Africa Viewed As Growth Target for Telecom By Monique Smith

ccording to reports published by the Schott Foundation for Public Education in 2013, only 26.5% of black males graduated high school compared to 86.2% of their white male counterparts. Reports of young black males being gunned down either by police or who kill one another consistently appear in local and national headlines. Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore recognized the need to change that imagery. He recently honored Darius J. Johnson, a young man from the Chatham neighborhood, who has shown himself to be a ray of light in these dark times.

When it comes to telecommunications, experts agree that Africa is the new “it” continent for growth. “International investors from the enterprise cloud, hosting and data center spaces, are targeting the African fixed infrastructure market and will compete with mobile tower infrastructure providers in the coming years,” predicted one telecom banker, who was attending a finance and investment conference in London this month. “ To expand into Africa, Artilium has partnered with Virginiabased Tritente Global Energy to launch ArtiliumAfrica. 1 Durbin: We Need A Forceful Response To The Heroin And Opioid Epidemic WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (DIL) recently spoke on the Senate floor calling out Republicans for failing to provide immediate funding for new efforts to combat opioid addiction in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act. Durbin noted that the CARA bill freezes funding for addiction treatment at a time when the number of deaths from opioid and heroin overdoses continues to grow. “When only 12% of the people in Illinois are able to receive care for their addiction and there is a 12-week wait at facilities for vulnerable patients to get into drug treatment, authorizing new programs, which this bill does, is good but not good enough. We need to make an investment. We need to put taxpayers’ dollars behind this commitment to end this epidemic, and it’s needed now,” said Durbin.“Failing to provide the dollars today is not going to help

those who are currently suffering. It’s not going to help that mother who was awake all last night worrying about a son or a daughter who is facing an addiction, praying they can get that child they love into treatment in time to break that addiction and save their lives.” Last month, Senator Durbin introduced comprehensive legislation to prevent prescription

opioid addiction, as four out of five heroin users started by misusing prescription opioids. The Addiction Prevention and Responsible Opioid Practices Act (A-PROP Act) would curb the number of opioids flooding the market, increase accountability to ensure responsible prescribing practices, and support prevention efforts to reduce drug diversion and addiction.

Johnson is a recent graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia where he majored in English with a minor in Journalism. Johnson is now on his way to complete his graduate studies at the prestigious Columbia University in New York where President Barack Obama is one of their most notable alums. Johnson was born into circumstances that were meant to dictate his demise and could have surely made him another statistic. When he was just 5-weeks-old, his mother was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. “Growing up in Chicago was rough, but it wasn’t horrible,” said Johnson. Johnson was raised by his grandparents who kept a watchful eye on him throughout the years. “My grandparents were my protectors, they were always watching me,” he said. “If I went outside to play, they were right there on the

porch watching. I attended Burnside Elementary on 91st Place and we lived on 89th Street, but they took me and picked me up from school every day.” Johnson also recalls his time as a part of the South Shore Drill Team and how that experience really helped him to excel along the way. “Being a part of the South Shore Drill Team was a great experience for me, it taught me discipline and made me more of an extrovert,” he said. Johnson interned with Perfect Pitch Media Group in Atlanta. His boss, Tenisha Bell, also from Chicago lost her dad to gun violence too when she was 5-years old. Bell called Morehouse College looking for a star student to intern at her firm and they recommended Johnson. “Darius is a superstar; his work ethic is impeccable. In a disheartening time in our society where black boys

are being discounted, hunted by cops and by each other, Darius should be celebrated,” said Bell. With Bell’s help, Johnson received an internship at CNN news network and was later offered a summer freelance role with the network. Johnson remarked that his grandparents are very proud of him, but didn’t want him to attend Columbia in the fall. “They were against me going because of the money, I received acceptance letters and a scholarship from another school, but no money for Columbia; but it’s Columbia!,” he said. “That’s not an opportunity I can pass up.” A person who’s beating the odds, Johnson continues to press on in spite of the hardships he’s facing. He plans on working to pay his way through school and has set up a GoFundMe page. For people who want to support him; the page can be found at https:// www. gofundme.com/2rew5fyk.

$1.1 Million Grant

N

orth Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) School of Education has been awarded $1.1 million from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to create training programs to develop a more diverse field of topquality education researchers. NCCU is among four minorityserving universities across the nation awarded grants under the newly formed IES Pathways to the Education Sciences Research Training Program. The Pathways program was launched in 2015 to increase the number of students who are prepared to pursue doctoral study in the education sciences, including members of racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, the economically disadvantaged, veterans, and those with disabilities. “Pathways to Education Sciences provides an excellent opportunity and gateway for students enrolled at North Carolina Central University to pursue doctoral program in education research,” said Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye, NCCU provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Its goals fit well within our mission of expanding opportunity for a diverse population of students in higher education and enhancing NCCU’s ability to engage and create an innovative learning experience for all students.” The award will allow NCCU to partner with Duke University and University of North Carolina Wilmington to launch the Research Institute for Scholars of Equity (RISE), a program

that will enroll approximately 60 upperlevel undergraduate students to focus on inequities in American education, especially those affecting African-American and Hispanic students. “North Carolina Central University’s School of Education is elated to be a part of this project,” said Dr. Audrey W. Beard, interim dean of the NCCU School of Education. “The grant will enable us to respond to diversity needs that are critical to the academic success of so many students, while also preparing NCCU education majors for academic and career advancement.” As part of the year-long training program, participants will receive education research training, conduct research with peers and faculty mentors, as well as receive assistance in career development and applying to doctoral programs. An eight-week summer research institute is also part of the initiative. “The goal of the Pathways training program is to create a pipeline of education researchers who will bring new ideas and fresh perspectives to the field,” said Thomas Brock, Commissioner of the National Center for Education Research, the IES center that administers the Pathways program. “This is particularly important given the need for trustworthy, reliable evidence to help our nation’s schools improve. We look forward to learning from this first set of grantees and continuing to support efforts to diversify and strengthen the education sciences.”

