ON THE COVER McCormick Gallery - Ten Years in the West Loop In 1999 gallery owner Tom McCormick was working from a cute but small boutique space next door to his Bucktown home. His commute to work (across his garden) was enviable, but with an eye towards producing more ambitious exhibitions he began snooping around the West Loop neighborhood, then promising to become the next gallery district.

McCormick was hoping to find the perfect building to buy, and he struck gold when he was asked to become a partner at 835 W. Washington Boulevard.

After a year of hard work and renovation, the building, with its four large galleries, opened in May of 2000.

The timing could not have been better. McCormick was on the verge of expanding his representation of artists’ estates from the abstract expressionist era, and the large, energetic canvases from the 1950s were shown to their best advantage in his 4,000 square foot space. The gallery also diversified its representation of contemporary artists, offering them opportunities for painting, sculpture and installation projects. Over the past decade the McCormick Gallery has successfully pursued this dual program of exhibiting historic Modern works of art alongside new creations by younger contemporary artists.

The gallery’s two exhibitions slated to run between April and August perfectly illustrate this programmatic niche. From April 17 through June 5 look for Early Spring – Works from the Estate of Lynne Drexler. With a catalog essay by Susan Danly, Curator at the Portland (Maine) Museum of Art, the exhibit explores the paintings of this New York School expatriate. After participating in the 1950s and 60s with the Abstract Expressionists, she abandoned Manhattan for the isolation of Maine’s Monhegan Island, and since her death her work is just now coming back into public view.

Running at the gallery from June 19 through August 13 will be Well Put Together 2, a wide ranging presentation of work (both Modern and contemporary) by a variety of artists working in the discipline of collage. The first incarnation of this exhibit focusing on Abstract Expressionism was presented at the gallery six years ago.

McCormick and his gallery director, Mary Beyer, will also be showing at ART CHICAGO at the Merchandise Mart from April 30th to May 3rd. The gallery has participated in this annual exposition every year since 1984.

News - What’s Happening Letter from the Publisher I know I’m not the only person who knows that bigger doesn’t always mean better, and more isn’t always greater. We’re proud of each issue of Chicago Gallery News because of the many galleries, artists, cultural institutions, and art world personalities we showcase. No other city in the United States has a publication like CGN, and to brag a bit, that’s because most other art communities do not equal ours in scale or scope.

Since CGN was founded in 1983, the magazine has grown along with Chicago’s art world. What began as a simple pamphlet became a glossy, 8 x 10” publication with more than 50 pages per issue.

During the past year, we’ve started to adjust the content of our pages after aiming to streamline our information for overall clarity, and we’ve moved some content exclusively online for a few reasons, including conservation sensibilities, and the significant, steady traffic growth on our website.

Regularly evaluating what to share with readers helps us stay on top of our mission – to make the art world engaging, approachable, and comprehensible.

Holding a well-crafted resource in your hands means discovering new information just by turning a page. Chicago is an endless source of inspiration for CGN, but there’s a great deal of information out there, and we know that a focused guide is invaluable when navigating the art world. CGN readers benefit from our history and experience while taking advantage of new technology and resources.

Since early 2009, when we dove headfirst into Twitter and Facebook, and eventually blogging, the world of social networking has been quite an adventure for us. We enjoy the instant updates and interacting with our local art friends and enthusiasts.

However, with all these new channels come new sources of information excess. Overload is everywhere online, but it’s also prevalent in the real world: at an art fair, in a museum, or on a big gallery opening night.

Along with wanting to do it all, personally, I’ve realized that I can’t, though we all wish we had about 6 more hours in our day. When exploring the art world, by slowing down to a reasonable pace, we can talk to artists, dealers and friends at openings.

At art fairs, I no longer try to see it all just to say I did – I’d forget which booth was where, and I might not remember the name of the artist I said hi to. If I make it to 30 gallery openings in 3 districts in one night, I probably don’t remember what I saw, so I visit 5-10 and go to the rest over a couple of weekends.

I plan ahead, but not enough to eliminate the fun of spontaneous discovery. I see what I want, and slow down when I see something good. That’s the only way I can remember to tell someone else about it.

This season, we can all slow down and enjoy summer in Chicago as long as possible.

This current issue has such a long shelf life, so we try not to sound too dated when we put together our news section. But, because of the nature of a print magazine, we do have to do a quite a bit of advance planning, which starts just after the new year. The upshot is that we get an early picture of what the whole year is shaping up to be, and planning the “warm weather” issue is a lot of fun because of what we get to look forward to ourselves and share with you.

