NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS PRESIDENT ENCOURAGES YOUNG PROFESSIONALS OF COLOR IN THE AGE OF PRESIDENT TRUMP NEW YORK – Carlos Clanton, National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) president provides words of encouragement for young professionals who may be living with intense uncertainty in the current political climate. In a recent blog post, he answered the question “what now?” Clanton draws upon the strength of leaders from previous eras and provides insights for action steps Millennials and Generation Z can take now to move forward. “We have always been a people who are resilient, and we will survive. Survival in this era will entail applying lessons demonstrated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Whitney M. Young. These leaders achieved great accomplishments because they worked together,” said Clanton. “Young professionals now can do the same. We have garnered the attention of the nation through our actions in Ferguson and beyond….We must be diligent about knowing and sharing the facts of our Movement. We must continue to be vocal. This is not a time to be silent,” he said. The National Urban League, rooted in social justice, has been fighting for more than 100 years to ensure equal jobs, housing, education and health for all. Through NULYP membership, active voting participation and mutual support, Clanton reminds young professionals of their power to continue to fight for equality for all. Black PR Wire

PROPOSAL TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA SPARKS CONVERSATION ABOUT AFFECTS OF
LEGALIZING THE DRUG
M
By Christopher Shuttlesworth
arijuana advocates are trying to lay the groundwork for Illinois to become the
first state in the Midwest and the ninth nationwide to legalize recreational pot, arguing the move will help solve the state’s notorious budget crisis, according to an Associated Press release. As of right now, marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, especially for young people throughout in the United States. A 2015 study shows that more than 11 million young adults between the ages of 18-25 used marijuana, according to drug abuse.gov. Renee M. Johnson, who is an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Mental Health, said this is common because marijuana is pleasurable and less harmful than other drugs on the market like cocaine or heroin due to its easier withdrawal syndrome. “More than 50 percent of the American public believes that it should be legalized for recreational purposes,” Johnson said. “It’s not common for people to stigmatize it like cocaine or heroin.” The drug, “marijuana is referred to dried leaves, flowers, stems and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. The plant contains the mindaltering chemical delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other related compounds. Extracts can also be made from the cannabis plant,” according to drug abuse. gov. While the drug has benefits, especially for medical patients, Johnson didn’t deny the fact that marijuana also has negative effects as well.Regular use of marijuana poses “public health concerns such as reduced educational achievements, risks of injuries when driving,
increase respiratory problems, cancer, COPD and heart disease,” Johnson said. “What we have found amongst African Americans is that overall, they are less likely to use [the drug] Johnson said. But among the African Americans who do use, they are more likely to have problems like addictions or substance abuse-disorders, she said. “There are negatives with every drug,” PDI Medical Chief Operation Officer Joseph Friedman said. “One of the less negatives with cannabis is that there has never been any reported overdoses or deaths from cannabis. Now, people have gotten high and made wrong choices from cannabis, but cannabis itself has not shut down doors that a number of medications can do,” he said. According to an Associated Press release, two Illinois state lawmakers proposed legislation a few weeks ago that would allow citizens who are “21 and older to possess, grow or buy up to an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana and license businesses to sell marijuana products subject to regulation. They say it would help fill Illinois’ multibillion-dollar budget hole with $350 to $700 million in new tax revenue. The proposal is being launched at a time when the federal government is considering ramping up enforcement against recreational use. As of now, the Department of Justice and Attorney General Jeff Sessions are reviewing an administration memo by Former President Barack Obama, which helped other states obtain flexibility in passing marijuana laws. “Legalizing or removing penalties will hopefully reduce some of the criminal justice outcomes,” Johnson said. “However, I think it’s among the same story as other drugs. But I think because Blacks have less of a social safety net for resources...substance abuse becomes more risky,” he said.
“More than 50 percent of the American public believes that it should be legalized for recreational purposes,” Johnson said. “It’s not common for people to stigmatize it like cocaine or heroin.”

