he nation is at a breaking point. Less than a month after the slaughter of 49 people in Orlando fueled by hatred and violence, after police shootings and no convictions, after Trayvon Martin, after Sandra Bland, after Sean Bell, Eric Garner, Rakia Boyde, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, Laquan McDonald, shootings of nine black members at a South Carolina church, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, a fourth of July weekend in Chicago where the death toll rose to 82 shot, 14 of them fatally, seven police officers injured in Dallas at press time, five of them dead, and the list goes on and on and on. And still, the violence is not letting up. Where do we go from here America? Do we continue to let the hatred seep into our communities like sap rising up in an unfruitful tree?

50 Years later, community leaders commemorate Dr. King’s 1966 March By Monique Smith

In 1966, after several successes in the South, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., James Bevel, and others in civil rights organizations tried to spread the movement to the North, with Chicago as their first destination. Fifty years later, a large consortium of contemporary activists, faith leaders, community members and several of the original members of the Chicago Freedom Movement marchers will converge in the streets of Marquette Park on August 6th for a two-day event to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s 1966 march through Marquette Park. In this photo, Dr. King meets with President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966.

In 1965, 44 civil rights organizations fighting to end slums and poor living conditions for blacks collectively known as the Chicago Freedom Movement invited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to come to Chicago. Dr. King, the Southern Christian Leadership Council and local leaders like James Bevel and Al Raby used this as an opportunity to shift the agenda of the civil rights movement by addressing the entrenched racial discrimination in urban cities which kept blacks in ghettos, overcrowded schools and low-paying jobs. King’s move into the slums of the North Lawndale community made headlines, shed light and brought national attention to the conditions blacks were living under in the city. 50 years later, the landscape of inequality in housing, jobs and education in Chicago neighborhoods persists.

Where Do We Go From Here? Continued from page 1

Do we watch over and over and over again the same stories ending the same way without solutions? Do we continue to murder our own, fearful and suspicious and consumed with selfhate so much that the emergency rooms can’t hold us all? Do we continue to sit and hear a four-year old girl tell her mother, “Mommy, I ‘m here…” as she watched the horrors of death pass by her eyes too young to comprehend what death is even about? We will see it again if nothing changes because from the beginning this nation was built on violence and abuse, built on a system that profited from racism and hatred and division. How do you change that? How do you change hateful hearts? One man, taken from us too soon said you do it with love. As we go through this breaking point, are we too confused to understand what and who we really are and must we continue to fool ourselves to think that building walls and not relationships will stop it? More hate, less love. Is that really the answer and does more hate even feel or look like the answer? No, love cannot be legislated. It cannot be dictated. It can’t be

ComEd Recruits More Than 250 Chicagoland Students for Summer Internships ComEd launched its annual summer internship program recently, providing local teen students with opportunities to learn more about the energy industry through hands-on job training and career experience. This year, more than 250 Chicagoland-area college and high school students will be assigned to various departments across the company and some will be trained to serve as ComEd youth ambassadors attending local community events, teaching others about energy efficiency and how to take advantage of smart meter technology. “Technology continues to change our world and we need a workforce that will help us meet the challenges of the future. Our summer internship program is an effort to engage the young people in our communities and expose them to career opportunities,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd. ComEd summer internships are paid job opportunities, which are available on the careers section of the company’s website. ComEd also partners with community organizations like After School Matters Youth Ambassador Program to recruit student interns for the summer program. “We are excited about the perspective our interns bring to ComEd,” said Terence R. Donnelly, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, ComEd. “Because they are such great users of technology, they help us see improved opportunities to benefit our customers.” “This program helped me come out of my shell,” said Marlen G., ComEd Youth Ambassador who participated in the program in 2015. “Having people stop to listen to me made me realize my voice matters.” Since its start in 2012, ComEd’s summer internship program has provided workforce training to more than 1,000 students. dished out or mandated or managed. And morality is a matter of choice, but what shall we choose, America? More hate, more violence? It would be foolish to think we can legislate love, but we can do something. Just look at history. History will tell you that we can do something. We can take back our communities, one neighborhood at a time. We can say to ourselves that unless we pick up the broken pieces hold ourselves accountable first, hold the people sworn to protect us accountable, hold the people sworn to represent us accountable, organize like the civil right leaders of yesteryear showed us, we will show ourselves that we can get something done. We may not be able to legislate love, but we can practice love and we can organize ourselves around the principles of love. Organizing around these same principles has worked before and it can work again. When you look at the prospects of being able to organize around love, there are more recent examples from which we can learn. President Barack Obama made history when he became

