GYNECOLOGIST TALKS ABOUT MENOPAUSE AND PERIMENOPAUSE

Dr. Arianna Sholes-Douglas, double board-certified Gynecologist and author of “The Menopause Myth,” believes there should be more conversation around perimenopause, what it is and how

Sholes-Douglas said the menopause is the end of a women’s reproductive years and the cessation of the menstrual cycle for at least 12 months and a normal biological process where a woman’s hormones, especially estrogen decline, and a woman goes from reproductive and no longer reproductive.

THRESHOLDS CENTER FOR MENTAL

WELLBEING - SOUTH HOLDS RIBBON CUTTING FOR EXPANDED MENTAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES

Organization will bring more accessible mental health services to Chicago’s south side; will help remove barriers to necessary care Chicago, Ill. -- Thresholds, one of the largest mental health and substance use treatment providers in Chicago, held an official ribbon cutting and open house at its Center for Mental Wellbeing - South (Center) to announce the expansion of the Center’s accessible, person-centered, evidence-based, individualized care for community members and celebrate the new building expansion. In 2023, the Center received a grant to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), allowing them to offer expanded mental health care services, and making them one of just 19 clinics with the same designation in Illinois.

“We’re thrilled to be able to open the doors on the Thresholds expansion on the South Side, and we’re so thankful to our incredible staff, our inspiring and resilient members and our partners and donors who help make this work possible,” said Thresholds President and CEO Mark Ishaug. “There’s a need throughout the city, but especially here on the South Side, for comprehensive and accessible care. Thresholds is dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their income, housing or insurance status is able to receive the support they need to live fulfilling lives.”

Through the CCBHC designation and funding, the Center will now offer the following expanded services:

Individual and group therapy

Psychiatry

Medication Management

Substance Use Treatment

Care Coordination and Case Management

Crisis Services and Intervention

Psychosocial Rehabilitation

Peer Support Services

Primary Care Integration

The CCBHC model prioritizes coordinated, comprehensive health care and ensures person-centered treatment. Participants in the program provide outpatient mental health, substance abuse disorder and primary care screening services for individuals regardless of age, residency or ability to pay.

Thresholds currently has three other CCBHCs open in Illinois, including locations in Kankakee, McHenry and in Ravenswood on Chicago’s North Side. These clinics ensure access to crisis care at all hours, coordination with hospitals, law enforcement and schools, plus access to high-quality services including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help stop the overdose crisis.

CONGRESSMAN DANNY K. DAVIS

HIGHLIGHTS KEY ISSUES ON MILWAUKEE RADIO SHOW AS SURROGATE FOR VP KAMALA HARRIS AND GOVERNOR TIM WALZ

Chicago, IL – Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-07) appeared on Milwaukee’s WNOV 860 AM, serving as a surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. During his live interview on the “Community Voice” radio show hosted by Keith Parris, Congressman Davis emphasized the importance of the upcoming election. He highlighted the stark differences between the Harris-Walz campaign and Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda.

Davis focused on Vice President Harris’ vision for a “New Way Forward,” which centers on expanding opportunities for all Americans, particularly the middle class and working families. He also addressed the risks of unchecked power that Donald Trump’s Project 2025 would bring, calling out Trump’s dangerous policies that prioritize billionaires and corporations over working people.

Davis also spoke about the Harris-Walz campaign’s robust efforts to engage Black voters, particularly in Wisconsin. He noted that the Democratic campaign infrastructure in the state has never been stronger, with over 50 offices in key areas and more than 250 fulltime staffers on the ground working to reach voters in both red and blue counties.

Gynecologist Talks About Menopause And Perimenopause

Continued from page 1

She said the most common age where women end their menstrual cycle is 51 years old. While women might be menopausal at 51, women can be menopausal at 45, which is also normal.

“Perimenopause is the beginning of the symptoms and can be just as bad, or worse for some women, and it can last 8-10 years,” she said. She added that if a woman experiences menopause at 45, that women could experience perimenopause at 35.

Sholes-Douglas said the menopause is a spectrum and a journey. A woman can have all the symptoms before they are menopausal. She said perimenopause precedes menopause and is the beginning of the symptoms and hormonal changes that start to occur and lead up to a woman not having a menstrual period. She said perimenopause tends to be longer in African American women and they tend to have more symptoms, which includes hot flashes.

“The Menopause Myth” is a book written by Board-Certified Gynecologist Dr. Arianna Sholes-Douglas. PHOTO PROVIDED BY

Sholes-Douglas said with perimenopause a woman’s hormones can be very erratic, with irritability, worsening PMS, decreased libido, weight gain, hair loss, joint pain, hot flashes and night sweats. She said some women don’t understand they are not menopausal, they are perimenopausal and the only symptom they might have is insomnia, waking up at 3 a.m. and can’t go back to sleep, or have brain fog. She said perimenopausal symptoms can start as early as 35.