whom many accuse of espousing racist ideas, preventing him from giving a public lecture at the college. In a melee immediately following, a professor who was simply accompanying Murray was injured by protestors. At many other colleges, Milo Yiannopoulos was prevented from speaking by protester disruptions. In contrast, GWU was able to permit him to speak there without any disruptions, notes Banzhaf. GWU’s actions show that it is possible for universities to permit even controversial figures to be heard espousing unpopular views, and thereby protecting free speech and academic freedom from the heckler’s veto, says Banzhaf. In light of a growing student belief that they have a right not to hear - and even to prevent others from hearing - views which they find offensive and/or label “hate speech,” the best policy may be for colleges to take very prompt action to arrest protesters at the earliest signs of disruptive behavior, rather than allowing the conduct to continue and get our of hand, he says. He notes that apparently none of the disruptors at Middlebury have yet been disciplined Source: Prolog.org

Legislators announce bill to limit charter school expansion
State Rep. Will Guzzardi and other lawmakers announced plans to push a new law that would significantly limit the growth of charter school operations in financially distressed school districts, citing the immediate, wrenching financial crisis at the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), which could face early closure June 1. At a press conference Monday, Rep. Guzzardi, Rep. Mary Flowers, Rep. Luis Arroyo, Sen. Omar Aquino, Ald. Milly Santiago (31) and Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36) urged the Illinois General Assembly to pass HB 3567 to establish a moratorium on new charter operations in financially distressed school districts. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) uses its School District Financial Profile to evaluate the fiscal health of districts around the state. HB 3567 would put a moratorium on charter expansion in districts labeled “financial early warning” or “financial watch,” the two lowest tiers. Roughly 90 districts around the state fall into those categories, including Chicago Public Schools. This bill would not affect currently operating charter schools, but would prevent new campuses from opening. Ald. Villegas cited the struggle in recent months among local leaders and community organizations to try to halt the expansion of a Noble charter school on the Northwest Side. “The Governor has dismissed any real efforts at addressing CPS’ governance and revenue issues,” said Ald. Santiago. ”His rhetoric and actions are dangerous and jeopardize students’ education. This bill provides protections and a tangible opportunity to establish effective solutions to the over-expansion of charter operations. I urge the Mayor and his Board of Education to support this measure and protect the district.”
Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Honors 35 Vietnam War Veterans
Vietnam War Veterans were recently honored and thanked for their service during the Vietnam War at the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veterans Home in LaSalle, Illinois. During the ceremony, a total of 35 Veterans were honored with a 50-year commemoration pin and certificate. This national commemoration was authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense, and launched by the President as follows: In 2007, the 110th Congress incorporated language in H.R. 4986 authorizing the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. “The celebration is to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war, or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States, and to thank and honor the families of these veterans,” said IDVA Director Erica Jeffries. “These veterans put their lives on the line for us. They deserve our recognition and respect for the sacrifices they undertook for our nation.” The Commemoration honors all United States veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time between November 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975, regardless of location. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that today there are 7 million living Vietnam veterans and 9 million families of those who served in this time frame. We make no distinction between veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or who were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War period. All were called to serve and the overwhelming majority of these veterans served honorably and admirably.
Mulroe works to move emissions testing centers back to Chicago
Chicago residents may no longer be forced to drive to the suburbs for their vehicle emissions testing based on new legislation sponsored by State Senator John Mulroe (D-Chicago). After emissions test sites closed in the Chicagoland area in November, Mulroe introduced legislation to require the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to locate vehicle emissions inspections stations within a five-mile radius of those subject to testing. “By closing emissions testing facilities in Chicago, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has created an undue burden on Chicago residents to meet the emission testing requirement” Mulroe said. “Getting a vehicle’s emissions tested can already be a time-consuming task in and of itself. We should not add to that by forcing Chicagoans to driver further to fulfill this obligation.” The Illinois Vehicle Emissions Testing Program was established by federal law to improve air quality and public health in large cities. Current state law requires emissions test sites to be located within a 12-mile radius of vehicle owners subject to testing. Cars manufactured in 1996 or later must have its emissions tested after it is 4 years old. “The goal of the emissions testing is to reduce air pollution from vehicles,” Mulroe said. “We shouldn’t be increasing pollution by forcing individuals to drive further from their homes for testing.”

