Welcome to Chickenshed
from the Artistic Director - Lou Stein I’m extremely excited to share this brochure with you, the first since I became Artistic Director of this amazing organisation in April. My ambitions for our company are very clear – for Chickenshed to be recognised as a confident, and highly skilled professional theatre company at the heart of London’s theatre consciousness, creating unmissable work. The new season includes our dramatic and stylish production of the moving play Kindertransport by Diane Samuels, which will be presented in our intimate Studio Theatre. This tender story of a young Jewish girl torn from her family in pre-war Germany to live in England as part of the life-saving Kindertransport programme resonates with current ethical questions regarding children in war-torn regions. Part of my vision for Chickenshed is for our young people in our Outreach, Youth Theatre, and Education programmes to be involved in all of our main house and studio productions and they will be delivering a contemporary response to Kindertransport through short devised performances throughout the run. This is a new initiative and I look forward to hearing their take on the issues which Kindertransport raises. I’m especially pleased to be a part of the world premiere of Adventure to Oz, our Christmas show and brand new musical set in the wonderful world of L. Frank Baum. The magic, joy and sheer thrill of a brilliant story, filtered through the amazing ‘Chickenshed lens’ by the fantastic team here, involves most of our 600 members and artistic staff. We cannot wait to share it with you! Finally, my son Ethan who is a young Chickenshed member and a huge fan of Tales from the Shed won’t forgive me if I don’t highlight these brilliant performances here – and indeed elsewhere (check out our website for performances at Wilton’s Music Hall, The Old Vic, the South Bank and more!). If you have young children in your life, this truly is their greatest introduction to live theatre. With live music in the bar, theatre classes for all ages, Community Choir and the chance to run the London Marathon, I am proud to sign off the brochure with the traditional “there really is something for everyone”! I look forward to welcoming you to Chickenshed very soon, and indeed over the coming years as we move into this exciting next phase of our work.

On the brink of World War II, nine-year-old Eva is sent to Britain for refuge from Nazi Europe, with little more than a suitcase and an identity label, one of 10,000 children evacuated in a rescue mission called the Kindertransport. Eva is taken in and raised by a well-meaning English woman. Torn between her German heritage and her need to wipe the Kindertransport experience from her memory, Eva eventually learns to adapt to her new life and identity.

Kindertransport moves seamlessly between different time periods, as Eva confronts the painful past which was chosen for her and its consequences, and we discover whether she is ever to be reunited with the family she was forced to leave behind. Her story is based on autobiographical accounts from actual Kindertransport children.

Frank Baum - Adventure to Oz! The show will be a mammoth undertaking and a true theatrical spectacle, created by our new Artistic Director, Lou Stein – and we absolutely cannot wait to share it with audiences! Our huge and diverse cast continually wows and entrances audiences and includes hundreds of children, young people and adults all working together to create a theatrical extravaganza. This production will brilliantly demonstrate our continued desire to reflect and include our entire community. This will be a show of incredible scale – if you’ve seen a Chickenshed Christmas show before, expect to be even more dazzled and amazed.
