1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 PROLOGUE With great pleasure, I would like to express my gratitude to the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Buildings for accepting me to carry out my internship with them. I would like to specially thank Ar. A. Kapulula and Ar C. Lindeire for giving me the opportunity to learn and practice under their supervision. I would also want to thank the staff at Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Buildings as they helped me along my internship in various expects. I also express my gratitude to my tutor Mr. Prince Favis Isip for tutoring and assessment of this short semester. Thank you very much as I would have not completed my internship without any of those mentioned above.
1.2 INTERNSHIP TRAINING AND REPORT This short semester is for internship training and report. It is for students to get the feel of the profession as it prepares and equips us with all the necessary knowledge and skills required for working in the industry. It provides us with a platform where we are exposed to various aspects in relation to the construction industry by being involved in real life projects which requires certain regulations and procedures . We can further equip ourselves with more experience for our remaining semester which will set a clear guideline of proper drawing techniques and stronger designs. For my internship training was done back in my home country Malawi at the Ministry of Transport and Public Works. This company is a government owned so most of the projects are

3.0 PROJECTS 3.1 SMEDI This project was about a company wanting to build a headquarters for themselves. I found this project almost at the end and was tasked to sections and door and window schedules.
Figure 3.1.1 Drawing sections This was hard because I so used to Revit and not AutoCAD but I managed to push through and draw the section as best I could. This also helped me to know what software the company used and gave me time to learn and build my 10
AutoCAD skills. This project taught me how to prepare documents for the prepare and finalise detailed drawings for BQ preparation.
Figure 3.1.2 Door and Window schedules This project was a little challenge because I was also trying to familiar myself with the company and to see how things work. I had a hard time with the door schedule because of the ironmongery and it was my first time do an actual window and door schedule. But with the help of my co-workers I got the hang of work flow and how to do the schedules correctly. 11
3.2 MZUZU VOCATIONAL CENTER This is a project for the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare. They want to constructor a handcraft learning centre for the disability. The client did not have a site yet but wanted to see schematic drawings to give them an idea of how much land they would need.

Image 3.2.3 the client’s ideas The client had ideas of how they wanted the learning centre to look and brought their own precedent studies of another institution that had long corridors and spacey workshops and classrooms. In a group of 3 under Ar. Lindeire we brainstormed the best layout for the project and divided the tasks. I was tasked with the admin, conference hall and library which was one block.

Image 3.2.4 Client meeting At the client meeting they liked the layout of the centre but wanted to add a couple of things to the plan. These where clinic, staff houses, gym, shop outlet, tuckshop, maintenance with a storage unit and extra offices. This took us back to drawing board to add everything without changing the already liked layout as they wanted to keep the layout. We added an extra access point for resident only that leads into the staff housing and continued the main road to keep the ring road concept and added everything else around it.

I enjoyed this project as I got to work other people like fellow Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Structures and M&E colleagues in the company. The project taught me how the process works and the how documents must be shared and the need to work efficiently to meet deadlines, also the important job an architect has. This project helped to take more pride in the work I do and to fight my timid character.

3.3 NOCMA This project was to do the interiors of a small laboratory and cafĂŠ kitchen for the client NOCMA (National Oil Company of Malawi). I was to do the interiors, annotations of materials, renders and PowerPoint presentation of the project for the client meeting, so that they would have an idea on how it would look like.

Figure 3.3.5 CafĂŠ interior renders This project let me brush up my Sketchup skills as I am very used to using Revit. It took me a while to get the renders because the rendering software the company uses is different than than what I use so I have to learn to use Keyshot and Lumion. I must say it was a good project to help in cause I got to learn new software that I can use next semester for rendering.

3.4 BLANTYRE INTERNATIONAL STADIUM
Figure 3.4.1 Site Plan Tracing This project we were a group of 5 to come up with a football stadium proposal. I was first tasked with site plan tracing before we could start. After we had a group discussion with Ar. Lindeire to find the best position for the stadium . I was tasked to do the landscape layout but that is still on going because trying to get the ingress and egress of the project is a bit challenge because I also must take the site in consideration. I also must come up with parking lot layout and the positioning of the open football, basket, netball, tennis courts.

Figure 3.4.2 Landscaping layout This project is very interesting because it a big project and I have never done most of the things here like parking lot layout design which is new to me and I am learning all the regulations when it comes to such things. This project has shown me how much site analysis is when it comes to project and to take more seriously in my own designs.

4. C0NCLUSION Taking everything into account, this short semester: Internship, Training and Report has prepared me in different perspectives where I have gained knowledge on the requirements, rules and regulations as well as building specifications of real projects that must be applied in Malawi. I can experience the lifestyle of a working architect which varies from the studies at Taylor’s University. All through this whole internship, I have been exposed to projects from various classifications; from formal to recreational. I was able to increase my technical skills and working speed which will help in my further semester and later in the industry. Aside from the technical knowledge and skills, I was able to gain the experience from working with my colleagues. One of the fundamental was communication is the way to everything. As I was able to work alongside them and learn from them in many ways. I was able to learn many common standard requirements in designing a building for example; headroom space, set backs from each side of boundary lines and many more. This also helped me to learn how the construction industry works in my country and how it varies either different or similar to the construction industry in Malaysia. As mentioned above, I was able to gain the experience of working under two chief architects where all requirements are to be fullfed and completed in a certain time with an expected quality of work. hence, I have practiced producing the best work that I could in the provided amount of time which trains my thinking skills and decision making. this has also improved my confidence in the work that I do. I am that I could get an opportunity to be exposed to all kinds of projects. I have gained more than I expected I would have this short semester where all knowledge and skill learnt will be very useful and beneficial in the future of my architecture journey.
