Grapefruit Juice and Some Drugs Don’t Mix Grapefruit juice and the actual grapefruit can be part of a healthy diet. Grapefruit has vitamin C and potassium— nutrients your body needs to work properly. But it isn’t good for you when it affects the way your medicines work, especially if you have high blood pressure or arrhythmia (irregular or abnormal heart beat). This food and drug interaction can be a concern, says Shiew Mei Huang, PhD, of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has required that some prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs taken by mouth include warnings against drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking the drug, Huang says.
LAW & POLITICS
Tentative Victory In Fight to End Money Bond & Pretrial Detention The Chicago Community Bond Fund welcomes Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans’ new rule that, if implemented, will significantly decrease the use of money bond and significantly reduce the number of people incarcerated pretrial at Cook County Jail. This tentative victory is the result of pressure from a nationwide, grassroots movements for bond reform, as well as a lawsuit charging that Cook County’s money bail system is unconstitutional. “While we celebrate this hard-fought win, we recognize that our movements must stay vigilant to ensure the new rule is fully enforced and no one is incarcerated because they are too poor to pay bond,” said Matthew McLoughlin, Co-founder of the Chicago Community Bond Fund. The new rule, General Administrative Order 2017-05, instructs judges to do three things: 1. Find out how much, if anything, someone accused of a crime could pay for bond; 2. Set bond only in that amount or less; and 3. Review all cases in which someone hasn’t posted bond within seven days. At the same time, the rule does not expand the powers of courts to hold people pretrial, distinguishing it from pieces of legislation proposed this session in Springfield.

news ENTREPRENEURS GET OFF TO A GOOD START WITH BENEFITS CHICAGO
By Christopher Shuttlesworth
Building a business can be tough especially if you don’t have the capital to get started or to funds to make it grow. That’s where entities like Benefits Chicago come in. Benefits Chicago helps small businesses and non-profit organizations obtain loans through partnerships with the MacArthur Foundation, the Chicago Community Trust and the Calvin Foundation. The organization can lend businesses loans from $500,000 to $100 million. Will Towns, who is the Executive Director for Benefits Chicago, said all applicants must have at least three years of business experience and must be able to elaborate on what kind of an impact their businesses will have on the communities they serve. What Benefits Chicago looks for from applicants is whether the business will create jobs, sustain economic growth and provide needed services within their communities. “We look to work with them to provide them [wth] the capital they need to grow their business,” Towns said, adding, Chicago Benefits recently loaned $500,000 to Sweet Beginnings, a local organization that sells honey-based products in the North Lawndale community. Sweet Beginnings plans to hire more than 300 North Lawndale residents over the next five years. Towns said if Benefits Chicago isn’t a good fit for a particular small business, the organization has a program called the Navigator, which can connect business owners to other
services that may be helpful towards securing, financing. They can also use those resources to learn more about expanding their business, he said. Meghan Harte, Executive Director for Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), said the national non-for-profit organization also supports communities in collecting resources for projects and improving neighborhoods with loans ranging from $1,000 to $5 million. “Most of the people in a community need to improve their economic situation,” Harte said. “In some cases, there are small business owners in neighborhoods that want to improve, start or expand the business that they have and that’s when we try to provide support.” Some of the loan programs that LISC offers include the Impact Lending Program that helps provide loans ranging from $1,000 to $1 million. The Community Advantage Loans range from $50,000 to $250,000 and the 504 Real Estate Loans can range from $400,000 to $5 million. “LISC Small Business initiative also helps small businesses obtain more customers, expand their stores or transition from being an entrepreneur to obtaining a building,” said Harte. LISC, along with a certified development company, can finance 90% of real estate acquisition and capital improvement costs. Properties must be multi-purpose structures, be 51% borrower-occupied, and located in a lowincome community, she said. To apply for small business loans, visit Benefits Chicago at http://www.benefitchi.org/ or LISC’s website at http://www.lisc-chicago.org/ index.html.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) recently announced that it honored 53 college-bound youth on Friday, July 21. The scholarship winners were selected from nearly 250 applicants from across the state based on academic achievement, community involvement and an essay. “I would like to congratulate the scholarship recipients for their accomplishments,” said DCFS Acting Director BJ Walker. “It’s been said that education is the most powerful tool you can have that can change the world and I agree. Healthy Chicago 2.0 Community Seed Grants Awarded
On July 19, the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC) and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced the community-based organizations receiving this year’s Healthy Chicago 2.0 Seed Grants to reduce health inequities as part of the city’s four-year community health improvement plan. The aim of the funding opportunity is to support catalytic projects that advance the Healthy Chicago 2.0’s vision to improve health for all of Chicago’s residents. “Healthy Chicago 2.0 is a reflection of our city’s values that no matter the neighborhood, children and families deserve good health,” said Mayor Emanuel. “These new community partnerships support that vision and residents in accessing the healthy food, space to enjoy positive activities and healthcare services they need to strengthen their well-being.”