the first black president, but his campaign was clearly one of the most well-organized operations in American politics. And while we will always disagree, isn’t organizing around something we can agree on, like safer communities, worth it? It is strategically and collectively possible to organize around principles we can agree on and we have learned from history that it can be done. A nation divided and fueled by hate has failed over and over again and it will fail again if things stay the same. So where do we go from here, America? Where do we go from here Chicago, Dallas, South Carolina, New York, Minnesota, Louisiana? And to the people victimized and caught up in this world wind, what will YOU do to change things? Will you just sit and wait until it happens again? The Chicago Citizen Newspaper Group Inc. is holding a panel discussion on violence and race relations in America. Will you join the effort? Will you be a part of the solution? Stay tuned for more details. It’s an important discussion America needs to have.

The Obama Foundation Announces Architect Selection for Future Presidential Center

T

he Obama Foundation recently announced that it has selected the architectural team of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners (TWBTA) and Interactive Design Architects (IDEA) to lead the effort to design the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s mid-South Side. The Center will include a library holding the Presidential archives, a museum focusing on the Obama Presidency and issues of our time, and space for programs and initiatives that advance the Foundation’s public mission. The Obama Foundation issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) on December 21, 2015 to seven architectural firms, who were chosen from more than 140 firms worldwide who had originally submitted qualifications. TWBTA, based in New York, and IDEA, a Chicago firm founded almost twenty-five years ago, will lead a multidisciplinary and wide-ranging design and engineering effort that may ultimately include as many as 15-20 other firms engaged in various specialty areas all crucial to the Center’s design. The Obama Foundation will manage the design and construction of the Center with a project management team that will be named at a later date. “We are thrilled to announce the selection of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners to lead the design team for the Obama Presidential Center, and that they will partner with Interactive Design Architects, with Dina Griffin as its President as they begin this exciting project. Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners stood out in their commitment to exploring, together with the Foundation, the best ways of creating an innovative center for action that inspires communities and individuals to take on our biggest challenges. Interactive Design Architects brings local knowledge and a track record for delivering excellence to large, complex civic projects,” said Martin Nesbitt, chairman of the Obama Foundation. “We were extremely impressed by each of the proposals from the seven firms and thank them for their passion, effort, resources and time throughout this process.” “We are delighted to begin work with Tod Williams

Billie Tsien Architects | Partners and Interactive Design Architects on the design phase of the Obama Presidential Center. Tod and Billie’s past projects display an incredible commitment to scale, craft and materiality, and their proposal

demonstrated an equally genuine commitment to also carefully balance an understanding and respect for the history and potential of the South Side, the Olmstead and Vaux-designed park setting and Chicago’s overall architectural legacy,” said Robbin Cohen, executive director of the Obama Foundation. “Together with these two firms, we look forward to building a Center that is a place for ever-evolving, innovative programming.” “We are deeply moved by the mission of the Obama Foundation and the role the Center can play in empowering that mission. It is a joy, an honor, and a responsibility to create a place that reflects the optimism and integrity of the President and the First Lady. This has been a transformative presidency and we will work to make a Center that embodies and expands the Obamas’ vision. We look forward to collaborating with our partners, Interactive Design Architects, and to working with the South Side community,” said Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners. “It’s a remarkable opportunity to work with the Obama Foundation and to partner with Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners on the design for the Obama Presidential Center. As a native Chicagoan and resident of the South Side, this project is deeply meaningful to me and I could not be more excited. To play a role in a project that will have such a transformative impact on the community and the wider world is a dream come true,” said Dina Griffin, President of Interactive Design Architects. The Obama Foundation is currently considering two sites for the location of the Center, Jackson Park and Washington Park on the South Side. Amtrak offers a new luxury lounge for premium customers By Robert Kingett

