The CYC Foundation was founded in 1990 as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt org. and 31 years later it’s mission remains “to promote an awareness and appreciation of the nautical arts and traditions to the Chicagoland community through education and activities, as well as through the support of like-minded charitable organizations.”
By engaging over 14 partners from different Associations, Clubs, and Schools, CYCF made it possible for over 800 youth participants from some of the most challenging areas of Chicago to find new passages to a world on the water that many thought were improbable due to financial or physical constraints. The Foundation has been powered by the generous support of our donors and many volunteers.
CYC Foundation Programs provide first time exposure to the water, ecology and sailing education:
After-School Education Program- Provides outreach to Chicago Youth, teaching them about the Great Lakes, commerce, careers, recreation, and ecology
Adventures Boating Week - Teaches boating skills
Sailing School Scholarships & Regatta Grants- Beginning/ building on skills learned. For many families scholarships and grants enable these sailors to participate
Rickover Naval Academy Sailing Team -City students, who have 100% college acceptance rate
Command of the Watch- Leadership training for young women aboard a Tallship
Chicago Maritime Arts Center-Teaching inner city kids marine ecology and boat building skills
Chicago Voyagers-Experiential adventures for Chicago’s at-risk youth to help them develop skills for successful lives
