Welcome to Chickenshed As I prepare to begin my second year as Artistic Director of this amazing theatre company, I could not be more pleased to share details of our exciting new season with you - a season built around the theme of Friends and Celebration. There are so many new developments, I hardly know where to begin – but I’m particularly pleased to announce the world stage premiere of The Midnight Gang, based on last year’s number one bestseller by David Walliams! This is a new venture for Chickenshed, offering a family show in the summer for children aged 6+ and their families. This means that with our Tales from the Shed shows continuing to delight our very youngest audiences (and also presenting Planet Play and The Jumble Book in this summer season), the addition of such a high profile production as The Midnight Gang into our programme means that Chickenshed is set to become the ‘go to’ venue for all family theatre in the area! But that’s not all – this season we will also be offering a variety of ‘Midsummer Pop Up Performances’ around the building. Featuring theatre pieces, spoken word, poetry, dance and a whole range of other surprising and unexpected performances – produced by Chickenshed and also other visiting companies and performers - this will be taking place around the building from 27 June to 2 July! (More details of this new venture will be announced very shortly.) Throughout the season we will also have our hugely popular Comedy, Jazz, Blues and musical nights hosted by the amazing Jo Collins – plus our Students and Members will all be presenting their end of term productions. Still not satisfied? Well, on Monday 26 June we’ll also be presenting an absolutely monumental and unforgettable production - for one night only - at The Royal Albert Hall. Dreams of Freedom features over 600 children on stage, and is the culmination of over a year’s work with many different schools around London, and is presented in partnership with Amnesty International UK, continuing our efforts to work with outside partners who are sympathetic to our aims. We hope that all friends, new and old, will join us in celebrating all that is happening at Chickenshed and I very much hope to see you soon. Lou Stein, Artistic Director

Refugee Boy brilliantly continues Chickenshed’s exploration of the issues surrounding refugees and immigration, as recently examined so powerfully in the sell-out run of Kindertransport.

The story follows Alem’s experiences in London in a warm-hearted tale of hope, family and identity. For Alem, the challenge is fitting in and growing up in a country very different from his own, and being there without the family he loves.

Wed 26 Thu 27

Benjamin Zephaniah is a much-loved and celebrated British Jamaican poet, who has featured in The Times list of Britain’s top 50 post-war writers. Refugee Boy is a powerful and moving story based on his acclaimed book, and tells the story of 14 year old Alem, a refugee forced to flee his family and country for London in the late 1990s, to escape civil war at home in the disputed region between Ethiopia and Eritrea. As a child of parents from two regions, Alem is in great danger from both sides, and is forced to seek safety alone in the UK.

Dreams of Freedom Mon 26 June Royal Albert Hall 7pm Tickets £10 - £25 available from the Royal Albert Hall Box Office 020 7589 8212 www.royalalberthall.com/ dreamsfreedom

To achieve great things, we must dream as well as do. Anatole France On Monday 26 June Chickenshed will be staging a powerful and inspirational celebration of children’s hopes for the future in a truly monumental performance at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Inspired by Amnesty International UK’s illustrated children’s book of the same name, Dreams of Freedom will be the culmination of a project lasting more than a year, gathering children’s thoughts, opinions, ideas and dreams of freedom into a musical, theatrical and visual extravaganza presenting an unforgettable celebration of human rights for everyone. Bringing together hundreds of children from many different state, independent and SEN schools, as well as Chickenshed’s Children Theatre members (from both our Kensington & Chelsea and Southgate bases), and backed by Triborough Music Hub’s 100-strong Young Singers Choir, Dreams of Freedom will offer a kaleidoscope of music, movement and song giving voice to children’s hopes for a better world. With original music and lyrics, Dreams of Freedom will be a wonderfully life-affirming glimpse of a world that could be, if we are ready to listen and dare to dream. It’s going to be a truly spectacular celebration of freedom with over 600 children performing, and we very much hope to see you there!

The Midnight Gang Wed 19 Jul – Sun 6 Aug

When the clock strikes midnight most children are fast asleep, but for the Midnight Gang the journey is just beginning.

Rayne Theatre Ages 6+

Five children find themselves in hospital for a variety of reasons, including Tom who’s been hit on the head by a cricket ball and really doesn’t want to go back to school. They soon discover that something far more exciting is happening beyond the confines of the children’s ward. A heart-warming and hilarious tale of fun, friendship and adventure ensues, all under the cover of darkness when the horrible matron is sure they are all fast asleep.

Writer David Walliams has already created an amazingly rich collection of children’s fiction, and is rightly seen by many as the natural successor and inheritor of Roald Dahl’s off-beat and wacky world of subversive and anarchic stories for children. Since making his debut into the world of children’s literature in 2008, David Walliams has celebrated exceptional success. His global sales total over 17 million copies and his work has been translated into over 53 languages. Last year, The Midnight Gang, went straight to No. 1 in the overall book charts and remained there for seven weeks. It was the industry’s biggest selling book for Christmas and was the Christmas No. 1 making it the first children’s No. 1 since J K Rowling in 2008.

The Jumble Book Planet Play Thu 27, Fri 28 Jul, Thu 3, Fri 4 Aug 10am Studio Theatre (50 mins)

Inspired by the stories of Rudyard 3-6yrs Kipling’s much loved The Jungle Book, and the animals that live within it, join the Tales team for their brilliant new summer show as they weave their story magic to create an unforgettable and magical theatrical experience. From the apparent chaos of charity shop, an astounding array of discarded bric-a-brac, pieces of art, found items and just plain junk are magically brought to life, emerging from the tables on which they lie, each with its own tale to tell. Using puppetry, live projection, movement and the power of the children’s imaginations, The Jumble Book will fill you with wonder whilst timeless stories transport you to another world – a world where a man cub can be raised by wild animals, and where true friends will always have time to play.

0-3yrs Especially recommended for very young children, join the Tales team for a fun and interactive sensory session based on the themes and characters from The Jumble Book. This will be a brilliant and immersive opportunity for children to really get involved in true Tales from the Shed fashion!
