More than 53,000 property owners who overpaid their First Installment taxes last year will automatically get back more than $47 million in refunds starting this week.

“If you have a refund coming, we’ll find you and return your money,” Pappas said. “By putting refunds on automatic pilot, we’re eliminating a lot of unnecessary paperwork and applications.”

More than 58 percent of the refunds will be deposited directly into property owners’ accounts over the next three months. See if you’re due an automatic refund by visiting cookcountytreasurer. com. Select the purple box labeled “Your Property Tax Overview” and enter your address or 14-digit Property Index Number (PIN).

Here’s a breakdown of some refunds:

16,629 homeowners who paid their property taxes online will see a total of $14.8 million electronically deposited to their bank or credit card accounts

22,241 homeowners who paid their taxes through a bank/mortgage escrow account will be mailed refund checks totaling $14.8 million

14,137 homeowners who paid taxes totaling $17.4 million in cash or by check will receive an electronic refund or will be mailed a refund application to ensure the proper party receives the refund

Most of the refunds will go to homeowners receiving property tax exemptions, which are applied to the Second Installment tax bill and reduce the total taxes due. The exemptions include: Homeowner, Senior Citizen, Senior Freeze and Disabled Persons. Second Installment 2021 property tax bills were due on December 30, 2022.

Pappas launched the automatic refund program in July 2018. Since then, more than 174,000 property owners have received about $129 million in refunds without having to fill out an application.

TILLMAN: DOLTON 149 GETS $150,000 STATE GRANT; SEN. SIMS THANKED

Calumet City, Ill. – South suburban Dolton School District 149 will receive a $150,000 grant from the state of Illinois in a supplemental budget recently approved by Illinois lawmakers, and its top elected official is offering a public “thank you” to a key state legislator who secured the funding.

Board of Education President Wilbur Tillman expressed his “deepest gratitude” to State Senator Elgie Sims (D-Chicago), the chair of the Illinois Senate Appropriations Committee, who sponsored the grant for the district.

“On behalf of the entire Board of Education, I want express my deepest gratitude to Senator Sims for championing the $150,000 grant for Dolton 149,” said Tillman. “The district appreciates Senator Sims support for and invest in local schools.”

The grant, which was part of a supplemental budget, HB 969, approved by lawmakers on January 10, 2023 during the legislature’s lame duck session, seeks to help the district with “violence interruption” and “community development,” according to the legislation.

“The safety of our students is a top priority for the district,” said Tillman. “And a thriving community contributes to the safety and well-being of children, and this money will help our efforts to strengthen our schools in the community.”

Tillman pledges to continue advocacy on behalf of the district.

“As Board President and a member of the board of education, I will remain a fierce advocate for securing additional money from Springfield to help our schools,” Tillman said. “I will fight for every dollar to improve our children’s education.”

Epic novel ‘Memphis’ Tells a Good Black Southern Story

Stringfellow always knew that she came from greatness. Her grandfather was the first Black detective in Memphis, Tenn. and her grandmother was the first Black nurse to work in the white hospital. She is a direct descendant of Hiram Revels, the first Black United States Senator.

“That pride that comes from Blackness was there at birth. I always knew that I would be a writer and that my family is great, but also like countless other Black families, we’ve always made this country great. Where are our monuments and where are the stories told about us? I didn’t think there were that many, so I decided to write one,” she said.

“Memphis” has been described as lyrical prose. The book, which was released in April of 2022, follows a family throughout the course of 70 years. Stringfellow’s family’s story serves as a background for the book, with fictional elements included. She believes all writing should be personal.

“I feel as though all of my writing should tell a good southern Black story and tell it well,” she said.

Stringfellow is an artist and an activist, as well as a storyteller. While she was attending Northwestern University, she connected with African American Studies Professor Dr. Tracy Vaughn-Manley. Vaughn-Manley, who Stringfellow described as “one of the best human beings God has ever made” taught her how to quilt. Stringfellow said there probably wouldn’t be a “Memphis” without Vaughn-Manley. In the book, there are ele-

ments of quilts and quilting in the story.

