NEWS briefly EDUCATION COVID-19 VACCINE TO BE TESTED IN UIC CLINICAL TRIAL The University of Illinois at Chicago will soon test a vaccine for COVID-19. Expected to launch July 9, the trial — a phase 3 clinical study— will test the efficacy of a vaccine developed by biotech company Moderna. “We want to see if the vaccine will prevent people from getting COVID-19 or if it will prevent people from experiencing severe illness if they do get the disease,” said Dr. Richard Novak, lead investigator of the clinical trial at UIC. UIC is expected to be the only site in Chicago selected to launch the Moderna phase 3 trial, which is being administered by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. “UIC has a history of engaging diverse communities in our research programs and I believe our ability to reach the communities that have been hardest hit by the pandemic is one of the reasons that we were selected for this clinical trial,” Novak said. “We want to test this vaccine in people who are most at risk of experiencing complications and death due to the virus.” The UIC vaccine trial will be accessible through a number of clinical locations in the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, or UI Health, including sites in Pilsen, Little Village and Hyde Park. U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RELEASES DOG ATTACK NATIONAL RANKINGS The number of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employees attacked by dogs nationwide fell to 5,803 in 2019 — more than 200 fewer than in 2018 and more than 400 fewer since 2017. According to USPS Safety Awareness Program Manager Chris Johnson, technology supports carrier safety in two ways: Mobile Delivery Devices, handheld scanners used by carriers to confirm customer delivery, include a feature to indicate the presence of a dog at an individual address. And the Informed Delivery service alerts customers to mail and packages coming to their homes, allowing them to plan for the carrier’s arrival by securing dogs safely. A total of 5,803 USPS employees were attacked by dogs in 2019. The top 20 rankings comprise 30 cities, as some cities reported the same number of attacks. In 2019, Chicago, Illinois ranked third on the list with 54 attacks.

“THE ECONOMIST US PRESIDENTIAL FORECAST” FINDS THAT JOE BIDEN CURRENTLY HAS 83% CHANCE OF WINNING AMERICA’S PRESIDENCY The Economist recently launched its first-ever statistical forecast of a US presidential election, calculating that Joe Biden currently has 83% chance of winning the presidency. https://economist.com/ us2020model The model, called “The Economist US presidential forecast,” was created by The Economist’s data team with help from Andrew Gelman and Merlin Heidemanns, political scientists at Columbia University. It estimates Joe Biden’s and Donald Trump’s probabilities of winning each individual state and the election overall. To produce these figures, it combines fundamental factors, such as economic conditions, presidential popularity and the amount of time one party has been in power, with polling data at both the national and state level. The model’s projections will be updated daily until the election to reflect the latest available data. G. Elliott Morris, data journalist at The Economist, said: “Among other innovations, The Economist US presidential forecast is the first of its kind to correct for partisan bias inherent in many presidential election polls. Those who knew her best said the late Clara Kirk was more than a philanthropist, but a mother and grandmother to countless women and children she encountered during her time as a champion for the less fortunate. “One thing about my mom that the average person might not know is that my mother was mean when it came to discipline,” recalled her son McKinley Bell, 63. “She was loving, but she did not spare the rod with us [her children] if we got out of line.” And her daughter, Sabrina Burnett, 64, said, “her work at the shelter and her children was her legacy.” According to Bell, Kirk died at home on June 8 at age 79. Elected officials, community stakeholders, activists, and many residents from Englewood where Kirk lived for more than 20 years attended her June 18 funeral at True Temple of Solomon Church in Englewood. “I got a chance to witness firsthand the love and compassion that ‘Mother’ Clara Kirk had for God’s people. As a child, I remember my mother [former Alderman Shirley Coleman] taking me to Clara’s House on 62nd Street Paulina Avenue,” said Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th), whose ward includes West Englewood. “We bought clothing, food and toiletries for the women and children and her tireless energy and dedication for [the] economic and personal growth of the less fortunate, will forever be etched in the improvements for our community and city.”