ICC Establishes Office of Cybersecurity and Risk Management CHICAGO, IL - The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) announced recently the establishment of a new Office of Cybersecurity and Risk Management, with Dominic Saebeler serving as director. Through the development of policy, strategy and best practice sharing, the Office of Cybersecurity and Risk Management is charged with prioritizing and supporting the ongoing efforts of regulated Illinois utilities to protect critical infrastructure from cybersecurity risk and unauthorized access to system and electronic data. While cybersecurity has not traditionally been addressed by state public utility regulators, a December 2015 Ukrainian cyber-attack, which left more than 225,000 customers powerless for six hours, and other recent indications of cyber espionage targeting the United States has made it necessary for regulators to discern how to best protect the services, data and information valuable to customers and companies in the electricity, gas, water and telecommunications industries. “The growing sophistication of utilitybased cybersecurity preparation and ongoing efforts to drive comprehensive situational
awareness makes the ICC uniquely positioned to partner with stakeholders and encourage further collaboration,” said ICC Chairman Brien J. Sheahan. “The establishment of the Office of Cybersecurity and Risk Management allows us to do so on a consistent basis and maintain the most proactive infrastructure possible within Illinois.” “The Commission takes seriously its mission to ensure the provision of adequate, safe and reliable public utility services,” said ICC Executive Director Cholly Smith. “Dominic’s legal background and expertise in IT policy make him well equipped for the role and the creation of this office cements our commitment to making sure Illinois is doing everything it can to defend against the potential disruption that cyber intrusions can cause to vital utility services.” Saebeler is an Illinois attorney whose career has spanned policy, technology and law. Most recently, Saebeler served as the Chief of Information Technology Policy at the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT), a state agency responsible for the information technology functions of agencies under the jurisdiction of the Governor.
Chicago Bridge Gets a Makeover By Christopher Shuttlesworth “The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that $4.2 million dollars will be released for a City of Chicago project to repair two key [impaired] bridges that carry Lake Shore Drive over Lawrence Avenue and Wilson Avenue. The project’s total cost will estimate to $8.4 million combined, which will be split between state and federal funding,” according to an IDOT press release. IDOT’s Public Information Officer Gianna Urgo and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Director of Public Affairs, Michael Claffey stated that safety is their main goal and believe the bridges are in need of significant repairs. “Safety is our top priority and these two bridges are badly in need of rehabilitation,” Claffey said. “The [bridges] were recently cited in a report by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association as being among the top ten most-traveled structurally deficient bridges in Illinois.” Claffey highlighted that although the Lawrence and Wilson Avenue bridges were listed as “structurally deficient,” it doesn’t mean they present a danger to the public. It only means that they need to be closely monitored and require rehab work in the near future. According to IDOT, the project’s repairs will improve the safety and “extend the life of the bridges.” Scheduled Repairs at Lake Shore Drive over Lawrence and Wilson Avenue will begin during this 2017 summer and will last between six to eight months, Claffey said. “Structural repairs will address the heavily deteriorated
concrete beams and installation of protective shielding under the badly deteriorated concrete deck,” he said. Wynndalco Enterprises, which is an “certified MBE/DBE that provides Design Engineering, Information Technology, and E-Rate Program consultant services,” provided their services to CDOT on the Lawrence and Wilson Avenue bridge’s project, according to wynndalco.com. “Phase I scope of work included the preparation of a Phase I Report/Environmental Assessment (ECAD) and the following reports: Location Design Study, Bridge Condition Report, and Geotechnical Report. These reports addressed design criteria, traffic analysis, typical section analysis, type, size and location plans, right-of-way determination, horizontal/vertical alignment alternatives, topographic survey, soil conditions, intersection design studies, environmental inventory and mitigation and bridge alternative studies. Phase II design services included the preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimates for the replacement of both bridges,” according to wynndalco.com. Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said once the community bridges are repaired they will provide better passages for residents and commuters across the city of Chicago. “The Lawrence and Wilson bridges provide a vital connection between communities and the lakefront,” Blankenhorn said. “These repairs will deliver safer travel along and under the bridges, allowing residents to better enjoy Chicago’s beautiful lakefront as they walk, bike or drive to the beach,” according to an IDOT press release.

