishes to Jones on one of several poster boards in St. Irenaeus Church. Also, a GoFundMe page was created for Jones, and brought in $16,000 in just 24 hours to help cover his medical expenses, according to Park Forest’s Discover Magazine. Jones is currently recovering in a rehabilitation facility and the Park Forest Police Department has decided to form the Officer Timothy Jones Scholarship with a minimum of $500 being given to a Park Forest youth who will major in Criminal Justice at their desired college or university. The senior student must have at least a 2.75 grade point average (G.P.A.) and have no significant misconduct with the law. “We really wanted to support and give back to the community because we see a lot of support surrounding Jones and his injury,” Mannino said. “So, we wanted to create the scholarship in his honor.” Jones is also expected to be honored at an Inaugural First Responders Street Dance on August 12, 2017 at Park Forest American Legion, located at 1631 S. Western Avenue. For more information, visit http://www. villageofparkforest.com/index.aspx?nid=670.

ARE YOU WASTING MONEY COOLING AN EMPTY HOME? CHICAGO - Amid the hottest time of the year, consumer advocates joined with Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently to make Chicago-area consumers aware that cooling an empty home, while they are away at work or on vacation, can cause summer energy bills to soar. Smart thermostats provide the easy solution to high seasonal bills, and this summer, northern Illinois consumers can take advantage of unprecedented rebates as part of one of the largest thermostat rebate programs in the country. The “One Million Smart Thermostats” initiative, launched in October 2015, is a partnership between the utilities and the advocacy groups Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC) and Citizens Utility Board (CUB). Under this initiative smart thermostats are eligible for up to $150 in rebates offered by ComEd and other Illinois gas utilities for customers with WiFi, central air and a furnace. The rebates can help cut the cost of some of these smart devices by more than 50 percent, and give more control to northern Illinois consumers to save money by reducing

wasteful energy use. The goal of the program this year is to double the adoption to 100,000 smart thermostats in households across Illinois. To help create awareness and boost adoption, ComEd has launched an educational campaign and a new instant discount option for customers. “ComEd’s smart thermostat rebate initiative is one of the largest and most active programs in the nation, reducing up-front costs for our customers on a product that gives them more control and even greater savings over time. With just a few taps on a smart thermostat app, customers can manage their household temperature while away from home avoiding unnecessary energy use and costs,” said ComEd President & CEO Anne Pramaggiore. Smart thermostats are WiFi-enabled devices that allow residents to easily control the heating and air conditioning settings through their smartphones, tablets, and computers. The technology is smart because it learns or adapts to user

CAROLE CHENEY ANNOUNCES CONGRESSMAN BILL FOSTER ENDORSEMENT

Foster endorsement marked Cheney as the only Democratic candidate to be endorsed by a member of the Illinois Congressional Delegation Carole Cheney, a leading Democratic candidate for the Illinois 6th Congressional District, announced on July 24, 2017, that she has received the endorsement of Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11). Cheney is currently the only primary candidate to be endorsed by a sitting member of the Illinois Congressional Delegation. “Carole Cheney is up to the task of leading the way for Illinois’ 6th District,” said Congressman Bill Foster. “She is a fighter and a tireless advocate who will always prioritize her constituents first. “Carole is a success story. Nothing in life was handed to her. She had to work hard to open the doors of opportunity. She understands the struggles and obstacles people are facing because she’s faced them too. Carole is uniquely prepared to join me in Congress. “I asked Carole to join my team and to help serve the constituents in my district. She worked tirelessly to listen to their concerns, identify problems, and offer lasting solutions. She’s delivered again and again. “There isn’t another candidate in the field prepared like Carole Cheney. Without question, she is up to the task.” “When it comes to decision making, Congressman Foster always focuses on the interests of his constituents, not special interests,” said Carole Cheney. “It is this focus on constituents that is lacking in our representation in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District. Instead of being accessible and hearing the concerns of our community, Congressman Roskam has closed his door -- putting party before the people he should be serving. “I will fight for the people of the 6th District, and put the needs of the community before the wants of DC special interests. My office will always have an open door, and the concerns of constituents will take top priority, rather than the political gamesmanship that is the central focus of the current representative.” Carole Cheney served as District Chief of Staff to Illinois’ 11th District from 2013 until 2017. During that time, she focused on delivering for the residents of the district – from making sure seniors received help in navigating the social security system, to helping return millions of tax dollars back to the district so that it could be reinvested into the community, and ensuring that the congressional doors would always be open so constituents could voice their concerns and be heard.