Sholes-Douglas said common myths about menopause is that their understanding of when menopause does start, and they don’t realize the symptoms start much earlier in life. Another myth is that gynecologists and healthcare providers have been trained in this area and are prepared to have the conversation with women. She said the reality is that most medical professionals, including gynecologists, are not trained in menopause.

“Most women are caught off guard, because they are either

dismissed, because their provider doesn’t know what’s going on, or they have a provider that isn’t current with literature and doesn’t really know what the current standards are,” she said. She added that there are providers that know all about it and are perfectly good at helping women with the journey, and those are the providers women should seek out.

The last myth of menopause is that hot flashes are the main symptom, when worsening PMS, brain fog, decreased libido, increased anxiety, heart palpitations and joint pain can be the top symptoms of menopause and perimenopause.

Sholes-Douglas said men should be as informed about menopause and perimenopause as they can be, as it can affect relationships. Menopause and perimenopausal symptoms can cause women to be less tolerant, more irritable and more reactionary than they would have been before, which can cause some pressure on the relationship. She said men should be aware of the symptoms and that it is not personal. She added that as men’s testosterone levels go down with andropause, it can be a transitionary period in the relationship, with hormonal changes on both sides as they age. She said she hopes that people research more, find a provider that can help them to get through the time.

Sholes-Douglas said that women who are going through perimenopause and menopause should visit menopause.org to get more information. It can help women find a provider who knows about menopause. She also suggests that people pick up her book, “The Menopause Myth,” to be more prepared.

“Embrace this change. Know that it can be challenging for some women, but there are a lot of women who will not have any significant symptoms and will get through it just fine. Just understand that it is the beginning of the rest of your life, where you are no longer incumbered by the risk of getting pregnant,” she said. She added that it can also lead to a little bit more sense of freedom and awareness and wisdom and help to approach life in a different way. She said it can be an empowering and transformative time.

Illinois Announces 2024 LIHEAP Application for Utility Bill Assistance

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) released information about this year’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to support income eligible households with utility costs. LIHEAP will be accepting applications through August 15, 2025, or until funds are exhausted.

“Every Illinoisan deserves to be able to keep the lights on and stay warm as we head into winter,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Thanks to $226 million from our Help Illinois Families Program, thousands of households will be eligible for LIHEAP assistance to manage utility costs. As always, equity remains at the core of our efforts and we’re prioritizing vulnerable residents to ensure they receive the support they need. I highly encourage all eligible families to apply.”

The energy bill assistance program offered through Help Illinois Families will provide $226 million to eligible families to assist with natural gas, propane, electricity bills and furnace assistance.

“LIHEAP is an essential program for families across Illinois,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “This priority application system will ensure families with the most critical need have the resources and information necessary to secure reliable access to energy utilities.”

Beginning October 1, 2024, eligible families can apply by visiting helpillinoisfamilies.com or by visiting their local agency (a list of partners throughout the state can be found here). Families can also call 1-833-711-0374 for assistance in 30 languages.

The priority application system will ensure families most in need are able to apply first. The first group eligible to apply is expected to represent more than half of households that apply for the program. The program began taking applications on Oct. 1, for (i) older adults (60 years +), (ii) individuals with a disability, (iii) families with children five years old or younger and (iv) households that are disconnected from their utilities, have a disconnection notice or have less than 25% in their propane tank. All other income eligible households can start applying November 1, 2024.

LIHEAP provides one-time payments directly to energy service providers on behalf of recipients. While the amount of support varies based on the needs of individual families, last year over 333,000 households received LIHEAP, with an average of over $724 per household.

All families who meet the qualifications and provide proper documentation will receive support until funding is exhausted. Families who earn up to two times the federal poverty level are eligible to receive support through LIHEAP. A chart with eligible income thresholds can be found on the webpage and below:

Biden-Harris Administration Awards Nearly $1.5 Million to Help Illinois Improve Maternal Health

CHICAGO – The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced nearly $1.5 million to the University of Illinois-Chicago to identify and implement innovative strategies to address the maternal health crisis. HRSA Deputy Administrator Jordan Grossman, joined by Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust and Co-chair of the bipartisan Maternity Care Caucus, announced this award in Chicago as part of HRSA’s latest state Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative convening.

HRSA announced the availability of this funding in December 2023 at a White House roundtable on innovation in maternal health convened by the Office of the Vice President Kamala Harris and the Domestic Policy Council in support of the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis.

State Maternal Health Innovation programs identify the key drivers of maternal mortality in their state, develop strategies and implement new interventions to address these issues tailored to their state’s needs. As part of this program, HRSA also funds State Maternal Health Task Forces that bring together health care providers, policymakers, patients, payers, and other stakeholders to develop shared solutions specific to their state’s needs and to better support pregnant women and new moms.

organizations can provide home visits from nurses, social workers, and other trained health workers who work with families to improve maternal and child health, child development and school readiness.