New Research Highlights Solar Jobs Expansion in Local Communities Nationwide WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Solar Foundation recently released data on the number of solar jobs in every state, metropolitan area, county, and congressional district, revealing the impact of the nation’s historic solar jobs boom down to the local level. This data can be found on an interactive Solar Jobs Map available at SolarStates.org. The new Solar Jobs Map is part of the data collection effort for The Solar Foundation’s Solar Jobs Census 2016, the seventh annual report on solar employment in the United States. In addition to the map, The Solar Foundation produced 50 state-level fact sheets and released an analysis of the economic impact of the solar labor market nationwide and in five states: California, Florida, New York, Ohio, and Texas. The Solar Jobs Census 2016 found that employment increased by a historic 25 percent nationwide from 2015 to 2016, for a total of 260,077 solar workers. This growth occurred across all regions of the country -- the number of solar jobs increased in 44 of the 50 states from 2015 to 2016. In 21 of the 50 states, solar jobs grew by 50 percent or more. Metropolitan areas across the nation also saw historic solar jobs growth from 2015 to 2016, as the data in the Solar Jobs Map shows. For example, solar jobs in the Cleveland, Ohio metropolitan area doubled, for a total of 1,632 solar workers in 2016. The number of jobs in the San Antonio, Texas metro area increased by 146 percent to 1,767 solar workers.
Jobs in the Albuquerque, New Mexico metro area increased 78 percent to 1,771 solar workers. Jobs in Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida increased 40 percent to 1,215 solar workers. The Atlanta, Georgia metro area had 2,406 solar workers, a 15 percent increase from 2015; and jobs in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin metro area increased 20 percent to 1,033 solar workers. “The solar industry is generating well-paying jobs everywhere from Detroit to Miami to Salt Lake City, and in states from Ohio to Texas to South Carolina,” said Andrea Luecke, President and Executive Director of The Solar Foundation. “America’s solar energy boom adds tens of billions of dollars to our economy each year, all while providing an affordable, reliable, and local energy source.” In 2016, The Solar Foundation found that with 260,077 solar workers nationwide, the solar industry produced $62.5 billion in direct sales. The solar industry’s broader labor impact that includes direct, indirect, and induced jobs amounted to nearly 789,000 U.S. jobs. These jobs paid more than $50 billion in salaries, wages, and benefits and produced $154 billion in total economic activity for the United States in 2016. State-based economic impact data for California, Florida, New York, Ohio, and Texas are available via fact sheets at SolarStates. org. “Solar power not only enhances environmental protection and health -- it helps accelerate economic growth,” said Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. “We are pleased that the solar industry continues to find
Colorado a good state for business. For years, Colorado has been on the leading edge of clean energy and solar deployment. Thanks to Coloradans’ vision, initiative, and leadership, we’ve grown our solar workforce by 20 percent in 2016 -- and are among the top states in solar deployment, setting a great example for the entire nation.” “As a Solar America City and a SolSmart Gold City, we’ve worked to make it easier and more affordable to install solar,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “As a result, we have seen tremendous growth of solar job opportunities in Milwaukee and hope to see continued growth in these sustainable jobs. These jobs are important to our local economy and help us reach many of the goals in our City’s sustainability plan.” Since 2010, The Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census has defined solar workers as those who spend at least 50 percent of their time on solarrelated work. The Solar Foundation has consistently found that approximately 90 percent of these workers spend 100 percent of their time on solar-related work. The Solar Jobs Census 2016 was part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) data collection effort that included more than 500,000 telephone calls and over 60,000 emails to energy establishments in the U.S. between October and November 2016. This resulted in a total of 3,888 full completions for establishments involved in solar activity in the United States. Detailed information on solar jobs at the national level can be found in the full report for the National Solar Jobs Census 2016, available at SolarJobsCensus.org. Complete information on solar jobs at the state and local levels can be found in the Solar Jobs Map available at SolarStates.org.