OneUnited Bank Launches the National #BankBlack Challenge to Demonstrate Black Economic Power

O

neUnited Bank, the largest Black owned bank in America and the first Black internet bank, is launching the national #BankBlack Challenge, designed to harness the economic power of the Black community focused on one clear financial message that #BlackMoneyMatters. The challenge: Participate in the #BankBlack Challenge by opening a OneUnited Bank $100 UNITY Savings account online from anywhere in America atwww.oneunited.com/bankblackchallenge and challenging 20 friends to the same. In recent weeks America’s Black community has galvanized via social media, Black media and word of mouth, answering the call for a show of economic force by moving their money from traditional banks to black owned banks, like OneUnited Bank. The #BankBlack movement intensified on July 8th, 2016 when Rapper Killer Mike implored the Black community to deploy “a portion” of its financial resources to make a tangible difference during a town hall meeting on BET and MTV. Other celebrities such as Solange, Jessie Williams, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Queen Latifah, and more have joined the conversation urging Black Americans to move their money to Blackowned banks. Since then, OneUnited has seen a sharp influx in web

traffic and new accounts, with over $3 million deposited since this call to action. “If 1 million people opened a $100 savings account in a Black owned bank, we would move

$100 million! That’s real economic power”, states Teri Williams, President & COO of OneUnited Bank. “It is critical for the Black community to utilize our $1.2 trillion in annual spending power to create jobs and build wealth in our community.” OneUnited is uniquely positioned to lead this Black financial empowerment movement to intelligently invest in the Black community and create generational wealth. Banking with black owned banks results in better circulation of Black dollars, creates more jobs for the Black community, provides mortgage and small business loans for Black borrowers, educates the urban community on financial literacy, and harnesses the power of the black dollar. For over two decades, OneUnited Bank, with locations in Los Angeles, Miami and Boston and its ability to open accounts online nationwide, has been steeped in the financial literacy movement. Studies show black dollars leave the Black community after 6 hours as compared to 28 days in the Asian American community. OneUnited Bank is encouraging the Black community to move their money and extend the life of the black dollar. To participate in the #BankBlack Challenge from anywhere in America go to www. oneunited.com/bankblackchallenge, open a $100 new savings account and challenge 20 friends to do the same.

t was entirely fitting that the 21st International AIDS Conference kicked off recently in Durban, South Africa, on “Mandela Day,” a global celebration of the great man’s birthday. Sixteen years ago, the 13th International AIDS Conference was also held in Durban—the first time in a developing country. The event forced the world to turn its focus to Africa, where the disease had transformed wide swaths of

AIDS treatment. I’m humbled to stand before you continuing my grandfather’s legacy in my small way,” he said, using the isiXhosa term of endearment Madiba, or father, that many South Africans use when speaking of the senior Mandela. The epidemic is now strikingly different from that first Durban conference. In 2000, though antiviral drugs (ARVs) had turned the disease from a death sentence to a manageable illness in Western countries, most Africans had no lifesaving medication. Today 17 million people around the world have access to treatment, including more than half of all HIV positive Eastern and Southern Africans, according to UNAIDS.

denialism that would set back the battle against HIV/AIDS in his country. In his 2000 speech, Mandela instead attacked the epidemic as “the greatest health crisis in human history.” The crisis was destined to touch him in a personal way: In 2005, his son Makgatho Lewanika Mandela died from AIDS at age 54. On Monday in Durban’s cavernous International Convention Centre, Makgatho’s son, Ndaba, joined his cousin Kweku, and the two spoke movingly of their grandfather’s work and legacy. “Sixteen years ago my grandfather arrived on this stage at the tipping point,” said Kweku Mandela. “Madiba asked us to do something about HIV/

South Africa now has the largest treatment program of any country in the world with 3.4 million people on ARVs. In 2000, a spindly 11-year-old boy, no bigger than a fast blink, addressed the conference, asking the world to “care for us and accept us. We are all human beings. We are normal. We have hands. We have feet. We can walk. We can talk. Don’t be afraid of us—we are all the same.” No one could turn away from this child who captivated the audience with his big smile and bigger heart—except Mbeki. Seated in the audience, the former South African president walked out before young Johnson finished his speech. The boy died a year later. By contrast, this year, international superstars Queen Latifah and Common provided an unofficial kick-off to AIDS 2016 on Saturday with a concert urging the world to “keep the promise and stop AIDS. At a protest before the event, Latifah, who played an HIV positive mother in the 2007 HBO film “Life Support,” marched alongside the mayor of Durban and the late Nkosi Johnson’s adoptive mother. And South African-born celebrity Charlize Theron made a dazzling appearance at Monday’s opening ceremony.

n August 5, 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a demonstration for fair housing in Marquette Park where he was attacked by angry white protesters. After being hit in the head with a brick/stone, he slowly got up and continued on.