Ald. David Moore (17th), whose ward includes Englewood, read a Resolution by the city of Chicago at her funeral, and said Kirk was a true servant with a pure heart. “What she meant to the community of Englewood, our city and me personally, is beyond measure,” explained Moore. “To Englewood, she was the mother who cared for families making a difference in the lives of young people by putting a roof over their heads; to the city, she was Clara’s House; and to me, she was momma Kirk.” As a community stakeholder, Kirk, a widow, was the founder of the nonprofit West Englewood United Organization, which operated the former Clara’s House, a transitional shelter where women stayed up to 120 days, and Clara’s Place, a 13-unit apartment building designated for long-term occupants. She founded the organization in 1983 and opened the shelters in 1987 while working as a custodian for Chicago Public Schools where she retired. During her more than 30 years running the shelter Kirk, like so many nonprofits, faced financial challenges that almost derailed her mission of helping struggling families. In 2013, the shelters faced closure after Kirk accumulated $41,969 in outstanding fines by the Chicago Department of Buildings. The city of Chicago, later that year, settled with Kirk for $1,000. But Peoples Gas disconnected her service at Clara’s House on Oct. 16, 2013 because of a past due bill totaling $21,026.74. Service was restored on Oct. 26 after an anonymous donor paid the bill in full, which included
an additional $11,000 paid for the organization’s second shelter, Clara’s Place. And in November 2013, former NBA player Will Bynum, who once lived in Englewood and attended Crane High School on the West Side, paid the shelter’s $3,000 past due electric bill to prevent disconnection. Veteran Chicago journalist Robin Robinson became friends with Kirk after she volunteered to emcee a fundraiser for her. “Clara Kirk showed me just how powerful one relentless person can be. She sheltered, fed, loved, empowered, taught, scolded, and protected hundreds of women and children by the sheer strength of her faith and persuasion,” recalled Robinson. “Everyone who met her and saw her love in action, wanted to help [her].” Kirk received many awards and recognitions during her tenure including one by the Illinois African American Families Commission for her years of work as a shelter operator for homeless women and children, and also the President’s Service Award from former President Bill Clinton. Born in 1941 in Mississippi, Kirk’s family was part of the Great Migration north. Her family settled on Chicago’s Northwest Side, and in 1974, she moved to Englewood where she lived in the 7000 block of South Paulina Avenue until her death. Robinson added that she is confident Kirk’s legacy of helping people will continue for years to come because she left a permanent imprint on Englewood and on her. “Anytime I think there is a mountain too high, I will say her name. And start climbing,” said Robinson.

Residents take advantage of COVID-19 testing at Compassion Baptist Church BY TIA CAROL JONES
With African Americans and Latinx communities being disproportionately affected by COVID-19, there was a need in Southeast Chicago for a COVID-19 Testing Site. Recently, Aurora Advocate Health and Compassion Baptist Church came together to help fill that void. From June 10-June 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Wednesday-Tuesday, Aurora Advocate Health opened a COVID-19 Testing facility at Compassion Baptist Church, located at 2650 E. 95th St. According to Aurora Advocate Health, more than 100 people took advantage of the mobile testing service. While testing was focused on those who had symptoms, people who did not have symptoms, but who still wanted to get tested, also had an opportunity to get a test. Rev. Watson Jones III, pastor of Compassion Baptist Church, said he had been trying to get testing in the community. Jones said Compassion Baptist Church has a partnership with Trinity Church where Trinity hosts health

fairs at his church. “I had been trying to reach out to Trinity since late March, early April, offering space
for coronavirus testing and asking them to consider, because at the time, there was not testing on the south side
of Chicago, and I wanted testing for our community – Black and Latino, as well, so we could kind of know where we are, since we were hit so hard.” Jones said he also went through State Rep. Curtis Tarver, D. Dist-25; State Rep. Kam Buckner, D. Dist. 26; and State Rep. Marcus Evans, Jr., D-Dist. 33, to get testing through the state of
Illinois. He said there was a quick connection for the tests through Advocate Trinity Hospital President Rashard Johnson. He credited Jackie Rouse, manager of Community Health & Volunteer Services, with having a commitment to bring testing to the community. He added Rouse “worked at Trinity in our area for quite some time, I think she was just very passionate about really serving our community,” he said. “I think for Jackie, she was thinking very community-minded. How can we help out our community when we know that Black folks in Chicago and Latino folks in Chicago have been the hardest hit, dying two or three [times more] than white people have been [dying]. So, I think that was some of Jackie’s passion, was to get as many people tested as possible.” Jones said it was the church’s second time doing COVID-19 testing, through Howard Brown Health Center. He said it was through talks with the alderman and a deacon who works for the Chicago Department of Public Health. He said there were
121 people who were tested in one day. “My heart’s desire, my goal and still is a goal, is to have testing in our area, be it for a week, be it permanent. My heart is to see permanent, and not necessarily at Compassion, but in this area, because the Southeast side is its own unique area,” he said. Turnaround time for test results are within three to seven days and were available via the Advocate Aurora Health LiveWell mobile app or staff would contact people who did not have access to the app. In an effort to expand testing and focus on communities impacted by the virus, Aurora Advocate Health also opened a COVID-19 testing facility at Imani Village, located at 901 E. 95th St. “This is the next phase of our push to offer more COVID-19 testing to the communities that need it most,” Johnson said in a press release. “By taking testing right to the people we serve, especially in communities that have been hit the hardest, we hope to stem the spread of this virus. Expanding access to testing is a critical part of that effort.”