We’re pleased to present a solid line-up of gallery openings, special events, and stellar musuem exhibitions, as well as, of course, the major spring art fairs that begin at the end of April. Everyone likes our interview series so much that we’ve given each guest more space in order to share valuable insights and advice, as well as humor. As always, there’s more to come and much to enjoy!

Art, Antiques, and Jelly Wrestlers... Oh My! The best seasons in Chicago can be short, so while spring is here, jump into the art scene first at the Merchandise Mart for art fair weekend, April 30-May 3, 2010. Art Chicago + NEXT Art Chicago showcases a stellar roster of international galleries, including a couple exciting returnees who have been absent the past couple of years.

Building on past successes, some special exhibitions return to the contemporary fairs. The role that Partisan plays has only grown. Highlighting works that explore social and political ideas, and culled from Art Chicago & NEXT galleries by curators Rachel Furnari & Karsten Lund, 2010’s Partisan revisits the impact of politically-motivated art, while raising the possibility of finding diverse forms of political meaning where they are least expected.

NEXT features work from both commercial & non-commercial arts organizations: galleries, project spaces, art publications and highly-regarded private contemporary collections, while also offering the always popular jelly-wrestling matches...

Aside from the fabulous opening night parties & the delightfully overstimulating amount of art on the show floors, some key programming makes up the core of the fairs’ real offerings for visitors & partic16

ipants. Be sure to sit-in on some expert “NEXT Talks Shop” & “Art Chicago Speaks” panels as well as visit some unique, curated exhibitions and projects.

Goffo returns to NEXT with its focus on multiples, editions, artist books, prints & handmade objects. For 2010 Goffo hosts an exceptional selection of presses, artist collectives & small galleries, curated with Chicago’s Swimming Pool Project Space.

Saturday, May 1: Gallery Night This is a weekend devoted to art, so you might as well go all out & do a few laps around our own galleries on Saturday, May 1. Dozens of galleries will stay open late, & Chicago Gallery News & Art Chicago are sponsoring free trolleys (an art fan’s favorite mode of transportation) Saturday night between the Mart, River North & the West Loop / Fulton Market.

Details will be in CGN’s April e-blasts & on our website before the fair.

The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair Chicagoans are spoiled by having a firstrate antiques fair that takes place twice a year, once in the fall, & also in the spring during Art Chicago and NEXT. The spring version offers a historically stimulating change of pace from the contemporary work on the other floors. Visitors will do well to use an eagle eye to spot unusual finds among the volume of antiques, decorative items, furniture, & accessories. An extra bonus - unique finds for truly all budgets may be found.

Hundreds of experts under one roof are more than happy to share their knowledge with curious visitors, and it’s the best way to get an education, particularly when it comes to antiques.

Artist Insights This series focuses on that creative force behind everything in our art community: the artist. Thomas Masters spoke with Jeremiah Ketner about working on a piece inspired by a popular TV show, the ever-changing benefits of managing a social networking presence in the art world, and having a laid-back attitude towards his work. as I feel it becomes too contrived, & I like the idea of keeping the story open ended. I am not sure what my style is, but I do like to keep a tangible reality out of the picture. I try not to push a certain style or direction. Most of the paintings evolve from one to the next.

How long have you been making art?

Currently I am 35 years old, and my artist career began at the early age of 12 when I became extremely interested in painting & drawing. Since then I’ve exhibited my artwork in galleries across the U.S., as well as internationally.

Will you explain for us the meaning of your series on your website, Into the Mystic?

That body of work was made for a show exhibited at 1988 Gallery in San Francisco, & the director chose the title. It was a group show, & the artists I exhibited with made paintings in a similar genre. The underlying concept in my paintings focuses on mysterious & ambiguous feeling with a fairytale-like atmosphere. I wanted to play with themes such as mermaids, sea creatures & anthropomorphic characters.

Please talk about the influences in your work. Would it be safe to say that Takashi Murakami is one of them?

I really enjoy the work of Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara & started studying their works in the early 2000s when they were doing the Superflat shows in North America. That influenced me & began my exploration in characterbased work. In grad school I was doing more pop paintings - some abstract & some figurative - & also making robotic kinetic art, so it was almost like branching out & doing something completely different, working in a style I was not used to working in. I think you make stronger work when you’re not comfortable with what you’re making, so that’s something I try to push not being completely comfortable with what I’m doing, so it doesn’t become monotonous & formulaic.

