LETTER FROM THE MAC RACE CHAIR
PRESENTED BY WINTRUST
After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the race cancellation in 2020, I am honored to welcome you back as we carry on this generations-old tradition and test our stamina, strategy and perseverance in the oldest annual freshwater race in the world.
It has been heartwarming to hear stories of competitors looking forward to this year’s edition and readying their boats. And I cannot wait to see each of you on the starting line, at the finish and, of course, on the island.
While the finish is the marker that will be written in the history books, and etched on our trophies, it is the journey to the finish that each of you will remember. The heavy winds and the lulls. Waking up in freshwater with no land in sight. Point Betsie and the Manitous, Gray’s Reef and the Mighty Mac. Since 1898, sailors, young and old, have tested themselves in these locations on this race and walked away with experiences that will last them a lifetime.
Whether this is your first Race to Mackinac or your 50th, I have no doubt you will do the same in 2021.
As we enjoy this moment, we thank all of those who have made it possible – our spouses and families, our race volunteers, the United States Coast Guard, our sponsors, the Chicago Yacht Club staff, the members of the Mackinac Committee and our competitors. Without them, there is no race. Thanks to my favorite crew, Diana, Caroline and Daniel for their support in this journey.
Sail safe, sail fast and welcome to the 112th Race to Mackinac!
Sincerely,
Martin Sandoval Chairman, 112th CYC Race to Mackinac
