Welcome to Chickenshed At Chickenshed during the Autumn, almost every part of the building is taken up with preparation for the Christmas Show, but there is also so much work that takes place before this season begins. In April, our Head of Creative Development Dave Carey starts drafting the script and music, discussions begin with the director and production team about the set design and costumes, and the lead roles are cast. In September, rehearsals begin with more than 800 people taking part in this incredible community collaboration. The show features Chickenshed performing arts students and members of our children’s, youth and adult workshops who are split across four rota groups. The main cast, who are members of our professional theatre company, rehearse across all rota groups and as each group rehearses separately (and sometimes simultaneously) in different parts of the building, the whole show is overseen by director Louise Perry. Every year we challenge ourselves to do something new to make our Christmas Show even more special. This year we are overjoyed to be joined by Adrian Smith, a set designer from Barcelona, who will be working alongside our costume designer Graham Hollick to create a set that uses projection and lighting in a very imaginative and creative way. We cannot wait to share Sleeping Beauty – Dream On with you! We are also very pleased to introduce a new production to the Studio Theatre this Autumn. Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! by Dario Fo is a riotously funny play that has been a huge hit with West End audiences over the years. We know that this farcical and topical show will resonate with our audience and be a really entertaining night out. Excitingly, around the same time, we will also be transferring our successful show The Rain That Washes to the Leicester Square Theatre. These are two very different shows, but they both share Chickenshed’s ethos and spirit. Finally, if you have children under the age of 7 and are looking for a festive treat, we highly recommend Christmas Tales – our sell-out show that takes place in the Rayne Theatre. It’s funny, silly and joyous. Your kids will love it and you will too. We also have fantastic workshops for children and adults right through the Autumn term and music and comedy events (Richard Herring is an absolute must-see!)
To book visit www.leicestersquaretheatre.com or call 08448 733433 Sign Interpreted: Thu 27 Sep 7pm One man’s epic journey growing up through Zimbabwe’s turbulent times. Following its successful run in the Studio Theatre at Chickenshed in May, this unbelievably moving story is now playing in the West End. Instantly plunged into a young man’s compelling story of growing up in turbulent Zimbabwe, we live and breathe his extraordinary and dramatic journey from innocence to escape, finally returning to his homeland to witness the greatest betrayal of all... Inspired by a series of interviews between Zimbabwean Christopher Maphosa and writer Dave Carey, who first met at Chickenshed more than 12 years ago, The Rain That Washes is a true story that is poignant, political and, most of all, personal. This beautifully realised one-man show effortlessly shifts between different times, places and characters and builds to an unforgettable climax.

Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! by Dario Fo translated by Lino Pertile and adapted by Bill Colvill and Robert Walker Dario Fo’s classic riotous comedy Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! offers the perfect antidote in these uncertain financial times. When a group of women take part in an unplanned ‘supermarket sweep’ in protest at ever-rising prices, the ensuing chaos spirals hysterically out of control as they seek to evade the long arm (and strangely familiar face) of the law, and at the same time allay their husbands’ suspicions... Fast and furious, frantic and farcical, Dario Fo has created a political fable that remains as relevant today as ever. When combined with Chickenshed’s characteristic energy and verve, this will be an unforgettable piece of theatre for our times.