Things are hopping at Chicago Union station this morning because of a new opening. The station has opened a new lounge area for customers who are traveling in Sleeping cars or in Business class, as well as Select Plus and Select Executive Amtrak Guest Rewards members. The lounge is meant to be an added bonus to the traveling experience so it has a lot of elegance in aesthetics. The entrance alone is visually inspiring. The primary access is located inside the station between the Great Hall and the Concourse, with a red carpet exterior entrance near the taxi stand on the west side of Canal Street. Customers can enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages in the lounge. For the rail enthusiast, there is a Pennsylvania Room located in the former Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Department space on the upper level. An elevator and staircase connect both floors of the lounge, which meets the latest Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Workers and otherwise who need Wi-Fi won’t have to

worry about coverage because both floors, the lower and upper floor, are equipped for Wi-Fi. Powered furniture, furniture with outlets embedded into the design is among the various tabletops and workstations present, so customers won’t have to worry about planning meetings or checking their email. Amtrak customers who arrive at the lounge can partake in showering and sleeping. It even has a dedicated children’s area for families who are taking a vacation by rail journey. “Not only does this project greatly improve the Amtrak experience for these customers, it also clears the way for changes at the Concourse Level that will improve those boarding areas,” said Mark Murphy, Chicago-based Amtrak Senior Vice President & General Manager, who announced the initiation of the nearly $7 million lounge project at a news conference last fall with federal, state and local officials. “As a Chicago-based company, the Chicago Union Station has always been a historic icon to our employees,”

said Bill Abromitis, Clune Construction CEO. “We were honored to be brought in as the general contractor for this project in the early stages to assist with the design development. It was our goal to work with the Amtrak project team to preserve the history and romance of Union Station while constructing a world-class lounge for a world-class client.” This addition is a significant upgrade that Amtrak has not had in Chicago for quite some time. Since 2010, Amtrak has primarily used its own funds from customer ticket revenue and federal capital grants to make nearly $60 million in investments in the station. In addition to the new Metropolitan Lounge, this work includes the Szabo Control Center, regional offices, reinstituting air conditioning in the Great Hall and surrounding spaces, restoration of the grand staircases and establishment of a service center in the Great Hall, remediation and life-safety and facade repairs (all in the Head house); supplemental heating, refreshing of furniture and carpeting and new door systems leading to and from the concourse and the boarding platforms (all in the Concourse).

Study Reveals a Roadmap to the Top for Black Women Executives

Pictured is the Mott Haven Houses in New York City. More than 10,000 units managed by the city’s housing authority are occupied by residents whose earnings exceed eligibility limits. In one other case, investigators found one family with $6.1 million in assets lived in subsidized housing in Puerto Rico intended for a family earning less than $20,000 a year.

Thousands of Rich Americans Live in Taxpayer-Subsidized Public Housing By Drew Johnson (Urban News Service)

Tens of thousands of high-income Americans live in low-income housing, according to a federal audit. More than 25,000 families inhabit federally subsidized housing, even though their incomes exceed limits for public-housing eligibility, according to a probe by the inspector general for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Critics say these over-income residents cost taxpayers more than $100 million annually and displace disadvantaged citizens who need public housing. In order to be eligible for public housing, a family must satisfy a formula that combines family size, gross family income and the area’s median income. Once families move into public housing, however, authorities often let them stay indefinitely, no matter how high their income grows. As a result, one Manhattan family living in public housing earned $498,000 in 2014 – $431,000 more than the $67,000 income ceiling allowed. The family paid just $1,574 a month for a three-bedroom apartment in the financial district, where equivalent monthly rents exceed $5,000. Like others in HUD’s audit, this family was not named. The report lacks identifying details. HUD has tried to bar high-income residents from low-income housing. Through a rule issued in 2004, it empowered local public housing authorities to write guidelines that would force tenants to move if their incomes surpassed federal eligibility thresholds. Few housing programs, however, enforce such regulations. Among the 15 housing authorities in HUD’s audit, all admitted they still let over-income families stay in subsidized housing. “The bureaucrats in charge of the public housing programs have no incentive to kick people out, once they begin earning too much money to live in housing projects,” said David Williams, the president of the Washington, D.C.-based Taxpayers Protection Alliance. “Taxpayers are left paying millions of dollars to subsidize the housing for people who make hefty, six-figure incomes.” HUD’s audit supports Williams’ perspective. It found that 1,936 families who earned more than $100,000 lived in public housing in 2014. One family in Lake Linden, Michigan, collected