JB Pritzker Tours Unity Parenting and Counseling
Democratic Candidate for Governor JB Pritzker toured Unity Parenting and Counseling recently which is a social service agency focused on foster care and youth homelessness in Chicago. Unity Parenting’s Harmony Village Transitional Living Program was one of the first youth homeless programs on the South Side of Chicago, and has grown to encompass six homeless programs for homeless children, married couples, and young parents with small children. Because of Bruce Rauner’s “manufactured budget crisis,” Pritzker contended in a released statement that Unity lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in state and federal funding. “Unity Parenting and Counseling is an irreplaceable social service agency on the South Side of Chicago,” said JB Pritzker. “The services they provide to homeless children, young parents, and members of the LGBTQ community have saved countless lives,” he said.

EXPERTS SAY COMMISSION CREATED BY THE PRESIDENT IS AN ATTEMPT TO SUPPRESS THE VOTE Continued from Page 1 By Christopher Shuttlesworth
P
resident Donald Trump has created a Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity to investigate his voter fraud theory, but some experts and community leaders are calling it a “nonexistent problem.” The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., who is the founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, said in a July 1 statement, that the commission plans to suppress the African American vote by reducing early voting efforts. Chair of the commission is Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, who has publicly referred to the 1965 Voting Rights Act as “intrusive.” Kansas’ Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who serves as the commission’s vice chairman and de facto head, “has been a key architect behind many of the nation’s anti-voter and anti-immigration policies,” according to brennancenter.org. The commission had requested voting information including party registration and partial Social Security numbers, but twenty states didn’t comply with the request. On July 10, an official from the commission asked states not to give up the information until a judge is able to make a decision on a lawsuit that claims the data request violates privacy laws, ABC News recently reported. Kobach said the commission’s plans to use a technique called Interstate Crosscheck which compares voter registration data across states while ferreting out evidence of double voting. But the program has been controversial from the start and very few actual cases of fraud have been referred for prosecution. Moreover, reports of cases of double voting in multiple states have been mainly attributed to clerical and other errors, according thevotingnews.com.
Jackson said Kobach has claimed that there may be 108 million dead people still on the rolls, many of whom Kobach claims are stillvoting. Edwin Yohnka, who is the Director of Communications for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), said the commission seems determined to find some claim that President Trump won the 2016 popular vote, which may result in voter suppression, he added. Trump lost the 2016 popular vote to Hillary Clinton by 2.9 million voters and has argued that California, New Hampshire and Virginia all participated in his voter fraud claim, according to McClatchy DC Bureau, a political news organization. “There’s just this tendency for some people to believe that the elections must be rigged if they lose or if the results aren’t exactly what they like,” Yohnka said. “I think that leads to a feeling that there are nefarious activities going on, even without any evidence.” In a July 11 press conference, Senator Amy Klobuchar referred to a recent study which found that there has been only 31 percent documentation of voter fraud since 2014. In that same press conference, Senator Dick Durbin said, “this commission is looking for 3 million illegal voters so President Trump’s voter fraud claim can be vindicated. But they’re not going to find it,” Durbin said. “The right to vote is fundamental to America’s democracy, he added. “I can’t believe that there are so many efforts underway to suppress the vote of legal Americans as well as to jeopardize and endanger the sanctity of the voting process,” Durbin continued. “This effort to suppress the vote across America is antithetical to who we are,” he said. According to whitehouse.gov, any member of the public wishing to submit written comments for the commission’s consideration may do so via email at ElectionIntegrityStaff@ovp.eop.gov. Written comments, along with the names and contact information of the individuals who submitted the comments, may be posted on the commission’s website.
“There’s just this tendency for some people to believe that the elections must be rigged if they lose or if the results aren’t exactly what they like,” Yohnka said. “I think that leads to a feeling that there are nefarious activities going on, even without any evidence.”