I’m also inspired a lot by pre-Raphaelite painters like Gustvav Klimt. Klimt used a lot of floral patterns & decorative vines; I like how he incorporated those into a very Modernist, flat, simplified study of nature.

You say in your statement that you “like to make pretty paintings.” Why? Yes, this statement is from my Twitter profile. I think carefree & dreamy is the approach I take when addressing my concept. I don’t like to claim a certain notion or agenda in my artwork,

Tell us about your group show in Los Angeles, Year of the Tiger.

I was pleased to be part of The Year of the Tiger at Giant Robot 2 in L.A. Artists were asked to create a piece dedicated to one of the most powerful & sensitive animals in the Chinese zodiac. I found making a Zodiac theme painting very interesting to research & explore. This inspired me to make not only one but two paintings that focused on a playful tiger.

What is it about LOST (the television show) that inspired you to make work about the program?

I was asked to be part of The Lost Underground Art Show at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles & immediately jumped on the opportunity. I am not sure what inspired me but being a fairly new LOST fan, I was very excited to participate in such a highly anticipated art show. The show was produced by Ronnie Midfew Arts & DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com. Over 20 artists created original LOST-inspired paintings and sculptures. Fans of the TV show camped outside the gallery overnight just to be the first in the door to check out the event.

How important, or necessary, is social networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) for a young artist?

Very important. It’s not necessary but it can be extremely beneficial. I have been actively using Twitter to promote my art, & it has proven to be highly successful. Some of my artist friends have been using social networks to promote their work & have found the same level of success. You quickly get a sense of who your fans are & can also gain new collectors. I have had much success selling artwork through these networks & have also received invites for group shows & other projects. It’s also a great way to view the latest project an artist is working on. I view Twitter as the pulse, the nervous system, & the brains of social networking. I also use Facebook, Flickr, Friend Feed, Google Buzz, & Society6, as well as my blog, to get my word out often.

Do you consider yourself a “fine artist?”

Certainly. I am a working, living & breathing artist making art everyday. I keep a busy schedule, often working in the studio until 3 am nightly. I think it’s important to keep myself working in the creative environment. In fact if I did not have a day job, I would be working nonstop. I also regularly show my work at galleries year round.

I love knowing that it’s in the public view or hanging proudly in someone’s home. Everyone interprets my work differently, & I enjoy this type of dialogue.

What do you love about art, and what do you hate about art?

I love almost everything about art. It’s embedded in me. The thing I love most about art is the diversity that artists bring to our world. There are so many different ways to interpret one’s work.

Also, simply being inspired by a visit to a gallery, museum or public space is such a great and valuable asset. I wish everyone in Chicago would take advantage of the powerful art scene Chicago offers. I would have to say that I hate nothing about art. It can be ugly at times - or highly provocative - but I feel these things are important to get the artist’s message out.

Since I am looking at things from an artist’s perspective, I often wonder what other people think of when they’re living with, viewing, or experiencing works of art.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

Alive! Ha ha! Reaching greater plateaus, such as a museum exhibition - that would truly be the ultimate achievement. If it happens 10, 20, or 50 years from now, that would be great. Ultimately though, I want to continue to paint and make work that’s exciting for collectors to collect.

Another interest of mine would be to get more involved with making Artist Designer toys. It’s difficult to truly know what direction my work will take, but I definitely see myself continuing to explore until I expire.

Collector Conversations Writer Alicia Eler tours the home of Chicago collectors Matti Bunzl and Billy Vaughn, who reveal their different approaches to acquiring art as well as the ah-ha! collecting moment that started it all. aspects of our contemporary world called Strange Days. Below the work, it said “Courtesy of Rhona Hoffman Gallery.” And we had no idea what that meant. So we just went to Rhona Hoffman’s and bought the piece.

That’s how it started.

• Billy: In this piece, she uses a lot of Japanese symbols that she repeats in her works: the lotus flower, cherry blossom, the clouds. So you have these ancient Japanese art undertones overlaid with a sense of the uncanny.

• Matti: You see one and you instantly recognize it as an Ohsawa.

“If you want to distill our collection, this is it: highly academic, text-based, queer, racial politics, historicity,” says Matti Bunzl. Matti, his partner Billy Vaughn, and I gaze at three of Glenn Ligon’s Narratives, (1993), in which the queer, African-American artist re-imagines his own life as a 19th century slave narrative.