$401,000 in take-home-pay, even though no one earning more than $29,600 was supposed to inhabit its public apartment. A San Francisco family earned $437,000 a year, according to the HUD investigation, but refused to give up its subsidized housing. One family with $6.1 million in assets lived in subsidized housing in Puerto Rico intended for a family earning less than $20,000 a year. This situation is most pronounced in New York City, where 10,250 units managed by the city’s housing authority are occupied by residents whose earnings exceed eligibility limits. Investigators also found that 1,219 over-income residents dwell in subsidized housing in Puerto Rico. Taxpayers spend $104 million a year to subsidize people in federal housing, even though they make too much money, according to investigators. “It is outrageous that taxpayers are footing the bill for millionaires’ housing,” said Rep. Vern Buchanan (R – Florida). “This type of abuse hurts truly needy families.” About 580,000 low-income families currently await vacancies in federal housing, HUD estimates. This frustrates Lilia Cruz, who has lived in a Connecticut housing project for 18 years. “I don’t think it’s fair,” said Cruz, who says she lives on less than $8,000 a year. “It’s ridiculous that those people live in public housing when they can afford to move out and open up a place for someone who really needs a place to live.” Milan Ozdinec disagrees. As HUD’s deputy assistant secretary for public housing and voucher programs, he sees value in letting affluent residents retain their units, even if they shut out needy families. “The existence of over-income families aid [publichousing authorities] in meeting their obligation to deconcentrate poverty and also serve to stabilize neighborhoods, because families working towards selfsufficiency serve as good role models to other tenants,” Ozdinec wrote in a June 2015 letter reacting to the inspector general’s findings. Ozdinec also expressed concern that forcing highincome families to leave public housing could affect their ability to stay employed and disrupt their children’s learning, if they were forced to change schools within academic years.

There is a way for black women executives to increase their numbers in business leadership positions if conscientious and intentional steps are taken to recognize and reward their talents and contributions to business success. A qualitative study conducted by The Executive Leadership Council, the preeminent membership organization for the development of global black leaders, in collaboration with Springboard – Partners in Cross Cultural Leadership, builds on the findings of the groundbreaking research in the Black Women Executives (BWE) Research Initiative in 2008. The current findings, published in the Black Women Executives Research Initiative Revisited, examine the facilitators and impediments to Black Women Executives (BWEs) in reaching the C-Suite. The new findings show that while nearly 27 percent of BWEs received promotions or advanced their positions in the same or a different company during the period, more than 50 percent stayed in the same or similar position, made lateral moves in the same or different company, or lost ground through diminished roles or transitioning out of the corporate workplace entirely. All of which took place during a severe recession, one of the most difficult economic periods in modern history. “The findings of the Black Women Executives Research Initiative Revisited present an insightful perspective on the performance and opportunities for black women executives during a turbulent and challenging period for global business,” said Ronald C. Parker, President and CEO of The Executive Leadership Council. “It shows that although more than a quarter of the respondents advanced their careers under difficult circumstances, there is much more that needs to be done by black women and companies to recognize and reward the underutilized talent of these exceptional leaders.” The interviews with the BWEs identified four factors critical to understanding why BWEs were both successful and challenged during the 2007 – 2015 timeframe. Four areas of opportunity for BWEs to influence positive outcomes were revealed: (1) Alignment of Values; (2) Agility and Repurposement; (3) Sponsor Relationships; and, (4) Relationshipbuilding as Politics. These four areas of focus could create a “roadmap” leading to an increase in the representation of BWEs in corporate C-Suites and on boards. Of the four, the two most important areas suggested by the research were relationship building and agility, and repurposement. “The ‘runway’ is so important,” said Pamela Carlton, president of Springboard - Partners in Cross Cultural Leadership and Co-Founder of The Everest Project, which explored contributions of multicultural women to business success. “It is clear that BWEs must start early in their careers, in the first 5 – 7 years, to develop strategic multiple relationships with the people who can support and advance their careers. The most successful BWEs take risks and have the opportunity for big roles early in their careers, allowing them to build the long runway of leadership experiences all executives need, build alliances and create a track record of success,” Carlton added. Details on the findings are available in an Executive Summary available on The ELC’s website at www.elcinfo.com. Two areas of particular interest are “Sponsorship: Who’s in Your Wallet,” and “Relationship-building as Politics.” Both speak to the importance of BWEs building and nurturing a network of allies, in addition to sponsors, in a very competitive environment where everyone performs at a high level, demonstrates agility and an alignment with the values and mission of the enterprise, and is willing to take risks with so-called “glass cliff” assignments. The study found that BWEs are willing to take on daunting assignments, but frequently are not recognized with promotions for successfully achieving or exceeding favorable outcomes. “This is the kind of research that helps us develop the necessary leadership development programs, strategies, and research that will help BWEs navigate the corporate landscape and find a path to the top,” said Steven Williams, Ph.D., SHRMSCP, SPHR, Vice President & Chief Learning Officer of The ELC’s Institute for Leadership Development & Research. “The findings of this research will help guide our efforts to develop a pathway to success for BWEs that we believe will contribute to more positive results.” The findings from the Black Women Executives Research Initiative Revisited also contributed to a larger study of multicultural women as part of The Everest Project, which examined the influence of women’s leadership in today’s global economy and provided insight into how the intersection of gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and sexual orientation impacts women in the workplace. The study titled Eve of Change: Women Redefining Corporate America involved participants who identified as Black, Hispanic, LGBTQ, Pan Asian or White and represented over eighty Fortune 500 corporations from a range of different industries and regions. It found that female executives are leading transformation and “making their mark by creating the capacity of teams to innovate, a phenomenon that will fuel corporate growth well into the future,” Carlton underscored. The issue of women in corporate leadership and on corporate boards has been explored and discussed in a number of studies and blogs, including a GAO Report on women on corporate boards, a study of women leaders from Capitol Hill to the board room in Barriers and Bias: The Status of Women in Leadership by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), The ELC Institute and a blog exploring the nuances of a blended masculine-feminine style of leadership contributing to business success. Trends are leaning towards increasing the representation of women in corporate leadership and women of color have the most ground to make up to reach parity.