Party City Builds Out Digital Initiatives ELMSFORD, N.Y. -- Party City recently announced that it has entered into an agreement with Punchbowl, Inc., Framingham, MA, a technology platform leader for online invitations and digital greeting cards, to launch a digital invitation platform that enables Party City customers to make their own online invitations. The platform is now fully functional at PartyCity.com. In conjunction with this agreement, Party City has made a minority investment in Punchbowl. Ryan Vero, Executive Vice President of Party City Holdco Inc. and President of Party City Retail Group, has joined Punchbowl’s Board of Directors. “Our agreement with Punchbowl represents yet another investment as we continue to grow our portfolio of digital assets,” said Party City CEO Jim Harrison. “With this new capability, party givers will have a single source at PartyCity.com to create invitations while ordering their party supplies online.” Party City’s omni-channel strategy is reflected both in its fleet of over 900 retail locations in the United States, as well as through its own website (partycity.com) which receives an average of 400,000 daily visits. “As the leading party goods supplier, Party City is an ideal partner for us,” said Punchbowl CEO Matt Douglas. “We view this as an excellent and logical combination of services with clear benefits for consumers, especially the time-constrained party giver. We also welcome Party City as a new investor who shares our enthusiasm for
online greeting cards and invitations.” The digital invitation platform will enable consumers to make their own online invites using a wide variety of designs, colors, fonts and themes, as well as licensed characters from Disney, Hasbro, Sesame Street and other well-known entertainment properties. Party City and Punchbowl hold the broadest portfolio of licenses, which means invitations and parties can be themed from beginning to end. In addition to personalizing their invitations, party hosts will be able to track RSVPs, add a co-host to each invite, and create message boards to communicate with guests, using a platform that is optimized for mobile devices. Consumers can purchase online invitations on an as-needed basis and the invitations are received by guests free of advertising. This new agreement follows Party City’s earlier announcement in May that it is partnering with investment firm Ampology, of Fort Lee, NJ to develop “Kazzam,” an online marketplace that will bring party hosts together with party services. Through Kazzam, users will be able to choose from a spectrum of vetted service providers for party activities and entertainment, as well as for ordering party supplies. “By adding the Punchbowl capability adjacent to the Kazzam marketplace, we believe that Party City will enjoy the unique competitive position of providing end-to-end party services,” concluded Harrison.
GUEST COLUMN Beware of Universal Life Insurance!
Life Policyholders Unaware of Impending Lapse By Henry Benjamin (This is part 2 of a 3 part series) Two popular types of life insurance sold during the 1990s were universal life and variable universal life. Universal life policies became popular in the over 44-age group because investment returns paid to the policy account, could be applied to help pay the premiums instead of accumulating cash value. The policyholder knowingly sacrificed the savings component of the policy to instead make the premium payments affordable and level, and still have the policy face amount remain constant. However, the ability of a premium to remain constant depends on the investment returns of the policy doing, as well as what was projected when you first bought the policy. The investment strategy of these policies heavily depends upon a continuing bull market and/or high interest rates. With the advent of the bear market and the federal funds interest rate plummeting to a 46-year low of one percent, many universal life policies are badly underperforming. Consider the solvency actions necessary when a stock or mutual fund purchased on margin, takes a nose dive from the purchase price. If you want to keep the stock or mutual fund, you must continuously add money to the account. So too with these insurance policies—unless you increase your premiums, the policy will lapse well short of the planned in-force period. Policy Statements May Contain Alerts of Impending Lapse Many consumers are now receiving statements, which notify them that their policies will lapse much earlier than expected. These financial predictions have been made using the prevailing market conditions and interest rates, assuming no increase in premium payments. Unfortunately, numerous people fail to understand these warnings or do not notice them because they are placed lower on the statement or in footnotes. Request an In-Force Illustration If you own a life insurance policy, do not delay in reviewing the policy’s financial performance. Immediately ask your insurance company for a current in-force illustration. I will be happy to assist you in obtaining an in-force illustration and explain the results. This will show how the policy is expected to perform in the future under current market and/or interest-rate conditions. This, in turn, will let you know if the policy is soon to lapse or if the policy reserves are critically low. AWOP SHARES MARKETPLACE MINISTRY PROCESS WITH CHRISTIAN LEADERS NATIONWIDE At Work on Purpose (AWOP) shared its best practices recently with leaders from across the nation eager to learn how to create marketplace communities in their own hometowns. About 200 Christian leaders from greater Cincinnati and Dayton, with guests from LeTourneau Center for Faith and Work in Dallas; Cru in Sioux Falls, S.D.; Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Ky.; and the Luis Palau Association in Portland, Ore., attended the annual XL Summit held at Grace Chapel in Mason. AWOP is recognized as the nation’s largest city-wide, marketplace ministry, with almost 9,000 members. It was formed in 2003 by a dozen working Christians who