behavior over time and can generate energy savings with very little effort. Residents remain comfortable when home and save money on heating and cooling energy costs while away at work or on vacation. “Smart thermostats do the work for you – they adjust the temperature automatically when you’re not home,” said Rob Kelter, senior attorney for ELPC. “We want even more customers to take advantage of the great technological innovation of smart thermostats and keep more money in their pockets.” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said smart thermostats can help consumers cut their cooling costs by an estimated 10 to 20 percent. “Smart thermostats prove just how easy and effective energy efficiency can be,” Kolata said. “The savings from these easy-to-use devices could be substantial—potentially cutting northern Illinois electric bills by millions of dollars. We urge ComEd customers to take advantage of the unprecedented discounts - available online and in stores- to buy a smart thermostat this summer.” “The best way for consumers to control their electric

bills, and help the environment, is to reduce consumption,” said Brien J. Sheahan, Chairman of the ICC. “Smart thermostats give consumers greater control of, and visibility into, their energy use which promotes conservation and helps save money.” To make it easier for customers to redeem rebates, ComEd launched a new website, ComEdMarketplace.com, where customers can shop for smart thermostats and other top-rated energy products and take advantage of online instant rebates that reduce purchase costs. ComEd officials said the smart thermostat program is part of one of the nation’s best-performing energy efficiency programs, saving consumers some $2.5 billion. The ComEd Energy Efficiency Program is about to get even better, thanks to the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA), a bipartisan bill that passed the Illinois General Assembly late in 2016 and was signed into law by Gov. Bruce Rauner. In June, ComEd filed with the ICC a new Energy Efficiency Program, under FEJA. The law will double customer savings and reduce electricity use in Illinois by 21 percent by 2030.

Illinois celebrates 27th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), along with several other state agencies and councils, hosted a celebratory event to honor the 27th anniversary of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at the James R. Thompson Center. The interactive and informative event included an art exhibit, entertainment by performers with disabilities, ADA informational workshops, and exhibits from federal, state, and local organizations. “At IDHS we are committed to a simple motto that many know well, ‘treating people the way we wish to be treated.’ On July 20th we commemorate and celebrate a living doctrine that does just that,” said IDHS Secretary James Dimas. “The Americans with Disabilities Act has been empowering individuals with disabilities to be treated the way we all wish to be treated by enabling them to reach their employment, education, and independent living goals for 27 years. Please join me in celebrating this landmark legislation.” The ADA celebration included presentations from IDHS Division of Rehabilitation Services Director Quinetta Wade and Illinois Tollway Authority Director Greg Bedalov. ADA informational workshops informed job seekers and employers about the benefits of the ADA, and entertainers with disabilities performed for those in attendance. The entire event was free, accessible and opened to the public. To further encourage all Illinoisans to reaffirm the principles of equality and inclusion, Governor Bruce Rauner proclaimed July 20, 2017 the Americans with Disabilities Act Day.

DEDICATED TO GROWTH

In life, there are things that we must work for and there are things that we must wait for. Either way, we can still give ourselves a greater degree of personalized service if we begin each day with dedication. When we begin the day with dedication, we are better positioned to end the day with satisfaction. It is, however, important to know how you will direct your dedication and it what areas you will take action. Dedication to the daily improvement of self precedes a future filled with greater possibilities. When we are dedicated to learning and being better in the simple things like having a better walk in faith or being a better parent, a better spouse, a better friend, a better employee, a better business partner, a better person, etc. our dedication facilitates and supports our growth. Dedication helps us grow and when we grow, we expand our vision, we attract more options, we open more opportunities, and we optimize our potential. We must remember that the law of increase is subjective; the soil will willingly accept the seed and do its part to help the seed transform into a plant; it does not however determine if it is making a tomato or potato. No matter where you find yourself planted, it is your dedication to remain true to the potential of what you can become that determines what youwill produce. New things are usually difficult before they become easy and too often our difficulties become a deterrent that prevents us from becoming better. Every worthwhile experience of growth and achievement requires dedication and determination. The people who grow the most are the ones who most consistently practice and prepare to grow day after day. Address: 11901 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 Phone: (773) 568-2282 www.cutemple.org

