Daily News… CAMPAIGN MOCKS BRITISH STEREOTYPES OF ROMANIANS A Romanian online daily has decided to poke fun at British fears of a Romanian invasion if labour market restrictions are lifted as scheduled in January 2014. Responding to calls by British media for Romanians and Bulgarians to stay home, the daily Gandul.info invited Britons to visit Romania, where «Prince Charles bought a house in 2005 and (where) Harry has not been photographed naked once.» Editorial director Claudiu Pandaru told AFP on Tuesday: «Our aim is not to offend anyone but to put Romanians and Britons in direct contact, leaving politicians who have their own agendas aside. «The reactions have been very positive,» he said. The campaign called «Why don’t you come over?» plays up the beauty of Romanian women, «half of whom resemble Kate (Middleton), the other half her sister,» and the local price of draught beer, which costs less than bottled water in Britain. A poster shown on the www.whydontyoucomeover.co.uk website took a light-hearted swipe at British airport chaos following a snowfall in late January. «Our air traffic controllers have already seen snow,» it said. «They were unimpressed.» In another bid to help Britons travel to Romania, the daily and its partner GMP Advertising have set up a «couch surfing community», inviting readers to open their homes to British tourists. «We have received more than 300 offers in less than 24 hours,» Pandaru said. Romanian President Traian Basescu has also tried to allay fears, arguing recently that «Romanians will not invade Great Britain because Romania is a very beautiful country.» Romania and Bulgaria’s EU accession treaty allowed member states to limit access by citizens from the two countries to labour markets until January 2014. Britain is one of the EU members that took advantage of the opportunity. Some three million Romanians have emigrated over the past few years in search of better paid jobs, but most go to Spain and Italy.

International News… FRENCH ‘SPIDER-MAN’ IN CUBA French «Spider-Man» Alain Robert on Monday scaled the facade of the iconic Hotel Havana Libre in the Cuban capital, in what he said was a show of support for revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. «Climbing is a way to discover a country, a culture,» the French daredevil said before completing the feat, his first in Cuba. «This is a strong sign of support for Fidel Castro.» When asked if he would meet Castro while in Havana, Robert said: «I don’t know if he’ll be calling me this afternoon.» Police stopped traffic while Robert completed the feat.
RICHARD III’S FACE REVEALED The face of England’s much-maligned king Richard III was revealed for the first time in 500 years following a reconstruction of his skeleton which was found buried underneath a car park. The three-dimensional plastic model is based on a CT scan of the skull of the king, who was killed in battle in 1485 after just two years on the throne but lived on as one of history’s worst villains in the eponymous play by William Shakespeare. «It’s an interesting face, younger and fuller than we have been used to seeing, less careworn, and with the hint of a smile,» said chairman of the Richard III Society.
