Welcome to Chickenshed The headline of this summer’s season at Chickenshed is our continuing association with David Walliams, who has become a real ambassador for our work. David liked our production last year of the world premiere of his The Midnight Gang so much that he encouraged us to produce another of his works. And so this summer, his much-loved Mr Stink will be presented as our summer family show. The same production team will be behind it, including a brand new design by Keith Dunne, who gave us such a brilliant set last year. This year, I predict that tickets will again go fast for this major production based on one of the world’s most loved children’s writers - I can personally guarantee you that Mr Stink will be stonking good! Our bumper Summer Season also features a new offering from the Tales from the Shed team: Tales from the Thousand and One Nights. Already venues throughout London are queuing up to host this show for children aged 3-7, and you could be amongst the very first to experience this ‘feast of fantastic fables’. Developing the work of our Children's & Youth Theatre, we are also presenting New Routes, a festival created and produced by our young people, which will be a veritable cornucopia of performance treats ranging from newly devised work to a full-blown adaptation of the classic novel Stig of the Dump, which will actually have a wonderful resonance with our main house production Mr Stink - two important stories told through very different lenses. If you’ve not had an opportunity to experience (as an audience member) the work of our younger performers, then this festival will open the door to the wonderfully creative work that they do. And with more fantastic nights of live music and comedy throughout the summer months - including an extra special evening bringing together the fabulous Liane Carroll and the incredible Julian Marc Stringle for one 'Big Night of Jazz' - it is all set for a sizzling summer at Chickenshed. So why not join us for entertainment, conversations and the joy of experiencing the young and new! See you at the theatre! Lou Stein, Artistic Director

Three geese in a flock one flew east one flew west one flew over the cuckoo’s nest. Based on Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel, this powerful and affecting play by Dale Wasserman concerns Randall Patrick McMurphy who agrees to be committed to an asylum for mental assessment, rather than spend another spell in jail. His rebellious instincts throw him into constant conflict with the hospital authorities, and as he attempts to help the other patients take control of their lives, he comes to a devastating discovery of where true power lies. Also adapted into a hugely significant film in 1975 (with Jack Nicholson as a charismatic McMurphy), Chickenshed’s fresh new interpretation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest will be a physical and thrilling version of this moving and touching story.

The very kind, but lonely, 12-year-old Chloe invites the homeless ‘Mr Stink’ and his dog to leave behind the wooden bench where they have taken up residence and secretly move into her family’s shed. Matters become more complicated when Chloe’s mother - who has unfulfilled political ambitions - tries to take credit for Chloe’s generosity. And precisely who is Mr Stink, anyway?

About David Walliams David Walliams has revolutionised reading for children and has become one of the most influential writers today. 2018 celebrates the tenth anniversary of his children’s fiction, which began with The Boy in the Dress (2008), illustrated by the iconic Sir Quentin Blake. Since then, his global book sales have exceeded 23 million copies in 53 languages. In 2017, David became the first children’s writer to spend 100 weeks (non-consecutive) at number one in the children’s charts, he topped the Sunday Times bestseller charts four times, and secured the coveted Christmas number one - a spot David has secured for the last three years running! With a canon of ten chart-busting novels, two shortstory collections and five hilarious picture books, David Walliams has cemented his place as one of the most important children’s authors of our time. The Guardian recently hailed him “as important to the market as any Booker prize-winner and heir to the Rowling crown”.
