Daily News… WE NEED TO PULL TOGETHER TO SAVE OCEANS : KERRY US Secretary of State John Kerry warned royalty, corporate kings and environmental warriors Tuesday that governments won’t save the seas without «significant impetus» from every sphere of society. Kerry’s comments came via video link to a large gathering at scenic Half Moon Bay, California that has brought together countries big and small to find ways to prevent oceans from being destroyed by a rapacious global appetite for food and resources. «We don?t yet have the political consensus or the urgency translated into political action,» Kerry said during a video chat that kicked off the World Ocean Summit, organized by The Economist. «And we know that there?s no way that governments are going to tackle this enormous challenge, frankly, without significant impetus from the private sector, the NGO community, academia, media and others.» A note struck time and again at the meeting, which continues through Wednesday, was the need to translate the destruction of seas and marine life into economic values that everyone, from world leaders to fishermen, can take to heart. «Every human on Earth depends on the oceans for the food we eat and the air we breathe,» Kerry said. «The environmental reasons for protecting the planet’s oceans should be leaping out at people.» Monaco’s Prince Albert II, who took part in a panel discussion, said that «preservation of the environment cannot be accomplished against human wishes. «It can only work with a sustainable model recognizing the goals of humanity and the requirements of nature.» Those attending the summit are well versed in disastrous threats facing the seas, from overfishing to dead zones where pollution makes any form of life impossible. However, a casual poll showed participants were broadly optimistic these problems could be beaten.

International News… BABY ON MANHATTAN SIDEWALK When a New York woman went into labor, she left home to hail a cab for the hospital. But seconds later, she gave birth on a wintry Manhattan sidewalk. Starting out as a true New Yorker in a hurry, the baby girl was in such a rush to enter the world that she couldn’t wait for her mother to get to the hospital. Also in New York style, it happened in front of a TV crew from Fox 5, who were en route to another story when they spotted the woman on Third Avenue and East 68th Street. «She was like ‘oh my God the baby’s coming’ and then I could see the baby’s head coming out,» one passer-by told Fox 5.
BABY ON MANHATTAN SIDEWALK A California couple out walking their dog struck it rich by unearthing a horde of buried gold coins, worth more than $10 million. The so-called Saddle Ridge find is believed to be the most valuable treasure trove ever discovered in the United States. The couple, named only as John and Mary, spotted a partially buried can jutting out of the ground -- and after further digging found seven more, with more than 1,400 gold coins. «This family literally found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,» said company boss Donald Kagin, adding that most of the coins date from the late 19th century.