had a desire to help greater Cincinnati’s Christians integrate their faith at work by helping people connect where the Holy Spirit leads them. The group originally met in 2003 at Old St. George Catholic Church in Clifton and quickly grew into a large group with a mission to restore the Christian community to the work world and transform one life at a time. “I realized rather quickly that people were hungry for community,” said AWOP founder and president Chuck Proudfit. “People just wanted to be with other Christians so they didn’t feel alone in a secular work world.” AWOP became an “ekklesia” or a community called out to identify felt needs in the community, eliminate poverty and transform lives one at a time. Proudfit joined forces with the Rev. Jeff Greer, pastor at Grace Chapel to form BIZNISTRIES®; faith-based enterprises whose profits fund ministry advancement. AWOP’s emerging network of marketplace ministry initiatives include BIZNISTRIES®;Witheos, which provides co-working space and vocational support for working Christians; Neighbors Embracing

Transformation (NET), which seeks to transform neighborhoods as it cares for the spiritual, relational, motivational and material health of the people; Collaboratories, faith-based business roundtables for working Christians; Marketplace Christians Making Connections (MC2), a community for faith-based networking; and Made to Flourish, a pastor’s network for the common good. Speakers who shared their efforts to serve the community by equipping Christians in the workplace included: Ryan Chapin of General Electric, who founded Living in Faith Together (LIFT) and is author of Go, Make Disciples at Work; Aly Balser and Dave Farris of Cincinnati Christian University; Jamie Noyd of InterVarsity, which provides graduate student ministry at the University of Cincinnati; and the Revs. Rick Shonkwiler of White Oak Christian Church in Cincinnati; Jeff Duerler of Lifespring Church in Harrison; and Randy Ballard of Kings Point Church of God in Maineville. AWOP is based in Blue Ash, Ohio and operates with volunteers and contractors. Its leadership springs from small groups of three or four who tackle a problem by serving the felt needs in a community, said Proudfit. Its organization is modeled on the early Church, where disciples pooled resources to help the community—and virtually eliminated poverty in the process. “AWOP is more of an organism than an organization,” said Proudfit. “Our organization has the look and feel of a molecule. Two or three atoms come together and form a chemical bond. The molecular charge is the Holy Spirit.” Proudfit acknowledged Jeff Welsh of Starbase Consulting for his historical contribution creating AWOP’s first website. Ron Touby, city director of Cru City, and John McCarthy, CEO of AGI Hospitality Recruiting, served as co-masters of ceremonies. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING
You may be in a tight spot right now, however, your breakthrough is closer than you think. We all have those moments when our lives are so filled with confusion that we cannot tell up from down; so beset with pain that we cannot see in from out, and so full of frustration and hopelessness that we cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. Then, we remember to stop and pray. As people of faith, we recognize that prayer is essential. Prayer changes things. It gives us the strength to go forward. Jesus said, “I tell you, whatever you pray for believe that you have received it and it shall be yours.” In prayer, we set the soul like a trap to receive thoughts, guidance, and impulses of God. Prayer helps us adjust and prepare our mind and heart to receive God’s program. Remember, if the Lord put you there, the Lord can bless you there. Like Abram, you sometimes have to leave your country and kindred and head to the place that God will show you. Even in the liminal space God has a plan for your life, a plan for your welfare and not for your harm. His plan is to give you a future with hope. As one writer said, “Those who are committed to being the light must be equally committed to the process of burning.” The good news is that God never leaves you alone. Prayer changes things because prayer changes us. It has been said, “Pray as if everything depended upon God and work as if everything depended upon you.” So, Lift it up and Let it go. Leave it to God. Address: 11901 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 Phone: (773) 568-2282 www.cutemple.org

Donate a backpack, learn about Lincoln
Anyone who donates a sturdy new backpack for Springfield school children in July will get free
admission to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. All backpacks will benefit the students of Springfield Public School District 186. The backpacks should be new and sturdy enough for students to carry books and school supplies. “The ultimate mission of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is education. This exchange is a great way to make school a little easier for students and simultaneously give people yet another reason to come learn about the nation’s greatest president,” said ALPLM Executive Director Alan Lowe. Donors can bring their backpacks to the presidential museum and tour immediately or get a coupon for free admission later this year. Donors can also drop them off and pick up admission coupons at The Real Estate Group, 3701 W. Wabash Ave., Springfield. Backpacks can cost just $10, so donors not only
do a good deed but also save money off the regular admission price of $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $6 for children. Find out more at www.presidentlincoln. illinois.gov. Last year, ALPLM visitors donated more than 1,400 backpacks. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through old-fashioned scholarship and modern technology. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art, as well as some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history. The museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative storytelling techniques to educate visitors.