Bunzl, a fast-talking, Austrian-born professor who works in the Department of Anthropology at University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and Vaughn, a soft-spoken, Savannah, Georgia, native who teaches social studies at the University of Illinois Laboratory High School, began collecting in 2004. Their rich collection is made up of mostly photography and painting and, according to Matti, is “definitely well below 50% Chicago artists, but there is more Chicago in here than any individual city.” The couple splits their time between Chicago, where approximately one-third of their collection lives, and Champaign, where they teach and own a home that houses the other two-thirds of their collection. The two of them were gracious enough to take time out of their busy schedules and give me an in-depth tour of their intelligently curated Boystown condo.

Tell me about the beginnings. How did you two meet? When did you start collecting?

• Matti: We met in 1993 while we were in graduate school at the University of Chicago, and started collecting together in 2004. We moved to Champaign because I got a position there at the university, and Billy came too and began teaching at University High School. In 2001, we bought a house in Champaign. It took us some time to remodel and buy furniture; after we did that, the next question was what would be on the walls? We decided that we’d outgrown the posters phase, and we had always been into visual art—but not in a serious way.

• Billy: We started thinking about collecting art when we were at the MCA. • Matti: Yes. We went to the MCA once in awhile and, back in 2004, saw this piece by Stephanie Brooks, a Chicago-based artist. It was in a big group show examining unsettling

Speaking of Chicago, is this a Laura Letinsky photograph?

• Matti: I really love this piece. We decided we wanted a piece from Mourning and Melancholia, a series where Laura plays with the still life and post-dinner party kind of situation. We looked at the entire series, and we had to decide on what piece to buy. There are seven in the series, and this was Billy’s and my second choice. We had different first choices, so we agreed to agree on the mutual second choice, which doesn’t happen often.

I’m particularly drawn to this sort of cartoonish, yet unsettling work. Are the kids with bunny ears, the gorilla girl, and the burlesque dancer, preparing for a freakish, eroticized after-school variety show?

• Matti: This is a gouache-on-paper painting called After School Practice, 2006, by a young New York-based Japanese-American artist, Asuka Ohsawa. It’s just weird—we like weird, eerie art. Or maybe it’s uncanny. We bought this at the Aqua Art Fair in Miami, which is unusual because we don’t buy a lot of art at fairs. Billy found it—he is much more open to impulse buying. Well, that’s not the right word.

When he sees a piece that he loves, he wants to buy it. That doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s a strong, immediate impulse.

Whereas for me, it’s always about research and knowing a whole lot, and becomes about the context and the politics. So art fair purchasing is more the Billy approach. But I did not need to be persuaded to get this.

You say that you’re also quite interested in purely conceptual work, like this Scott Short piece, Untitled (Orange), 2007.

• Matti: Yes, he’s a Chicago-based painter who had a show at the Renaissance Society.

He takes a black piece of paper and runs it through a Xerox machine hundreds and hundreds of times until patterns start to appear, and then he paints those patterns.

It’s extreme photo realist painting and Abstract Expressionist at the same Scott Short, Untitled (Orange), 2007 time. I was particularly pleased to learn that he had been invited to the 2010 Whitney Biennial. I think the result is totally beautiful, and I can’t wait to see it in New York.

When did you open the gallery?

After some years in New York working as a singer & songwriter, Thomas Masters I returned to Chicago to perform with a group that was touring the Midwest. We backed up groups like the Stranglers, Iggy Pop & the B-52s.That was 1985. I never intended to stay here but I needed a job to support my creative work, & someone I knew suggested I work for her in her gallery. I knew nothing about galleries & owned one sport coat & a red leather tie. So, working for others from 1985-1992 I learned about the business & discovered that being in a gallery was a good way to continue working as an artist. Also at this time I started painting. I opened my gallery in 1993.

What are the benefits & challenges to having a gallery located in Old Town?

I have been here for 17 years, so the benefits outweigh the challenges. The most common misconception about being out of a gallery district is that it hurts your ability to sell art.

But I would argue that this location is better for my business than it would be in River North or West Loop. 250,000 cars drive past the gallery’s front window on North Ave. each month, & we are in a popular walking neighborhood. There are a lot of opportunities to introduce people to buying & collecting. Right before I opened in ‘93, I read the ARTnews 200 Top Collectors issue, & I thought, “I don’t have connections to any of them - I better figure out how to make my own group of important buyers & collectors.” So we worked with the people who came through the front door.

We educated them, respected them, & gave them the information they needed to comfortably make acquisitions. Ten years later we had an extremely loyal & excited client list.

People in the art business try to determine what level of gallery you are by where you’re located. This can slow the process of recognition by dealers, critics & even artists who don’t pay attention to those outside a certain group. Your profile suffers until, over time, you demonstrate your talents & abilities.