Getting the Best Price for Your House to Help Finance Your Retirement (NewsUSA) - Have you forgotten something in figuring where you’re going to retire to? Let’s see, you’ve researched which states tax Social Security income (only 14, including Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, North Dakota and Vermont). And you’ve even consulted the numbers-crunchers at Bankrate.com to learn which states scored highest overall in everything from cost of living to access to health care (South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming). But here’s a question for all you homeowners: Given the results of a report from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate -- 57 percent of boomers say they plan to move to a new home in retirement -- what are you doing right now to make sure your current house fetches a good price to help finance your retirement dreams? “As people grapple with whether to pull up stakes, there’s small margin for error,” the New York Times’ coverage of the report noted. Here’s some tips for preparing what’s likely your biggest asset for prospective buyers: * Get rid of the clutter. No doubt you have years worth of memories on display. But they’re your memories. And painful as it may be, it’s time to accept that not everyone appreciates having turned your den, for example, into a shrine to the ‘69
Mets. “Buyers shouldn’t be distracted from imagining themselves living in your space,” says Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby’s in Montclair, New Jersey. * Think twice before doing any trendy remodeling. Especially if your home is older, you may be tempted to go as far in trying to spruce things up as, say, tearing down a wall between the kitchen and an adjoining room just because Angie’s List says creating the feel of more space is “one of the hottest trends in home remodeling.” Well who’s to say it’ll still be hot in six months or a year? * Think “curb appeal.” There’s a reason roof replacement consistently makes Remodeling magazine’s annual Cost vs. Value report. A roof is the first thing potential buyers notice -- even from down the street -- and you’ve already lost the sale if yours isn’t up to par. “It’s a huge turn-off,” says O’Neill, “and makes people predisposed to find even more things they don’t like.” For the look of luxury at very affordable prices, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (www.gaf. com), North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. * Fix major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with a sputtering boiler? Enough said.

William Barber headline 50th Anniversary of Beyond Vietnam New York City, NY – More than halfway through President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, Civil Rights activists of the past and present headlined an event at The Riverside Church in the City of New York where they commemorated Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and drew sharp contrasts between his legacy and current U.S. policy. April 4, 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s controversial Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech, delivered at The Riverside Church exactly one year before his assassination. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at aged 39. In the speech, Dr. King denounced America’s triple sins of racism, poverty, and militarism. This event at The Riverside Church included an evening of conversation with Michelle Alexander and Ruby Sales on yesterday, April 4, 2017. “In Beyond Vietnam, Dr. King not only denounced a controversial war, he exposed to the country the underlying social evils of racism, poverty, and militarism which, if unaddressed, would continue to erode the soul of our nation,” said Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, Senior Minister of The Riverside Church in a released statement. “...The strident message of Beyond Vietnam is a reminder that people of faith and good conscience must step up and lead the way,” he said. Many historians have cited Beyond Vietnam as a turning point in Dr. King’s ministry that lead to a rapid decline in his popularity and his assassination. The speech was written by Dr. Vincent Harding, a longtime confidant and advisor of Dr. King, who went on to be a professor at Iliff School of Theology and founded the Veterans of Hope Project.