nce it is determined that the policy will lapse prematurely, you have a number of options. • You may choose to increase the premiums enough to prevent the anticipated lapse and maintain the original face amount. Before doing so, you would need to request that the carrier send you an in-force Henry Benjamin illustration projecting what the higher premium payments would be, assuming that the current market conditions and interest rates remain stable. However, this may not be your best choice because there is no protection against additional premium increases. Also, insurers now offer better performing insurance products than the original policy, which have guaranteed no-lapse features. • If policy design permits, you may keep paying the current premiums but reduce the death benefit enough so that the policy will not lapse. The problem here is that you may want to maintain the original face amount

(death benefit) because it fits your family’s needs. Therefore, you may need to buy additional life insurance through a second policy and there is no guarantee that you may not be forced to again lower the face amount on the original policy. • You may elect to buy new life insurance that might be a better deal for you. There are new universal life products available with guaranteed no-lapse features and shortened, level pay options. For example, you could purchase a policy designed with the following features: • Death Benefit guaranteed to 120 years of age. • Premiums guaranteed to be level and not to increase. • Pay for only 20 years - after 20 years premiums drop to zero. Be careful not to surrender the old policy until the new policy is in place. Remember, as with your investment portfolio, there are no shortcuts to this evaluation and a professional life insurance broker should be consulted to analyze your

life insurance policy performance and make recommendations when necessary. Are you aware that as you get older, the actual cost of insurance increases each year and if a policy is underfunded the cost of insurance will begin to cannibalize the cash value of the policy? As a result, it is possible that a universal life policy can run out of cash-value and lapse without benefit, unless the policyholder pays additional premiums into the policy. I will leave you with this question. Your agent gets the same annual statement that you do; has he called you? Events DC Teams Up with Nationally-Acclaimed Visual Artist Naturel for Beautification of Skate Park at RFK Stadium WASHINGTON -- Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, is teaming up with nationallyrecognized visual artist Naturel to renovate its Skate Park at RFK Stadium (formerly known as Maloof Skate Park). Due to the renovation, the Skate Park is currently closed now through August 11. The six-week beautification project seeks to increase the visibility and value of the Skate Park at RFK Stadium for public use and event space. It is the third project of several RFK Stadium Campus improvements including a bike-friendly extension of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, installation of the 19th Street batting cages, and a temporary outdoor pole vault training facility (Skate Park-adjacent) that “At Events DC, we actively look for opportunities to revitalize our venues in ways that bring energy, activity, and beauty and continued relevance to neighborhoods,” said Erik A. Moses, senior vice president and managing director of sports, entertainment, and special events at Events DC. “Public art is an ever-present, growing trend in both the District and in cities across the world. We’re thrilled to be working with Naturel and his team in creating a more compelling landscape for our Skate Park visitors.” Lawrence “Naturel” Atoigue is a Maryland-native whose futuristic work—a blend of pop and cubism with a surrealist twist—quickly emerged in today’s contemporary art scene. With a massive social media following, Naturel’s talents have also attracted the eyes and ears of celebrity clients such as Jay-Z, Spike Lee, Paul Rosenberg, and LeBron James, among many others. He has also served as a Creative Collaborator for global campaigns like Fiat and Puma, as well as multi-national brands like Pepsi and the National Basketball Association. Upon project completion, the Skate Park at RFK Stadium will culminate with a community unveiling event in August; details to be announced. The 15,000 square foot Skate Park at RFK Stadium opened for public use in April 2012. Its features, designed by California Skateparks and Professional Skater Geoff Rowley, were inspired by DC’s Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue and includes replicas of the Freedom Plaza Golden Rail and ledges. Located by DC’s Metro Center metro rail station, the Golden Rail was made famous by local skate boarders.