The movement recognizes the need for economic solidarity and requests that not one Black person in America spend a dollar outside of black owned businesses on July 7th. In 2016, the #BankBlack and #BuyBlack Movement began with a simple text and call to action from Killer Mike to Black America to move its money to Black
owned banks. Since that time, while corporate America remained silent, OneUnited Bank actively supported social justice movements including #BlackLivesMatter, #TakeAKnee and the #1619Project. To compile this year’s Best & Brightest MBAs, Poets&Quants reached out to 71 top graduate business schools to nominate their best candidates for the honor. Responses were judged by P&Q editorial according to three criteria: extracurricular activities, academic and professional achievements, and overall insightfulness. Ultimately, P&Q received 243 nominations from 68 programs, including nearly every MBA program ranked among the world’s best. The 2020 list includes
representatives from the most prestigious programs, including Stanford, Wharton, MIT, INSEAD, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and London Business School. By gender, the Best & Brightest were an even 50-50 even split, with 38 students hailing from outside the United States. This year, McKinsey & Company hired the largest number of Best & Brightest MBAs with nine, followed by Microsoft and Amazon with five each. The “Best & Brightest MBAs” is the second of a four-part series recognizing the world’s top business students. As the number of those living with dementia grows, experts offer advice on how to be a compassionate caregiver StatePoint - Dementia can be devastating for the people who live with it and their family members, and it’s a diagnosis more Americans will face as the U.S. population ages. In the next 20 years, the total number of those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia in the U.S. is expected to approximately double from 7.2 million to nearly 13 million, according to the Milken Institute. “As the life a person always knew becomes increasingly unfamiliar, caregivers can play an important role in helping ease anxiety,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc., an in-home healthcare and assistance provider that takes a positive approach to caring for those with dementia. “With the right knowledge, a caregiver can help their loved one cope with the changes they are experiencing.” Dementia is caused by physical changes in the brain and while there any many kinds of dementia, Alzheimer’s is the most common. The National Football League’s social justice initiative has continued to inspire change in underserved communities, including a $250 million commitment to bring awareness, dialogue, and a renewed direction to the conversation of racial and social inequality. On Thursday, June 11, officials revealed exclusively to Black Press USA, that the commitment includes dedicated financial resources from the league, clubs, and players to nonprofits. The commitment is also a league-wide amplification of inspiring stories of players making differences in their communities and society and deploying public policy and government affairs resources at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2019 season, NFL teams participated in or hosted more than 500 social justice events. Since 2017, teams have contributed $44 million from sources including social justice grants approved by the league’s players and owner’s workgroup; the NFL Foundation matching grants; an ongoing financial commitment to the Player’s Coalition; and as part of 32 teams’ social justice matching funds. “What inspired [the NFL] is the players lending their voices, their work, to issues of social injustice and racial injustice,” stated Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president of social responsibility and community relations. “This work didn’t start yesterday. Around 2016 and 2017, Colin Kaepernick and other players raised their voices and protested and started a movement which then inspired the NFL and our ownership to launch our Social Justice Initiatives.” As a result of those efforts, continued discussions and dialogue, Isaacson said the NFL prioritized four key areas: education, economic
advancement, criminal justice reform, and community and police relations. Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback famously took a knee during the playing of the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice. However, the Super Bowl quarterback’s protest was widely misconstrued and condemned by many, and teams have failed to sign the former star. In the wake of continued police violence against African Americans and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the NFL recently issued an apology for failing to understand the scope of the injustice African Americans have faced. “Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been watching what’s going on, and there have been tons of discussions about what else we can do, how can we make it clear that this is an authentic and long-term commitment from the NFL,” Isaacson told Black Press USA. “That commitment is a standard $250 million over 10 years,” she stated. Isaacson noted that the league’s 100-year history hasn’t just been about football. “We’d be nowhere without our fans, and nowhere without our players and the communities that invest in us,” she pronounced. “We’ve always been about investing in our communities, and a lot of that investment has been in underserved communities, Black communities, and communities of color. Whether it be on cancerrelated work, health and wellness, physical activities, or domestic violence. What the NFL players have brought to the forefront over the past couple of years have been the importance of bringing community and law enforcement together. We’ve put our resources, money, and time into education and awareness. The NFL has stood for communities and giving back to communities, and particularly underresourced and underfunded communities.”
