Welcome to Chickenshed Welcome to Chickenshed’s performance offerings for spring 2019. The centrepiece is our large scale dance musical 100% Chance of Rain. Following the huge audience and critical success of our previous two spring shows, we continue to address important concerns of our time, seen through the eyes of our 150-strong cast. A big and urgent issue is again approached through stunning creative performance - expect spectacular dance and music, and heartwarming personal stories. The show will continue to show the true power of collective creativity, which is Chickenshed at its best. Another highlight of our performance programme is monolog 2. Last year’s celebration of new work received an ecstatic critical response. This spring our monologues will cover a broad spread of personal stories told in a multitude of riveting and expressive ways, presented in our new performance space, The Shed. You will almost be able to touch the power of explosive theatre in this intimate setting. Our Tales team is well known for its hugely entertaining performances for children. Excitingly, this term the team is also presenting the world premiere of The Tigon and the Liger, based on the best-selling book by Keilly Swift, and which the team has developed with the author. Our Children's and Youth Theatre membership has recently developed into the Young Company. Guided and led by our young people, their work continues to explore issues that matter to them. The Head of Young Company, Matthew Lyons, tells me, “By being guided by the voices that matter we will create space for our young people to develop a Young Company that is relevant, ground breaking and exciting - with its finger firmly on the pulse. Last summer's New Routes Festival began this journey, and emerging from that (L)able will continue this development.” This is an important point of change for the world around us. There are many challenges to a truly inclusive society. We at Chickenshed welcome the challenge and will continue to aim to empower young people through the power of true talent, creativity and artistry in performance. I hope to welcome you to Chickenshed very soon. You can be assured of great entertainment with a difference - the Chickenshed difference. Lou Stein, Artistic Director

A dazzling array of voices and perspectives combine to form monolog 2, our new selection of fresh writing from within the Chickenshed community.

l

Selected from a huge number of submissions, these pieces shine a light on individual stories and experiences - subjects of the monologues are hugely varied: a dystopian view of social media over-sharing taken to extremes; youth protest and activism; disability and artistic expression; a poetic and abstract reflection of what it might mean to bring a new life into the world; how it feels to live life on the margins, with only the most fragile of safety nets; life as a second generation immigrant in 21st century Britain; and the candid and honest experience of spending three years in prison. (There will be additional pieces popping up across the run.) Performed with minimal staging, and in an intimate space, monolog 2 will allow the simple and unique power of the written and spoken word to reveal some comic and tragic truths about living.

Audiences have been dazzled and moved by Blowin’ in the Wind and Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow, the shows that have been presented in our regular spring slot over the last two years. For 2019, Chickenshed will be building on these successes, and creating a brand new show. Combining music, movement and story, inspired and linked by the issues of mental health, this piece will yet again harness the incredible creativity and artistry within Chickenshed. Beautiful, inspiring and uplifting, 100% Chance of Rain will offer insights and reflections through this unique theatrical presentation. It is estimated that one in four people in the UK will experience mental health problems each year. 100% Chance of Rain will explore the individual and universal truths behind the statistics, and also offer the chance to reflect on our own experiences through the creative power of performance.

(L)able is a performative sharing of the Young Company’s explorations into the effect and power of labels, stereotypes and preconceptions. This piece considers how words can empower, identify, limit and separate, how societal norms manifest themselves in our judgements of others and whether we can, should or want to transcend our labels. Audiences will be encouraged to reflect on these provocations and be part of our discovery into how we navigate the use of labels in our everyday lives.