You have featured work by a broad range of artists, including Melinda StickneyGibson, Corey Postiglione, Tim Anderson, & Jon Langford, as well as international artists such as Dzine, Art Shay, & Magdalena Abakanowicz. Talk about coordinating a gallery program to showcase such a range of work.

I am really proud to have worked with all these people. I follow my own sense of what works here & trust my eye & my passion for art, & I base my relationships on hard work,

commitment, & success. I tell the artists that I started the gallery with almost nothing. I didn’t know a soul in this city, and I had no safety net - no wealthy spouse or backer. I did have the drive & hunger of a guy from a working class background who wants to do something meaningful. We live & die by our ability to make our artists & our gallery successful. I meet more & more established artists who like that about our gallery. These are serious artists who have withstood the test of time & dedicated their life to their creative work. I’ve learned that artists work with you when you can give their career energetic progression.

You help to establish buyers & collectors & put a tremendous amount of energy into making the whole thing work for them while demonstrating your own skill & creativity.

What is it like working so closely in the gallery with your wife Agnieszka?

Agnieszka joined me in the gallery in 2002 & brought with her a sense of organization & common sense that I do not possess, & she mastered the Mac & improved our communications. She’s a documentary filmmaker & an art historian. Recently we began incorporating her short films about our exhibiting artists on our website. We work around each other pretty effortlessly & rely on one another when we make tough choices. The gallery would not have survived & grown the way it has if she had not joined me.

Agnieszka was born in Warsaw, Poland & escaped the Agnieszka Masters communist regime to start a new life in America. She now applies that enormous strength & courage to running the gallery. Whatever we accomplish, we do it together. My name is on the door but she is the heart & soul of the gallery.

You have a strong music & painting background. How do you incorporate your own passions in the gallery?

I can’t do just one thing. I just finished a recording project called The shape of the Water, a collection of musical works intended as soundtrack for film. I collaborated with two talented young artists, Adrian Leverkuhn & Rebekah Wilson, and we should have a CD out this spring. In May I am participating in Paper, featuring 12 artists & their works on paper at the Beverly Arts Center. And I have a new performance project with a working title of 20 something. I live to create. Being an artist, a musician, writer & art dealer gives my life meaning & purpose.

Question: I am downsizing and will not have room for some of my art when I move. What are my options?

Answer: Sell, auction or donate.

Find out the value. Whatever you decide to do, you need to establish the value of the art.

If you purchased works from a gallery, that would be a good place to start. While they may or may not be interested in taking the artwork back for purchase, consignment or trade – they should be able to tell you the current fair market value of the piece(s) and advise you.

If you acquired artwork from an artist, auction or as a gift, try to gather as much information as possible about the piece, including its provenance (history); documentation and/or photographs of it, as well as the artist’s resume. Then consult an expert: a dealer who represents the artist or period; an auction house, or a licensed appraiser. Note: for a written appraisal from any expert, expect to pay a fee.

• Sell Once you know the value, consider selling it to a friend, online, or to a dealer. However, unless a dealer regularly works with the artist, medium or period, he/she probably will not be interested. Of course this varies according to the price of the artwork as well as the reputation of the artist.

• Auction Auction houses can expand your options.

They can tell you when they will be offering works similar to yours. They can give you an estimate of the value of the artwork, and what you can expect to receive. Ask about auction house commissions as well as reserves you can place on the work so that it won’t sell under an agreed upon amount. • Donate There are several advantages to donating art.

You can find an immediate home for it; know that a piece you care about is being enjoyed by an appreciative audience, and receive a tax deduction* *Be sure to consult a tax expert to determine if there are restrictions or requirements in connection with your donation. Also be aware that museums will not always accept donations of art. Consider hospitals, schools or other qualified not for profits who will display the work.

Neighborhoods include Pilsen, Hyde Park, Chinatown & Bronzeville. The largest concentration of galleries in the area is in Pilsen East’s Chicago Arts District, near Halsted & 18th Sts. july-september: Summer Studio: In summer 2010 SAIC’s Sullivan Galleries will be transformed into living studios–bringing together the space of production (the studio) and the space of exhibition (galleries). From Chicago and beyond, participating artists working in a wide range of media will open up their creative processes for public view.

Summer studio will also host probing discussions for practitioners and public alike on Chicago as a site of production and the contribution of artists to the local community. This exhibition is particularly supported by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and is part of Studio Chicago, a yearlong collaborative project that focuses on the artist’s studio.