Living With Alzheimer’s You Are Not Alone

State Maternal Health Innovations programs have implemented a broad range of interventions to address maternal health challenges in their individual states. Examples of these interventions include early identification and treatment of hypertension to reduce preeclampsia and other risks, providing mobile simulation trainings to prepare health care providers for a range of adverse labor events, expanding access to trainings to rural and frontier hospitals that do not have a dedicated obstetrics department, and creating resources to improve first responders’ ability to respond to patients with substance use disorder during and after pregnancy.

This funding is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s broader efforts to improve maternal health and supports HRSA’s ongoing initiative to reduce maternal mortality and health disparities. HRSA’s Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative aims to accelerate HRSA’s efforts to improve maternal health outcomes in partnership with women, grant recipients, community organizations, and state and local officials nationwide.

Other key actions HRSA has taken to improve maternal health include:

Launching the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (833-TLC-MAMA) in 2022. The hotline provides 24/7 emotional and mental health support via call or text to expectant and new mothers and their families.

Expanding Healthy Start services. HRSA recently invested $105 million in community-based organizations to improve maternal and infant health across the country through Healthy Start. Healthy Start funding will better support moms and babies to improve health in communities experiencing high disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes.

Growing and diversifying the perinatal workforce, including doulas. HRSA has increased the number of obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs), nurses, midwives, doulas, and community health workers, especially in places without them, through grants, scholarships and loan repayment. For example, HRSA launched new programs to train more nurse midwifes who reflect the communities they serve, train and deploy more community-based doulas, and support the training of more nurse practitioners with a focus on maternal health, including in underserved and rural areas.

Investing in new community health center efforts to address maternal health disparities. HRSA invested more than $65 million in 35 HRSA-funded health centers across the country to implement innovative approaches to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce disparities for patients at highest risk.

DSU first HBCU to launch private merchandise label

(Black PR Wire) DSU’s private label will provide an expanded opportunity to control the design, quality, and variety of products that students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community wear and purchase. The brand inventory will include various types of limited-edition merchandise that will only be available directly from the University, and 5 percent of the sales will support student success by funding scholarships.

Everything Collegiate, owned and operated by Terance Harmon for over 20 years, holds more than 85 brand licenses for colleges, societies, and fraternities. As a primary vendor to over 60 colleges, including 39 HBCUs, it provides thousands of custom collegiate products including apparel, shoes, and giveaway items.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey,” said Harmon. “Our goal has always been to support and uplift HBCUs, and working with DSU has been a fulfilling step in that direction. I am excited to work with DSU on this historic move.”

DSU initially partnered with Everything Collegiate on a launch of merchandise last year at the time of the University’s branding update.

“Thanks to our team, the designs were met with an overwhelmingly positive response,” said Dr. Dawn Mosley, Senior Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “Our students, faculty, staff,

and alumni were thrilled with the new products and kept asking for more. The key difference was that we had control over the design process, working closely to ensure it resonated with our brand and audience. It made perfect sense, as we best know what our audience wants.”

The partnership will begin with a select choice of merchandise for which Everything Collegiate will manage the distribution while continuing to assist DSU in growing its private brand inventory in additional retail spaces and online. This will allow the University’s products to reach a wider audience

while maintaining high standards of quality and authenticity.

“We’re no longer restricted to buying premade or mass-produced products that follow a standard design with our logo incorporated within,” Dr. Mosley said. “That’s not true ownership. We must protect what has taken over a century to build.”

However, existing relationships with retailers will continue to be a valuable resource for students and the campus community to purchase everyday branded items.

“We are not competing with our campus stores or partners who sell merchandise with our brand. We value their contributions and the royalties they generate,” Dr. Mosley said. “It’s simply smart business to establish our own revenue stream from custom products. This also creates an exciting opportunity for our students and alumni to share their unique design ideas, which can further support scholarships for our students.”

The first round of student scholarships from initial product sales will be awarded in spring 2025. Moving forward, new-arrival merchandise will now feature the Hornets (tm) private-label branding. For early sales, click here or visit https://hbcudsu. com.

On this occasion, an exceptional dinner was organized in a private room at the Ritz, transformed by a spectacular floral decoration, paying homage to the natural raw materials used in the creation of her fragrances.

She has recently graced the covers of magazines as the new face for the Balmain Hair Couture line, as well as for the Akris brand for which she walked the runway during the Cannes Film Festival.

I HATE UNIVERSAL LIFE & TERM INSURANCE AND YOU SHOULD TOO!

Any time a person pays their premiums for 10, 20 and 30 years.

Only to have their premiums go up or the coverage run out, shame on that agent.

97% of all term policies never pay out a claim. This is due to most people letting their policies lapse, the companies know the policy is going to lapse. Google the statistics for yourself.