“It’s almost like paying homage to my Ancestors when I quilt. My grandmother also was a quilter, so I felt when I was learning how to quilt, I was getting more in touch with my own Ancestors. I just thought it was beautiful for the book. I had a poem and in one line of the poem, I said, ‘make your stitches as small and as tiny as the number of opportunities granted to the women who came before you. Quilting is a beautiful American and Black American, Southern tradition,” Stringfellow said.

Stringfellow acknowledged that quilts were used to show the routes for the Underground Railroad, with different colors and shapes serving as roadmaps for the enslaved. Quilting puts Stringfellow in touch with her grandmother and with those enslaved who escaped, as well as those who tried to escape and weren’t able to. While in Ghana as a student, Stringfellow learned the tribes in Ghana also quilt, each patch means something in the tribe’s history. Knowing that quilting is a West African tradition that Black Americans brought with them through the Middle Passage and was passed through generations makes Stringfellow feel Black and beautiful.

Stringfellow is editing her poetry collection, which will be released in 2024, called “Magic ENUFF.” She also has started writing the second novel. She is really grateful to everyone who has bought and read “Memphis”. It has meant the world to her.

HUNTER SUPPORTS THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, ACCESS TO ABORTION

Following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, State Senator Mattie Hunter proudly voted to protect abortion rights in Illinois through a measure that passed out of the Senate Wednesday.

“Abortion is a health care issue, and a medical service that could potentially save someone’s life, especially in regards to combatting maternal mortality,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “There are so many reasons abortions are needed, none of which is the government’s business. What is the government’s business, is protecting the right to have one.”

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found that under a nationwide total abortion ban, there could be a 24% increase in expected maternal deaths nationwide, with Black women projected to see a 39% increase.

If signed, House Bill 4664 will enshrine legal access to abortion care in the state of Illinois and provide protections for health care professionals from restrictive laws from other states. Illinois could become a safe haven for those who need abortion within the state, and in surrounding states in the Midwest.

Hunter has championed various health care issues over her two decades in the senate, including measures to reduce maternal mortality.

“Everyone deserves the right to choose what they do with their own body,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “I voted to ensure that here in Illinois, that right will remain for anyone who needs access to an abortion.”

The mixed reality technology is an immersive digital experience designed to improve the blood donation process, attract new donors and motivate a younger generation to give blood. The effort intends to address the global challenge of sustaining a reliable blood supply.

1 cup shredded collard greens, packed

1/4 cup frozen corn

1 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed

2/3 cup canned pumpkin puree

1 1/2 tablespoons taco seasoning

8 flour tortillas (6 inches each)

1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded

2 tablespoons olive oil sour cream, for dipping salsa, for dipping guacamole, for dipping fresh cilantro, for garnish

Prepare rice according to package directions; add collard greens and corn to water during last 5 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450 F. Drain rice and vegetables; transfer to saucepan. Stir in black beans, pumpkin puree and taco seasoning.

Spoon 1/3 cup rice mixture into center of one tortilla; sprinkle with 2 tablespoons Monterey Jack cheese. Roll up tightly. Place seam side down on parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining tortillas, filling and cheese. Brush taquitos with olive oil; sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Bake 10-15 minutes, or until tortillas are crisp and cheese is melted.

Serve taquitos with sour cream, salsa and guacamole for dipping. Garnish with fresh cilantro.

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 garlic cloves, chopped

1/2 cup onion, chopped

1 cup mushrooms, sliced

1 egg, lightly beaten

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

Prepare quinoa according to package directions.

Preheat oven to 375 F.

In large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add garlic and onions; saute 1 minute. Add mushrooms and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add spinach and stir until wilted, about 2 minutes. Stir in tomato sauce and keep warm.

In medium bowl, combine ricotta, egg, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning.

Place 1 cup sauce in bottom of 2-quart baking dish. Spread half of quinoa evenly over sauce. Top with half of ricotta mixture. Top with 1 cup sauce. Sprinkle with 1 cup mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake uncovered 30 minutes. Serve warm.