Dr. Harding possessed a spiritual and courageous insightfulness,” said the Rev. Dr. Thomas Wolfe, President, Iliff School of Theology. “He saw himself as a servant of the civil rights movement. Many people, even many within the movement, saw this speech as extremely controversial. Despite the resistance to connecting the movement to the war, he drafted the speech because it reflected the heart of Dr. King’s message and all that was at stake for the soul of America. This speech will continue to inspire and be the voice of generations to come.” The event commemorating Beyond Vietnam featured Michelle Alexander and Ruby Sales in conversation in the Nave of The Riverside Church where King delivered the sermon and was co-hosted by Iliff School of Theology, Veterans of Hope, and Union Theological Seminary. Alexander, visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary, is author of The New Jim Crow, which examines the continued legacy of discrimination and injustice that Dr. King confronted. Ruby Sales is a Civil Rights icon who worked in the Student Nonviolenct Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and went on to found The SpiritHouse Project. These event kicked off a yearlong Beyond the Dream: Living King’s Legacy initiative by The Riverside Church, spanning the 50th anniversaries of Beyond Vietnam and Dr. King’s assassination. The year of activism and education will move participants from celebrating King’s dream and ideals toward living out his calls for justice and reconciliation in our country. STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS! YOU WERE MADE TO STAND OUT
H
ave you ever compared yourself to someone else? If you have, you’re not alone. It’s natural for us to want to know where we rank or how we stack up. Unfortunately, when you compare yourself to others one of two things usually occurs: either you regard the other person as being better than you and you feel discouraged (sometimes motivated), or you regard yourself as being better than the other person, and you become puffed up (sometimes egotistical). Neither of which supports your spiritual growth. Pointless comparisons do little more than help you take your eye off the prize...being all that God created YOU to be. “Who am I that you are mindful of me, that you hear me when I call” (Psalm 8 - NRSV). Here the psalmist sings about the majesty of how we are made and how important we are to God. He points us back to the origins of the divine potential that has been placed within each one of us. Though there may be an avalanche of evidence in the midst of our lineage, culture, neighborhood, or family, the psalmist’s words give credence to the notion that we have been set apart for a dynamic purpose. Like the prodigal son, it takes courage, conviction, and faith to come to yourself and be what God called you to be. The only thing that matters is, are you better today than you were yesterday? “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 Become better by developing what God gave you. It’s hard to fit in when you were made to stand out. ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION OFFERS TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS DURING NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS MONTH CHICAGO, IL - According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, there are 588,000 people providing unpaid care to someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia in Illinois. The level of assistance provided by caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias tends to be extensive. As symptoms worsen and the amount of care needed continues to increase, caregivers report stress, anxiety and even depression at high rates. In honor of National Stress Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter offers tips to help manage stress throughout the role of caregiving. Know what community resources are available. Adult day programs, in-home assistance, visiting nurses and meal delivery are just some of the services that can help you manage daily tasks. Use the online Community Resource Finder or contact your local Alzheimer’s Association office for assistance in finding Alzheimer’s care resources in your community. Get help and find support. The online Care Team Calendar helps you organize friends and family who want to help provide care and support. A 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), ALZConnected
online community and local support groups are all good sources for finding comfort and reassurance. If stress becomes overwhelming, seek professional help. Use relaxation techniques. There are several simple relaxation techniques that can help relieve stress. Try more than one to find which works best for you. Techniques include: Visualization (mentally picturing a place or situation that is peaceful and calm) Meditation (which can be as simple as dedicating 15 minutes a day to letting go of all stressful thoughts) Breathing exercises (slowing your breathing and focusing on taking deep breaths) Progressive muscle relaxation (tightening and then relaxing each muscle group, starting at one end of your body and working your way to the other end) Get moving. Physical activity — in any form — can help reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing. Even 10 minutes of exercise a day can help. Take a walk. Do an activity you love, such as gardening or dancing. Find time for yourself. Consider taking advantage of respite care so you can spend time doing something you enjoy. Respite care provides caregivers with
a temporary rest from caregiving, while the person with Alzheimer’s disease continues to receive care in a safe environment. Become an educated caregiver. As the disease progresses, new caregiving skills may be necessary. The Alzheimer’s Association offers programs in-person, online and over the phone to help you better understand and cope with the behaviors and personality changes that often accompany Alzheimer’s. You may also find it helpful to talk to other care partners and caregivers about how they are coping with the challenges of the disease and uncertainty about the future. Take care of yourself. Visit your doctor regularly. Try to eat well, exercise and get plenty of rest. Making sure that you are healthy can help you be a better caregiver. Make legal and financial plans. Putting legal and financial plans in place after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is important so that the person with the disease can participate. Having future plans in place can provide comfort to the entire family. For more information on signs of caregiver stress and ways to manage stress, contact the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900 or visit alz.org/ care.