What people don’t understand about universal life is that the payment goes up every year. But you’re paying the same amount, then 10, 20 years later your policy lapses. You never hear from that agent, or he or she is out of the business.

Equal Hope addresses barriers women of color face when it comes to screening and treating cancer including lack of transportation to medical centers, lack of insurance, work schedule conflicts, lack of childcare, concerns ignored by physicians and the lack of consistent quality care depending on where patients go for care.

Breast Cancer rates nationwide are disproportionately higher among Black, brown and other women of color in underserved and unserved communities. In Chicago , t he communities with the highest mortality rates are located on the South and West s ides of the city. These communities are predominantly African American and Latino.

In 2023, Equal Hope’s outreach efforts reached more than 475,844 individuals, nearly 20% of Chicago’s population. Initiatives included distributing more than 106,320 flyers throughout Cook and Lake counties, providing more than 513 rides to health screenings, scheduling 3,117 appointments, and establishing primary care for 322 individuals.

Learn How Reverse Mortgages Can Affect Estate Planning

Reverse mortgages are one of the most misunderstood financial tools directed to the elderly. It is my intent to help dissuade the negative opinion that people hold towards reverse mortgages. Too often disdain is based on myths and hearsay, not fact.

Order

Here is a fact, a reverse mortgage is a financial tool, but it is not the right tool for every financial situation. When considering a reverse mortgage

There should be a planned outcome.

Here are some outcomes of getting a reverse mortgage:

-to lower monthly expenses.

-receiving tax free income from home equity.

-it allows a person to age at home

The myths that prevail are as follow:

-the ownership of homes is immediately transferred to the government

-a reverse mortgage NEVER has to be re-paid.

Elders, prior to receiving a reverse mortgage, must attend a training class. The training is to explain how a reverse mortgage works. However, it has been my experience that, even with the training, too often elders do not fully understand the terms of their reverse mortgage and how it affects their families.

In future columns, I will share scenarios of elders with reverse mortgages and what impact this may have on their estate plans.

Bye for now,

Bren.

HEALTH

StatePoint) Foot ulcers develop in about 15% of the 25 million Americans living with diabetes and are a top cause of hospitalization. These ulcers can lead to serious complications, such as infection and amputation. According to foot and ankle surgeons, there are steps you can take to prevent complications and keep your feet healthy, as well as breakthrough treatments that are saving limbs, restoring mobility and improving lives.

“The majority of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a reoccurring foot sore or an ulcer that won’t heal,” says John S. Steinberg, DPM, FACFAS, a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member and Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “Patients do best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.”

The surgeon members of ACFAS are sharing some important insights into preventing foot ulcers associated with diabetes and treating them if they do occur.

Make these precautions part of your foot care routine:

• Inspect feet daily using a flashlight and mirror to see the bottoms of your feet.

• Moisturize dry, cracking feet to prevent sores. Use powder to control moisture that can result in blisters.

• To prevent injury, wear protective, well-fitting shoes and socks at all times, even in the house. Chan

ge socks daily and more often if your feet get wet or sweaty. Avoid socks with holes or seams. Sometimes diabetic shoes are prescribed to avoid pressure and rubbing on the feet.

• Get regular foot exams from a foot and ankle surgeon, which can reduce amputation risk by 45-85%. The surgeon can also screen feet for loss of protective sensation.

• Manage your diabetes. Out-of-control blood sugar levels can lead to nerve cell damage, making it harder to detect foot problems. Look for telltale signs that an ulcer may be developing:

• Swelling. The foot or ankle may look puffy or engorged and larger than the other.

• Temperature. Cold feet might mean a circulatory issue, whereas hot feet might mean infection.

• Color changes. Redness and even other colors might appear before an ulcer forms.

• Calluses. If a callus changes colors or develops dark, “dried blood” colored spots, it may be time to have a foot and ankle surgeon offer a proper diagnosis.

Ask your foot and ankle surgeon about innovative treatments:

If you do experience a non-healing ulcer, talk to your foot and ankle surgeon right away about innovative technologies that stimulate healing.

Groundbreaking approaches include stem cell therapy, the use of bioengineered skin substitutes to accelerate growth of healthy skin, and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to promote healing and enable healthy, new tissue to grow. Today, foot and ankle surgeons rarely do a skin graft without NPWT. Skin grafting for foot ulcers has also advanced. Surgeons now use advanced reconstructive surgery and grafting techniques to promote wound healing and decrease wound recurrence.

The success rate of these advanced therapies is high, providing substantial improvement over treatments of the not-too-distant past, when doctors would clean and bandage the wound and hope for the best.

“Thanks to the many advances in diabetic foot care, patients today are having simpler surgeries, avoiding amputations, and getting back to everyday life sooner than ever before,” says Dr. Steinberg.