Tips to Create the Perfect Picnic

(StatePoint) A picnic is a fantastic way to gath er with friends and family. Enjoy a summer breeze on the beach or host a back yard soiree — you can make your al fresco meal as casual or as elegant as you’d like. Pack the best basket with these simple tips. Find the Right Location The first step to a successful picnic is finding the perfect spot. If you decide not to host at your home, choose a space at the park or beach with tables or a shelter to make setup a snap. If you select a location without amenities, you’ll need to bring chairs and blankets to provide a comfortable setting for guests. Determine how many people will be in attendance, and plan accordingly.

Coordinate the Menu Take time to create a delicious, simple and convenient menu. Choose items that are easy to eat and fare well in warm weather, avoiding foods that melt or spoil. When you’re ready to prepare your dish es, a highperformance blender, such as the Vitamix S50, is a musthave kitchen appliance to reduce prep time and cleanup, while releasing the full flavor of whole foods. Effortlessly chop and blend ingredients to make a variety of picnic friendly dishes and snacks, such as hum mus, nut butters, vinaigrettes and gra nola. And you can blend right in the small, doublewall insulated container that can go into your cooler and directly to your picnic location. Consider healthy recipes that require little prep work but are sure to please. Blend peanuts and cashews for a mixed nut butter that’s perfect for kids’ sandwiches or as a dip for apple slices and celery sticks. For the ideal blend of sweet and spicy, chop apples and jalapeno peppers to make a Crunchy Apple Salsa. You can also create a nutri tious guacamole appetizer by mixing avo cados, tomatoes, cilantro and lemon juice. By selecting dishes that can be quickly and easily prepared before your picnic, you’ll find yourself with even more time to enjoy your guests. Smart Packing Make packing for your picnic a breeze by creating a checklist with necessary items, such as plates, cups, utensils, napkins and more. Be sure to count your guests and bring enough for everyone, remem bering extras for dessert. Strategically pack your basket and cooler to avoid smashing, breaking or spoiling food. Secure heavier items on the bottom and insert smaller, lighter items on top. In the cooler, place chunks of ice or frozen packs in between layers to prevent items from shifting while keeping contents fresh. As a rule of thumb, once the ice melts, perishable food has likely reached an unsafe temperate and should not be consumed. Plan and prepare items ahead of time, and you will be ready to host a splendid picnic in the great out doors. So gather your friends and family, grab a blanket, and let the fun begin! PHOTO SOURCE: PHOTO CAPTION: Highperformance blenders are ideal for creating healthy, onthego recipes.
