Welcome to Chickenshed This year marks the 175th anniversary of the publication of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – probably the best loved Christmas story of all time. To present this wonderful “ghost” story in a newly imagined and fresh way we’ve set the story in London’s East End in the 1930s. By moving the story out of its Victorian origins, there are wonderful performance opportunities - not the least of which is the buzzy and exciting music that characterised that era. It was also a time when modern Britain was being defined, so instead of horses, we have motor cars; instead of top hats, we have flat caps; instead of paupers’ prisons, we have an unequal social benefit system. But in the end the story still exuberantly celebrates Christmas and all the goodwill that the season brings. This is A Christmas Carol as you’ve never seen it before, with more than a touch of traditional Chickenshed magic! But we haven’t given up the ghost of Victorian magic altogether, as we present a brand new musical version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde in our Studio Theatre. Directed by Chickenshed’s Jonny Morton, our famously diverse company will bring this melodrama to life through music, dance and riveting storytelling. Do you know who you really are? Are we all pretending to be someone who we aren’t? And can we truly tell the difference between the good and bad choices we make in life? Our Performances to Children programme also continues to “believe in the magic” as it enters its busiest season for families, with over a hundred performances of Tales from the Shed, Planet Play and Christmas Tales between September and January, from schools to theatre venues around London. There’s only one thing you need to bring – your imagination! This season also sees an unparalleled line-up of special one-off evenings with three of our wonderful celebrity supporters - Sir Derek Jacobi, Anthony Daniels and Jamie Raven - all appearing in our Rayne Theatre. So, don’t miss top notch entertainment with Chickenshed’s cutting edge inclusive philosophy at the forefront - book now for the best seats, and see you at the theatre! Lou Stein, Artistic Director

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson was first published in 1886, and depicts the constant struggle between the baser instincts and finer aspirations of mankind, offering a terrifying glimpse of what lurks beneath the surface when the persuasive but superficial trappings of civilisation are stripped away. Brilliantly exploring Stevenson’s themes of etiquette, respectability and hypocrisy, this production will explore the dark recesses of the psyche, and reflect the tale’s profound and subtle truths about what it means to be human – and how fragile the veneers of society may be.

Tue 2 Oct | 6.30pm (pre-show) Exactly how do you go about adapting a classic piece of literature for the stage - with songs? The creative team behind Chickenshed's Jekyll & Hyde discuss the artistic processes and challenges they encountered in crafting Robert Louis Stevenson's story into a piece of musical theatre.

A timeless tale - in a different time... Join Chickenshed for a magical and brilliantly uplifting retelling of the unforgettable story of Ebenezer Scrooge, that “squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner”. Follow his spooky encounters over the course of one incredible night, and his journey ultimately to become the friendly, charitable man who “knew how to keep Christmas well”. Charles Dickens’ classic story has arguably come to define Christmas in the 175 years since its publication, and there have been numerous memorable versions, both on stage and screen. Chickenshed has updated, renewed and refreshed this amazing and heartwarming tale for 2018 in an entirely brand new musical version, set in 1930s Britain. With a cast of over 200 people on stage for each performance, original music, stunning sets and incredible design, we guarantee an absolutely unforgettable festive theatre experience for young and old!
